EA Lxtraordinary EXANDRIA JUST FIVE MILES FROM WASHINGTON, DC, FIND AN ENCHANTING WATERFRONT DESTINATION THAT SEAMLESSLY BLENDS TREND AND TRADITION.

Heralded as both a desirable address for DC influencers and a top getaway for visitors, the City of Alexandria offers cosmopolitan arts, culture, shopping and dining in an intimate historic setting. Day and night Old Town Alexandria bustles with life, as locals and travelers wander streets lined with romantic sidewalk cafés, stylish boutiques and treasure-filled galleries. Walkable and welcoming, this compact city is also easily navigable by bike or the free King Street Trolley. Miles of trails wind through riverside parks, providing picturesque views along routes to some of the country’s most intriguing historic sites. 10

O F FI C I AL V I SI TO RS G UIDE TO AL E XANDRIA, VIRG INIA Explore four neighborhoods, each with its own style and character. Old Town, the 18th- and 19thcentury heart of the city, is home to chef-driven restaurants, luxurious hotels, chic boutiques and the renowned Torpedo Factory Art Center. Del Ray means made-for-strolling blocks dotted with family-friendly eateries and gourmet cheese and chocolate shops. West End represents an eclectic mix of old and new, from the Fort Ward Museum & Historic Site and the 44-acre Winkler Botanical Preserve to CBS-lauded Port City Brewing Company. In Carlyle/Eisenhower, visitors find inspiration at the National Inventors Hall of Fame & Museum, hit the water slides and mini golf at Cameron Run Regional Park and enjoy 1930s-style dinner and dancing at The Carlyle Club.

PALATE PLEASING

Highly touted chefs and restaurateurs flock to Alexandria’s buzz-worthy dining scene where presidents since George Washington have made reservations, and modern foodies now follow suit. President Obama and the first family have celebrated special occasions like anniversaries, Father’s Day and birthdays in Alexandria. And on any given night, politicos, diplomats and celebrities indulge at some of the area’s “100 Very Best Restaurants” (Washingtonian). One of these is Food & Winelauded Restaurant Eve, where chef Cathal Armstrong whips up dazzling menus, often with ingredients from his on-site garden. A champion of Alexandria’s dining scene, Armstrong has spread his culinary mastery across the city: The Majestic for upscale American comfort food, Eamonn’s a Dublin Chipper for his native Irish fish and chips and Society Fair, a “boutique emporium of epicurean delight” featuring a wine bar, demo kitchen, butchery, bakery and market. Armstrong partner and “liquid savant” Todd Thrasher masterminds

cocktails at swank speakeasy PX, named one of GQ’s “top 25 bars.” Beer aficionados head to Bill Butcher’s Port City Brewing Company for tastes and tours. The first brewery in Alexandria since Prohibition, Port City concocts standard, seasonal and limited edition batches like Revival Stout, given a subtle briny flavor thanks to the addition of local oysters during the brewing process. Fresh seafood factors in chowders and steamers from Hank’s Oyster Bar and traditional Chesapeake dishes from The Wharf. Delicious fare and friendly service come also from casual local favorites like Teaism and Fontaine Caffe & Creperie. With a larger group in tow, consider barbeque at King Street Blues, creative American dishes at Virtue Feed & Grain, Italian meals at Landini Brothers and French fare at Del Ray Café. The new Waterfront Market offers grab-and-go meals from sandwiches to sushi plus a café with riverside seating.

IMAGINATIVE

One of America’s Top ArtPlaces 2013, Alexandria is recognized as a community “with a backbone of creative culture.” So it’s no surprise that this fertile ground claims a variety of venues Bishop Boutique catering to the arts. Galleries lure visitors off the street with captivating shows and exhibitions, but it’s certainly the acclaimed Torpedo Factory Art Center that anchors the city’s visual arts scene. Built in 1918 as a munitions factory, the free-to-visit site today hosts 82 artists’ studios, six galleries, the headquarters of The Art League School and the Alexandria Archaeology Museum. Explore the studios, open daily, to catch glimpses of sculptors, painters, welders and ceramicists at work. A magnificent classical revival building on cobblestoned “Captain’s Row,” the Athenaeum

Nearly a century after its opening, the Old Town Theater continues to delight audiences with a full calendar of comedy, music, magic and dance nodding to its vaudeville past. Patrons also flock to MetroStage for “Off-Broadway on the River’s Edge” and to the Little Theatre of

Alexandria, the area’s oldest continuously operating community stage, for musicals, comedies and dramas.

