B

oredom in the classroom, attention deficit, learning difficulties
These increasingly common phenomena are an indicator that primary school teaching needs to be overhauled to accommodate every type of intelligence and the new behaviours of today’s children. Contrary to the stereotypes associated with the “connected” generation, the young are more politicised and aware of the challenges of the contemporary world than their elders. This certainty is a guiding principle in Philippe Viard’s professional life. A head teacher as well as a sportsman and musician, he has been working with children ever since he was a teenager himself. Drawing on his personal experience, this guide places an emphasis on creativity as a means of transforming the classroom environment and promoting the personal development of every child. Based on the five pillars of the national curriculum, the tools that the author recommends reflect how much freedom we have to teach differently.

Ivan Loncle is a graphic designer and illustrator based in Nantes. He designs graphic layouts for companies, freelancers and associations. As a trainer, he teaches visual identity classes at Brassart school in Nantes and runs graphic design workshops alongside personal writing and illustration projects.

71 - society > je passe à l’acte

Today’s schools should be the driver behind a genuine educative community that is open to parents and local stakeholders and anchored in the environment and daily lives of the pupils. This guide is gold mine of advice on how to build that community, suggesting innovative classroom tools for teachers and new ways for parents to become involved in the schooling of their children.
