Michel will not seek fourth term A family of fliers

Senator from Edina’s District 41 will step aside BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS Three-term state Sen. Geoff Michel, REdina, announced Monday he will not become a four-term lawmaker. The senator for District 41, which covers Edina and western Bloomington, cited as a major factor in his decision his desire to spend more time with his wife and four daughters. “(My wife) Annie, our four daughters and I have been discussing our options since the state shutdown last summer. … It’s time for me to return their support and focus on a family future that is getting busier every year and may include four college tuitions,” he said in a letter to his constituents. “This is about family math,” he said in an interview. The attorney-by-trade insisted his decision is not about his prominent role in the chain of events leading to the revelation in December that then-Senate Majority Leader Amy Koch, R-Buffalo, had an inappropriate relationship with a staffer. Michel admitted he first was informed of the relationship in September, although he initially told reporters he had known about it only for weeks. Michel has added, however, that he contacted attorneys and staff Sept. 23

Three generations of Edina men take to the skies BY JOSEPH PALMERSHEIM CONTRIBUTING WRITER Jim Roberts works in a front office, but unlike most offices, his is located at 33,000 feet, and moves at 500 mph. Roberts, an Edina High School alum (Class of ‘79), is a DC-9 pilot for Delta Airlines. He has logged more than 15,000 flight hours since becom-

ing in airline pilot in the mid-1980s, and has flown for Continental, Northwest, Delta and People Express Airlines. It runs in the Roberts family – he is one of three generations who have felt the urge, to paraphrase the words of John Gillespie Magee Jr.’s 1941 sonnet “High Flight,” to slip the surly bonds of Earth and touch the face of God. Roberts’ late father, Bob Roberts, learned to fly shortly after

Jim did, and both of Jim’s sons, A.J. and Phil, are in the process of earning their own private pilots licenses. As a boy, Jim used to climb on to the roof of his Edina home with binoculars and a radio scanner to watch jets come in for landings at the nearby Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. Web editor for Republican Senate District 41 registered the web addresses the same day legislative redistricting maps were released BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS Last month’s legislative redistricting sent lawmakers all over Minnesota scrambling to respond to the new political maps, but one Republican in Edina was quicker than Democrats, snatching up a series of web domain names the DFL might have found handy. According to domain research database Whois.net, on Feb. 21 Angela Berger, the web editor for the GOP’s

Senate District 41 site, purchased sd49dfl.com, sd49dfl.org, sd49democrats.com, sd49democrats.org and dflsd49.com — the same day the state released redistricting plans that take effect this election cycle. The new maps give Edina and western Bloomington, which had been considered District 41, the District 49 label. The new district 49 also includes a portion of northeast Eden Prairie. Former DFL District 41 chair Tom LaForce noted Berger’s domain registries the night of Feb. 28 on his Facebook page, Politics in Edina. He said he was typing potential DFL domain names into his browser out of curiosity, when it appeared he was being redirected toward the GOP’s District 41 site. Further investigation brought up a name he recognized. “I saw Angie Berger registered it,” he DOMAINS: TO PAGE 22

COMMUNITY NOTES Super Attorney honored for ending abuse Shamus O’Meara will be recognized for his work that ended abuse for several hundred developmentally disabled Minnesotans. The Arc Minnesota Public Policy Recognition Event will honor O’Meara at 6 p.m., Wednesday, March 7, at Midland Hills Country Club in Roseville. Shamus O’Meara, Partner at the Edina Law firm of Johnson and Condon, was Lead Counsel in a court settlement that reached a landmark Class Action Settlement and put an end to the widespread restraint and seclusion of hundreds of people with disabilities at the Minnesota Extended Treatment Options facility in Cambridge. The Class Action Settlement stopped the state’s use of handcuffs and other restraints to deal with behavior challenges, except in emergencies. The settlement also pays $3 million to all the parties in the lawsuit. It will also require the state to spend nearly $1 million on training for people who work

