Mainstreet Bakery brings a Backstreet Kitchen to Eden Prairie BY PAUL GROESSEL SUN NEWSPAPERS It’s an independentlyowned restaurant, gets its bread from the owner’s popular bakery and has a comfortable atmosphere, even if it is in the middle of Eden Prairie’s business district. “We’re kind of like a neighborhood joint without the neighborhood,” said Backstreet Kitchen owner and Eden Prairie resident Tony Sisinni. Sisinni also owns Mainstreet Bakery, which mass produces various goods to approximately 250 local customers and “thousands” nationwide, Sisinni said. Clients include Kowalski’s Market and Universal Studios in Orlando, Fla.

(Photo by Paul Groessel • Sun Newspapers) His new restaurant and catering service is just a few blocks down from the bakery. When Sisinni found out the space became available, he

saw an opportunity and started the kitchen, he said. The grand opening was July 28, he said, and since then the place has been busy.

It was packed during a recent Thursday BBQ lunch special. Every Thursday, BACKSTREET: TO PAGE 2

Baker Road ‘complete street’ plan nixed EP School Board BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS The Baker Road lane reconfiguration plan has been nixed, given its unpopularity based on some resident feedback. With Hennepin County planning to mill and overlay the road in early September, the city thought it would be a good time to consider turning it into a more pedestrianfriendly roadway. Eden Prairie Public Works Director Robert Ellis informed the city council of the staff ’s decision during a meeting Aug. 16. City staff and the county considered two options: keep the roadway the same or convert it from the current four-lane road into a three-lane road with a center turn lane and shoulders wide enough for biking. The change would have stretched from County Road 62 to St. Andrew Drive. The idea was to create more of a “complete street,” accommodating pedestrian and vehicle use, an option the city would like to keep in mind for future street projects, said

City Manager Rick Getschow and Mayor Nancy Tyra-Lukens. Well, for Baker Road, some people didn’t like the idea of losing a traffic lane. The city held a public forum Aug. 4, so citizens could learn about the proposed lane change and provide feedback. Between that meeting and other resident responses, the city received 70 comments, Ellis said. “The overwhelming majority were against [it],” Ellis told the city council. He said 71 percent were opposed and as much as 18 percent in favor of the project, and the rest were neutral. Many people talked about the difficulty of getting onto Baker Road in the morning, and the “If it’s not broken, why fix it?” sentiment. Getschow said although there haven’t been any problems, the city wanted to gauge public interest in the complete street idea. “We weren’t trying to fix anything,” Getschow said. “We weren’t looking for a solution to a problem.

Baker road, is – everything that’s there is working well. It’s was an idea that we thought we’d throw out there, see what the reaction is.” The city was going to base a large part of its decision on public feedback, and since the citizens said don’t change it, they won’t move forward with the redesign, Getschow said. But, the city will continue to look for opportunities to make complete streets when they have the chance, he said. Ellis said although Baker Road plan won’t be implemented, the road will go to three lanes at its intersection with County Road 62, which should reduce traffic-signal delays. Ellis provided the update during the meeting, and the city council didn’t have to take action on the project. Although, Tyra-Lukens and Councilmember Kathy Nelson agreed that the city should continue looking at having more pedestrian-friendly streets, but in this case, the city should not move forward if citizens aren’t in favor of it now.

member withdraws from election race BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS The Eden Prairie School Board election race will be down to eight, now. Long-time Boardmember Carol Bomben dropped out of the race Thursday, according to the school district. Bomben could not be immediately reached for comment. The filing period for candidacy ended 5 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 16, but candidates had until last Thursday to withdraw. Another resident, David Johnson, had also registered, but withdrew before the Aug. 16 deadline. The eight candidates now include Karla Bratrud, Dave Espe, Tim Fox, Derek Gunderson and Bill Lapadat. Incumbents who will run again to maintain their seat are board members John Estall, Holly Parker and Kim Ross. The general election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 8. Four board members will be elected to the school board on four-year terms.

