2014 Adelaide Cabaret Festival

Page 1

Welcome Kate Ceberano Well here we are! At the end of my three year tenure as Artistic Director and may I first say “THANK YOU”! Thank you to all our many artists that we have featured over these last few years. Thank you for your talent, your grace, and courage. Watching you I feel I have evolved as an artist myself. Thank you to Adelaide audiences for being so willing to be involved. Your love of this festival is what keeps us up at night. Finding new ways to entertain you, listening to you and hearing your feedback continues to keep this festival yours! So small in its beginning, now one of the most renowned in the world. That’s no shabby effort and you did it. As a winter festival the Adelaide Festival Centre wraps its arms around its patrons against the cold and throbs with the collective force of talent and good humor. Not only the artists, but the production and administration staff all work together to create this warm and inviting hearth of music and art. I have loved every minute of my time here in Adelaide as you will love every minute of this year’s program. See many shows, hear all the stories, enjoy the uniqueness of this “treasure of a festival”.

Artistic Director, Adelaide Cabaret Festival

Douglas Gautier I am pleased to welcome you to the Adelaide Festival Centre’s 14th Adelaide Cabaret Festival program. From 6 June, across 16 days and nights I invite you to come and enjoy over 470 artists in over 170 performances! Kate Ceberano has again brought together another remarkable mix of artists to entertain you. There is truly something for everyone this year, from the very young to the young at heart, from traditional cabaret to innovative contemporary work and everything in between. We welcome Anthony Warlow, ‘Australia’s first man of music theatre’, back to Adelaide for the first time in almost a decade accompanied by his co-star from the Broadway production of Annie, Faith Prince. US star Kathy Najimy will be presenting the world premiere of her show Lift Up Your Skirt before taking it to New York. Previous Adelaide Cabaret Festival Artistic Director David Campbell will be presenting an intimate collection of songs with John Bucchino; and young people will be entertained with Still Awake Still and Ali McGregor’s Jazzamatazz! We continue our successful Adelaide Cabaret Festival Roadshow, this year travelling to Mt Gambier as well as Port Pirie to ensure our regional audiences don’t miss out on the fun. 2014 marks Kate’s final year as Artistic Director. She has done an outstanding job. She has brought us a unique vision and passionate leadership, as well as being an active champion for the Adelaide Cabaret Festival – performing, attending and promoting the festival on the world stage. We sincerely thank her for being a part of it. In 2015 we hand over the artistic reins to an Australian legend – Mr Barry Humphries. Lastly, I need to thank our loyal cabaret audiences who continue to fill our venues year after year; Frank Ford who has been integral to the Festival from its inception, our sponsors who enable us to put on this high quality event; and the staff and volunteers that make it all possible.

CEO and Artistic Director, Adelaide Festival Centre

Adelaide Festival Centre acknowledges that Indigenous Australians are the first people of this land. We pay our respect to all Indigenous people, past and present, and recognise their continuing spiritual, physical and cultural connection to the land.

Frank Ford AM Nothing is more fun and invigorating than the cabaret experience. Cabaret uses all forms of popular entertainment as a vehicle for artists to express their opinions and attitudes about life. It is live theatre at its best. The cabaret artist seeks a personal engagement with the audience, encouraging us to reflect on the wonders of the world and the antics of human behaviour. The Adelaide Cabaret Festival attracts truly outstanding artists from around the nation and the globe. Come and join them in the joyous celebrations of the best and biggest cabaret festival in the world. I thank my Fellow Festival Advocacy Committee members Amanda Blair, Jane Doyle, Zannie Flanagan, Matt Gilbertson, Martin Haese, Denise Jones, Paul Kitching, Damien Kitto and Amanda Pepe.