Classic and Chic

Alexandria has been a shopping destination since the 1700s, when the port city served as a commercial hub for the region. Today boutique seekers, antiques lovers and fashion hounds stroll the King Street corridor for “some of the best stores and galleries in the [DC] region” (Wall Street Journal). Count on big names like H&M, Banana Republic, White House/Black Market and Anthropologie in addition to local gems. The Old Town Boutique District comprises dozens of independent retailers that welcome shoppers with unique collections, friendly service and wellhoned expertise. Fashionistas find looks by Tory Burch and Kate Spade at The Shoe Hive, ontrend bags and accessories at Bishop Boutique and flirty finery by Rebecca Taylor, Chan Luu and Velvet at Zoe Boutique. For funky wear—think costume jewelry, colorful scarves and patterned dresses—style mavens head to The Lucky Knot. Bargain hunters make the rounds at national chain outlets operated by Crate & Barrel, Nine West and Gap.

Home décor shops forego cookiecutter design and instead showcase the city’s long tradition of craftsmanship. Browse Red Barn Mercantile for antique textiles, picture frames and furniture or The Hour Cocktail Collection for vintage barware. BW Art, Antiques and Collectibles offers three floors of estate jewelry, china and curios in an 1880s row house, and Studio Antiques & Fine Art specializes in English and early American furniture. Looking for more artful purchases? St. George Gallery, selling handwoven textiles, paintings and crafts from Ethiopia, names the Clintons and Madeleine Albright among its clientele. At Gallery Lafayette, Virginia native Todd Healy displays his watercolors, finely detailed scenes of his beloved “muse”— the City of Alexandria, its buildings, spaces and history. Gourmet treats await at Society Fair, Cheesetique and Artfully Chocolate— shops offering house-made tastes to enjoy on-site or have packaged for a picnic by the water. Talk about tradition: Saturdays on King Street mean the Old Town Farmers Market, where for centuries vendors have gathered to sell vegetables and flowers, arts and crafts. According to local lore, even George Washington sent produce here from his Mount Vernon estate.

Robert E. Lee’s family lived, Freedman’s Cemetery and Alexandria National Cemetery, which holds the graves of more than 4,000 soldiers. The Alexandria Black History Museum showcases photos, artifacts and memorabilia that Artfully Chocolate

document African-American life from the Civil War to Civil Rights. Another intimate historic site, the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum has preserved a longtime family business (1792-1933) in time-capsule style with

original tonics and glass bottles lining the wooden shelves.

Well-Connected

Alexandria seems a world away, but it’s remarkably accessible. Minutes from Reagan National Airport, the city claims an Amtrak station, four Metrorail stops and Potomac Riverboat Company’s water taxi service from National Harbor and Georgetown. Major roads and bike paths lead to the city, where eight Capital Bikeshare stations provide shiny red cycles. The free (and low-emission) King Street Trolley runs day and night along the main drag making 20 stops. Exceptional touring experiences make exploration easy. Costumed guides reveal the stories behind the sites—and search for “ghosts”—during walks in Old Town. Potomac Riverboat Company cruises provide panoramic views of the country’s most famed monuments— stately by day, illuminated by night— and shuttle passengers to George Washington’s Mount Vernon. Bike & Roll offers Mount Vernon visits by bicycle or boat, while DC Metro Food Tours deliver a true “taste” of the city. Opportunities for discovery arise at every turn, and thanks to celebrity chefs, stylish boutiques and artistic flair, this nearly 300-year-old city continues to make history.

Storied

Founded by Scottish merchants in 1749, Alexandria became a vital seaport during colonial times—not to mention George Washington’s beloved adopted hometown. Throughout the Civil War, the city was essential to the Union’s efforts (and was the longest-occupied territory), serving as a haven for African-American refugees. For those seeking to uncover the region’s rich past, there’s no shortage of attractions significant to American politics and lore. Colonial-history buffs see meticulously restored structures and period reenactments at George Washington’s Mount Vernon, mansionturned-British-army-headquarters Carlyle House and Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, a favorite haunt of the founding fathers. Some of the best-preserved Civil War sites are also here: Fort Ward Museum & Historic Site, the Lee-Fendall House Museum & Garden, where generations of

ALEXANDRIA

Uncover the city’s colorful past by treading the same cobblestoned paths as did citizens centuries ago.

Boston and Williamsburg, the tavern became an important political and social center, whose notable patrons included George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Robert E. Lee. ■ Walk up Cameron Street to George Washington’s Townhouse , 508 Cameron Street. This structure recreates a modest 18th-century dwelling originally built in 1769 by Washington to provide convenient quarters when business or inclement weather prevented his return to Mount Vernon. ■ Continue on Cameron, and cross over N. Washington Street. Christ Church , 118 N. Washington Street, was built in 1773 and is an excellent example of a small rectangular Georgian church. The three-story tower with belfry topped by a cupola was completed in 1818. George Washington played a part in building the church and was an original pewholder (number 60). Robert E. Lee was also a member of the congregation. ■ Turn left on N. Washington Street toward King Street, which turns into S. Washington. The Lyceum, Alexandria’s History Museum sits at 201 S. Washington Street. Since its beginnings in 1839, the building has been used as a Civil War hospital, a private home, an office building and the nation’s first Bicentennial Center. Today, the Lyceum displays exhibits on Alexandria’s story through more than 1,500 historical objects.

