Edina urges holiday light recycling

BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS Each year, nearly 7,000 children, teens and adults take classes and workshops at the Edina Art Center. And when the approximately 50 faculty members aren’t leading lessons, they’re working on their own craft. They’ll display their art in the annual Faculty Exhibit, which opens with a reception 5-8 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 6, in the Foss Gallery at the Edina Art Center. Anne Spooner, who’s participating in the show, said she draws some of her inspiration from young students at the Edina Art Center. “I really enjoy working with them and seeing what they create,” said Spooner, who teaches in the youth Art Academy.

“They have an ability to be very spontaneous and with free with what they’re doing.” Spooner said animals, a popular subject for children, are also popping up in her paintings and clay work. “I’ll show them what I’m doing sometimes, but I feel like I’m influenced by what they’re doing too,” said Spooner, who’s been working in a bird theme lately. She said the birds, as guardians of the trees, symbol-

ize messages of compassion, healing, hope and protection. Spooner, who is also program and gallery coordinator for the Edina Art Center, said each faculty member is invited to exhibit one or two of their creations in the show. Their works include drawings, paintings, pottery, jewelry, mosaic artwork, sculpture, photography, media arts and more. “It’s a nice way for the student to see the instructors’ work, and for a person who might be interested in classes the quality of work our instructors produce,” said Spooner. Much of the faculty work shown will be available for purchase. The exhibition continues through Wednesday, Feb. 16. Regular gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The Edina Art Center also has an annual Members’ Juried Art Exhibition each fall.

The city of Edina is working with the Recycling Association of Minnesota on the second-annual Recycle Your Holidays, a lights recycling program. The Recycling Association, in partnership with WCCO-TV, Xcel Energy and Ace Hardware, began the holiday lights recycling effort in 2009. “Last year, 100,000 pounds of holiday lights were recycled through the holiday light recycling program. This year, the goal is 200,000,” said Solvei Wilmot, city of Edina recycling coordinator. “Add to the pounds and benefit the environment by recycling your holiday lights.” Residents are encouraged to replace their old lights with energy-efficient LED lights and recycle the old strands. Switching to LED lights will not only save energy, but also save consumers money on home energy costs. Many utility companies and hardware stores offer rebates on LED lights. Recycle Your Holidays recycles every part of a light string – from light bulbs to copper. Edina Residents can drop off holiday light strings until Saturday, Jan. 1, at Edina City Hall, 4801 W. 50th St., or Concord Elementary School, 5900 Concord Ave. Strings may also be mailed directly to the Recycling Association of Minnesota, P.O. Box 14497, St. Paul, MN 55114. Info: www.recycleminnesota.org.