Beginning his career in Adelaide, the now Melbourne based artist is one of the most successful and innovative painters currently working in Australia. In his art Bromley has managed to combine a distinctive Pop sensibility – a love of found images, photographic sources and mass media references – with an inventive relish for the effects of paint. His work divides into two distinct but related strands: images of childhood (adapted from the world of 1950s book illustrations) and images of the female nude. Bromley is also increasingly in demand as a portraitist. He has been a finalist six times in the Archibald Prize and the painter of some famous visages, including filmmaker Scott Hicks, actors Hugo Weaving and Jack Thompson, Kylie Minogue, Lily Allen and more recently Miranda Kerr. Displaying an extraordinary artistic energy he has experimented with a wide variety of different media – printmaking, ceramic, sculpture and, more recently, film furniture, fashion and interiors. As Adelaide Cabaret Festival Designer Bromley is responsible for the look and feel of this year’s Festival and you’ll see his influence in everything from the brochure to the foyers, gallery spaces and venue theming. In this exhibition, especially curated for the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, you will see original artwork by David Bromley, as well as work from Datsun Tran and Stewart MacFarlane and a surprise guest or two.

MEMOIRS OF A SHOWGIRL

NOVA NOIR

Stories from behind the sequin curtain

Captivating cabaret served in several languages

Join Australia’s favourite showgirl, former Moulin Rouge and Lido dancer, Shay Stafford as she pulls back the curtain on Paris cabaret and reminisces in song and dance about her twelve years performing on two of the world’s most famous stages.

Award-winning Australian cabaret performer and Adelaide Cabaret Festival darling, Kim Smith, charts a dark and whimsical path through a neo-Weimar popfantasia of genre-bending pop and peculiar period treasures with Nova Noir. Mining his debut album, Nova, Smith gives his own electro-pop originals a decadent 1920s treatment, while reimagining works by Weimar-era composers, and modern-day artists including Friedrich Hollaender, Cher, Kurt Weill, The Supremes, Kylie Minogue, Hanns Eisler, plus a myriad of glittering others.

Along with her troupe of leggy dancers, The Can-Canettes, live musicians and the vocal stylings of French balladeer, Monsieur P – the girl from Brizzy presents a feather-festooned celebration of all things Parisian.

“Caroline Nin is an icon… Nin pushes both established cabaret standards to cinematic perfection… star quality drips from every languide fingertip!”

French chanteuse Caroline Nin has been regularly seducing Adelaide Cabaret Festival audiences since 2002. This year she returns with stories from backstage at the most famous cabaret in the world... the Paris Lido. Famed for its sophisticated nightlife the iconic venue on the ChampsElysees has been home to cabaret’s elite including Marlene Dietrich, Edith Piaf, Shirley Maclaine, Liza Minnelli and Noel Coward to name just a few. For five years from 2005 Nin was headlining at the Lido in the glamorous revue, Bonheur. She introduced her audiences to the longings, struggles and heartaches of her character Lola Lola with Nin as both mistress and muse.

The Stage, London

Caroline and her quartet, led by Musical Director John Thorn, will transport you to the heart of Paris with an exciting repertoire that celebrates the cosmopolitan and multicultural nature of the city. Featuring songs from Brel, Legrand, Gainsbourg, Piazzolla, Grace Jones and Kurt Weill let Nin’s trademark smoky jazz-inflected voice seduce you over and over.

The Baker Suite

Blake Bowden & Phil Scott

SECOND NATURE:

MARIO

A COLLABORATION OF POETRY & MUSIC

Relive the era of memorable music and murderous mafiosi

Offering songs that explore life, love and nature – The Baker Suite have been described as Art-folk, French Cafe, seductive-country and gypsy-romantica.

In the 1950s Mario Lanza was a tenor superstar in Hollywood, his records topped the charts and everyone fell for his charm and beautiful voice.

The Baker Suite is a refreshingly Australian music experience, with their acoustic-folk-pop built around the warm combination of John Baker’s acoustic guitar and storytelling and Gayle Buckby’s parisian-esque piano accordion. They’re joined by Julian Ferraretto on violin, Lyndon Gray on double bass and Enrico Mick Morena on drums. With a new album just released and a recent appearance at WOMADelaide, they are winning hearts across Australia and Europe including number one fan and collaborator Kate Ceberano.

Ten years later, he was all washed up, dying mysteriously at the age of 38. What happened?

“Minor masterpieces that blend folk, country, blues and jazz speckled with global allusions sit beside quirky pop songs…” Weekend Australian

Blake Bowden (South Pacific) sings up a storm as the stormy Lanza, while writer/satirist/pianist and Adelaide Cabaret Festival regular Phil Scott fills in the gaps, playing various characters in the singer’s life.

WAITING FOR MY REAL LIFE...

