Carvaillé-Coll’s Monumental Organ Project for Saint Peter’s, Rome Bigger Than Them All - By Ronald Ebrecht

978-0-7391-6728-1 $70.00, Cloth Imprint: Lexington Books November 2011 242pp Size: 7 x 10 Category: Music (Musical Instruments / General)

The Book:

Aristide Cavaillé-Coll (1811-1899) is often referred to as the greatest organ builder of all time. The talents required to be such a person range far from music-making to advanced physics, architecture, and engineering. That, plus the knack to raise vast sums of money. This book is the story of the quest to build the largest-ever mechanical-action organ in the biggest church at the time. Cavaillé-Coll’s model for that organ and the book he wrote outlining his proposal are the core of Ebrecht’s discussion. Cavaillé-Coll bestrode a century as well as an art-form. His century complicated the project with the most intricate, intractable problems. Saint-Peter’s Square, now a part of the Vatican City State, was then part of the newly-united Italy, which had just deposed the pope as ruler of the center of Italy and taken the papal lands. The east end of the basilica facing the square and the Tiber became a much disputed boundary. It was a part of the Italian state so hotly contested that the Italian Republicans would not accept the concept of an organ hanged from the basilica wall, lest it shift. Before, or since, has the music sphere ever provoked such a question that could bring nations to swords?

The Author:

Ronald Ebrecht is a professor of music at Wesleyan University.

Arias, Ensembles, & Choruses An Excerpt Finder for Orchestras By John Yaffé and David Daniels 978-0-8108-8166-2 $99.00, Cloth Imprint: The Scarecrow Press December 2011 544pp Size: 8.5 x 11 Series: Music Finders Category: Music (Reference) Includes: Index; Appendix The Book:

Arias, Ensembles, & Choruses is the latest title in Scarecrow’s new Music Finder series, modeled after David Daniels’ Orchestral Music: A Handbook. Conductors John Yaffé and David Daniels have created a one-stop sourcebook for orchestras, opera companies, conductors, and librarians programming vocal excerpts for concert performance. In this book, one finds detailed information on a vast repertoire of vocal excerpts commonly extracted from operas, operettas, musicals, and oratorios — more than 1,500 excerpts from 400 parent works. Information includes basic historical details about the “parent work” as well as extract titles, subtitles, voice types, keys, durations, locations in the original work (with page numbers in both full scores and piano-vocal scores), and exact instrumentation. One especially valuable aspect of this book is the listing of sources: the publishers that make available the orchestral materials for just the excerpt being programmed, independent of the full parent work. Until now, conductors and orchestra librarians commonly had to first leaf through full scores, searching for one elusive three-minute aria after another, only to then consult multiple publishers’ catalogues to compile crucial, and often decisive, information on all the excerpts proposed for a concert or recording. This book provides a single source in which to find that information. In many cases, the individual entries also include valuable insider information on common performance practice, including start- and stop-points, transpositions, and conventional cuts. Searching for repertoire is made easy with the detailed Title Index and appendixes devoted to ensemble excerpts, categorized by personnel (e.g., duets, trios, quartets, quintets, sextets, choruses) and by language. This book is the ideal tool for the working conductor and orchestral librarian, as well as music program directors at colleges and conservatories, opera companies and philharmonics. The Authors: David Daniels is Music Director of the Warren Symphony and the author of Orchestral Music: A Handbook (Scarecrow, 2005), now in its 4th edition. John Yaffé is an internationally active conductor of opera and symphonic works. He trained in Los Angles, New York, and Italy; spent 10 years as a coach and conductor in several European opera houses; and has gone on to lead operatic and orchestral performances throughout the U.S. and in both Western and Eastern Europe.

