ADC Theatre Spring Season 2019

Page 1

King Charles III

Welcome to our Spring 2019 season When introducing each season I tend to draw on the works of theatre makers for inspiration, but for this season the words of living-legend George R. R. Martin seem far too apt. This is a season full of ‘old friends’. We will be revisiting classics and bringing familiar stories to the stage in new ways. However, what excites me most is the new work our students create. In addition to familiar stories, we have a spectacular array of new student writing for you to sample in our Spring Season. Whatever your tastes, I am sure you will find something within these pages. At the start of the student term, we bring to the stage the nation’s favourite play, Alan Bennett’s The History Boys (p8). Following eight bright but rowdy upper-sixth boys as they apply to Cambridge, this production has even greater relevance when performed by University of Cambridge students. Later in the season, we have another modern classic of particular relevance in Cambridge: Douglas Adams’s utterly bizarre and weirdly wonderful Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency (p16). An alumnus of the ADC Theatre himself, Douglas Adams’s novel has been adapted for the stage by James Gross and Arvind Ethan David, and takes us from modern day Cambridge to the creation of the Universe and back again. We are incredibly lucky at the ADC to be working with some of the most talented Musical Theatre performers in Cambridge. Our spring musical season takes on the theme of stories retold. We begin with She Loves Me (p12), a warm and romantic story based on the 1937 play

Parfumerie that is considered by many to be the most charming musical ever written. Later in the season we have cult favourite, Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of the Worlds (p29), which infuses H.G.Wells’ story with a rock orchestra. Omigod You Guys, our season closes with award-winning, laugh-out-loud musical Legally Blonde (p22)! Adapted from the 2001 film starring Reese Witherspoon, this feminist masterpiece takes us from the sorority house, to lavish Malibu golf courses and the hallowed halls of Harvard Law School. This season, 40% of our applications took the form of new student writing and I am delighted that we have a season so full of new work. Our Playroom season opens with Bastard (p5). The third play written by student Billie Collins to be produced in our venues, this one-man show explores fatherhood and inheritance. At the ADC Theatre we have Northern Irish farce, Grave Concern (p27). Written by student Connor Rowlett, this play is Sean O’Casey meets Martin McDonagh. We close our Playroom season with an exploration of the apocalyptic. The Unbelievable Ending of the World (p21) uses projection, puppetry and paranoia to tell the story of a person living through climate disaster. From Shakespearean tragedy to modern classics, stories retold to new tales, we have a full and exciting season ahead of us. Whether it is an ‘old friend’ you are after or a completely new story, our season will cater for you. We have settled in to our newly refurbished home here at the ADC Theatre and cannot wait to welcome you through our doors once more. Victoria Collins | Theatre Manager

LITTLE WOMEN book by Allan Knee, music by Jason Howland, lyrics by Mindi Dickstein based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott

Little Women, a timeless and captivating story, is brought to life in this glorious musical. Based on Louisa May Alcott’s critically acclaimed book and with a beautiful score by award winner Jason Howland, Little Women follows the adventures of the four March sisters. Jo, the second eldest of the March daughters and an aspiring writer, receives yet another rejection from a publisher. Professor Bhaer tells Jo she can do better by making her stories more personal. Begrudgingly, Jo weaves the story of how she and her sisters grew up in Civil War America – a tale of self-discovery, heartache, and everlasting love. BASTARD by Billie Collins

‘Suddenly I felt very Shakespearean. Very Game of Thrones. No longer was I the son of Stephen Bewley. I was the bastard son of Stephen Bewley.’ Charlie is on a train from Glasgow to London Euston when he finds out that his Mum is a brilliant liar. The man he called ‘Dad’ for 21 years is not his biological father. With one Dad in remission from prostate cancer, and another about to be released from HMP Brixton, Charlie is not sure of anything anymore. Bastard tells the story of how he figures out where he came from, and where he’s going next. BAWDS

by Feargus Woods Dunlop

Crimes Against Christmas is a good old-fashioned, grown-up antidote to the traditional family pantomime. It’s a delightful, fast-moving feast of Christmas-themed, murderous fun. Take Agatha Christie’s classic thriller And Then There Were None, recast it in a 12 Days of Christmas mould and you get the idea. Pete Artridge, penniless and down on his luck, is tasked by a shadowy visitor to his detective agency with preventing the theft of a priceless Christmas bauble. He joins a group of strangers, mysteriously invited to spend the festive holiday on a remote island. They soon begin to meet their fates in increasingly quick succession and suspiciously Yule-related ways! PLAYROOM MAINSHOW TUE 8 – SAT 12 JANUARY AT 7.45PM (please note start time)

‘Farewell the tranquil mind; farewell content.’ It’s the Swinging Sixties. Free Jazz is growing. Within a smokey, dimly lit club, Iago plots his scheme to overthrow Othello. With jazz standards oozing in the background, relationships swing amongst the perils of suspicion and deceit. Jealousy, the green-eyed monster, is lurking in the shadows. BirthdA

by Sophie Treadwell

by Alannah Lewis

‘Your skin oughtn’t to curl - ought it - when he just comes near you - ought it? That’s wrong, ain’t it? You don’t get over that, do you - ever, do you or do you?’

