Looking good isn’t just an interest, but a business for Merinda Marcinkowski, who opened Creative Excellence Salon in 2014, after 40+ years working in the salon industry. This salon veteran believes that guests deserve to look their best, and employs outstanding service to ensure that her clients leave with confidence.

How did you get your start? What was the thought or idea behind your business?

The idea behind my business was to be able to give the community a salon that the entire family felt comfortable coming to and that when our guests left the salon, they felt that they were listened to, educated on their services to be able to achieve them at home, looked and felt amazing, and couldn't wait to come back.

What was it like dealing with your first unhappy customer?

Dealing with my first unhappy guest was difficult. I knew I had to make it right. First I had to bring them back into salon and listen to why they are unhappy, clarify what they are saying to me, and talk with them until we get a resolution and a great style. Our guests are our walking, and best, advertisement.

Sylvania Orthodontics knows the importance of a confident smile, and they have been committed to bringing out the best since 1970. Personal attention and high-quality will give you a reason to smile, and the committed orthodontists make sure every client leaves with the best smile of their life.

Are you a first generation business?

First generation as a dentist. I started as a pediatric dentist in 1970 and then went back to graduate school from 1979-1981 to become an orthodontist.

Most memorable moments when interacting with a customer? Seeing the dramatic improvement in people’s smiles!

Why did you choose Toledo as the home for your business?

It had the least number of pediatric dentists in 1970. (in Ohio)

Did you have any doubts about starting up your business? I just did it. There was no choice in my mind.

Bob & Theresa Hoen, owners Hoen’s Garden Center & Landscaping 1710 Perrysburg-Holland Rd., Holland 419-865-6566, hoensgardencenter.com

Since 1980, two generations of the Hoen family have dedicated their work to making your yard look its best. The Garden Center provides you with the literal cream of the crop, offering unique plants and reliable perennials to everyone for Toledo’s green thumbs.

Hoen’s has been around for awhile, who started it and when?

We are a second generation business. In the early 50s, Bob's dad Leo Hoen and his brother Bill bought 100 acres of land. For years they farmed mostly vegetables and fruits to sell for wholesale… particularly tomatoes, for the Heinz company. Bob grew up on the farm, which was mostly to grow tomatoes at the time. Once the first greenhouse was built, people started asking for flowers, so they started growing flats of annuals. Once Bob and I became owners and operators in the early 80s, we had a dream to become a destination Garden Center. We’ve been growing the business with that mind set ever since. CONTINUED ON p.22