with individuals with developmental disabilities. The state is required to develop a plan, consistent with U.S. Supreme Court rulings, to ensure that Minnesotans with disabilities have opportunities to live in their community consistent with their own dreams and aspirations. Shamus O’Meara and the firm of Johnson and Condon represent school districts, businesses, and local governments. O’Meara also advocates for increased independence, inclusion, and self determination for people with developmental disabilities and their families. O’Meara has been recognized as an Attorney of the Year by “Minnesota Lawyer,” and a Super Lawyer by “Minnesota Law and Politics.” The Arc Minnesota is a private, nonprofit, statewide voluntary organization. Its mission is to promote and protect the human rights of people with developmental disabilities and actively support their full inclusion and participation in the community throughout their lifetimes. Tickets for the event honoring O’Meara are still on sale. Info: 651-604-8070 (Dawn Lampros).

BY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS Minnesota Third Congressional District DFL candidates are getting their campaigns underway, hitting coffee shops and hosting meet and greets before a March 14 debate. Brian Barnes and Sharon Sund are vying for a DFL endorsement to ultimately run against Republican Congressman Erik Paulsen in the November primary election. Both have been hosting several meetings to share their platform so residents and delegates could get to know them. Paulsen has also been in the area talking with constituents, including a stop at the Eden Prairie Cub Foods, where people had a chance to share their thoughts and concerns with the Congressman.

A spokesman for Paulsen, Tom Erickson, said it’s still early in the campaign season, and Paulsen is focused on serving his constituents while the DFL candidates work through their endorsement campaigning. And, they have been. One of Barnes’ meetings, mainly to meet with DFL delegates, was on Sunday March 4 at Parkway Apartments in Eden Prairie, where he emphasized he would be running a positive campaign against Sund, but “attack” Paulsen’s record in the primary election if he gets the DFL endorsement. He also stressed that it’s possible for a DFL candidate to win the Third District, which has been Republican leaning for some time. He thinks it’s possible even after redistricting. Under the new Congressional district map, the Third District will expand to include outlying western suburb cities such as Shakopee, Chaska CANDIDATES: TO NEXT PAGE

Candidates FROM PREVIOUS PAGE and Victoria among others. A special redistricting panel, appointed by the Minnesota Supreme Court, created the new electoral maps that will take effect next year and serve as the 2012 election blueprint. The districts determine which geographic areas state senators, members of the state house and members of U.S. Congress will represent. The new maps are based on population changes reported in the 2010 Census. Barnes said DFL ties are strong in the district, if the state house votes in recent elections are compared to the third district congressional votes, there is DFL strength; only the congressional races have been weak, which can change. “You look at this Third District and it is absolutely winnable,” Barnes said. Sund has been hosting similar meet and greets throughout recent weeks. She said she has been running a positive campaign to get positive representation in Congress.

One of her major policy ideas was announced at the end of February, a new step to a foreclosure prevention program. “HARP (the Home Affordable Refinance Program) helps people who are current on their mortgage payments refinance their loan before falling behind,” Sund said on her website. “HAFA (The Home Affordable Foreclosure Alternatives) program allows people to abandon their homes to foreclosure with the intent of minimizing the damage to their credit score. … “‘I propose modifying HAMP to include mediation as a required step prior to foreclosure. Also, I propose requiring any bank that offers or buys FHA insured mortgages to participate in mediation prior to foreclosing on a home.’” The two candidates will introduce themselves further and talk about issues during a debate 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 14 at Minnetonka City Hall. Requiring CPR instruction can save lives Why are Jamie LaLonde, Natasha Fleischman and Dale Wakasugi supporting a bill that would require Minnesota’s public schools to teach cardiopulmonary resuscitation? For the best possible reasons: It saved their lives. Both the Minnesota House and Senate are considering bills that would require all Minnesota Public Schools to teach CPR to students grades 7-12. Chief authors Sen. Dan Hall and Rep. Mary Holberg have bi-partisan support. In recent testimony, a Minnesota School Boards Association representative expressed reasonable concerns about adding a new mandate when budgets are challenged. However, what’s a higher priority, than teaching young people how to save lives? Testimony suggested that about half of Minnesota’s school districts do, and half don’t teach CPR. So I hope the bill passes. Twenty-year-old Jamie LaLonde of Bloomington testified that she was working at the Mall of America when “I had a sudden cardiac arrest … I was 18 years old. I’m helping the American Heart Association with this bill because the only

