Academy owners Kirill Bak and wife Svetlana Gavrilova trained at The Vaganova Ballet Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia, and performed around the world with the Mussorgsky State Opera and Ballet and the Boris Aifman Ballet before coming to the United States 10 years ago to open the school in Eden Prairie. They teach students the Vaganova syllabus, which combines the strongest parts of different ballet techniques from around the world. Bak said the Linder brothers have improved a lot since starting at the Academy. The version of the “The Nutcracker” performed by the school is a close adaptation of the original Russian version, which was choreographed by Marius Petipa and based on the story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” by E. T. A. Hoffmann. Many of the steps from the original ballet, which premiered more than a century ago in St. Petersburg, Russia, are replicated in the local performances. Leo, a seventh-grader at South View, is dancing in several roles including a soldier and Russian. He’s looking forward to the performances Friday, Dec. 17, through Sunday, Dec. 18, at the Eden Prairie High School Performing Arts Center. “It’s quite exciting to be on stage,” he said. Maria, a second-grader at Normandale Elementary School, said she enjoys dancing ballet with her

Parents Irina and Bruce Linder will help out backstage, along with other parents of dancers ages 3-18. Students at the school come from around the Twin Cities metro. “The Nutcracker” includes four other Edina youth ages 4-7. Irina Linder said the show is not only a Linder family tradition, but a holiday staple for all. “It really puts you in the Christmas mood,” she said. “With the kids dancing, it’s quite touching.” Community Editor Chris Dillmann contributed to this story.