EP schools outperform statewide average in science test BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS Compared to statewide results, Eden Prairie students performed well in a statewide science test taken last school year. As the grade increases, so did the test scores, based on results that the Minnesota Department of Education released. Eden Prairie High School students made the highest marks (68 percent proficient), followed by eighth graders (67 percent proficient) and then fifth graders (50 percent proficient). Fifth-grade Eden Prairie students were the closest to matching statewide averages, while other Eden Prairie students outperformed the statewide averages by wider margins. Nearly 20 percent of Eden Prairie fifth-graders did not meet proficiency standards in the test; statewide, 24 percent of fifth-graders did not meet proficiency standards. In eighth grade, Eden Prairie students’ proficiency increased by two percent from 2010 and exceeded the state average by 22 percent. The Eden Prairie high school students’ 2011 proficiency was a 9 percent increase from 2010, and it was 15 percent

Melissa Krull said in a statement. “Our enhanced science curriculum, implemented last year in 2010-11, aligns with

the new state standards. It should enable continued proficiency growth in the years ahead. “Implementing 50 minutes of science daily in conjunction with our strengthened science curriculum will help address the static nature of fifth grade scores. … Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) principles are also being implemented into all grade levels of our elementary schools over the next several years, and several fifth-grade classrooms will implement STEM principles this fall.” The statewide test was the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments – Series II. Currently, results from the science assessment do not impact Adequate Yearly Progress under the federal No Child Left Behind Act. Reading and Math MCA-II scores are used to calculate AYP, results of which will be released in mid to late September. In the second week of August, Gov. Mark Dayton directed the Minnesota Department of Education to apply for a federal waiver from some NCLB requirements, hoping the state can create its own school improvement efforts without the sanctions that come from the federal mandates.

OPINION Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011

The day the war came home BY DANIEL CALLAHAN SUN NEWSPAPERS It’s been a few months since my previous visit, but last week I found myself driving up to a church I’ve been very familiar with for years. From baptisms to confirmations to weddings — including my own — I’ve often been back to that same church to celebrate numerous joyful and happy occasions with family and friends. This was the first funeral. I cannot and will not claim a close friendship with the departed. To do so would be a disservice to his memory. At best, I can say we were childhood buddies. It was difficult to find parking, and I ended up walking a while to the church. Over the past decade, I’ve been lucky enough to never have to go to one of these funerals. But I can say with absolute certainty that, after 10 years, the wars our country is engaged in came home. I can’t pretend the conflicts overseas are just political maneuvering anymore; war means heroism and it means sacrifice. I know this is the point where I am supposed to make an argument for or against the use of military force in other countries. You, the readers, might expect me to use this tragedy as an example of whatever “agenda” I might have. But, that's just something I'm not going to do. This is a time to remember those who serve or who have served and honor them for that reason alone. Forget the politics, forget pushing for drawdowns or surges, and remember that those things mean people – people who are willing to stand up and serve their country regardless of the cost.

There really is something for everyone at the state fair On Monday morning I was weaving my way through the state fairgrounds in Falcon Heights, on my way to take a picture for today’s paper. There were plenty of cars, delivery trucks and golf carts making their way through the fairgrounds as I drove toward my destination. It was a little too crowded for my liking, despite the fact many vendors hadn’t made it to the fairgrounds to set up their commercial display, less than 72 hours before the 12-day ceremonial end to summer in Minnesota. As someone who lost his appreciation for the chaos and disorder that is the state fair many years ago, it’s ironic that when I was looking to burn vacation time in 2007 and earn extra income for my future travels, I wound up at the fair. What was supposed to be a oneyear venture – hawking merchandise – continues to this day. I spend more than 90 hours at the fairgrounds each year, and little of that is leisure time. But I do spend a few minutes now and again taking in one of the fair’s many attractions. Some people attend grandstand concerts at the fair, others enjoy rotating at high rates of speed along the midway. There’s one simple thrill I never tire of at

MIKE HANKS Bloomington Sun-Current Community Editor

the fair, going upward. Slowly. I ride the space tower every year, at least once. That minute at the top, circling around the tower, provides a great aerial view. During the day you can see for miles. At night you can see the lights that dot the downtown skylines of Minneapolis and St. Paul. At any time of day you get a great look down upon the sea of humanity that congregates day after day at the fair. I could spend an hour up there watching the assembled masses below. For a different view, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources offers an 84step climb to the top of its fire tower, weather permitting. The tower opened in 1966, but stood silent for nearly three decades. In 2007 the tower was repaired and open to the public once again. I made the hike one morning last year. It’s not as tall as the space tower, but it provides a great view nonetheless. The fire tower is next to the DNR building, where the out-