JOE NATHAN Guest Columnist

reason I’m alive today is because someone that was trained in CPR made it to the scene within five minutes.” “Although I’m very lucky I still can’t help but think that none of the 16-20 year olds around me that were working with me knew to start CPR. Sudden Cardiac Arrest can happen to anyone, even young people, and I think it’s important we prepare people as best we can so that if they ever do get the chance to save a life they can,” she said. LaLonde is attending school at Inver Hills Community College to become a paramedic. Stillwater School Board member Natasha Fleischman also recently testified about the bill. She wrote, “CPR saved my life. I was a 33-year-old mother of two in 2002 when my heart stopped for the first time (with no known heart condition). I was working at the St. Paul Public Schools. I was on first floor and the director

of safety and security, Will Waterkamp ran down from the 4th floor to perform CPR on me. After the St. Paul Fire Department defibrillated me five times, I was taken to Regions Hospital, diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy and received an implantable defibrillator (ICD).” She continued, “I have worked with the AHA and the Go Red campaign, as well as WomenHeart: the National Coalition of Women with Heart Disease and the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association to build knowledge and skills that save lives…. When someone suffers sudden cardiac arrest, which is often the case when a high school athlete collapses on the field, every minute counts. This legislation is meant to have every high school student learn CPR before graduating and have the ability to save the lives of family members or friends.” “In Stillwater, we already teach CPR in our required health classes. When I conducted a study for the AHA using the CPR anytime kit, we wanted to compare two schools, one that taught traditional CPR and one that only had a 30-minute course with the anytime kit. We

taught kids to do CPR in 30 minutes. And the preliminary data showed that their compressions were more consistently effective than those of students in a 4hour traditional CPR class. Pretty impressive what can be accomplished!” Fleischman said. Finally, Dale Wakasugi said, “Since my first arrest in December 2007, I have made a commitment to myself to help others by ‘paying it forward’. To help place as many AEDs in as many public places as possible and to help raise awareness of the importance of knowing CPR and how to use an AED… I want to help high school students learn CPR and how to use an AED, since my key rescuer was a high school student who just learned CPR and how to use an AED in health class three weeks prior to my event.” Joe Nathan, former public school teacher, administrator, PTA president and parent of three public school graduates, is director of the Center for School Change at Macalester College. He can be reached at jnathan@ macalester.edu. Columns reflect the opinion of the author.

It’s time for us to embrace social media When it comes to social media there are two different Jared Huizengas. First, there’s Jared the individual who has embraced social media as his second-favorite form of communication (behind only text messaging). If he can’t send you a text message or write on your wall, he probably doesn’t want to talk to you badly enough to call. Second, there’s Jared the newspaper guy, who eschews new forms of communication – particularly those that limit his longwinded nature. If he is lim-

JARED HUIZENGA Wayzata/Long Lake/Orono Community Editor ited in any way, be it a character limit or space, he’s just going to call you so he can continue to ramble. In recent months, there’s been great discussion around the newsroom as to how we can embrace social media as a new tool and utilize it so it helps us as well as our readers.

Some editors have started Facebook pages for their editions, while others have migrated to Twitter. I fall into the latter group. Although, truth be told, it isn’t all that new. Back in 2009, we experimented with producing daily newscasts. These newscasts lasted anywhere from 2 to 10 minutes and included news from our coverage areas and neighboring cities. Some editors naturally took to being on screen. Others – myself included – showed that no matter what our moms said,

we have faces made for radio and voices made for print. During the dark days of newscasts, I started a Twitter account and used it to Tweet links to our daily newscasts. It didn’t help drive up my “ratings” much. Once the newscast experiment was discontinued, I put it away in the back of my mind. Along with that memory went the Twitter account. That is until recently when I decided to start using it again HUIZENGA: TO PAGE 11

