Welcome to our Spring 2019 season When introducing each season I tend to draw on the works of theatre makers for inspiration, but for this season the words of living-legend George R. R. Martin seem far too apt. This is a season full of ‘old friends’. We will be revisiting classics and bringing familiar stories to the stage in new ways. However, what excites me most is the new work our students create. In addition to familiar stories, we have a spectacular array of new student writing for you to sample in our Spring Season. Whatever your tastes, I am sure you will find something within these pages. At the start of the student term, we bring to the stage the nation’s favourite play, Alan Bennett’s The History Boys (p8). Following eight bright but rowdy upper-sixth boys as they apply to Cambridge, this production has even greater relevance when performed by University of Cambridge students. Later in the season, we have another modern classic of particular relevance in Cambridge: Douglas Adams’s utterly bizarre and weirdly wonderful Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency (p16). An alumnus of the ADC Theatre himself, Douglas Adams’s novel has been adapted for the stage by James Gross and Arvind Ethan David, and takes us from modern day Cambridge to the creation of the Universe and back again. We are incredibly lucky at the ADC to be working with some of the most talented Musical Theatre performers in Cambridge. Our spring musical season takes on the theme of stories retold. We begin with She Loves Me (p12), a warm and romantic story based on the 1937 play

Parfumerie that is considered by many to be the most charming musical ever written. Later in the season we have cult favourite, Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of the Worlds (p29), which infuses H.G.Wells’ story with a rock orchestra. Omigod You Guys, our season closes with award-winning, laugh-out-loud musical Legally Blonde (p22)! Adapted from the 2001 film starring Reese Witherspoon, this feminist masterpiece takes us from the sorority house, to lavish Malibu golf courses and the hallowed halls of Harvard Law School. This season, 40% of our applications took the form of new student writing and I am delighted that we have a season so full of new work. Our Playroom season opens with Bastard (p5). The third play written by student Billie Collins to be produced in our venues, this one-man show explores fatherhood and inheritance. At the ADC Theatre we have Northern Irish farce, Grave Concern (p27). Written by student Connor Rowlett, this play is Sean O’Casey meets Martin McDonagh. We close our Playroom season with an exploration of the apocalyptic. The Unbelievable Ending of the World (p21) uses projection, puppetry and paranoia to tell the story of a person living through climate disaster. From Shakespearean tragedy to modern classics, stories retold to new tales, we have a full and exciting season ahead of us. Whether it is an ‘old friend’ you are after or a completely new story, our season will cater for you. We are the centre of Cambridge’s thriving drama scene: productions here are put together entirely by students, amateurs, and volunteers. From actors and technical crew to directors and producers, everyone is here to enjoy and produce high-quality theatre. Training, learning and support are at the heart of everything we do here, and we are set up to provide help and guidance to inexperienced users.
The ADC Theatre currently receives no external funding and we are committed to keeping our ticket prices low and our bar affordable, so that both our student and adult audiences can experience and enjoy as much theatre as possible. Many of our performers today could be the famous names of tomorrow. With your support we can ensure that they get the best theatrical training we can offer, with industry standard theatrical equipment, financial support for ambitious and innovative productions, and an ongoing investment in our backstage facilities.

Jo, the second eldest of the March daughters and an aspiring writer, receives yet another rejection from a publisher. Professor Bhaer tells Jo she can do better by making her stories more personal. But when reality sets in and she must return to her routine existence, she’ll go to any lengths to be free. Bored, bewildered and staring straight down the barrel of adolescence, she has little choice but to ponder out loud on the nature of friendship, grief, solitude, and what it means to enter womanhood via the margins. With Edward Albee’s trademark acerbic wit and humour, The Goat is a hugely enjoyable parable that plumbs the deepest questions of social constraints on the individual expression of love. WILD HONEY by Anton Chekhov, translated and adapted by Michael Frayn ‘You funny creature! A woman who loves you - a woman you love - fine summer weather. What could be simpler than that?’ Charming, handsome, and witty, once upon a time Platonov seemed bound for greatness. Now he is a simple country schoolteacher and husband to a dutiful yet unimaginative wife. After a long winter, summer has finally arrived and the village Don Juan will do anything for a bit of excitement.

