Edward Alexander ‘Sandy’ Martin, 89, Middlebury MIDDLEBURY — We have all lost a kind, intelligent, gentle and compassionate soul. On January 12th, 2017, exactly five months before he would have turned 90, Edward Alexander Martin – Sandy to all – has peacefully gone on to whatever comes next. A loving husband, father and loyal friend. Sandy was a gardener, scholar and intellectual, beekeeper, writer, fisherman, hand mower and a superb listener with a wry sense of humor. Born on June 12, 1927, in New York City to Dorothy Freeman Martin and Alexander Tertius Martin MD, Sandy graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy, Princeton University, Columbia University and earned his BA, MA, PhD (or “BAh, MAh, PHuD” as he termed his degrees) in English/American Literature. He was drafted into the navy at the end of World War II but did not serve the prescribed time in service and was drafted again during the Korean War. Sandy married Margaret Funk (Peg) in 1957 while still in graduate school and he and Peg moved to Middlebury College in 1961. As an instructor, eventually tenured professor and Chair of the English Department, Sandy taught generations of Middlebury students the basics of writing and passed along his joy of literature. He was Assistant Director of the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference under poet John Ciardi, where his calm demeanor diplomatically defused “artistic” temperaments. Officially retired from Middlebury College in 1996 Sandy continued to work parttime helping teach an experimental course for students interested medical careers. Sandy was an H.L. Mencken scholar and wrote two published books on Mencken: “H.L. Mencken and the Debunkers” and “In Defense

EDWARD ALEXANDER “SANDY” MARTIN of Marion.” Sandy’s personal and professional belief in the equality of women was in part impetus for his second book in that Marion Bloom was an important, unrecognized intellectual influence on H.L. as well as his longtime paramour. (Best sellers? – no, but well received by Mencken scholars and admirers). Sandy also served several terms as the President of the H.L. Mencken Society (Baltimore), a national organization that aims to keep “The Bard” and the “Saturday Night Club” alive and well. Sandy was an active early member of the Middlebury Ambulance Association back when the ambulance was a box on wheels and the backboards handmade. As a parent and educator who believed strongly in public schools, he served multiple terms on both the Mary Hogan and Middlebury Union High School boards and valiantly fought a losing battle to keep “Twilight” Hall in town possession.
Sandy is survived by his wife, Peg, and their four children; Son Quentin Alexander Martin and Angel Rayford (LA); Son Ian Stewart Martin, his wife Nancy McClaran and grand-daughters Bryn and Reed (Lincoln VT); Son Robert Geddes Martin, his wife MaryAnna BishopMartin, grand-daughter Claire and grand-son Avery (Orcas Island, WA); Daughter Margaret Carveth Martin, her husband Curtiss Calleo and grand-son Aidan (Williamsburg, NY). The Martin family is incredibly grateful for the extraordinary support from Addison County Home Health and Hospice aides and nurses (PO Box 764, Middlebury, VT 05753) and the amazing Project Independence Program staff (PO Box 581, Middlebury, VT 05753). If you are so inclined these two wonderful organizations put all donations to good use. Sandy stories and remembrances welcomed at pmartin@middlebury. edu or snail mail – 33 Seminary St., Middlebury, VT 05753. A gathering in Sandy’s honor is planned for a later date. Please read a book, go fishing, plant a garden and walk in peace! ◊
Cremation With A Service... A Celebration of Life, for those left behind, helps those family members and friends with closure. Even though your loved one says “I just want to be cremated– no funeral,” they forget the Celebration of Life service is not for them, but for the ones left behind. A service is a healthy way to say good-bye.
