staff), Joe Cerdor (our technician), and Marissa Douglas, without whom the front desk would collapse. Our “yes, I’ll fit in another patient” specialists team - Dr Gordan ‘Gordie’ Macleod, Dr Bob Hazelwood, Dr Peter Keys, Dr Thomson, Dr Sammy Tseng and Carol Bauhofer. Thank you.
It seems that the civilian staff are telling us to “get some time up”, with Dr Judith Robinson and Dr Neil Stackpool celebrating 20 years of continuous service at Holsworthy Dental. We celebrated the day and presented them both with a plaque. Congratulations on your achievements.
Dental Platoon 1 HSB Holsworthy Barracks, Sydney, NSW
All of the members of 1HSB dental quickly spread the word that dental could do more than just fillings and exams. CPL Gurkin, PTE Broadway, PTE Wilding and PTE Hosie all participated in the Anzac Day Dawn Service at Martin Place in Sydney. This was followed by a march through Sydney’s streets with the Dental Association and to wrap up the day, all 15 military personnel got to know each other extremely well as we were stuck in a lift for 45 minutes.
Just as the cogs start to turn, we are winding up the year and what a year it has been! During 2008 1HSB Dental provided support to Darwin and had the opportunity to deploy a dental team to East Timor. Holsworthy went from having skeleton staff in 2007 to being packed to the rafters in 2008. It would appear that 1HSB was the place to be.
This year we welcomed two new dental officers, one dental technician and three dental assistants. CAPT Victor Olsson-White joined us from 3CSSB. CAPT Sunshine Le left 7CSSB to come to 1HSB to get a real taste of the Army life. CPL Danielle Gurkin arrived after completing the Technician course (congratulations on receiving Student of Merit). PTE Jason Wilding arrived after a year in 7CSSB. We also welcomed PTE Karla Hosie and PTE Gonja Ozudogru both from HMAS CERBERUS. These members had the privilege of joining the “A-Grade Dental Team” of MAJ Jeff Ong, SGT Kiron Kilpatrick, CPL Adam Collins, PTE Angela Audet (nee Smith) and PTE Ann Broadway. And holding down the fort when all the greens disappear are Dr Neil Morris (SDO), Dr Neil Stackpool, Dr Mark Lerche, Dr Judith Robinson, Dr Annie Badve, Dr Liz Martin, Dr Ross Adams (ortho), Dr Mahes Wanigesekera (endo), Dr Liz Hogan (perio), Dr Russel Vickers (oral surgery), Rebecca Jamsek (hygienist), Amanda Heron (SDA), Michelle Cacchia, Sandra Iturra, Sue Tattler, Eva Pioro, Debbie Herbert, Carmel Greenwood and Brian Mitchell.
MAJ Ong took every opportunity to drum up business taking teeth out. His beloved Lexus takes pride of place in the carpark (just don’t park next to it). MAJ Ong is quite unfortunate having to take a “service requirement” posting to Randwick. CAPT OlssonWhite worked at HMAS WATSON one day a week where the day is surprisingly the same as battle PT day. Unfortunately CAPT Olsson-White will be discharging in 2009 and leaves us at the end of the year when he moves to Perth to commence OMFS training. CAPT Le joined us for 2008 but she has also chosen to discharge (for the second time). CAPT Le provided us with lots of laughter with her driving stories, her car is like a book where every panel on it has a story (but none her fault). SGT Kilpatrick is still here. We have heard a lot about this phantom “hummer” but everyone is yet to catch a glimpse of it. Congratulations on finally getting your Learners! CPL Collins had the pleasure of marrying the woman of his dreams Lori in October. They are expecting their first child in April 2009 and we all look forward to lots of baby photos. Adam is leaving 1HSB on posting to Randwick to continue playing practical jokes on MAJ Ong. CPL Gurkin has had an eventful year to say the least. She was a member of the ADF Women AFL team. CPL Gurkin is packing up her tools for a posting to Kapooka as a recruit instructor. We wish you all the best. LCPL Broadway elected to do the Dental Hygiene course and we anxiously await her return. PTE Smith married Brenton Audet in May 2008. She has happily handed over the field store accounts to PTE Hosie in preparation for her posting to 3HSB. PTE Jason Wilding joined the 1HSB for 2008 and is leaving us to begin the Technician course in Brisbane. He thinks he is so cool with his new motorbike (but he is still a nerd). PTE Karla Hosie joined us in April and her laughter carries throughout the building and often sets off a chain reaction. PTE Gonja Ozudogru is the newest member and she is eagerly awaiting a posting to “St Kilda Beach Dental”. We are waving goodbye to Amanda Heron and Carmel Greenwood who are leaving us to accompany their families on posting. Overall it’s been a great year, with great people. For all of you that may have heard the horror stories about Holsworthy, they are not all true. As most of the military are moving on there are plenty of positions opening just for you! From all of us at 1HSB we wish you and your families all the best for 2009. Happy soldiering and remember ‘without teeth you would just suck’.
In March, CAPT Olsson-White, SGT Kilpatrick and PTE Audet deployed to East Timor for a month. PTE Broadway and PTE Wilding headed down to CERBERUS to complete the SDA Course. Our civilian staff had a taste for military life, so we arranged for them to participate in the obstacle course at Holsworthy Barracks. Everyone was gung-ho before we began and by the end of the afternoon stretchers were required to carry them out. However, overall it was an enjoyable afternoon and yes Michelle did finally make it over the wall. 76
