City police cite four on retail theft VERGENNES — Vergennes police have issued four citations for retail theft dating back to two separate late-January cases at Kinney Drug Store in which personal and skin care items were stolen. Police said they received help from members of the public and other law enforcement agencies in identifying four suspects after the city department made public on Feb. 17 pictures of the suspects captured from Kinney Drugs security cameras. Cited into court for retail theft were William E. Crowl and Malissa Crowl, both 45, of Vergennes; and Christopher A. Coccia, 40, and Penni Coccia, 46, both of North Clarendon. Vergennes police said they received assistance from area news media, concerned citizens, the Rutland Police Department, Vermont State Police and the Vermont Department of Probation and Parole. The thefts were not uncovered until early February, when Kinney Drugs performed an inventory review, police said. Police and Kinney employees then reviewed security footage. Last week, on Feb. 16, Kinney Drugs reported another theft, this

In other action between Feb. 13 and 19, Vergennes police: • On Feb. 13 ticketed and towed a car parked on city streets in violation of the city’s wintertime overnight parking ban. • On Feb. 14 were told a portable radio and charger had been stolen from Northlands Job Corps. • On Feb. 15 cited a Vergennes Union High School student into juvenile court for possessing alcohol on school grounds. • On Feb. 16 issued a no-trespass order to a woman who had become
combative with People’s United Bank employees when they asked her to move her car from the bank parking lot. • On Feb. 16 checked the welfare of a Main Street resident on behalf of his family; he was OK. • On Feb. 17 dealt with two cars after reports they were being driven erratically, backing up VSP in one case and not issuing a ticket in the other. • On Feb. 18 stopped another car on Route 7 after a report of tailgating and warned the driver. • On Feb. 18 ticketed the driver of a pickup on South Maple Street for defective equipment after its exhaust fell off in front of a car, which ran over the equipment and punctured a tire. • On Feb. 19 checked the welfare of an elderly Hillside Drive resident and called the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad because she appeared to be having a medical problem. • On Feb. 19 called state police after a Ferrisburgh resident came to the station and reported he had been assaulted by his girlfriend; according to Vergennes police VSP cited the woman for domestic assault.
Alleged assault under investigation
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police launched an investigation into an alleged domestic assault in the Delancy Lane area on Feb. 15. Police had not made any arrests in the matter as the Independent went to press. In other action last week, Middlebury police: • Were informed of a theft from a Middlebury College dorm room (off Chateau Road) on Feb. 13. Police said they found no evidence of forced entry into the room. • Received a report on Feb. 13 that two men had left Shaw’s Supermarket without paying for wine. • Investigated a vandalism complaint at a Seymour Street residence on Feb. 13. • Assisted Porter Hospital officials with an “out-of-control” woman on Feb. 14. • Were contacted on Feb. 14 by a Middlebury Union High School student who alleged her exboyfriend had been threatening her and claimed he would harm himself. Middlebury’s school resource officer helped resolve the issue. • Investigated a report on Feb. 14 that two women had attempted to kick the glass out of the bus waiting area on Merchants Row. Police said they found no damage. • Investigated allegations that a man had stolen three containers of wine from Shaw’s Supermarket on Feb. 14. Store officials told police they believe the culprit had previously stolen wine from business. • Assisted Middlebury Regional EMS with a medical call on Elm Street on Feb. 15.