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Becoming a Marine something to be proud of, not dehumanizing To the editor: From a wife and mother of a marine: Thank you for running the articles on the Marine Corps. It showed what it takes to become one of the few, the proud. It has the longest basic training of all the armed forces (13 weeks vs. 6). My son left the Twin Cities as a boy — 13 weeks later he was a man. He had been yelled at but it did not dehumanize him — it strengthened him. He learned from his [drill instructors] to be respectful, responsible, disciplined, to be a

team player, self-reliant, to be physically fit, that all people are created equal. These values of love of God, Country and the Corps are with a Marine forever. Let us not forget Marines not only are soldiers but they protect our embassies, have helped in evacuations of civilians and diplomats, offer humanitarian assistance to people not only of America but of the world. If you are not sure what it is or what it takes to be a Marine — ask one. Once a Marine — always a Marine — a title that is earned, not given, and a title that is theirs forever. Friends, co-workers remember Andy Hamre Hamre was ECM-Sun Printing employee Andrew Hamre is being remembered this week as a man who loved fishing, his family and his friends. Hamre, 49, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 28, while at work at the ECM-Sun Printing facility in Hudson, Wis., from a massive heart attack. He leaves behind a wife, two sons, many friends and his co-workers – all who will miss him very much. During an afternoon break, Andy suffered a heart attack. Coworkers attempted CPR and called emergency crews, but he died a short time later. “As always, our teams pulled together but this time in an attempt to save Andy’s life,” plant employee Maria Beaupre said. “Despite all our efforts, Andy passed away.” His friends and family quickly mention “fishing” when asked what he liked doing the most in his free time. Andy was an avid fishermen, and had won several trophies for his catches. Annette said that Andy loved the New Richmond area for its great fishing, with Mary Park Lake being a favorite spot. “They’d catch bass, crappies, perch and sunnies there all the time,” Annette said. His main fishing buddy was son, Josh, age 14. “They’d compete against each other in their own bass tournaments,” Annette said. Last year, Josh won the contests. “He kicked his dad’s butt.” His co-workers at Sun Printing also knew how much he loved to fish. He and his son fished as often as they could, one

In fact, there’s virtually no chance that I can say “good morning” with those limitations. But what I can do by using it is get you headlines and let you know when there’s something going on, when there’s breaking news or I can just reach out for opinions from others. In turn, you can reach out to me without having to call or email. I try to keep the account as active as possible and my coworkers do as well. co-worker remembered. He also loved sports, and supported his son who played in a local baseball league every season. “Andy was a dedicated, hard-working and reliable employee who would stay to the end when things went wrong. When things got tough, Andy got tougher. He will be missed by many, as will his singing throughout the plant each afternoon once the deadlines had been met,” Cody Griffin, print plant manager, said. Annette said Andy enjoyed his work and his co-workers at Sun Printing, where he’d been employed for five years. The work team was like family, she said. There would be occasional disagreements, “but at the end of the day, it was all good,” she said. Andy grew up in northwest Minneapolis, and attended Edison High School. He worked in shipping and receiving, and he and Annette also operated a home daycare business there. They moved to Wisconsin after deciding it was time to get out of the city, and took the family to New Richmond. Their eldest son, Jonathan, 21, is a college student in Beloit, Wis. Annette Hamre said she was grateful for the friendship and support she has received from Andy’s co-workers and friends. “I just want to thank everyone for their help and for their prayers,” she said. asked. Recently I noticed other media outlets following some of the Sun Newspaper accounts. These accounts don’t actually tweet anything or interact with anyone, they just seem to be there trolling for information and using the stories and information tweeted by others as the basis for their own stories. This is something we will not do – we want this to be another tool for us to get the news to you and hear back from you. COMMUNITY NOTES Cantus to perform March 23 in Edina

(612) 850-6335

A cappella group, Cantus, will use song to tell the story of how music changed the world in 1989. Cantus will perform “The Singing Revolution: Songs Of the Baltic Awakening” from March 15-25 at five Twin Cities venues. Among them is a concert at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 23, at the Colonial Church of Edina, 6200 Colonial Way, and another at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, March 25, at Saint Bartholomew Catholic Church, 630 Wayzata Blvd East, in Wayzata. The nine-member singing group will present folk music of the Baltic states of Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia, along with the story of how the region joined hands in song to gain their independence from the Soviet Union in 1989. According to baritone Adam Reinwald, the group has been singing Baltic music for years but it was mostly Estonian in origin. They recently branched out to include music from Lithuania and Latvia as well. The group uses Baltic folk music to

illustrate the changing force of music. “The Singing Revolution” tells the story of the Baltic region regaining their independence from communism because they held on to their cultural heritage in quiet celebrations of music. Cantus rehearses and performs as chamber musicians, working without a conductor or music director. They have been acclaimed as “the premier men’s vocal ensemble in the United States” by Fanfare. Tickets are $25 and are available online or by phone. Info: 612-435-0055.