‘People at school have been nicer to me ever since I hired them for my birthday party.’

It’s America’s Golden Age, a time of happiness, freedom, and prosperity. Or is it? For one young woman in the industrial, male-dominated world of the 1920s, life is nothing like she hoped it would be. Restless and unfulfilled in a passionless marriage and an unwanted motherhood, she finds her only joy in the form of an illicit love affair. But when reality sets in and she must return to her routine existence, she’ll go to any lengths to be free. Inspired by the infamous 1927 murder trial of Ruth Snyder, Machinal is a riveting look at the danger that can come from a life unlived.

Another year, another string of disappointments for BirthdA Girl. Bored, bewildered and staring straight down the barrel of adolescence, she has little choice but to ponder out loud on the nature of friendship, grief, solitude, and what it means to enter womanhood via the margins. Comprising a series of short tragically comical monologues told from the point of view of a young woman with Asperger’s, BirthdA provides a portrayal of the dilemmas of youth in equal parts familiar and bizarre. ‘How do I define history? It’s just one f*cking thing after another.’ Sheffield. 1982. Eight bright but rowdy upper sixth boys are aspiring to Oxbridge and Hector is in charge of getting them there, but the Headmaster has insisted on providing some new blood to help polish them. A story of sexuality, adolescence, and potential, Alan Bennett’s acclaimed and beloved The History Boys looks at a world where education is becoming less about what you are taught, and more about where it can take you.

THE GOAT, OR WHO IS SYLVIA?

DRUNK ENOUGH TO SAY I LOVE YOU?

by Edward Albee

Martin and Stevie have been happily married for many years now. With a son that they both love (and seemingly accept for being gay), a more than comfortable lifestyle, and passion left in their marriage, it seems to be the ideal life. But when Martin is interviewed by his friend Ross for his fiftieth birthday, events are set in motion that threaten to tear down this life and leave his family in tatters. With Edward Albee’s trademark acerbic wit and humour, The Goat is a hugely enjoyable parable that plumbs the deepest questions of social constraints on the individual expression of love. ‘Britain’s ultimate playwright’ Caryl Churchill’s Drunk Enough to Say I Love You is a chilling examination of masculinity, imperialism, and foreign policy. WILD HONEY by Anton Chekhov, translated and adapted by Michael Frayn ‘You funny creature! A woman who loves you - a woman you love - fine summer weather. What could be simpler than that?’ Charming, handsome, and witty, once upon a time Platonov seemed bound for greatness. Now he is a simple country schoolteacher and husband to a dutiful yet unimaginative wife. After a long winter, summer has finally arrived and the village Don Juan will do anything for a bit of excitement.

Adapted from Anton Chekhov’s untitled earliest complete work, which remained unperformed in his lifetime, Wild Honey is Michael Frayn’s romp through the Russian countryside. A blending of the farcical and the tragic, this unique piece captures the combined absurdity and despair at the heart of Chekhov’s scenario, creating the world of a gloriously bittersweet summer where none of the rules apply. GAIL SUMMERFIELD: OLDER, WISER, FUNNER, SILLIER ORLANDO

by Virginia Woolf adapted for the stage by Sarah Ruhl Adapted from Virginia Woolf’s novel, ‘the longest and most charming love letter in literature’ (Nigel Nicolson) playfully constructs the figure of Orlando as the fictional embodiment of Woolf’s close friend and lover, Vita Sackville-West. Orlando, a beautiful charismatic nobleman, enjoys a lifetime of adventures, love and debauchery, spanning five centuries. At the midpoint of this period, whilst serving as ambassador to Constantinople, Orlando wakes from a seven-day sleep to find he has become a woman. A dreamy adaptation, Sarah Ruhl’s Orlando is a magical and poetic dance between gender and through time, a fantastical world in which courtly movement and biographical narration combine to tell the story of someone who lives outside of human expectations, and enjoys twice the experience that humanity has to offer. SHE LOVES ME book by Joe Masteroff, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, music by Jerry Bock ‘But - strangely enough – you were right, Mr Nowack! – when you’d guessed I’d never met the man I was waiting for. He was just someone who’d been writing letters to me – such glorious letters.’ Set in a 1930’s Budapest parfumerie, She Loves Me is a hilarious, heart-warming and Olivier Award winning musical that follows the love lives of the various employees. Amalia Balash and Georg Nowack have not once seen eye to eye, with almost nothing in common except the fact that both have been writing anonymous love letters to a romantic stranger they met through a lonely-hearts ad. But when a date is finally set and identities are to be revealed, the two may find that true love is not without its surprises.