The Lyceum, Alexandria’s History Museum BEGIN YOUR TOUR at the Alexandria Visitors Center at Ramsay House , 221 King Street at the corner of Fairfax Street, a recreation of the circa 1724 home of Scottish merchant and Alexandria co-founder William Ramsay. ■ Walk two blocks east on King Street toward the Potomac River to Union Street. Turn right onto Union and right onto Prince. Welcome to Captain’s Row, one of Alexandria’s oldest and most picturesque blocks with authentic cobblestones. Sea captains or ship masters built many of these Federal houses at a time when Alexandria rivaled New York and Boston as a port of entry. ■ Continue up Prince Street to the 200 block, known as Gentry Row . On the corner of Prince and Lee lies the Athenaeum . Built in 1851, this antebellum Greek Revival building originally housed the Bank of the Old Dominion. Today, the Athenaeum is an art gallery and the home of the Northern Virginia Fine Arts Association. ■ Turn right on S. Fairfax Street. Find the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum , 105-107 S. Fairfax Street, where Edward Stabler began his pharmacy business in 1792, serving customers like Martha Washington and Robert E. Lee. The family business operated continuously until

16

VisitAlexandriaVA.com

1933 when the Depression forced its closure. Today, the museum exhibits herbal botanicals and medical equipment, much preserved in its original form. ■ Turn left onto King Street and right into Market Square. City Hall , 301 King Street, is home to Alexandria’s city government. Its structure was built in 1871 as a courthouse, atop a site first used as a market space frequented by George Washington. Today, its steeple tower is a landmark on the Alexandria horizon, and the Farmers Market tradition continues each Saturday throughout the year. ■ Return to Fairfax Street, and turn left. Carlyle House , 121 N. Fairfax Street, was built in 1752 by wealthy Scottish merchant and city cofounder John Carlyle. This handsome stone mansion is an outstanding example of Colonial Georgian architecture. ■ Turn left onto Cameron Street, and walk one block to Gadsby’s Tavern Museum , 134 N. Royal Street. Businessman John Wise built this twobuilding complex: the 1785 Georgian-style City Tavern and the 1792 Federal-style City Hotel famous for its great ballroom. Ideally situated on the main stage coach route between

■ Turn left on Prince Street, then right on S. Alfred Street. Friendship Firehouse , 107 S. Alfred Street, built in 1855, is the headquarters of the Friendship Fire Company, Alexandria’s first volunteer firefighting squad. The stories of those who protected Alexandria’s citizens from fire—an overwhelming concern in the days of mostly wooden buildings—are preserved in the Friendship Firehouse Museum.

Alexandria is the base for chef Cathal Armstrong’s

establishments, including Restaurant Eve, where culinary craftsmanship becomes an art form. Majestic Lounge at Evening Star Café

NEIGHBORHOOD SPOTLIGHT: DEL RAY Northwest of Old Town lies a colorful zone with an independent spirit. Along Del Ray’s made-for-strolling Mount Vernon Avenue, eateries range from family-friendly pizzerias and barbeque restaurants to sophisticated spots devoted to cheese and gourmet chocolate confections. Instead of big-box names, there’s a neighborhood pharmacy and an old-fashioned variety store. When customers wander into boutiques for fashion, crafts or children’s goods, it’s

often the owner who greets them. And each Saturday of the year, visitors and residents alike peruse the Del Ray Farmers Market, picking fresh and local produce from the growers themselves. On the north side of Del Ray, the up-and-coming area of Arlandria has small shops and restaurants with an international flavor. Locals call the zone “Chirilagua” for the El Salvadoran village from which many of the residents emigrated. Also here, the Birchmere Music Hall has been booking the finest acts in blues, R&B and rock for more than 50 years. Del Ray’s signature events contribute to the neighborhood’s artsy ambience. Residents with dogs and strollers promenade along the main drag to celebrate the first Thursday of each month, May through September, with music, entertainment and dining specials.

Neighborhood Spotlight: West End

Visitors venture west for modern innovation with a splash of creativity.

In the Carlyle neighborhood, flanked by Eisenhower Valley, find the United States Patent & Trademark Office, which holds the National Inventors Hall of Fame & Museum. Interactive exhibits invite the curious to learn about innovations like the ballpoint pen and the radio. The National Science Foundation, a champion of advancement, will soon call this neighborhood home. Also here: The Carlyle Club, a posh Art Deco-inspired supper club, plus new hotels, cafés, a cinema, retail shops and condominiums. Farther west, the rapidly growing West End has origins that trace back to the village of Cameron, which pre-dated Alexandria. By the Civil War, the area had taken on strategic importance for the Union. Today the West End bustles with lively restaurants and attractions like Fort Ward Museum & Historic Site, the bestpreserved example of the Civil War-era defenses of Washington. Visitors also find Northern Virginia’s only free skateboard park and Nick’s Nightclub, where “the twostepping crowd heads to get its honkytonk fix” (Washington Post).