door fishpond and indoor fish tanks attract hundreds of people at any given time. If you’re not elbow-to-elbow on a busy Saturday afternoon it’s a great exhibit. You rarely go wrong with a live animal display. That’s why Bob’s Snake Zoo and Monty’s Traveling Reptile Show are popular destinations year after year, as well as the livestock barns. I prefer an up close look at a caged snake over a penned sow, but to each their own. Either way, a look at the animals always takes my mind off of the human congestion elsewhere. And I’ve overdue to visit my favorite part of the fair, Heritage Square. Parallel to the midway, the square is often forgotten, yet I find it has more to offer than anywhere else on the fairgrounds. From the Minnesota Newspaper Museum that features a working printing press of yesteryear to train cars that now serve as museum showrooms featuring artifacts and pictures of fairs gone by, it’s a great way to spend an hour or two. I’m not one to recommend the fair to anyone, yet I’m proof that the fair has something to offer everyone.

More people took the bus in first half of 2011 MVTA on pace to break 2008 ridership record BY MATTHEW HANKEY • SUN NEWSPAPERS As gas prices slowly rise, so does the number of people using public transportation in the Twin Cities suburbs. The Suburban Transit Providers have reported an increase in suburban bus and transportation ridership during the first six months of 2011, including communities in the south metro. The Suburban Transit providers service 12 communities: Apple Valley, Burnsville, Eagan, Rosemount and Savage via the Minnesota Valley Transit Authority; Chaska, Chanhassen and Eden Prairie via SouthWest Transit; Prior Lake Laker Lines and Shakopee Transit offer BlueXpress service; along with Maple Grove Transit and Plymouth Metrolink. Robin Selvig, manager of customer relations with the Minnesota Valley Transit Authority, points to two factors causing an increase in people riding the bus.

Tim O’Hara, right, places his bike on the front of a Minnesota Valley Transit Authority bus Aug. 18 at the Apple Valley Transit station. Ohara uses the bus service twice a week. (Photo by Matthew Hankey • Sun Newspapers) “One is obviously the increase in gas prices has people looking for alternate ways to get to work to make it cheaper for them,” Selvig said.

“Secondly, some of the (buses) have really stepped up with the services they provide.” An improved service Selvig referred

to are the direct routes from the MVTA, SouthWest Transit and Maple Grove Transit to the University of Minnesota. One bus rider who has taken advantage of this direct service is Tim O’Hara of Rosemount. This spring, the timing belt failed in O’Hara’s vehicle and he had to rely on public transportation to get around. Recently unemployed, O’Hara donates plasma for extra money at a plasma center near the university and takes the direct route to get there. Since O’Hara has been taking the bus for only three months, he can’t speak to an increase in ridership from last year, but he has begun to recognize more and more people on his routes. “I see a lot of regulars,” O’Hara said. The MVTA has seen a 7 percent increase for the first half of 2011 – 1,270,924 riders — compared to 1,186,182 in the first half of 2010, according to the Suburban Transit Association. The MVTA is on pace to break the record set in 2008 – 2,638,803 riders. BlueXpress Service led all systems with a more than 15 percent increase for the first six months of 2011 over the same period last year. Plymouth Metrolink saw nearly a 14 percent increase and Maple Grove Transit showed a 6.5 percent increase for the same period. He calls his route a “feeder route,” meaning he funnels passengers to stations that take them into downtown Minneapolis, St. Paul and the University of Minnesota. In the past year, he’s noticed a slight increase in ridership and during peak hours, he can barely catch his breath. “I’m going like a madman from 5:30 to 9:30 a.m.,” Schnarr said. Taking a bus has benefits not afforded to drivers of individual vehicles, said Selvig. “They can relax,” Selvig said. “They can read. They can dabble on their technological equipment.” Willis Branning, a Dakota County commissioner and chair of the MVTA board, appreciates that more people have been taking public transportation this year. “I’m happy that people are riding the bus,” Branning said. “Right now, people are finding that the bus is more efficient than ever.” O’Hara, who used to drive ‘Class A’ vehicles, said he enjoys not driving so often and taking the bus gives him an opportunity to spend quality time with his young daughter, he said. “She loves the bus,” O’Hara said. “Sometimes, she offers to pay.”