DI AND VIV AND ROSE

A GLITCH IN MY CODE

‘How do you want to live here? I mean we could come and go and lead separate lives. Or we could really live together. What do you think?’

‘But you seem so… so human, so… alive. Truth is I’ve never stood this close to an android before. If I hadn’t known, I wouldn’t have been able to tell.’

by Amelia Bullmore

It’s 1983. Di, Viv and Rose move into a university house and embark on the adventure that is womanhood. Across the years they roller-coaster through life encountering sex, loss and all kinds of love. As they lean in and pull apart, their relationships are tested to the point of breaking. This is a daring exploration of the enduring bond of friendship. Intelligent androids are slowly replacing vacuum cleaners, dishwashers and washing machines on the shelves of electronics shops all over the UK. They are now a common household item, just like a kettle or a toaster. Curious as to what the whole AI craze is all about, Ian, a university student, purchases one of these androids for himself. When his new mechanical helper emerges from its refrigeratorsized box, Ian begins to question if the thing in front of him is really a machine. Can something so human-like really be made of metal and plastic? But if even he is having trouble believing it... will his friend Alice ever guess that his new ‘roommate’ is not what ‘he’ seems? And what will happen if she treats ‘him’ like a human for too long? PLAYROOM MAINSHOW TUE 12 – SAT 16 FEBRUARY AT 9.30PM TICKETS TUE £7/£5, WED/THU £8/£6, FRI/SAT £9/£7

ANGELS IN AMERICA

PART 1: MILLENIUM APPROACHES by Tony Kushner Set in 1980s Reaganite America, Angels in America is a powerful exploration of queer culture and the AIDS crisis. Following three different narrative strands, the play deals with the ideas of internalised homophobia in a political landscape where otherness is rebuked, the impact the AIDS crisis had on personal relationships, and the fragile and complicated relationship that humans have with the supernatural.

BAD LUCK CHARLIE

A PLANE OLD SKETCH SHOW

Charlie has spent his entire life followed by bad luck. He misses his trains, spills all his drinks, and somehow, every single time he goes into a park, he comes out of it with bird poo in his hair. It’s a part of his life that’s become all too easy to get used to, to laugh at – and to blame things on when they go wrong.

Footlights Members Friso de Graaf and Gabriel Barton-Singer return from their Edinburgh Fringe success with a classic sketch show filled with wit, sarcasm and irreverence. A Plane Old Sketch Show does away with all the ploys and tricks of other sketch shows and just presents good, funny sketches for an hour of simple, funny comedy without gimmicks. The show is all set on an airplane. But other than that, there are no gimmicks at all, we promise. Presenting satirical, dynamic and hysterical sketches for an hour of non-stop hilarity, these two promise to have you crying with laughter by the end of the show.

by Mariam Abdel-Razek

But things change when, in the space of the same two weeks, he’s dumped and his childhood best friend dies in a freak car accident. Suddenly his unlucky life from before looks like a walk in the park. Lonely, untethered, and desperately missing his past, he attempts to reconnect it the only way he knows how – through his ex-girlfriend, Alex. Part comedy, part drama, this piece of new writing explores with tenderness and wit what grief, intimacy, and what it means to be vulnerable.

DIRK GENTLY’S HOLISTIC DETECTIVE AGENCY by James Goss and Arvind Ethan David (based on the novel by Douglas Adams) ‘These are the offices of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. Dirk Gently, owner and proprietor, at your service. Thank you for asking; the term ‘holistic’ refers to my belief in the fundamental interconnectedness of all things.’ Dirk finds himself on the trail of a gruesome murderer who is somehow involved with the works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, quantum physics, and the enigmatic study of the Cambridge Professor of Chronology.