A Minnesota screenwriter whose numerous credits include the “Naked Gun” movies and the original “Police Academy” movie will deliver the keynote address at the Bloomington Theatre and Art Center’s ninth annual Writers’ Festival and Book Fair. The festival is 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 24, at the art center, 1800 W. Old Shakopee Road. Pat Proft, whose comedy career began as a high school student in Columbia Heights, will lead a screenwriting workshop in addition to delivering the keynote address. As a student Proft wrote sketches for pep fests. His early experiences include writing for Dudley Riggs’ Brave New Workshop in Minnapolis, a stint in radio in Bemidji and working in musical theater, including at Chanhassen Dinner Theatres. Proft became a stand-up comedian, sharing the stage at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles with Gary Shandling, David Letterman, Jay Leno, Chevy Chase, Steve

Martin and Robin Williams. As a writer he worked in television for several years, writing for programs such as “The Smothers Brothers Show” and “Welcome Back Kotter,” as well as the short-lived “Police Squad!” series that spawned the Naked Gun movies. From there, Proft’s career turned to feature films. His credits include Pat Proft “Bachelor Party,” the “Hot Shots” comedies and installments of the “Scary Movie” franchise. Proft’s keynote address is at 9:30 a.m., with the screenwriting workshop beginning at 11. The cost to attend each is $12. Additional Writers’ Festival workshops, panel discussions and optional lunches are also $12 per session and pre-registration is required. The book fair and author readings are free. A list of workshops and panels is available online at xr.com/write. For more information, call 952-563-8575.

BUSINESS NOTES New Edina store brings in seasoned team lead Dan Blackburn, an experienced store team leader, will bring his years of expertise to the upcoming Whole Foods Market. The Edina Whole Foods Market at Centennial Lakes on France Avenue will open Wednesday, April 18 and will bring one of its most experienced workers to head up the store. Blackburn has worked for the company for 20 years and has spent the last 10 making the Lake Calhoun store one of the most successful in the region. He will ensure that the Edina store has everything residents hope to find while shopping along with a few surprises, such as in-store events, cooking classes and a variety of community support programs.

Edina Realty Foundation helps the homeless Edina Realty in Edina announced that they awarded $43,500 in grants to organizations last year to help the homeless. The Edina offices at 6800 France and

50th and France awarded the money to organizations that provide housing and related services such as counseling and medical care to homeless children, individuals and families. Since its inception 16 years ago, the Edina Realty Foundation has donated more than $6.3 million to homeless-related nonprofit organizations throughout Minn., N.D., and western Wis. The money for the foundation comes from realtors who contribute part of their home sales commissions. The grants usually range from $500 to $5,000, and the average is $2,000. Edina Realty matches a portion of the contributions made by the realtors. The foundation also receives the proceeds from office fundraisers as well as individual donations from employees of Edina Realty, Edina Realty Home Services, Edina Realty Mortgage, Edina Realty Relocation and Edina Realty Title. The realtors and employees also volunteer at nonprofit organizations in their communities. Each Edina Realty office can decide where to earmark their donations to help support the homeless in their community.

Domains FROM PAGE 2 said. “I was surprised when she did that.” Entering sd49dfl.com — or any of the four other DFL-flavored domain names — brings the user to that address, but the page bears the nameplate of Godaddy.com, the service used to register the domains. “It’s like she’s trying top keep DFLers from getting their message out at all,” LaForce said.

