John ‘Jack’ Bouffard, 67, Middlebury MIDDLEBURY — John Francis Bouffard, known to all as Jack, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, died suddenly on Tuesday, Feb. 23, while on a fishing trip to Pulaski, N.Y. The cause of death was cardiac arrest. He was 67 years old. Jack had lived in Addison County since 1978 when he and his wife Linda moved back to the community where they had met while students at Middlebury College. He joined the Cornwall Large Animal Clinic (now Valleywide Veterinary Services), where he served largeanimal owners and farms for the next 27 years until retiring in 2005. Jack went back to work in 2010, spending 4 years working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture based in Fresno, Calif. He and Linda returned to Middlebury last year to enjoy their second retirement among friends and family. Specializing in dairy cattle, Jack spent many days and nights visiting farms throughout Addison County. His sociable personality, respect for the farmers, and his ability to laugh at himself made him a valued part of the dairy community. He also did work through the U.S. Department of Agriculture with governments and farmers in Lithuania, Estonia, Bosnia and Ethiopia in order to help improve the dairy industries in these developing countries. Jack was born on Feb. 28, 1948, in Worcester, Mass., where he grew up with his three brothers and large extended family. He loved sports and was a key player on the basketball and baseball teams at
Assumption Preparatory School. He later played basketball at Middlebury College. He graduated from Middlebury in 1970 before going to Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. He came to Addison County after spending time with large animal practices in West Rupert, Vt., and Cape Vincent, N.Y. He did active duty with the U.S. Army and was a member of the Army Reserves. Jack married the former Linda Colwell on Aug. 15, 1970, in Indian Lake, N.Y. Their first daughter, Caroline, was born in 1974 followed by Jennifer in 1976, Elizabeth in 1980, and Jonathan in 1985. Jack loved his family and will always be remembered for his elaborate Christmas preparations, their road trips out West or to Florida and the delicious waffles he would make for family and friends at Indian Lake. Jack was passionate about his interests, which included bluegrass music, playing the banjo, learning blues guitar, waterskiing and golf. He enjoyed traveling in his camper all over the United States or in New Zealand where Carrie is raising her children. His most recent passion was fishing, which Jack enjoyed on rivers, lakes and on the ocean during all seasons of the year. On the day of his death he was fishing on the Salmon River, a favorite spot of his and where he and Jon had been fishing together just two weeks before. He is survived by Linda Bouffard of Middlebury, Caroline Bouffard and Eric Repphun of Dunedin, New Zealand, Jennifer Bouffard of Burlington, Beth Bouffard of
JOHN ‘JACK’ BOUFFARD Oakland, Calif., and Jonathan Bouffard of New Haven. He was predeceased by his parents Albert J. Bouffard and Therese M. Gaucher Bouffard of Worcester, Mass., and his brother Paul A. Bouffard of Norman, Okla.
