Tina Marsh (in memoriam) On June 17th the Austin arts community lost one of it’s shining stars. Tina Marsh was one of a kind, both in voice and spirit. Her impact as a jazz singer, composer, and leader of the Creative Opportunity Orchestra was unequalled. She will live in the memory of anyone who ever heard her soaring arias, her tender and vulnerable renditions of standards or her amazing improvisations. Her contributions to the community through her multidisciplinary educational program, the Circle of Light, were immeasurable. Tina was the only artist to have been inducted into both the Austin Music Hall of Fame and the Austin Arts Hall of Fame. From all of us that you touched both heart and soul, thank you. You will be missed but never forgotten Recommended: Inside the Breaking. www.creop.org

Wonders and Worries

¡Que Maravilla! (What a Wonder!) The Chair: Cynthia Hoff Diagnosed with Hepatitis C several years ago, Cynthia Hoff knows first hand the ways in which a serious illness can affect the entire family. When her treatment, a daily regimen of interferon shots, left her feeling sick and lethargic, Cynthia realized that her illness impacted more than her own physical health. “My children had a lot of questions. When children are affected by a serious family illness, they are often not equipped with the maturity and understanding they need to express or Cynthia Hoff, chair; photo by Andrew Sterling.

When asked why she is involved with Wonders & Worries, Cynthia replied, “I really believe in their cause.” She was introduced to the organization four years ago when she and her husband, David, attended ¡Que Maravilla! Cynthia has continued to lend her time and support to increasing awareness of the organization in the community. She loves Wonders & Worries’ dedication to meeting the needs of the clients through counseling, training, classes, and group activities. In addition to Wonders & Worries, Cynthia is a long-time volunteer at a local hospital and a member of Impact Austin.

Bang For Your Buck. The Organization and Its Mission Wonders & Worries helps children and their families cope when a parent or caregiver has a chronic or life-threatening illness. The impact of a parent’s serious illness on a child can be profound. It can affect their mental health, family functioning, school performance, friendships, growth and development, and overall adjustment. Typically, children in these situations are reported to experience behavioral changes, physical complaints, anxiety, decreased use of effective coping skills, and changes in sleeping and eating patterns. Wonders & Worries counsels children in understanding the situation and handling these potential negative effects. The organization gives parents the resources and support to help their family work through such a crisis. Founded in 2001 by certified life specialists, Meredith Cooper and Melissa Hicks, Wonders and Worries has grown to include 510 active families, with 1,446 children as direct clients. All Wonders & Worries services are offered free of charge to people of any age, gender, socio-economic status and ethnicity – and are available in English and Spanish. Funds from !Que Maravilla! directly benefit services such as individual and group counseling, parent/ child relationship training classes, recreational group activities, and bereavement support sessions.

his Longhorn heart longed for Austin. When he decided to make Austin his home base, Jones also decided to play a role in the Boys and Girls Club of Austin, where he currently serves on the Board of Directors. “I am from Lubbock and grew up in the Boys Club. It was a safe haven…a place to go after school and stay out of trouble. When I wasn’t playing sports I was at the club. When I moved to Austin I wanted to do something for the club. I believe in giving back.” In that spirit, Jones founded the Brian Jones Celebrity Golf Classic, inviting celebrities from entertainment and sports arenas to come to Austin for the “hottest tournament of the year.” Played in the end of August, the tournament has certainly earned that distinction. “We have really grown. Last year we raised $60,000 and everyone has been very supportive. From the sponsors to the teams, everyone has a good time.” For Jones one of the highlights is a dinner held at Ruth Chris Steakhouse every year in conjunction with the tournament. “We always take 15 to 20 kids for a nice dinner. They have etiquette classes first and we try to help them feel confident. When I was recruited at UCLA, the coach and athletic director took me to dinner at a fancy restaurant, and I know how intimidating it can be when you have never experienced that. I want to prepare our kids to succeed and know that they can be comfortable in any situation.” He smiles at the thought of the dinner—a man living an enviable life confident that he can help others in the same way the Boys Club helped him.

60 Hikes within 60 Miles: Austin and San Antonio by Tom Taylor A practical guide that not only will get you moving but gives you the tools you need to do so, this book lists a wide array of possible hikes in the area including the author’s recommendations and personal favorites. Every hike listed includes details on the length of the trail, hiking time, difficulty, hike maps and directions to the trailhead, and special interest hikes focusing on wildlife, historical points or family-friendly options are featured. There are more Austin trails than San Antonio trails featured, and for the hardiest of explorers, this guide may seem somewhat tame as it features public trails and lacks anything off the beaten path. Pool Problems and Speedy Solutions Many of Austin’s most established and desirable neighborhoods are aging. As homeowners, it is important to maintain and update your existing structures, and for many that includes a backyard pool. As your pool matures, you may experience problems with the plaster or tile from chemicals, hot temperatures, and UV rays. The most common problems associated with existing pools are: đƫ Deterioration: The stiffening and failure of the vinyl. đƫ Delamination: A pop-off of plaster; when a piece of plaster breaks đƫ Etching: Aggressive water attack by acidic chemicals to pool plaster.