FREEDMAN DOES NILSSON

“…he’s a seamless representation of the greats of our time…” The Huffington Post

Grammy® Award-winner Harry Nilsson has been hailed as a genius and recognised by his peers as one of the greatest singer-songwriters of the twentieth century. His songs have been recorded and performed by numerous singers including Ella Fitzgerald and Neil Diamond. However, despite being a gifted studio artist, Nilsson suffered from horrific stage fright which meant he never performed his songs in concert. One of Australia’s most accomplished contemporary songwriters, Tim Freedman invites you to a “live imagining” of what a Harry Nilsson concert could have been.

For the uninitiated, Colin Hay’s live performances are an astonishing, powerful journey, sometimes straight down the main road, sometimes following the twists and turns of the road less travelled. Whether he is telling of his globe-dominating romp with Australian rock band Men at Work, running concurrently with a runaway love affair with alcohol, Colin strips bare an amazing story, through the vagaries of the music industry, to the mess and glory of life in general, with exquisite comic timing and a heartfelt, wry sense of humour.

Kila Kokonut Krew’s

The Factory

By Vela Manusate

Magnificent voices soar in a musical journey Hilarious and heartfelt, this vibrant funk-fuelled musical weaves a romantic narrative and clever lyrics into a tribute to the courage of the Pacific peoples who came to Auckland during the 1970s.

Opening with a powerful call to ancestral roots The Factory follows the story of Losa arriving in Aukilani with her father. A young Samoan woman with big dreams and hopes for a brighter future, she is set to work in a South Auckland textile factory, but each time the factory bell rings, she feels further away from her home and her aspirations. Created by the Kila Kokonut Krew, this full-scale uplifting musical features an original score, slick choreography, and a dazzling array of exuberant and soulful songs from disco to soul and Pacific roots accompanied by a dynamic live band.

Director: Anapela Polataivao Composer: Poulima Salima

“ This Pacific Les Mis tale of race and class is hugely levered by romance, humour and funky 70s style.” New Zealand Herald

ANNIE’S ROOM

RITUALS OF ART & HATRED

A swingin’ homage to the queen of vocalese

The Crown Prince of Melbourne cabaret

It’s 1965 in London and the British rock scene is in full swing – the Beatles are invading America and the Stones can’t get no satisfaction. But for jazz singer Annie Ross, who once jammed with Miles Davis, shoplifted with Ella Fitzgerald and drank all night with Chet Baker – the only thing swingin’ about the 60s is her Room! Australian jazz singer Kate Fuller takes us back to the closing night of Annie’s famed VIP cabaret club in Covent Garden and pays homage to this extraordinary star of the American and British jazz scene.

One of Australia’s most biting lyricists celebrates his fourth Adelaide Cabaret Festival visit with this musical rite of desecration. If you witnessed Vaudeville X, Intimate Apparel or Urban Display Suite you’ll expect nothing less than a witty revue with bite. Dalley showcases a line-up of exquisitely subversive songs, celebrating the divine beauty of mockery. Rituals of Art and Hatred will take you on a pilgrimage from the profane to the ridiculous. Come and be blessed!

“Michael Dalley is extraordinarily talented and mildly smutty!” The Age

Picture Perfect

E CABARStill Awake Still!

Music and lyrics by Scott Evan Davis

Mischievous cabaret for kids

Starring DAVID HARRIS

Miss Ivory Tinklefinger, Queen of Sleep, is hired to sing the audience to sleep, but tonight her piano has a mind of its own. Her lullabies come alive – and the consequences are wild. Based on much-loved songs from the bedtime book I’m Still Awake Still! by Elizabeth Honey and Sue Johnson, this stunning reimagining for the stage is strikingly original, strangely beautiful, ridiculously funny and filled with mayhem worthy of the Marx Brothers.

“Effervescent and utterly entertaining for the whole family”

with Johanna Allen, Amity Dry, Naomi Eyers & Paul Talbot

A musical insight into the envied picture perfect New York composer Scott Evan Davis’ Picture Perfect is a song cycle about the reality that lies behind the ‘picture perfect’ façade we present to the rest of the world. It’s about the seconds either side of the perfectly composed family portrait, or the truth buried beneath each ‘my life is perfect’ Facebook update or tweet. The moments presented in the work explore recognisable truths from the day-to-day lives of men, women and children. Picture Perfect stars leading Australian performer David Harris (Wicked, Legally Blonde, Miss Saigon) along with some of Adelaide’s best known performers.

