HI KEY CLUB! A new term has just begun, but the school year is almost ending, but that doesn’t mean that volunteering opportunities are over for the year. There’s still opportunities over the summer, and I’m looking forward to seeing Key Club at work over the summer (if you have time)! A big thanks to not only our cabinet members, but every member for making service events so enjoyable. In this month’s newsletter, a few events will be recapped, along with some advice from some of our very own cabinet members. I hope you’ll have fun looking over this newsletter! And a reminder to take breaks: the school year is almost ending, but finals are coming up, so it’s important to relax and not get overwhelmed. Don’t let the stress get to you! Be sure to drink water and get plenty of sleep! Thanks for reading the newsletter, and try dropping by next month :)

Jasmine Tai | President

HELLO WHITNEY KEY CLUB! Welcome to the first newsletter of the 2023-2024 term. If you do not know me yet, my name is Jasmine Tai and I am more than honored to be serving as your president for this term. I am super excited to bring my ideas for the club this year and be able to meet more of you all this year. With the end of the school year here, it may seem like summer may lack in service activities. However, with Key Club, there are always new opportunities arising in different ways. With the many different aspects of Key Club like in-person service events, interclub socials, and fundraisers, the end of the school year just means more opportunities to participate in such things. So continue staying updated on our socials and looking for these events. No matter if you are an officer or a member, I hope you all stay involved in Key Club. As a member for 3 whole years, I can truly say that I have found a community in this club and this year, I hope to bring that same idea of community to all of you as well. Although it is really easy to be a part of this club, the biggest step to truly becoming involved is taking initiative and taking advantage of the temporary moments that happen in Key Club. With that being said, thank you for clicking on this newsletter and being willing to read our talented Bulletin Editor, Adelene Chen’s, newsletter. Please continue to support this newsletter throughout the year by giving it a simple read through, especially since all our board members spend time making these articles as well. Hope to see you all at our summer events this year and please do not be afraid to reach out if you have any questions!

Hey Key Clubbers! Welcome to the 2023-2024 term! I’m Steven Cao, your Vice President, and I would like to welcome all our new and returning members! With a new term comes new goals and opportunities, and I know we can reach new service records! For those of you who may be new to the club, I have a few insights into getting involved in our work and finding that passion that drives every Key Clubber! First, we offer both online and in-person service events that are sent out every month by our wonderful Directors of Activities! While in-person activities can be a great substitute when you are busy, as I’m sure you have been during APs, do your best to attend in-person service activities and bring your friends. Serving on-site with your own hands is how you experience just how rewarding it is to support your community. Whether it be food banks or charity runs, you’ll be working alongside your peers and seeing the smiles of the people you help firsthand! You’ll also leave the day with not just the fulfillment of helping others but often incredible memories. I can recall so many moments from my own in-person service, from driving around golf carts at a Charity Golf Tournament to watching dogs surf! Key Club offers so many opportunities for service month; it’s just up to you to choose one and see where it can take you, transforming an average Saturday afternoon into a memory you’ll remember even when you graduate. So be bold. Take the initiative. Making a difference has to start somewhere, after all. I look forward to seeing all of you at our future service events and hope that you will find the same joy that I do. And if you have any suggestions for service activities that you know of, our cabinet is always open to new ideas!

Step 1: Be present. This seems like a silly step, but it’s so very important. Come to general meetings, attend DCMs, show your support and prioritize Key Club in your schedule. It will really pay off in the end.

Step 2: Always embody the 4 core values of Key Club. The four core values of Key Club are to be character-building, inclusive, caring, and a leader. Always create a welcoming space for everyone no matter where you go, and continue to inspire others along your Key Club journey!

Step 3: Get involved! Seek leadership opportunities and ask the cabinet on ways that YOU can get involved even while being a member. Show your passion by being Chair once in a while, serving frequently, and having good attendance in general.

Step 4: Have fun! If it ever feels forced, something’s wrong. Remember to enjoy the moment and make community service fun! You can do this by inviting friends and just having a positive, optimistic mindset.

Step 5: PAY YOUR DUES! Another tip that seems obvious, but some people don’t do. By paying your dues, you will be able to qualify for scholarships, attend unBEElievable conventions, run for positions and SO MUCH MORE! Without payment of dues, our club and other Key Clubs would not be able to function and provide our services. Please, if you have any questions or are in a difficult situation, contact our Treasurer, Hasini!