away from the pool floor and causes a crater-like formation. 14

đƫ Fading: The slow change of color in pool plaster. Homeowners must maintain these amenities to preserve property value and keep their home looking the best it possibly can. The most important element of the pool is the foundation. With the proper planning, replastering and repairs to these common pool aging problems can be solved efficiently and effectively. We followed Spring Brothers Pool Company on a recent job in the hills of Barton Creek. We found that in most cases, replaster repairs are completed in less than 24 hours! When faced with the much needed repair of your pool, it’s important to consider installations for updating your existing structure including spas, fountains, grottos, and lighting features. The easiest changes for the con-

are available in just about any color you could imagine. From the standard Marcite to a glossy B-Finish, the grain of plaster can make your pool glisten during the day and under the moonlight. Finally, incorporating underwater lighting allows a pool system to change moods. The colors of lights are tailored and timed to your individual needs and are a fun experience for those in and out of the water. Spring Brothers Pool Company, LLC is the go-to company for a countless number of Austin pool designer and building companies. Frequenly working with DaVida Pools, Hample Pool and Services, and Boomer Block Pools, to name a few, has made for an extensive portfolio. From small backyard pools to Texas-shaped pools with Longhorn logos to extensive hill-side pools with man made rivers and caves, Spring Brother’s has done it all. Jaime Prieto, the sole proprietor, boasts over 20 years of experience in the pool plaster business and additional expertise from his son, Eric Prieto, and their equally experienced crew. My partner and I were honored to be the Judges for the 2008 Masters of Design Competition, one of the most prestigious competitions in the pool industry. As judges, we learned to evaluate projects to distinguish awardwinning pools from the large number of those entered into the competition. All were beautiful, but only a handful of the pools were exceptional. This was the criterion we used to determine what makes an award-winning pool: As with any “work of art,” an award-winning pool needs to “move” the beholder and please the senses. An award-winning pool must be based on good design principles (color, line, contour, texture, balance, rhythm, etc.) and demonstrate quality workmanship. Not just the shape of the pool or the materials used, all of the aspects of the design must be cohe1 & 2 Cody Pools APSP 2009 Gold Award Winners

to wrap the cylinder with a green ti leaf. The vein of the leaf is shaved down with a floral knife blade so that it can easily be wrapped around a curved surface. Natural raffia is bound tightly around the leaf to keep it in place. 3 Once the cylinder is filled with water, you can begin constructing the actual floral arrangement. We recommend first creating a “base” of greenery; in this case we used scented green geranium leaf. 4 Then, we added the artichokes and floral elements one by one, making sure to keep the stems long enough to allow them to touch the base of the vase. For a more airy, garden feel, keep some stems longer than others to create a layered look with more depth and movement.

ARRANGEMENT 2 Cocktail Party Arrangement A whimsical and modern design perfect for a casual party. Instead of using the 6" glass cylinder as a vase we turned it upside down and used it as a modern pedestal to feature our floral pomander composed of two tone ruffled carnations accented with lily grass loops. A thick black grosgrain ribbon was simply glued to the cylinder to create a chic banding accent.

We set out to create a parade home that was both noticeably livable and extremely sustainable, not just a “flash in the pan” for the parade event. Quality of execution and durability of construction were very important in our project programming, providing our homeowner with a functioning building system for years to come. From the very beginning, with site selection, we insisted on a north-facing home site that would allow for the best quality day lighting from the large front windows of the home. Our home site

Our inspiration for the home in the Parade was to create a warm, inviting, fun atmosphere, that had a modern feel and included the latest technology. Along with Audio Video Designs, we decided to use the automated projection screen with the hidden HD Front Projection System to incorporate that technology into a space that could serve not only as a media room, but also as a multi-purpose space. By containing all of the components for the Media Room, the whole house audio system, and the televisions around the home in the component closet of the Media Room, we were able to eliminate unsightly boxes, cables, and wires typically associated with home theater and television systems. We also installed California Audio Technology in wall speakers in

the Robert Mueller Airport former control tower and the downtown Austin skyline. In addition to the incredible outdoor living spaces already mentioned, we were able to include a living vegetable garden with a lime tree, tomato plant, and spices. In this space we were also able to include a full cooking island with GE Monogram Grill, sink and mini-fridge. If the views and outdoor cooking weren’t enough, how about bringing the outside in? Our family room combines with a courtyard via 16’ sliding doors. This courtyard features a waterfall cascading from one of two-second floor balconies. The home far exceeded our expectations in terms of design. The Parade of Homes Judges agreed awarding our home with Best Outdoor Living Space and Front Elevation.