GAIL SUMMERFIELD: OLDER, WISER, FUNNER, SILLIER ORLANDO
by Virginia Woolf adapted for the stage by Sarah Ruhl Adapted from Virginia Woolf’s novel, ‘the longest and most charming love letter in literature’ (Nigel Nicolson) playfully constructs the figure of Orlando as the fictional embodiment of Woolf’s close friend and lover, Vita Sackville-West. Orlando, a beautiful charismatic nobleman, enjoys a lifetime of adventures, love and debauchery, spanning five centuries. At the midpoint of this period, whilst serving as ambassador to Constantinople, Orlando wakes from a seven-day sleep to find he has become a woman. A dreamy adaptation, Sarah Ruhl’s Orlando is a magical and poetic dance between gender and through time, a fantastical world in which courtly movement and biographical narration combine to tell the story of someone who lives outside of human expectations, and enjoys twice the experience that humanity has to offer. SHE LOVES ME book by Joe Masteroff, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, music by Jerry Bock ‘But - strangely enough – you were right, Mr Nowack! – when you’d guessed I’d never met the man I was waiting for. He was just someone who’d been writing letters to me – such glorious letters.’ Set in a 1930’s Budapest parfumerie, She Loves Me is a hilarious, heart-warming and Olivier Award winning musical that follows the love lives of the various employees. Amalia Balash and Georg Nowack have not once seen eye to eye, with almost nothing in common except the fact that both have been writing anonymous love letters to a romantic stranger they met through a lonely-hearts ad. But when a date is finally set and identities are to be revealed, the two may find that true love is not without its surprises.

Charlie has spent his entire life followed by bad luck. He misses his trains, spills all his drinks, and somehow, every single time he goes into a park, he comes out of it with bird poo in his hair. It’s a part of his life that’s become all too easy to get used to, to laugh at – and to blame things on when they go wrong.
Footlights Members Friso de Graaf and Gabriel Barton-Singer return from their Edinburgh Fringe success with a classic sketch show filled with wit, sarcasm and irreverence. A Plane Old Sketch Show does away with all the ploys and tricks of other sketch shows and just presents good, funny sketches for an hour of simple, funny comedy without gimmicks. The show is all set on an airplane. But other than that, there are no gimmicks at all, we promise. Presenting satirical, dynamic and hysterical sketches for an hour of non-stop hilarity, these two promise to have you crying with laughter by the end of the show.

Within three months, Ava is giving evidence against her husband in a destructively public murder trial. As she constructs a narrative of the past three months to an investigator, her distraught daughter begins to piece together an alternative course of events that would exonerate her father. As events spiral out of her control and the paranoia of being watched amplifies Ava’s anxiety and shame, these tragic events of Ava’s life play out in the most public of forums. It’s Friday evening, Manhattan, 1969, and Nicholas Payne returns home from a long day on Wall Street. His mother suggests he ‘see someone to help him’. We soon realise that Nicholas is in a predicament. He tries to liberate himself from this unexplained anguish, but the audience is left guessing: what ails him so? He exhausts all options until his best friend Gino arrives and convinces him to have a drink. The alcohol’s soothing effects coax Nicholas to spill his frustrations, and Gino convinces him to hold a party. Nicholas gets into his party gear and greets the guests, but those arriving are in fact the demons of his mind. One by one, they renew the crisis to which he was subjected before inebriation. Like The Doll’s House, Hedda Gabler explores the trope of the married woman stuck in a loveless and constricting marriage and social situation, but gives it a refreshingly new and darker twist. Hedda is a victim of patriarchal society but she is angered rather than subdued by that fact – she acts out on the world and people around her, whether they deserve it or not, in a perverse but horrifyingly empowering act of revenge. A feminist anti-hero, the remarkable (and realistic) complexity of her character and psychology

Translated into a semi-modern setting, this production presents a wild rendering of Lorca’s claustrophobic original, drawing in the elements to create a visual spectacle that brings to the fore the pagan undertones of his script. An essential piece of theatre exploring cultural expectations, the gender binary, and what it means to search for new life as a woman and as a human, Yerma promises to be both a harrowing and an inspiring watch. adc bar Come along for a pre-show drink at our lively theatre bar. The ADC Bar is open Tuesday to Saturday from 7pm and stays serving until the early hours of the morning. With a friendly atmosphere and student prices, it is a popular place to come for a drink whether or not you are seeing a show. We have a fantastic range of alcoholic and soft drinks as well as snacks and ice creams to take into the show. Choose one of our 11 different gins for your gin and tonic, have a pint of Real Ale from the local Milton Brewery, or sample our Cocktail of the Week.