KING OF FLACK

NEW COAT OF PAINT:

The captivating music of Carole King and Roberta Flack

THE SONGS OF TOM WAITS

Home-grown sensation Kim Spargo and the Collected Musicians bring you a delicious new show celebrating two of the world’s most celebrated female singer/ songwriters – Carole King and Roberta Flack.

Caught between vagabond and chanteuse, local lovely Alison Coppe and her band take you on an intoxicating journey through the songs of blues legend Tom Waits. Traversing the great lengths of Waits’ catalogue from Closing Time to Bone Machine and beyond with balls-out blues, down and out dames, razor sharp grooves and delicate ballads.

Weaving through King and Flack’s individual tapestries of struggle, success, politics, men and children, this is an honest and well-crafted insight into these two inspiring women. King of Flack will unlock the vault to their many number one hits and classics such as Natural Woman, Killing me Softly and You’ve got a Friend.

PATTI ISSUES

3 GEN VARIETY SHOW

A funny, tender rainbow reminiscence

Three generations of award winning song & dance men

The long running off-Broadway hit solo play Patti Issues makes its Australian premiere at this year’s Adelaide Cabaret Festival.

Join three generations of the Kermond clan, national treasure Warren, his multi-award winning son Wayne and grandson Zan, in a show-stopping tribute to all things vaudeville.

As a young gay boy Ben Rimalower found comfort in musical theatre especially in the transportive voice of Broadway star Patti LuPone. With a mix of comic irreverence, stark candor and show-biz bravado, Patti Issues poignantly explores the challenges facing LGBT parents and children while shining unique light on gay men’s time-old obsessions with divas.

Written & performed by: Ben Rimalower

This multi-generational romp delivers a fresh new insight into the hitherto vanishing world of variety where, night after night, song, dance, slapstick and comedy collide to create entertainment that will delight, titillate and amuse audiences from Geraldton to Gundagi. Be part of Australian theatre history as the Kermonds invite you to share their passion for their own singular brand of entertainment – because, as far they’re concerned there’s no business like show business…

THEY SAY SHE’S DIFFERENT

EVERYBODY LOVES LUCY

Edgy, gritty, loud and dirty

All hail the original queen of American comedy

Powered by the music of 70s funk rock fusion queen Betty Davis, They Say She’s Different is a sonic, visual feast for the senses.

Lucille Ball reigned supreme as television’s biggest star in I Love Lucy – the most popular sitcom in American history. From being questioned by Congress on her alleged Communist sympathies to becoming the first female head of a major movie studio – Ball’s life was complicated.

Once married to Miles Davis and introducing him to her good friend Jimi Hendrix, Betty was pivotal in shaping a new generation of music and driving the soul train of change through her own explosive sounds.

Acclaimed Australian musical theatre star Elise McCann (Mamma Mia, My Fair Lady, South Pacific) presents a madcap, hilarious tribute to a true trail-blazer featuring much-loved songs from Lucille Ball’s roles in Mame, Top Hat and many more.

Johanna Allen

THE SONGS THAT GOT AWAY:

RUNNIN’ WILD:

THE MUSIC OF HAROLD ARLEN

SONGS & SCANDALS OF THE ROARING 20 S

From Stormy Weather to Somewhere Over the Rainbow Between 1930 and 1970 Harold Arlen contributed over 500 songs to popular music, sung by the most famous women of the time including Lena Horne, Peggy Lee, Ethel Waters and the incomparable Judy Garland – all with their own stories of tragedy and survival. A vocal powerhouse of jazz, blues, musical theatre and opera, acclaimed cabaret performer Johanna Allen explores the music Arlen wrote and the women who sang his songs.

“ This girl can sing. Plus she has timing, presence and a whole lot of chutzpah.”

Back by popular demand Adelaide Cabaret Festival’s adopted son returns to guide you through the wildest decade of the 20th century. Every song is about booze, drugs or sex and the stories bring back to life underground drag queens, and barrelhouse blues belters, smoldering torch singers and one of the great murder trials of the time. As an added bonus, you’ll learn how to make a perfect Gin Martini.