If you have found yourself struggling participating, finding time to go to events, or don’t even know what events are available to sign up for, then I have some advice for you. For you members who are attempting to stay active or just need advice on how to stay updated, I would say that the first step is to check your email. Every month we send an email with all of the upcoming service events for that month and to sign up all you have to do is write your name down on the attached spreadsheet. One key thing for me as I began being active in Key Club, is I would set the dates in which I plan to volunteer in my calendar so if I was making plans with friends I would see that I had a volunteering event that day already. Another key thing I would say is that if you find yourself really busy that month and can’t find time to go to any of the events, then volunteering online is another great option. When sending the email with physical events, another is also sent out with the online events that month. This makes it so even if you don’t have the time to physically attend an event you can still gain service hours simply by spending a little time doing some fun online activities. Other than email, you can also stay updated with our Key Club instagram page which shows our upcoming events and general meetings, which is also another thing that is worth attending. In these general meetings they not only catch you up on the prior month and events, but they also give you a layout of the upcoming events for that month. Moreover, it is also an opportunity to ask any questions or concerns you may have with the Key Club cabinet members. My last key note for those of you who want to really aspire to involve yourselves in Key Club is to pay attention to our division as a whole. Attending DCM’s and checking out the Division 30 South instagram page helps you involve yourself with the bigger community of Key Club. In the Division events, you are now enabling yourself to meet other members of this international organization and are now more engaged in Key Club’s true visionary commitment. As you can see, there are many ways, some that I haven’t even mentioned, to become involved, stay updated, and active in Key Club even if you haven’t started. Though it may seem overwhelming at first and feel as though you are already behind, there is always something that you can do to stay active. Whether it's attending events in person, online, or even just attending general meetings or commenting on new instagram posts, the Key Club community is welcome to all.

Since May is Mental Health Awareness Month, I’ll be talking about how to manage stress. As we all know, managing school and extracurricular activities like Key Club can be a tricky thing to do. But if managed correctly, the stress of the school year won’t be as bad! For starters, making sure that you have time to unwind is a crucial part of destressing. It’s even recommended by the CDC. Make some time for activities that you enjoy doing, even if it’s only for a little bit. I find that it really helps the tunnel vision I get when studying or doing something near the deadline. Even something as simple as taking a quick walk around your house could be an easy way to destress! Personally, I find that talking to people is a great way to handle stress. Talking to someone gives me the opportunity to vent; I didn’t realize just how much anxiety I had in my head until I let it all out to someone. Talking to someone can really help keep your head clear and sort out whatever you’re feeling at that moment. I think that this strategy also has the benefit of being able to talk to whoever you want. It could be a relative, a close friend, or even a trusted adult. I find that talking on the phone with a friend for a bit helps me keep me calm and makes me happy! If you’re stressed, then I really suggest this method. Being involved in Key Club’s extracurricular activities may also seem rather stressful; you’re always trying to balance your schedule. But if you learn how to see the fun in everything, it makes life a whole lot easier. Instead of worrying about how a certain volunteer event would go, try to think about all the fun things you’ll be doing or all the awesome people you’ll meet! Lastly, don’t be afraid to reach out for help. If you’re really struggling with stress, ask a trusted adult for help. I’m sure that they’ll be more than willing to help. Whatever you’re going through right now, just know that Key Club Bee-lieves in you!

Sophie Ly | Historian/Tech Editor Hey sunnies! 🤩I’m Sophie Ly, one of your historians/tech editors/DOPs (director of publicity) for the 2023 - 2024 Key Club term! I am the principal digital graphic designer, and the other two working this position with me are Lourdes (Noelle) Vigilia (main traditional graphic designer) and Tina Namiranian (main director of publicity). Between the three of us, we have very many club duties. To start off, regarding our historian-related responsibilities, we have to take as many quality pictures and videos with our phones or our cameras (for more important events) at nearly every single Key Club service event, meeting, or fundraiser. Regarding our tech editor work, we have to create aesthetically pleasing, eye-catching, informational graphics (both digital and physical, though physical posters are only needed occasionally) to promote as many events as needed, along with creating Instagram posts for these graphics every time. The process of creating these graphics can be quite tedious, especially for digital ones, as we have to find backgrounds and images relating to specific color schemes, the event, and Key Club; acquire and select the most crucial information for the event that is to be put on the graphic; and make constant edits and adjustments to the graphic as needed to ensure it is appealing to Key Clubbers/potential volunteers or attenders of the event, to summarize. Finally, regarding our director of finance duties, we have to consistently be active on Key Club’s socials (primarily Instagram) for posting on the Key Club account and story for publicity or answering any questions we may get there. Looking into our Instagram posts, it is our job to check and make sure that every Whitney Key Club cabinet and DLT cabinet member is reposting every new graphic or video we post, occasionally on a certain day of a publicity schedule if we use one. This is a key part of our publicizing methods that we use, along with promoting Key Club events in real life to classmates and friends and other on other socials. Now, that’s a wrap on my explanation of what my partners and I do in our Key Club position. Thanks, sunnies, for reading and keep shining everyday! ☀🐝