Burnsville-based yoga class open to all despite means Instructor says it’s not about money BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS During these tough economic times, individuals interested in the yoga experience now have an option – one not requiring large monthly dues. Yoga instructor Sarah Mosser has created OMroom, donation-based yoga classes offered in Burnsville at Royal Banquet & Ballroom, 12750 Nicollet Ave., Ste. 203, above Jensen’s Café. Mosser holds two classes each week, 7-8:15 p.m. Tuesdays and 6-7 p.m. Thursdays. “I don’t think that yoga has anything to do with money. I think that business has everything to do with money,” Mosser said. “I’m not trying to run a business here. I’m trying to share my gift of teaching yoga with people who want to learn.” Regina Vong, Royal Banquet & Ballroom owner and a friend of Mosser, leases her friend space for her classes and has been a participant as well. Vong, as with Mosser, feels this is a way of giving back to the community. “When I had an opportunity to open a business, I wanted to do it in Burnsville

Mosser’s classes are donation-based, making it possible for just about anyone to enjoy the yoga experience. (Photo by Michael Ricci • Sun Newspapers) because I wanted to give back to the community,” Vong said. “When she wanted to do something similar, I was with it from the get go.”

Vong continued by saying that her friend’s class is helping members of the community by offering classes that they would not otherwise be able to attend.

“Not a lot of people can afford going to the gym or paying for this type of service, so I think it’s a wonderful opportunity for everybody to try it out and see how wonderful it is.” Vong added that Mosser’s donationbased class is definitely an example of her as a person, giving up her own time to instruct and educate others about a practice in which Mosser greatly believes. “She could actually be charging a lot for this type of service,” Vong said. “She is doing this out of the goodness of her heart. She made me a believer, and I had never done yoga before.” According to Mosser, she created the class because she knows from personal experience the positive benefits she has received from yoga. Coupled with this, Mosser said she is aware that some people may not be able to afford studio rates for a regular class. “I have fallen into a situation where I can help,” Mosser said. “I believe that people should have regular yoga available to them regardless of what their financial circumstances may be.” Currently a yoga instructor at a popuYOGA: TO NEXT PAGE

Yoga FROM PREVIOUS PAGE lar health club, Mosser commented on the limitations she wished to do away with in OMroom. “I felt that my students were being limited with the style of yoga we were teaching,” Mosser said. “I wanted to bring my students an open facility so that other students can come and have no limitations on their practice. I don’t want money to be a limitation.” Mosser expanded on various limitations that exist in other yoga classes at other locations and how limitations apply. “Some places, where I’m teaching yoga, there will be limitations about physical touch, which is understandable,” Mosser said. “There are limitations on the kinds of incense or if you can use incense or essential oils.” Kaity McIntosh-Tran is one of Mosser’s clients from

Apple Valley and makes the commute from her home in Apple Valley to Burnsville solely to have Mosser as an instructor. “She is such a great instructor that I decided to follow her wherever she goes because she is so wonderful,” McIntosh-Tran said, adding that the setting offers its advantages. “She is able to give hands-on adjustments.” Fellow classmate Armando Garcia of Burnsville met Mosser while attending yoga classes at another facility, and in keeping with Mosser’s philosophy, Garcia followed Mosser to OMroom. “I was interested in getting into a program that was a little bit outside the gym regiment,” Garcia said. “They are a little bit more restrictive.” According to Garcia, Mosser is very patient, and she observes her clients as they practice and guides them with regard to technique. Those new to yoga, according to Mosser, would more

At AirBroom Minnesota In Excelsior Can Help How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling? Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork. There are three main ways to prevent water damage. 1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99. 2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland

cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. The Hartmann’s at AirBroom Minnesota in Excelsior offer free no obligation repair estimates in the Western Metro area. Call John, Jim, or Lynda today to arrange a free no obligation estimate. Visit us at AirBroomMinnesota.com or call us at 952.545.2254. As a bonus, repair jobs over $750 scheduled with us prior to August 31st receive $100 off when you mention this article.

church group’s leader, Taormina’s actions prevented what could have been a tragedy. Taormina grabbed the wheel of a bus and safely brought it roadside after it was traveling down Interstate 494 with 65 children on board, after its driver slumped forward in his chair, unconscious. It was July 20, and the bus was taking children and volunteers from St. John the Baptist Church in Savage to a Feed My Starving Children event in Shakopee. Taormina, a 23-year-old Apple Valley resident, was sitting in the seat directly behind the bus driver. When the bus was approaching the Highway 212 exit, Taormina said he wasn’t paying close attention to the bus’ route; he was talking with children and parents around him. When he turned his head to talk with a student, he saw a startled look on their faces. Taormina looked forward, saw the bus steadily veer right before it hit the guardrail. A parent screamed something to the effect of, “he’s lost control” or “no one is driving the bus.” Looking behind the wheel, the driver was slumped forward, Taormina said. “I just grabbed the wheel and sort of straightened it out,” Taormina said. “I straightened it off, and then I was able to reach in and find the brake.”