HARROGATE by Al Smith

‘I dream about you young. When I’m asleep you’re as young as the girl I met.’ Harrogate tells the story of a father struggling to confront his obsessions without destroying his family. It is a play about the intensity of parental love and its capacity to consume, how we perform versions of ourselves depending on the company we keep, and how we project onto others versions of the people we want to see, rather than accepting who stands in front of us. Harrogate is a darkly funny, tender and uncomfortable play. It ‘defies interpretation’ and ‘has a kind word to say about everyone, yet spares no one’ (The Telegraph). The play is a triptych about obsession, repression and lust. PLAYROOM MAINSHOW TUE 26 FEB – SAT 2 MARCH AT 7PM TICKETS TUE £8/£6, WED/THU £9/£7, FRI/SAT £10/£8

PANOPTIKOS What does it mean to watch and be watched? In an age of reality television, this new play examines the human tendency towards voyeurism and our willingness to observe the suffering of others. Ava has an ideal life. A prominent GP, she has a thriving practice, a loving husband, and a talented child. Tensions arise upon the appointment of a new patient, triggering the disintegration of both her personal and professional lives. Within three months, Ava is giving evidence against her husband in a destructively public murder trial. As she constructs a narrative of the past three months to an investigator, her distraught daughter begins to piece together an alternative course of events that would exonerate her father. As events spiral out of her control and the paranoia of being watched amplifies Ava’s anxiety and shame, these tragic events of Ava’s life play out in the most public of forums. CONVERSATIONS WITH MYSELF by Leopold Benedict

It’s Friday evening, Manhattan, 1969, and Nicholas Payne returns home from a long day on Wall Street. His mother suggests he ‘see someone to help him’. We soon realise that Nicholas is in a predicament. He tries to liberate himself from this unexplained anguish, but the audience is left guessing: what ails him so? He exhausts all options until his best friend Gino arrives and convinces him to have a drink. The alcohol’s soothing effects coax Nicholas to spill his frustrations, and Gino convinces him to hold a party. Nicholas gets into his party gear and greets the guests, but those arriving are in fact the demons of his mind. One by one, they renew the crisis to which he was subjected before inebriation. The night spirals beyond his control. Hell is empty. And all the devils are here. PLAYROOM LATESHOW TUE 5 – SAT 9 MARCH AT 9.30PM TICKETS TUE £7/£5, WED/THU £8/£6, FRI/SAT £9/£7

HEDDA GABLER

by Henrik Ibsen

Like The Doll’s House, Hedda Gabler explores the trope of the married woman stuck in a loveless and constricting marriage and social situation, but gives it a refreshingly new and darker twist. Hedda is a victim of patriarchal society but she is angered rather than subdued by that fact – she acts out on the world and people around her, whether they deserve it or not, in a perverse but horrifyingly empowering act of revenge. A feminist anti-hero, the remarkable (and realistic) complexity of her character and psychology

FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA:

allows the play to transcend its 19th century setting and to become a nightmarish cautionary tale for all oppressive societies. In each new context it is revived and revisited it forces us to reflect on aspects of our own world and selves, and, perhaps, the darker parts that we’d rather ignore. YERMA

THE UNBELIEVABLE ENDING OF THE WORLD

by Federico Garcia Lorca What does it take to break a woman? Yerma and her husband, living happily married, must suddenly face the fact that they are unable to have a child. Their tragic situation quickly leads Yerma in ultimate desperation to a dark climax in which everything will change, forever. Federico Garcia Lorca’s searing tale of a woman battling the stigma of infertility in a small community bristles with urgency and injustice. Translated into a semi-modern setting, this production presents a wild rendering of Lorca’s claustrophobic original, drawing in the elements to create a visual spectacle that brings to the fore the pagan undertones of his script. An essential piece of theatre exploring cultural expectations, the gender binary, and what it means to search for new life as a woman and as a human, Yerma promises to be both a harrowing and an inspiring watch. by Will Maclean

April is worried about the world. She sees strange colours in the sky, apocalyptic headlines, and images of polar bears trapped on lumps of melting ice. She knows the world is changing, and has already changed. So April takes action. Everyone is saying that she killed her kids to stop climate change. Is this as ridiculous as it sounds? This experimental show tests your principles, and dares you to believe the unbelievable. Using projection, puppetry and paranoia, The Unbelievable Ending of the World follows the story of a person living through climate disaster who sees her options more starkly than the rest of us. Anna Ziegler’s award-winning play comes to Cambridge for the first time, following a sell-out West End debut in 2015. It’s 1953 and the race is on to uncover the secret of life: the structure of DNA. Biophysicist Rosalind Franklin is one of the few in the world able to capture an image of the mysterious structure. Does she realise she holds the key to the biggest scientific breakthrough of the 20th century? Will rival scientists beat her to it?