Police said the pedestrian, who sustained minor injuries, was taken to Porter Hospital by Middlebury Regional EMS. • Cited William Harris, 58, of Middlebury for retail theft, following an alleged incident at Shaw’s Supermarket on Feb. 15. • Responded to a one-vehicle crash on Route 7 South on Feb. 15. Police said an occupant of the vehicle sustained minor injuries. • Received a report on Feb. 16 about a possible sexual assault alleged to have occurred in the Middlebury area “several years ago,” according to police. The Addison County Unit for Special Investigations is helping local police look into the allegations. • Received a report about an “irate patient” at Porter Hospital on Feb. 16. • Turned over, to Middlebury College Public Safety, a man who was seen staggering on South Main Street on Feb. 17. • Tended to a noise complaint in the Weybridge Street area during the early morning of Feb. 17. • Responded to a noise complaint at a Weybridge Street residence on Feb. 17. • Assisted a driver who had gone
off the road on Lower Foote Street on Feb. 17. • Issued court diversion paperwork on Feb. 18 to a young woman who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol on Middlebury College campus. Police also issued the woman court diversion paperwork for being a minor in possession of alcohol. • Cited Mike Giorgio, 49, of Middlebury for driving under the influence, following a one-vehicle accident off School House Hill Road on Feb. 18. Police said they measured Giorgio’s blood-alcohol level at 0.099 percent; the legal limit for driving is 0.08. • Responded to a report of a drunken student on Middlebury College campus on Feb. 18. Police said the woman was taken to Porter Hospital for treatment. • Responded to a report of a loud party at a Weybridge Street residence on Feb. 18. Police said the party was breaking up when they arrived. • Investigated a report about an alleged fight in a Court Street apartment building on Feb. 18. Police said the two individuals in question were “only horse playing.” Police cautioned the pair about making noise. • Informed the local game warden about a report of an aggressive dog in the Case Street area on Feb. 18. • Checked the welfare of an Otterside Court resident who was reported late for work and not answering the phone on Feb. 18. • Received a report about an alleged assault on the Porter Hospital campus on Feb. 19. Police said the case remains under investigation.
Police ask for leads in burglaries ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police are looking into two burglaries at Route 7 businesses in North Ferrisburgh that both occurred in the early morning hours last Friday or late the night before. The first was at the Vermont Flannel Company at 5467 Route 7. Troopers said their investigation showed that someone had forced their way through the front door after hours and stole merchandise. Police said the incident occurred sometime between 5:35 p.m. on Feb. 16 and 6:45 a.m. on Feb. 17. The other burglary was just a short ways north at 5797 Route 7 at Dakin Farms. Similarly, someone forced their way through the front door while the store was empty. Police put the time of the burglary at 1:45 a.m. on Friday the 17th. police: • On Feb. 15 cited into court Lyle N. Lenher, 24, of Brandon for sexual assault. State police report that on Aug. 15, 2016, they were notified of a sexual assault on Brandon. As they investigated state police determined that they have evidence suggesting that Lenher sexually assaulted a female on Aug. 13, 2016, in Brandon. The case was handled by the Rutland Unit for Special Investigations, a multidisciplinary team that investigates, prosecutes and serves victims of sex crimes and child victims of severe physical abuse throughout Rutland County. • On Feb. 16 at approximately 8:12 p.m. stopped a vehicle driven by Hunter Birchmore, 20, on Findley Bridge Road in Bethel. Roadside investigation showed that Birchmore, a Brandon resident, was driving under the influence of alcohol; police did not provide a blood alcohol content. Police cited
Birchmore for DUI. • On Feb. 18 stopped vehicle on Route 17 in New Haven, and determined that the driver, identified as 43-year-old Angela Thomas of Bridport, was operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. A field sobriety tests showed a blood alcohol content of 0.137 percent; the legal limit for driving is 0.08. The trooper cited Thomas for DUI. • On Feb. 19 observed a vehicle travelling down the center of Bristol-Monkton Road in Monkton at around 1:30 a.m. Troopers stopped the vehicle and identified the operator as Pearly A. Edgerly, 59, of Fairfax. While Troopers spoke with Pearly they observed several signs of impairment. Following standard field sobriety exercises it was determined Edgerly was driving under the influence of drugs; and they said they found he was in possession of a regulated substance. Police cited Edgerly for DUI-drugs. • On Feb. 19 at 5:30 p.m. responded to a report of a domestic assault in Ferrisburgh. State police investigated and ended up citing Melissa Sird, 35, of Ferrisburgh for domestic assault.

Salisbury SALISBURY — The Town’s Annual Meeting will be held Saturday, March 4 at 3 p.m. in the Salisbury Community School. There will be discussion of the various money articles and a short annual meeting of the Town School District. There will be displays by committees of their accomplishments during the past and activities for children. The doors at the school will open at 2 p.m. so people can view the various exhibits by the town groups before

the formal meeting at 3 p.m. Following the meeting there will be a potluck supper. Voting by Australian ballot for town officers and money articles will take place on Tuesday, March 7 in the town office. Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; there is an error in the town report concerning the hours. Absentee ballots are now available for early voting. Residents may pick up the ballots at the town office or call for one to be mailed to them.
Copies of the updated voter check list are posted at the post office and the town office so citizens can check their status. If they wish to register to vote they may do so during regular office hours up to and including the actual day of voting, Tuesday, March 7. The Conservation Committee will host a program in the community school on Wednesday, March 8 at 7 p.m. Jim and Kris Andrews will present a slide show of their trip to Tanzania. Everyone is welcome.