At the Piano

Conversations with 21st-Century Pianists -By Caroline Benser

978-0-8108-8172-3 $49.95, Cloth Imprint: The Scarecrow Press December 2011 176pp Size: 6 X 9 Category: Music (Biography Includes: Index; 8 Illustrations (Photos)

The Book: In At the Piano, Caroline Benser explores the kaleidoscopic world of 21st-century pianism through a series of extended interviews with eight major pianists: Leif Ove Andsnes, Jonathan Biss, Simone Dinnerstein, Marc-André Hamelin, Stephen Hough, Steven Osborne, Yevgeny Sudbin, and Yuja Wang. Each pianist was chosen because he represents not only the virtuoso pianist playing the classics from Bach, Beethoven, Liszt, Debussy, and Bartók, but also because he is dedicated to commissioning and performing today’s living composers and because he is interested in those musical skills that were neglected in the past. Interviewees talk about such topics as their earliest experiences at the piano, the crucial importance of their earliest teachers, the literature they play, the instruments they prefer, what it means to be a musician, and the joys and difficulties of a professional career doing what they love. Teachers, students, and amateur pianists alike will learn about new and obscure literature for the instrument; newly developed instruments that extend the range of the keyboard; the phenomenal rise of Chinese pianists; and new research on pianists’ injuries and healthy playing. At the Piano is written not only for the specialist and non-specialist pianist but also for all musicians and general music lovers. The Author: Caroline Benser is Recording Review Editor at American Music and a private piano teacher. She is the coauthor of Randall Thompson: A Bio-Bibliography (1991) and the author of Egon Wellesz: A Chronicle of a Twentieth-Century Musician (1985).

The Book:

Exploring U2 features new writing in the growing field of U2 studies. This book contains selections from the 2009 inaugural gathering of “The Hype and The Feedback: A Conference Exploring The Music, Work and Influence of U2.” In keeping with U2’s own efforts to remove barriers that have long prevented dialogue for understanding and improving the human experience, this collection of essays examines U2 from perspectives ranging from the personal to the academic and is accessible to curious music fans, students, teachers, and scholars alike. Four sections organize sixteen essays from leading academics, music critics, clergy, and fans. From the academic disciplines of literature, music, philosophy and theology, essays study U2’s evolving use of source material in live performances, the layering of vocal effects in signature songs, the crafting of a spiritual community at live concerts, U2’s success as a business brand, Bono’s rhetorical presentation of Africa to the Western consumer, and readings of U2’s work for irony, personhood, hope, conservatism, and cosmic-time. Official band biographer Neil McCormick considers U2 as a Dublin-shaped band, and Danielle Rhéaume tells how discovering and returning Bono’s lost briefcase of lyrics for the album October propelled her along her own artistic journey. This thoughtful and timely collection recognizes U2’s music both as art and commentary on personal journeys and cultural dialogues about contemporary issues. It offers insights and critical assessments that will appeal not only to scholars and students of popular music and culture studies, but to those in the fields of theology, philosophy, the performing arts, literature, and all intellectually curious fans of U2.

Hans Von Bülow’s Letters to Johannes Brahms A Research Edition

By Hans-Joachim Hinrichsen Translated by Cynthia Klohr 978-0-8108-8215-7 $75.00, Cloth Imprint: The Scarecrow Press November 2011 176pp Size: 6 x 9 Category: Music (Biography) Includes: Index

The Book:

Hans Von Bülow (1830-1894) is a towering figure of late 19th-century music. In his early years, he was crucial to championing Franz Liszt’s instrumental works. He would also conduct the premières of Richard Wagner’s musical dramas Tristan and Isolde and The Mastersingers and become the first to perform all five of Ludwig Van Beethoven’s late piano sonatas in one recital. In 1869, after breaking away from Wagner, Bülow became one of the most important proponents of orchestral works by Johannes Brahms, whom he had known personally for decades. Hans von Bülow’s Letters to Johannes Brahms, originally published in German in 1994, covers the correspondence between Hans von Bülow and Brahms from 1877 to 1892, with Brahms’s replies, where obtainable, included in the commentary. In addition to selected facsimiles of letters, postcards, and concert programs, this research edition of the correspondence of these two giants of classical music includes a thorough commentary explaining individuals, events, and issues discussed in the letters. Authoritatively researched, Hinrichsen’s edition of these letters, artfully translated by Cynthia Klohr, brings to life the world of music that Brahms and Bülow inhabited. As the first complete English rendition of all extant letters written by Bülow to Brahms, Hans von Bülow’s Letters to Johannes Brahms is a formidable collection of primary sources, offering critical insights into one of the key relationships in the history of 19th-century classical music. Musicians, musicologists, and historians will all find this book to be a fascinating read.

