About Me I am a graduate student at the University of Georgia pursuing a Master’s in landscape architecture. For undergrad, I majored in Environmental Studies with an emphasis in Geography. During my time completing that degree, I studied geological processes in depth, which allowed me to explore the very core of landscapes and the processes that help shape them. My love for natural landscapes is directly and indirectly evident in the following works.

TUNNEL This project was designed in three parts from the inside out. A foundation, walls, and roof characterize the space. Don’t be fooled by the unprovocative exterior; this tunnel is defined by its intriguing interior mass. Its undulating vertical structure is inspired by Antelope Canyon.

CLIFFS Petros Plaza derives its name from the design’s inspiration-- petrochelidon pyrrhonota, the american cliff swallow. The birds travel to mud sources, gather the mud into their beaks, and bring the pellets back to the nest, where they lay the pellets like bricks, one on top of another until the nest is finished. The nests are shaped like gourds, with small, narrow entrances that provide protection from predators.

The design for this plaza seeks to emulate the roundness and roughness of the nest’s physical form, as well as privacy that the space provides to those within.

VINEYARD This design for a landscape in North Georgia creates a link between the Winery on the east side of the property with a recently established Bed and Breakfast on the west side of the property. In addition to creating a connection between these two uses, event spaces and wedding area were proposed.

CHICOPEE MEMORIAL GARDEN Chicopee Memorial Garden is one of Chicopee Mill Village’s most significant spaces, as it seeks to commemmorate the village residents that sustain the Chicopee community. Visitors of Chicopee Memorial Garden can pass through at a leisurely rate, observing the native plant collection of Chicopee’s vibrant garden. Visitors may choose to sit and stay awhile. From the road, the garden beckons to anyone who appreciates wildflowers and natives.

Though the area is not fenced, dense shrubs and grasses serve as a defining boundary of the park. At the Second Street entrance, a sign welcomes visitors to the garden and provides a brief history of the mill town and historical figures involved. The names of Chicopee community members are enscribed on the brick walk that winds through the garden.

PROCESS DIAGRAMS

CIRCULATION The diagram on the left displays the design for circulation, which makes use of the curvilinear vocabulary as the garden is to be enjoyed at a leisurely rate. The garden can be accessed from multiple points, including two streets and an outdoor patio.

PLANT MASSING Plant massing is widely used by designers, as this option can achieve multiple objectives, including aesthetic and ecological goals. For example, massed native grasses can provide a dense nesting cover for birds or small mammals. Massing one plant can achieve stunning visual impact as the color, height, and texture of that plant is emphasized at a greater scale.

RESIDENTIAL DESIGN This residence afforded a blank slate in which to design. In this design, trees and plants take root and define a once desolate landscape. A proposed driveway limits traffic in the yard so as to reduce exessive damage to grass. Areas of sod and mulch also help to define the front yard and separate personal property from public street.

A slate stepping stone pathway leads from the driveway to the front porch. Erosion had been occurring at a slow rate in an area behind the client’s backporch, so shrubs and a retaining wall were proposed to slow run off.

GREENSPACE PLANNING While interning with the AthensClarke County Sustainability Office, I mapped the green spaces througout the county as perpetually protected or unlikely to change according to their associated deeds. Mapped green spaces inform planners on issues of green space use, functionality, and connectivity.

The design on the following page is a “full build out scenario for an acquired green space. The main purpose of the parcel acquisition was to extend the greenway trail, but we wanted to consider what the property would look like with other uses included (see design elements).

LEGION FIELD While interning with University Architects, I reimagined an underutilized green space at the heart of the University’s student housing community. Currently, the field is fenced off from public access and a thick wall of invasive plants follows alongside the fence. Extensive parking surrounds the site. The proposed design suggests that the space is opened to the public so that students can use it on a daily basis.

In this design, the field keeps with tradition in providing a space for shows and events, but also becomes a central outdoor space that can be enjoyed daily by the 4,000+ students living right by the field. The housing community would undoubtedly benefit from an easily accessible green space at its center.

The outdoor amphitheater design was inspired by the topography of the site, as well as by images of an amphitheater found on Swarthmore’s campus (right). The design is appropriate for a field in which events and concerts are held; the audience now has a place to sit.