He had never been in an emergency situation. He had never even been in a car accident, he said. He found it funny that he thought to hit the bus’ hazard lights after the bus stopped. At the time, Taormina said he didn’t know the bus driver, Marc Yadeau, was having a heart attack. When he tended to him after the bus stopped, he was unresponsive with irregular breathing. Shortly after, he stopped breathing and Taormina tried to get him off the bus with another adult, so they could administer CPR. That’s when the first responders arrived and took over, Taormina said. But, unfortunately he could not be helped. Yadeau passed away from the heart attack, pronounced later that day at a nearby hospital. Taormina’s response in the situation has confirmed his future career choice: police work. He’s starting his sophomore year studying criminal justice and law enforcement at Inver Hills Community College in Inver Grove Heights. “It kind of cemented my choice, my career path,” Taormina said. For his actions, Taormina has been getting a lot or recognition – from co-workers, news outlets and the city of Eden Prairie. Eden Prairie Police Chief Rob Reynolds and Mayor Nancy Tyra-Lukens presented Taormina with a special commendation during the Aug. 16 city council meeting. BUS: TO PAGE 18

Bus FROM PAGE 16 In his presentation, Reynolds said that Taormina’s response is rare, even if he and those like him say otherwise. “What’s really neat about these people … (they) are unaware of what they did or the magnitude of what they did, of what their actions resulted in,” Reynolds said. “These are the people that you see on the news that say, you know, ‘it was really nothing. I just did anything (that) anybody would have done it had they been put in my place.’

In the Community, With the Community, For the Community

“But, that’s not true. Anybody wouldn’t have done it. It takes a very special person to do that, and it is something. It’s something really big. The actions that these people take generally save their own lives or the lives of others.” Even after the recognition and those kind words, Taormina said he just did what he thought he should do, and after watching how the first responders, police, firefighters and state troopers responded and acted with the children that day – they are the heroes. “That’s what I was responsible for. These kids are my responsibility,” Taormina said. “They expected me to do that. … For me to step up one day, I just don’t think that’s a big deal compared to what they do everyday.”

COMMUNITY NOTES C.H. Robinson helps supply local food shelves Employees at C.H. Robinson Worldwide Inc. are taking time out of their lunch hour to make sure that those in need have fresh vegetables on their plates during the dinner hour. The C.H. Robinson Community Giving Garden, opened in the spring of 2011, was inspired by C.H. Robinson’s Summer of

Wellness campaign which encourages employees to participate in a variety of community and wellness events in support of healthy living. More than 100 employees from C.H. Robinson’s Eden Prairie offices teamed up and are responsible for planting, watering, weeding and harvesting their plots throughout the growing season. After harvesting, employees donate all the items to People Reaching Out to Other People, a volunteer-driven agency serving

the residents of Chanhassen and Eden Prairie. In addition to creating a Community Giving Garden, C.H. Robinson also donated a plot of land to Hands for Harvest, a local non-profit organization co-founded by a C.H. Robinson employee, Travis Dahlke. Hands for Harvest aims to build community and provide food for local food shelves by working together to plant, cultivate and harvest crops on volunteer farms.

Over the past two years, Hands for Harvest has grown and donated over 20,000 pounds of potatoes, carrots and onions to local food shelves and food banks. In addition to working with other area food shelves, Hands for Harvest will also supply PROP with potatoes for their clients.

Adam Bray The right-handed pitcher for Eden Prairie threw a six-hitter and struck out nine to lead his team to a 2-1 victory over Las Vegas, Nev., Aug. 16 in the semifinals of the 2011 American Legion World Series in Shelby, N.C.

BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Eden Prairie’s players didn’t mind spending a little extra time in Shelby, N.C., because they became the fifth Minnesota team to win an American Legion World Series baseball championship. Eden Prairie (43-8) edged Tupelo, Miss., 5-4 in a 13-inning championship game before 5,896 spectators at Keeter Stadium Aug. 16. It was a strong comeback for EP after a 14-3 loss to Midland, Mich., in openinground action of the double-elimination tournament Aug. 12. But the Minnesota and Central Plains Region 6 champions rebounded to win five consecutive games to claim the World Series title. Eden Prairie finished second in the 2007 and 2010 tournaments. Eden Prairie defeated Waipahu, Hawaii, 10-2, Gaffney, S.C., 12-2, Tupelo 14-4 and Las Vegas, Nev., 2-1 before rallying to beat Tupelo in the title game. “The last day was a long one for us because we had to beat Las Vegas first before meeting Tupelo,” said Eden Prairie coach Scott Hackett. “I don’t know how the players could play 22 innings because I was exhausted just coaching them. I think the adrenaline kicked in for our team during the championship game. “We were disappointed with our firstgame loss to Midland, but the guys kept battling. We started to get clutch hitting and good pitching as the tournament progressed.” Eden Prairie players and coaches didn’t get any rest after winning the championship-game marathon. The team checked out of its hotel by 4 a.m. for a bus ride to Charlotte for a 6 a.m. flight. Eden Prairie’s delegation had a layover of about two hours in Chicago before arriving back in the Twin Cities

EP scored twice in the second inning on Ryan Maenke’s two-run double. Blake Schmit hit a solo home run in the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-3. In the eighth, Tyler Peterson came through with a run-scoring double that sent the game into extra innings. In the top of the 13th, Eden Prairie’s Peterson walked and advanced to third on a fielding error. Then Peterson scored the go-ahead run on a groundout by Jordan Smith. Tupelo threatened in the bottom half of the inning with one out as two players

reached base on singles. But EP relief pitcher Lance Thonvold picked off a runner at second. The final batter he faced grounded out, and the celebration was on. Tyler Ruemmele was Eden Prairie’s starting pitcher and gave up seven hits and four runs (one earned) in seven innings. He also struck out five. Thonvold pitched the final six innings and was credited with the win. He gave up five hits and struck out four.

By: Ali Holman, co-owner of www.coreconditioningtraining.com I think we can all agree that eating is fun. Not only is it a way for us to socialize, reward ourselves and comfort ourselves, it also is the one area of fitness where people have the most trouble. Wouldn’t it be great to know that the choices you make are actually helping your fitness program? More importantly, wouldn’t it be even better to banish the word “diet” from your vocabulary? Chances are, if you are embarking on a “diet”, it will have a beginning and an end. The end is usually followed by slowly going back to old habits and ends you right back where you started. With our clients, we really encourage them to focus on a Lifestyle Change with room for “cheat meals” and realistic goals; which inevitably lead to lifelong results and without the emotional roller coaster of a diet.

Core/Conditioning Training’s List of “Fat Burning Foods”

eggs

low-fat dairy

Eggs are high in protein and low in calories. You may have heard all the warnings about eggs and your health: opt for eggwhites for the low-cholesterol, fatburning effect. Eggs also contain the vitamin B-12, a great supplement for breaking down fat cells.

Studies show that women who eat low-fat dairy products (such as non-fat yogurt and low-fat milk) three to four times a day lost 70 percent more fat than low-dairy dieters.

beans

oatmeal

Beans are one of the best sources of protein, fiber and iron. Some of the best beans to ear are: • Navy Beans • White Beans • Kidney Beans • Lima Beans

Oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber, which helps reduce blood cholesterol by flushing those bad digestive acids out of your system. Skip the flavored oatmeals - you lose out on all the health benefits. If you must sweeten your oatmeal, do so by adding fruit.

olive oil

lean meats

Certain fats are good for you, and your body needs them. Olive oil is one of those “good fats.” It helps you burn fat and keeps your cholesterol down. One ounce of extra virgin olive oil contains about 85% of the daily value for monosaturated fat.

Search for lean meats - chicken (baked, broiled, grilled), fish and turkey - which are all high in protein. It is a good rule of thumb to consume at least one half-gram protein per pound of body weight each day. A chicken breast gets you well on your way, with about 22 grams of protein.

whole grains

interval training

Our body needs carbohydrates, despite what the fad diets tell you. Avoid processed carbohydrates such as white breads, bagles, pastas and white rice and look for whole grains that have not been processed and contain the fiber and minerals your body needs.

Interval training is defined as short, repeated bouts of intense exercise with minimal rest. You can burn major calories and get an all-over workout in less than 30 minutes. When you see people who are “cut,” chances ar they are partaking in interval training.
