the value of community

VOLUNTEERISM OPPORTUNITIES

Through the recent establishment of ADAWA’s own charity, Uniting Smiles, we hope to look after the oral health needs of vulnerable West Australians. Some of the other options for our members to volunteer include: • Healing Smiles: This valuable program provides pro bono treatment (provided by female dentists) to female domestic violence survivors. For details go to healingsmiles.com.au or email healingsmileswa@gmail.com • Rebuilding Smiles: The Rebuilding Smiles program supports those who have experienced domestic and family violence, referred by domestic violence support agencies. The Australian Dental Health Foundation coordinates volunteer dentists to provide pro bono dental treatment for these patients. • Dental Rescue Days: Dental Rescue Days: A practice can allocate a full or half day to treat referred patients. Or you can allocate one chair to treat referred patients - this is a great way to enable you to volunteer while maintaining appointments for regular patients. • Adopt a Patient: Adopt a Patient matches dentists with patients who are in need of complex dental treatment – allowing the patient to have continuity of care. For information on Rebuilding Smiles, Dental Rescue Days and Adopt a Patient, email ADHF WA State Coordinator,

Andrea Paterson, adminwa@adhf.org.au

ADAWA members also have opportunities to volunteer via our affiliated charitable programs. There are so many ways for our members to give back. Go to adawa.com.au/ourassociation/volunteerism for more information.

SUPPORTING STUDENTS

ADAWA supports members from their student days so their transition to practice is smooth. For students, ADAWA provides: • Graduate Guide: ADAWA compiles an online Graduate

Guide for final year DMD4 students. The guide aims to introduce the new graduates to the profession, and is a valuable resource for practices looking to hire a new graduate. • Yearbooks: In collaboration with the final year students, ADAWA produces a keepsake yearbook for the graduating students. • Welcome to the Profession: At the end of each year, ADAWA hosts a dinner, introducing the newly graduated dentists to experienced members of the profession. It is a celebration and a valuable networking opportunity.
