Man cited for DUI, leaving crash MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Bradleigh Helenhouse, 33, of Leicester for driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident (with injuries resulting), following a report of a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Route 7 and Ossie Road in East Middlebury on Nov. 6. Police said 49-year-old Alfred Churchwell of East Middlebury was travelling south on Route 7 and getting ready to turn left onto Ossie Road when his vehicle was struck from behind by a vehicle being driven by Helenhouse. Collecting for a cause
COUSINS ELI SCHONDUBE and Spencer Gebo proudly display their UNICEF collection boxes at a donor’s house in Vergennes on Halloween night. Vergennes Union Elementary School students didn’t just collect candy this Halloween. To help children affected by a devastating hurricane season, VUES kids also trick-or-treated for UNICEF this year, collecting $770 in spare change to send to the cause. Organizers hope to make this act of community giving part of the Vergennes area’s Halloween tradition each year and wish to thank all those who supported the cause. Photo by Lissa Gebo
City man cited for heroin possession VERGENNES — Vergennes police arrested a Vergennes man this past Saturday, Nov. 11, for multiple violations of four separate conditions of release that, according to police, all have been issued by courts since August. Police also cited the man for possession of heroin and ticketed him for possession of marijuana. Police arrested Russell Hulst, 57, for violating all four of his conditions of release by allegedly contacting an ex-girlfriend repeatedly on several occasions via text and voice mail. Vergennes police said when they found him he was hiding in the trunk of a car driven by his wife — Christina Hulst, 40, of Salisbury — who was then charged with driving with a criminally suspended license. Police said a witness in Middlebury who saw Hulst get in the car’s trunk on High Street alerted Middlebury police, who then passed word along to Vergennes police. City police said they were also concerned that Hulst might be armed with a shotgun, and they used what they called “high-risk stop” tactics to pull over the car near the Ferrisburgh McDonald’s Restaurant at about 11 a.m. on Saturday. Police said as well as Russell

Hulst, they found in the car a substance that appeared to be heroin, a small amount of marijuana, and drug paraphernalia, and they cited Russell Hulst for the drugs.
