Students of the Week from area High Schools Middlebury Union High School
We are pleased to introduce Tasha Hescock as the Middlebury Union High School student of the week. A resident of Shoreham, Tasha is the daughter of Loraine and Tim Hescock and enjoys school and her service as a volunteer as a third-grade Sunday school teacher’s assistant at St. Mary’s Church in Middlebury. Tasha enjoys a variety of academic subjects but favors the sciences. This year, as a senior, she is taking three Advanced Placement classes: World History, English and Statistics, and is also enrolled in Physics. Last summer, she participated in a special program at Massachusetts Institute of Technology that involved five weeks of online coursework and five days on the campus in Cambridge. She chose to study science and technology writing as part of the program at MIT and found the subjects intriguing. Learning online brought forth a whole new dimension to her study habits and Tasha enjoyed the challenge, but welcomed the opportunity to meet her classmates in person when she spent time on the MIT campus last summer. She said the experience confirmed her interest in science and her desire to pursue the field when she enrolls in college next year. She is Tasha Hescock looking forward to studying science at a four-year liberal arts college MUHS somewhere in the Northeast or the Mid-Atlantic region. An active member of the MUHS drama program, Tasha has been in the last three productions staged: “Legally Blonde,” “Into the Woods” and this fall’s “The Little Mermaid.” She portrayed both a princess and a sea creature in the most recent production. She loves to bake and cook in her spare time and her specialty is sponge cake. While at school, Tasha serves as a peer leader and enjoys working alongside fellow members of the class of 2017 as they connect with the entering freshmen. Her advice to the ninth-graders is to take classes in areas that you love and to ask questions and participate. In addition to her love of science, Tasha says some of her fun classes have been in the arts and music, and she has liked learning how to play the guitar and pursue painting. She is a member of SCOHR, a student group that focuses on human rights, and would like to continue this work in college. Given Tasha’s positive attitude and outlook, we know she has a bright future ahead of her and we wish her well in the final months of her senior year at MUHS.

Vergennes Union High School
Vergennes Union High School is pleased to recognize Caroline Johnston as its Student of the Week. Caroline lives in Addison with her parents, Michael and Amy Johnston. Caroline has two older siblings: Margaret, a second-year UVM medical student, and Timothy, a senior at Eckerd College. Caroline took two AP courses her junior year: AP Literature and Composition and AP Calculus. She is currently enrolled in AP Language. Last year she was inducted into the National Honor Society and is currently the secretary. She earned the Clarkson High School Achievement Award, and challenges herself in mathematics and in meeting five guidelines for English. Caroline represented VUHS at Girls State last summer, and has also made honors and high honors every semester at VUHS. Outside of the classroom, Caroline was the vice president of her class for the past two years and is currently one of the two librarians of the band. She is a member of the varsity soccer and basketball teams, and is also part of the Addison United Soccer team and AAU Basketball. As a junior, she joined the varsity track team, placing Caroline Johnston fourth in the 400 meter dash in Division 2. Caroline is also on the VUHS Math Team and Peace One Day committee. Caroline gives these words of advice, “From my high school experience I have learned that no matter how many people tease you for being a good student, it is worth it in the long run. I have also learned that no matter how hard it gets between school, sports and other extracurricular activities, it is very important to learn to manage them all and stick with them. Quite frankly school is not the only place where you can learn, it is important to have other interests and areas that can teach you more about teamwork and perseverance.” Sarah Thompson, a science teacher at VUHS, said this about Caroline, “Underneath Caroline’s sweet, smiling exterior is a determined student who always works hard and challenges herself. Caroline takes learning very seriously and her work shows a level of pride and precision most students don’t attempt to achieve. I have loved having Caroline as a student because she is fun, creative and always interested in learning something new.” Following graduation from VUHS, Caroline is headed to college to pursue further education, but she has yet to decide on her major. The faculty, staff and students of VUHS wish Caroline the very best in the future.