sources they deem appropriate for their viewing and listening needs throughout the house, as well as the covered patio and the Garden Roof. The Crestron Control panels have the ability to control lighting, window treatments, and HVAC in the Media Room and throughout the home. The garden roof is the most unusual feature included in this home, and I think in the entire Parade of Homes. The inspiration was to utilize rooftop space to create a living, growing garden that would serve as get-away from everyday issues. It not only creates a place for the homeowner to garden in a subdivision that offers little space in the yards below, but also serves as a space to read a book, drink a glass of wine, or gaze at the stars. The rooftop garden eliminates heat transfer from the roof, and acts as an insulator for the garage located below.

Our vision was to create an energy efficient Home that would accomplish 3 additional goals. The first goal was to make the home feel as inviting and warm as possible while providing a layout that was functional for everyday use. We then wanted to create a work at home space separate from the main house which will allow the homeowner to separate their work life from home life without having to commute. Last, but not least, we wanted to create a variety of indoor and outdoor entertainment spaces. The front porch has space to accommodate neighborhood street parties and features an outdoor fireplace and tv. An outdoor kitchen and alfresco dining area overlooking a courtyard and fountain off the back of the home. We added additional cedar roll up doors off the courtyard area leading into the garage to accommodate the need for extra

Austin is one of the few places in Texas where you can purchase a natural-gas powered Honda Civic GX, rated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as the cleanest internal-combustion engine on the planet. Texas Gas Service customers in Austin and Sunset Valley can obtain a $2,000 rebate on the car through the company’s Conservation Program. A federal tax credit of $4,000 is also available. The most interesting feature about the GX may be that you can fuel it from your own garage

if you have natural gas at your home. An NGV home refueling device, like the one that recently won “Most Unique Green Feature” as a part of this year’s Parade of Homes, connects to your home’s natural gas line and allows you to refuel your car overnight. It also comes with a $2,000 rebate from the Texas Gas Service Conservation Program and a $2,000 federal tax credit. The other upsides of driving an NGV have to do with the fuel itself. Natural gas currently costs less than $1.25 per gallon of gasoline equivalent in the Austin area and creates fewer greenhouse emissions than gasoline. So you’re not only saving money, but also helping to reduce your carbon footprint. It’s just another reason to stay relaxed as you enjoy the summer. Duct Sealing & Attic Insulation Whether at home or on the go, it’s great to enjoy the outdoors in Central Texas, and even better when you know you’re coming back to a cool and comfortable home. Don’t let that good feeling get blown away by stress over your energy bills.

Air conditioning can consume between onethird and one-half of your annual energy budget. For many people, more than 25 percent of the money slips away through leaks and gaps in their homes and cooling systems. That’s why it’s a no-brainer to invest in weatherizing your home, upgrading your insulation (especially in the attic), and sealing your heating and air-conditioning ductwork against leaks. The Texas Gas Service Conservation Program and Austin Energy work together to make it easy for you to put that money back in your pocket as you head outdoors for summer fun. Both utilities offer cash incentives for attic insulation and duct sealing and can also provide you with helpful tips for choosing a contractor or planning an energy efficiency upgrade. In addition, Texas Gas Service’s rebate programs include cash incentives for upgrading your gas furnace, water heater and even your clothes washer (in collaboration with Austin Energy and the Austin Water Utility) to new energyefficient models. It is a true miracle to watch your landscape grow and flourish. At some point you begin to wonder, after all this hard work, patience, and money, what does your landscape really do for you? This is where functionality meets personality. Like each area inside the home serves its purpose, it also showcases your lifestyle and character. Why should it be any different when designing a landscape? By identifying how you would like to enjoy your outdoor space, you can incorporate your personality in the design and create a new living space that uniquely serves that purpose. Whether it is a tranquil environment to read your favorite book, a place to entertain the kids, or a romantic getaway for you and your significant other, your outdoor space can have meaning and charisma. WHAT TO DO IN

Let the landscape rest. We are entering our least productive season for planting here in Central Texas, except for the following tough summer vegetables. Accordingly, the planting recommendations are slim this month. Your best bet is to survive through the heat while you plan for the fall garden. Prepare beds for the fall vegetable garden. Add compost and till in. Consider planting cover crops in fallow areas to protect and improve the soil. Cut back spring tomatoes for a fall crop. Healthy spring-planted tomatoes can be cut back by 2/3 to stimulate new growth for fall. Be sure there are plenty of leaves remaining to sustain life. Fertilize with Lady

Spruce up the garden. Now is the time to do lowenergy activities in the garden, if anything. Prune off dead limbs. Add yard art, a birdbath or feeder, or perhaps a pink flamingo.