WHAT ARE KEY CLUB’S FOUR CORE VALUES AND HOW CAN YOU UPHOLD THEM?

Akshar Belaguly | Director of Fundraising

The rules and core values of Key Club have formed the backbone of its purpose and have stressed the importance of community service. Let’s learn what each core value stands for and how you can uphold them.

Leadership: All kinds of leadership bind together a group of people working towards a common cause: to provide assistance and volunteer to help improve the world. Good leadership can be shown by anyone, even when one doesn’t hold a leadership position; taking initiative in meetings and tasks is always a great first step!

Character Building: It cannot be understated that Key Club can transform people into kind, unique individuals, confident of their ability to create positive change in the world. There are many ways individuals can uphold this, including increasing their network and social circle by interacting with many Key Clubbers at division events and participating in service events.

Caring: If Key Club had all the other core values but missed out on this one, it would no longer be a community service club. True Key Clubbers know the importance of being intrinsically motivated to help their communities; this can be upheld by participating in service events and recognizing the importance of the work Key Club does every day.

Inclusiveness: The sentiment of unconditional assistance to others is more universal than one might think; this is why it is so important to include members of any race, sex, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc into Key Club. Allow everyone to offer inputs in group and division meetings and the results and ideas created from them can be surprising.

Ultimately, according to the Key Club national anthem, being a member of Key Club is about serving your “nation and world,” as well as to “combat all forces which tend to undermine these institutions.” Guided by these core values, a better, more inclusive and caring world is truly possible.

Focus is the secret to overcoming procrastination. We frequently overcommit ourselves and end up feeling stressed. Start by picking just ONE thing you've been putting off and resolve to finish it within the coming week. Once you have narrowed down your tasks try completing them with a method called the “Five Minute Miracle”. Asking yourself, "Hmm, what action can I take in less than five minutes TODAY that helps me complete this task even the slightest bit?" is a key component of The Five Minute Miracle. Once you've decided on a quick task, set a timer for five minutes and devote that time to finishing it. According to research, you're considerably more likely to finish something once you've started it. If that doesn’t work, try to put away anything that can distract you like your phone. Then create a calm working environment for yourself, you can play music too, if that helps you work faster. Then you can begin working in chunks. Usually people tend to work in chunks of twenty minutes and take a short break in between. Using these tips can help you complete work faster and leave more time for yourself, your friends, and your family.

Ann Huang | Secretary On April 29, 2023, we celebrated the end of the 2022-2023 term and welcomed the start of the 2023-2024 term with our entire Division 30 South. We all gathered together at the Kiwanis Youth Park in Fullerton for our division banquet. We first started the banquet with our April DCM, where a representative from each club gave an update about their club’s recent accomplishments and activities. Our LTG, Austin, also provided some division updates. Next, we moved on to get our food: In-n-Out burgers, chips, and drinks! After we finished eating, we roamed around the park, which resembled a small building complex with a grassy area and basketball court. We took some pictures and enjoyed the beautiful weather and scenery. Later on, we started our division recognition. Whitney Key Club received Second Shining Club of the Year, Most Hours Raised with over 6000 hours, and Most Funds Raised with over $1100! Our IP President, Jerrick, and our current President, Jasmine, accepted the awards. Finally, we had our Open Mic where anyone could come up and make a speech about anything Key Club related. We then took our club picture in front of the banquet poster and hung out with everyone else for the rest of the banquet. We had around 17 officers and members from Whitney alone and our chaperone, Mr. Bender, attend the division banquet! With the end of this past term, we will miss our seniors, and we wish them all the best of luck on their next journeys in life! With the start of this new term, let’s aim for even greater heights! Let’s raise even more hours and funds and get FIRST Shining Club of the Year! Let’s make this term even better than the last!