Berger insisted she acted alone in registering the domain names. “This was an entirely personal transaction that I made, and that’s all I have to say about it,” she said when reached by phone. “It’s her personal thing to do. There is nothing we have authorized at all,” said Lynn Swon, Republican Senate District 41 co-chair. “It’s hard to stop an individual from doing what they are going to do.” A post under the name Angela Berger, who operates a blog called Conservative Cravings, later appeared in the comments section beneath an initial version

of this story posted on minnlocal.com. “Ironically, I didn’t even know about this technique of buying domain names until I saw this past summer that someone had purchased a derivative of my blog name and redirected it to the Edina Democrats website,” the commenter wrote. “If you type in conservativecravings.com, it sends you to SD41democrats.org. I guess it’s OK for a Democrat to buy up a domain name and redirect it but not a Republican. “ A search on Whois.net shows the domain has been claimed by an anonymous party. requesting elaboration. When asked about her personal views on the use of “cybersquatting” as a political tactic, Swon responded, “Given the title that I am, we’ve got no official comment on this at all.” The Minnesota DFL was looking into the domain purchases last week. “I don’t want to dignify this with a comment, because I really find it petty,” said Kate Monson, Minnesota DFL director of communications. The DFL does own, at least, dflsd49.org, although it directs browsers to the District 49 that still technically covers Andover, Ham Lake and most of Coon Rapids. The DFL’s page for District 41, which covers Edina for the time being, is sd41democrats.org. Neither LaForce nor the Minnesota DFL allege the domain purchases to be part of any concerted GOP strategy. “I don’t know how the local GOP makes its decisions,” LaForce posted on his the Politics in Edina Facebook page the afternoon of Feb. 29, “but I would like to believe it would not have agreed to do this. I have no way of knowing whether anyone other than Angie (Berger) was part of deciding to do this. Perhaps in the coming days we’ll learn more about what occurred here.”

Michel FROM PAGE 1 to initiate an investigation into the relationship. Michel said the false timeline he initially reported was for the protection of the identity of another staffer who reported the relationship. Koch stepped down as majority leader after the relationship was revealed. Michel, who chairs the Senate jobs and economic growth committee, lost his role as deputy majority leader in this year’s senate elections. Also a reason for the exit, Michel said, is his term-limit advocacy. The senator has authored a bill proposing a ten-year cap for lawmakers. “I’m imposing my own term limits on myself,” he said. Although it’s been ten years, Michel’s decision to end his tenure was unexpected to many. “It comes as a bit more of a surprise than it should have been, given his talk all these years,” said Lynn Swon, co-chair of the Senate District 41 Republican Party. It is unclear who will vie for the Republican endorsement in what, fol-

lowing last month’s redistricting, will be Senate District 49. “I think it’s way too early” to speculate on candidates,” Michel said, although the Distrcit 41 Republican Convention is about two weeks away, scheduled for March 24. The candidates will seek a job Michel said he regards fondly. “It’s a fun gig,” he said. “It’s a real honor to serve.” In doing so, Michel said his proudest achievements were his involvement in making TCF Bank Stadium a reality for the University of Minnesota, and passing the Abigail Taylor Pool Safety Act, which established safety measures for pool drains in response to an Edina girl’s ultimately fatal accident involving a pool drain. Michel also is proud of being part of the first Republican majority in the Senate in 38 years, and chairing the Senate Jobs and Economic Growth Committee. Now, after juggling it all — lawmaking, work and family — with the patient backing of his co-workers and family, “it is time for me to repay all the support I’ve received,” Michel said. “I’m concluding my Minnesota State Senate career and again it’s time to focus on my family and my career.”

Million Dollar Quartet Million Dollar Quartet is the smash hit Broadway musical, inspired by the true story of the famed recording session that brought together rock ‘n’ roll icons Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins for the first and only time. On December 4, 1956, these four young musicians were gathered together by Sam Phillips, the “Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll” at Sun Records in Memphis for what would be one of the greatest jam sessions of all time.

