COMMUNITY NOTES Health care reform to be discussed next week Weather permitting, the former director of cardiology at Hennepin County Medical Center will speak at the Bloomington Progressive Issues Forum next week in Bloomington. The program begins 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, at Davanni’s Restaurant, 8605 Lyndale Ave. S., Bloomington. A dinner social begins at 5:30. Dr. Morrison Hodges, professor emeritus at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine, will discuss the features of the Affordable Health Care Act, for which the implementation process is underway. Hodges had been scheduled to speak in February, but the meeting was postponed due to a weather advisory. Info: addiemattson@comcast.net.

Optimists Club to host homelessness speaker The manager of the Suburban Host

Home Program for homeless youth will speak at next week’s Bloomington Breakfast Optimists Club meeting. Program Manger Jenny Lock will speak during the meeting, which begins 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, at La Quinta Inn, 5151 American Blvd. W. The program provides homeless youth with safe, stable and supportive host homes. It is estimated that 2,500 youth between the ages of 12 and 21 are homeless each night in Minnesota. Approximately 100 homeless youth are from the western suburbs of Hennepin County, according to Lock. Volunteer hosts offer a spare bedroom to a homeless youth and provide food and compassion during the months the youth stays with them. Info: bloomingtonoptimists.org.

Annual Taste of Japan dinner is Saturday The Bloomington Sister City Organization will honor Japan and its recovery from the tsunami of one year

ago during the annual Taste of Japan event this weekend. The annual fundraising dinner is 6 p.m. Saturday, March 24, at the Hilton Minneapolis-Bloomington, 3900 American Blvd. W. The event will feature a silent auction and Japanese dinner with live entertainment from CODA, Sansei Yonsei Kai dance group and a Japanese sword demonstration. The Taste of Japan is BSCO’s largest fundraiser. It helps sponsor student, adult, business and athlete delegates traveling to Izumi City, Japan. Tickets for BSCO members are $50 for adults and $20 for students 22 and younger. For non-members tickets are $55 for adults and $25 for students. Scholarship winners to perform in Bloomington Thursday Musical will present its

Student Scholarship Competition Winner’s Concert next week in Bloomington. The free concert is 7 p.m. Thursday, March 29, in the Schneider Theater of Bloomington Center for the Arts, 1800 W. Old Shakopee Road. The program will showcase the achievements of the first-place winners in the Thursday Musical Young Artist Scholarship Competition. Three age levels – junior high, senior high and college – in each of five instrument categories – piano, strings, winds or brass, voice and guitar – will be featured. The students will perform a variety of short solo selections from the classical concert hall repertoire. For more than 100 years the organization has supported the Young Artist Scholarship Program, encouraging developing musicians with opportunities for recital performance, scholarships, competition experience, monetary awards and featured concert performance. Thursday Musical will award $20,000 in scholarships to young artists this year. Info: thursdaymusical.com.