Flavors of Cerritos was a service event that took place on May 19th, 2023 at Cerritos Elementary. The event started at 5pm and lasted until 8-8:30, with different cultural food being served, and different performances taking place consecutively throughout the entire event. Members of Key Club were serving at the game booths, where we arrived right after school, around 4, and spent time setting up games, and making posters for these activities. Once the event actually began, we spent our time interacting with many different children who wanted to play games and win prizes. The event itself was truly amazing; we were given opportunities to take breaks and go look around and buy cultural food (which were AMAZING) and we were able to watch the different cultural performances that occurred. We worked together to try to get the most amount of tickets as possible, as this meant the event was raising even more money.

Personally, I myself really enjoyed the event, as I was able to interact with many people, and help the kids to enjoy the event a little bit more. I loved working with my fellow members that also came to volunteer, as it was fun coming up with little names for the games and making our own rules to help the kids have even more fun! The kids were all super fun to play with, and it was fun seeing them come back to your booth, as you can see that they enjoyed your games, and it helped to become more comfortable within the event, and enjoy the volunteering. Flavors of Cerritos was one of my favorite events to participate in, as I love working with kids, and my fellow peers helped make it easier to run my booth. The event itself was also quite the festival, as there were so many food trucks to try food fun, and the variety of entertainment that was there was endless. I truly loved this event, and I hope I will be able to participate in this festival again next year!

Kaitlyn Tran | Director of Activities

SDCCU OC Marathon was an event where volunteers handed out shirts, medals, bibs, and food, ran water stations, conducted crowd control, or attended game stations. It was run by the Autism Community in Action, or TACA, which is a national non-profit organization dedicated to educating, empowering, and supporting families affected by autism. This marathon brought together runners and spectators with numbers in the thousands to this annual running festival. The SDCCU OC Marathon will help aid families on their autism journey and give hope to families living with autism. This event was very busy, always working and active. Volunteers were on their feet the entire time. They received a neon yellow shirt so people could quickly identify them as volunteers willing to help! Volunteers working at the bib station had to search for the numbers the runners had in organized bins, numerically sorted. Before giving it to them, volunteers had to make sure it was the correct person (identity theft is not a joke 󰢄) by checking their identification. If it was the proper runner, they hand the bib to them and four safety pins! This job helped volunteers work on their social skills as well as aiding others to prepare for the marathon the next day, making the runners’ lives easier. Volunteers were also working with other volunteers from different schools and places, able to make new friends. They were also with their own fellow Key Club members, forming indescribable bonds between them. The other stands were similar to the bib station like the shirt stand. After runners were done picking up their stuff on day one, volunteers were required to clean up the stands and break down for the next day. This consisted of folding the tables and chairs, taking down banners and labeling them and rolling them up, and folding up tablecloths. This event was overall very engaging and earned volunteers five volunteer hours for both shifts. While it was a bit tiring, it was brightening to interact with the runners and other volunteers. Many friendships were made on these two days, and it was a success!

Anshika Govada | Director of Kiwanis and Outreach

What’s up Whitney Key Club! My name is Anshika Govada and I am so excited to once again serve you all. Last term I served as one of your DOFs and this term I will be serving as the Director of Kiwanis & Outreach! When you think of summer, you probably think about all the ways to want to relax. However, summer is an amazing opportunity to be active. During these two months, there are multiple opportunities to volunteer and serve through Key Club. Every month, our DOAs plan many events for our members to serve their community even during the break, both in-person and online. All of these activities give you the opportunity to serve your community as a whole. These events give you the flexibility to sign up according to your schedule, especially online events. These activities are just as fun while also having the great flexibility and ability to be done at your own pace. During in-person events, you have the ability to meet new people and make friendships that could last a lifetime. Bonding with others and its social aspects are the one of the most important qualities of Key Club. Therefore BEE sure to keep an eye out for the emails that the DOAs send every month with these activities. In addition to our school’s club activities, our division club, D30s has many activities and events planned out for its members to participate in. This ranges from various service activities to fun bonding events with all of the members and leaders. On top of these events, every month D30s holds Division Council Meetings(DCM). In these meetings, members receive division updates, awards, and even get to bond with members from our various other schools. Every DCM is unique and carefully planned to make sure all of the members have a great time. Also at most DCMs, multiple school level Key Clubs hold fundraisers to raise money, so make sure to take some cash to support them! Considering all of the amazing opportunities that Key Club provides during summer, so BEE sure to participate all summer long. You could accomplish so much this summer and we hope to see you there. Lastly, I truly wish you the best summer and good luck on comps! Happy Key-Clubbing!