Fliers FROM PAGE 1 engineering class at Valley View Middle School deepened his love of aviation, and by age 17 Jim had flown solo and earned his license to fly. His father, by then a 50year-old World War II veteran and married father of four who had become president of the C.F. Haglin & Sons commercial general contracting firm, followed in his son’s contrails, as it were, and soon earned a license of his own. “He bought a plane – a single-engine Cessna 172, and we used to fly together,” Jim recalled. “We’d take family trips together. I had more experience than he did flying. It was enjoyable, great time spent together. [Because] he learned about the aviation world at the later age, he understood what I was doing when I was with the airlines. We were able to share things for many years, because he understood aviation. He was either watching me come in on Post Road, pick me up at the airport or listening to me on the scanner. It was quite a hobby of his. He

flew until he was 66.” Bob passed away Feb. 19 at the age of 89, and had last flown with his son in 1987. Like his father before him, Jim too has purchased a used Cessna 172 – the same model, the same color, and with a nearidentical tail number, according to Jim’s son, Phil, who is one of his father’s flight students (the other being his brother, A.J.) Phil recently soloed during his Christmas break, and has logged 30 hours of flight time. “[The solo] was one of the most thrilling things I’ve ever done,” Phil said. “We hangar the plane out of Flying Cloud [in Eden Prairie]. My dad went up with me, and we did three take-offs and landings. After the third, he hopped out and said, ‘Go take her up.’ That’s when my heart went up. You think, ‘What have I gotten myself into?’ But when it comes to it, you just think about what you need to do to get the plane on the ground. After my third landing, Dad came over and congratulated me, and that meant a lot.” Phil, a 20-year-old EHS alum currently studying at the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management, said he is considering a possible career in aviation.

“I have never had so much fun with something,” he said. “It’s a different feel. When I’m behind the controls, that’s where my head is at. I’m not thinking of anything else.” A.J., a 22-year-old EHS alum studying accounting and finance at Denver University, plans to continue his flight training, but isn’t seriously considering aviation as a career. “I want to do this for fun,” he said. “It’s a thrill, something most people don’t do. It’s another experience to get into a small aircraft and put a different perspective onto things.” “It’s an unbelievable bonding experience,” Jim said. “When you go flying with them, you are one-on-one. You are teaching them something you have such a large love for and interest in. The fact that they are wanting to learn to fly makes it easy to teach them, and it’s totally enjoyable.” Jim and his wife, Sherre, also have a teenage daughter, Callie, who is a sophomore in high school. “She’s a wonderful co-pilot,” he said. “But at this point, she’s more interested in doing well at school, and barrel races horses.”

Hornets earn their way back to the Xcel Energy Center Edina awarded fourth seed for state tourney BY JOHN SHERMAN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Going to state is becoming a habit for the Edina High boys hockey team, which will play at Xcel Energy Center for the sixth consecutive year. “It never gets old,” said Edina assistant coach Dick Blooston, who has coached with Curt Giles during all of those state appearances. For many of the boys on this year’s team, the state tournament will be a new experience. Connor Beaupre and Nick Leer are the only seniors on the Edina roster. A few of the juniors went to state last year, but for the most part this is a new team. Giles said the Edina team is a mature squad despite being young. “They get excited about coming to compete,” he said. “We have guys who

work hard and accept their roles.” The Section 2 champion Hornets will open state Class AA tournament play against Section 6 champion Benilde-St. Margaret’s at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 8, at the Xcel Energy Center. Veterans on the Edina team will attempt to tell their younger teammates what it’s all about. “This week, I want to help set the tone,” said Leer, who played on last year’s state team. “I’ll tell the younger players, don’t worry about anything but hockey.” That was the approach throughout the section tournament as Edina won three in a row. After taking a 3-1 lead against Burnsville in the Section 2AA finals Feb. 29 at Mariucci Arena, the Hornets needed late heroics to pull out a 6-3 win. HOCKEY: TO PAGE 29

Two goals from Hurley propelled the Edina High boys hockey team to a 6-3 victory over Burnsville in the Section 2AA boys hockey finals Feb. 29 at Mariucci Arena.

Jackson Lindell Lindell, a junior at Edina High, finished second in the 200-yard individual medley during the state Class AA boys swimming and diving meet March 3 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. His time was 1:54.99.

M.C. McGrory McGrory scored 21 points March 3 as the Edina High girls basketball team topped Prior Lake 66-52 in the Class 4A, Section 2 semifinals at Hopkins Lindbergh Center.