The Authors:

Hans-Joachim Hinrichsen became professor of musicology at the University of Zurich in 1999 after studying and teaching at Berlin’s Freie Universität. He is co-editor of the journals Archiv für Musikwissenschaft (Archive for Musicology) and Schubert: Perspektiven (Schubert Perspectives). He is also a member of the Academia Europaea and the Austrian Academy of the Sciences. Translator Cynthia Klohr, PhD, teaches philosophy at universities in Karlsruhe, Germany. She has translated several books and essays in philosophy, psychology, the theory and history of science, and music.

What Makes Music European -By Marcello Sorce Keller

978-0-8108-7671-2 $80.00, Cloth Imprint: The Scarecrow Press November 2011 336pp Size: 6 x 9 Series: Europea: Ethnomusicologies and Modernities Category: Ethnomusicology (Music History and Appreciation) Includes: Index

The Book:

We are seldom fully aware of how much we take for granted in the current definition of music and how intriguing it may appear from the standpoint of other cultures. In What Makes Music European , Marcello Sorce Keller examines the limitations of accepted wisdom about the concept of music in Euro-Western culture from different angles. He investigates conclusions from the music research of the past several decades that considerably upsets the concepts relied upon by the concert-going public, asking the questions: Who makes the music? Should music be original, and how much can it be? Why do people identify with songs, pieces, styles, and repertoire? Why is music so ideological? Why do we misunderstand the music of different times and places, and why do we enjoy doing so? He also explores the juxtaposition of economy, society, and music making, as well as the concept of “Illegal Harmonies.” This work deals with issues that are seldom discussed yet are essential to an understanding of how music intertwines with the life of so many people. An introduction and conclusion reveal how complementary the chapters are to one another and how they provide an approach to thinking about music that rests just as much on its history as it does on concepts and attitudes developed by social sciences. What Makes Music European concisely demonstrates, to those familiar with Western music, how peculiar Euro-Western concepts of music may appear in a cross-cultural perspective. At the same time, it stimulates ethnomusicologists to apply their knowledge to Western music and explain to its public that much of what is usually taken for granted about it is, at the very least, highly debatable.

The Author:

Marcello Sorce Keller is Honorary Fellow of the University of Malta and board member of its Mediterranean Institute. He is the author and producer of “Note in libertà,” a radio program on Swiss Italian Radio.

Zbigniew Preisner’s Three Colors Trilogy: Blue, White, Red A Film Score Guide Nicholas W. Reyland

978-0-8108-8138-9 $55.00, Paper Imprint: The Scarecrow Press November 2011 472pp Size: 5.5 X 8.5 Series: Scarecrow Film Score Guides Category: Film (Music)

The Book:

Director Krzysztof Kieslowski’s Three Colors trilogy - Blue (1993), White (1993), and Red (1994) - is one of the great achievements of European film. A meditation on liberty, equality, and fraternity, these three films marked the culmination of the director’s career as well as the zenith of one of the most important creative collaborations in 20th-century cinema – between Kieslowski, scriptwriter Krzysztof Piesiewicz, and composer Zbigniew Preisner. Thanks to their close working relationship, music for the Three Colors trilogy achieves both a focal narrative and philosophical function. At times, Preisner’s music advances the narrative independently of the films’ other codes; at other times, it creates a metaphorical space into which the audience is invited, in order to read for “deeper” messages. As the first major scholarly treatment of Preisner’s music, this book fills an important void in film score scholarship. In this guide, Reyland analyzes the historical context of the film scores, the life of the composer, the hermeneutic and narrative role of the music within the film, and the musical scoring techniques used for the trilogy. This volume also draws on interplay of established “classic” approaches to analyzing film music and more recent approaches in the exploration of its themes and readings. In addition, the composer’s willingness to be interviewed by Reyland enhances the musicological scholarship of this book, giving the reader privileged access into the process of scoring. A significant contribution to film studies and musicological literature, this book celebrates one of the great cinematic achievements of the last few decades.

The Author:

Dr Nicholas Reyland is lecturer at Keele University, where he teaches for the Music, MCC, and Film Studies programs. He has written articles on Lutoslawski and narrativity in Music & Letters, Music Analysis, and Witold Lutoslawski Studies.

The Ballad Collectors of North America How Gathering Folksongs Transformed Academic Thought and American Identity Edited by Scott B. Spencer

978-0-8108-8155-6 $65.00, Cloth Imprint: The Scarecrow Press December 2011 272pp Size: 5.5 X 8.5 Series: American Folk Music and Musicians Series Category: Music (American History) Includes: Index

The Book:

Much has been written about the songs gathered in North America in the first half of the 20th century. However, there is scant information on those individuals responsible for gathering these songs. The Ballad Collectors of North America fills this gap, documenting the efforts of those who transcribed and recorded North American folk songs. Both biographical and topical, this book chronicles not only the most influential of these “song catchers” but investigates the leading schools of thought regarding the collection process, the leading proponents of those schools, and the projects shaped by them. Contributors consider as well the role of technology-especially the phonograph-in the collection efforts and the impact of that technology. Several chapters organized by region cover such areas as Appalachia, the West, and Canada, while others are devoted to specialized topics, such as cowboy song, occupational song, and commercialization of song through collections and anthologies. The book investigates the larger role of ballads in the development of American identity, from the national appreciation of cowboy songs in popular culture to the use of Appalachian song forms in radio broadcasts to the role of dustbowl ballads in the urban folk revival. Finally, this collection of essays assesses the changing role of songs and song texts in the academic fields of folklore, anthropology, musicology, and ethnomusicology. Scholars and students of American cultural and social history, as well as fans of North American folk music and popular music, will find in The Ballad Collectors of North America a fascinating story of how the American folk tradition gained greater visibility, fueling the revolutions that would follow in writing and performance of American music.

The Author:

Scott Spencer has published widely on the intersections of oral cultures, new technologies, and expression of cultural identity. He received a doctorate in ethnomusicology from New York University for his project on aspects of traditional Irish music in today’s media age.

The Past is Always Present

The Revival of the Byzantine Musical Tradition at Mount Athos -By Tore Tvarnø Lind

978-0-8108-8147-1 $85.00, Cloth w/ Audio CD Imprint: The Scarecrow Press December 2011 224pp Size: 6 X 9 Series: Europea: Ethnomusicologies and Modernities Category: Ethnomusicology (Religion) Includes: Index; 37 Illustrations (22 Line Art, 15 Photos)

The Book:

In The Past Is Always Present, Tore Tvarnø Lind examines the musical revival of Greek Orthodox chant at the monastery of Vatopaidi within the monastic society of Mount Athos, Greece. In particular, Lind focuses on the musical activities at the monastery and the meaning of the past in the monks’ efforts at improving their musical performance practice through an emphasis on tradition. Based on a decade of intense fieldwork and extensive interviews with members of Athos’ monastic community, Lind covers a vast array of topics. From musical notation and the Greek oral tradition to CD covers and music production, the tension between tradition and modernity in the musical activity of the Athonite community raises a clear challenge to the quest to bring together Orthodox spirituality and quietude with musical production. The Past Is Always Present addresses all of these matters by focusing on the significance and meaning of the local chanting style. As Lind argues, Byzantine chant cannot be fully grasped in musicological terms alone, outside the context of prayer. Yet because chant is fundamentally a way of communicating with God, the sound generated must be exactly right, pushing issues of music notation, theory, and performance practice to the forefront. Byzantine chant, Lind ultimately argues, is a modern phenomenon as the monastic communities of Mount Athos negotiate with the realities of modern Orthodox identity in Greece. By reporting on the musical revival activities of this remarkable community through the topics of notation, musical theory, drone-singing, and spiritual silence, Lind looks at the ways in which Athonite heritage is shaped, touching upon the Byzantine chant’s contemporary relationship with practice of pilgrimage and the phenomenon of religious tourism. Offering unique insights into the monastic culture at Mount Athos, The Past Is Always Present is for those especially interested in sacred music, past and present Greek culture, monastic life, religious tourism, and the fields of ethnomusicology and anthropology.

The Author:

Tore Tvarnø Lind is a Danish ethnomusicologist. He has done fieldwork at Mount Athos on Orthodox chant and in Copenhagen on heterodox healing practices with music.

César Franck

His Life and Times By R. J. Stove

978-0-8108-8207-2 $39.95, Cloth Imprint: The Scarecrow Press November 2011 368pp Size: 6 x 9 Category: Music (Biography) Includes: Index; 53 Illustrations (43 line art, 10 photos)

The Book: César Franck (1822-1890), Belgian-born and French-domiciled, was one of the most remarkable composers of the 19th century. A number of his works are commonly recorded, such as his Symphony in D Minor, Symphonic Variations, Violin Sonata, and ever-popular Panis Angelicus, and yet 38 years have elapsed since a biography of him last appeared in English. Now, with César Franck, R. J. Stove fills this critical gap in the history of late 19th-century classical music with a full-length study of the man and his music. This book draws on numerous sources never before cited in English, painting a picture of a great musician and deeply loved man, whose influence in both his native and adopted lands was exceptional. Stove carefully delves into intimate matters of Franck’s life, such as his resilience in the face of his exploitation as a child-prodigy at the piano; his development from a shy and harassed piano teacher into one of the most sought-after Conservatoire luminaries France has ever harbored; and the truth behind Franck’s alleged affair with one of his students. Throughout his study, Stove interweaves panoramic surveys of the political and social atmosphere of Belgium and France, contextualizing Franck’s achievements in his historical milieu, from his rise as a recognized master of the organ to his dealings with significant composers such as Liszt, Gounod, SaintSaëns, Massenet, Chabrier, and others. César Franck is an engagingly written biography sure to interest classical music listeners of all stripes. The Author: R. J. Stove is an organist and writer about music who, in the former capacity, has publicly performed several of César Franck’s organ pieces. His articles on musical topics have appeared in Modern Age, The University Bookman, The New Criterion, Organ Australia, Britain’s Musical Times, and other periodicals. His books include A Student’s Guide to Music History (2007), The Unsleeping Eye (2003), and Prince of Music (1990).

Art for Church

The Book: The Church needs the arts, as they are a way to access the soul. Recent popes have given the impression that the Church is again interested in the way the arts draw us into ourselves, where we are able to contact the mystery that is God. Art for Church is a personal and professional expression of how that renewed interest plays itself out. In this book, McNally offers insights on how much freedom is necessary for art to flourish in the service of the Church and just what is at stake if that freedom is curtailed. Art for Church contains over 120 original paintings and 30 original poems by the author. The Author: Dennis McNally has dedicated his life to art as a way of finding God. He has painted about his own experiences in relationship to God for fifty years. This journey has led to hundreds of large works about the quest for God, his own questions about the Church, and the quagmire of living with others. He has worked as a priest and educator for forty-five years.