Buzz Rehnberg The Edina High sophomore helped the Hornets place fifth at the state Class AA boys swimming meet. He placed third in the 50yard freestyle with a time of 21.18 seconds. Rehnberg also swam on Edina’s third-place 200-yard medley relay and fourth-place 400-yard freestyle relays.

In the Community, With the Community, For the Community

Edina girls advance to finals Basketball team needs one more win to head to state BY JOHN SHERMAN SUN NEWSPAPERS Guards Katybeth Biewen and M.C. McGrory boosted Edina into the Class 4A, Section 2 girls basketball final. Biewen led all scorers with 23 points and McGrory added 21 in the Hornets’ 66-52 victory over Prior Lake March 3 at Hopkins Lindbergh Center. “Our backcourt play was fantastic,” said Edina head coach Matt Nilsen. “We handled Prior Lake’s pressure and held our composure. We have played a lot of close games this season. The girls are used to playing under pressure.” The Hornets opened a 33-23 halftime lead, but there were some anxious moments in the second half. At one point, Prior Lake cut the lead to only six points, 52-46.

“We did a good job of pushing the ball up the court,” said Biewen. “We have had our share of ups and downs this year, and we have learned how to hold our poise. We kept playing hard when Prior Lake made a few runs at us.” In addition to the backcourt excellence of Biewen and McGrory, the Hornets had a good effort from senior forward and co-captain Lindsey Johnson, who scored 10 points. Edina (24-4) will play Eden Prairie (22-5) for the section title at 7 p.m. Friday, March 9, at Hopkins Lindbergh Center. “We are happy to be in the finals,” said Biewen. “And we know Eden Prairie will be a tough opponent.” “Eden Prairie is a talented team with a couple of Division I players [Jackie Johnson and Shayne Mullaney],” said Nilsen. “We played Eden Prairie twice during the regular season, and we’re familiar with them.” Eden Prairie won the first meeting 63-56. Edina prevailed 3634 in the second game.

Flying at state Edina High swimmer Mitch Lentz wins the consolation heat of the 100-yard butterfly during the state Class AA meet March 3 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Lentz, Jackson Lindell, Brett Weicht and Buzz Rehnberg took third in state in the 200-yard medley relay. The Hornets finished fifth in the team standings. (Photo by Brian Nelson – Contributing Photographer)

Coach Willard Ikola recalls Hornets’ perfect hockey season – 1973-74 Willard Ikola had 616 varsity hockey victories during his illustrious coaching career in Edina. When he looks back on his career, Ikola can cite hundreds, maybe even thousands of highlights, but there’s one season that stood out above all others. His Edina-East team that went 24-0 in 1973-74 is considered one of the greatest Minnesota teams of all time. “We never had balance like we did that year, that’s for sure,” Ikola said in a recent interview. “Craig Norwich was the best defenseman in the state. He went on to have a great career in the NHL. Billy Thayer was the leader, but we also had guys like Charlie Peterson and Steve Polsfuss.” In the state tournament, which was a single-class tournament at the time, Edina-East dominated. The Hornets trounced Bemidji 6-0 in the state championship game. “When I think back, it was really tough to go undefeated back then,” said Ikola. “We played a lot of good teams in the Lake Conference, and we had our annual games with Hill-Murray and Minneapolis Southwest.”

JOHN SHERMAN Edina Sports Editor

Edina-East’s closest call came in the Section 6 finals against the Hopkins Lindbergh Flyers, who were led by brothers Greg and Mitch Olson. “Lindbergh upset Edina-West to get to the championship game, and that affected our kids,” said Ikola. “We weren’t clicking, and Lindbergh took us to overtime.” The sense of urgency kicked in at that point. “I’m thinking, this is one of my best teams, and now our backs are against the wall,” said Ikola. His anxiety didn’t last long. “We scored right off the bat, about 30 seconds into overtime,” said Ikola. After beating St. Paul Harding 5-0 in the first round of the state tourney, Edina-East had one more scare. Henry Sibley led the Hornets 2-0

going into the third period in the semifinals. Then the Warriors got a goal early in the third period to make it a three-goal lead. “For most of the game, the puck just wasn’t going in the net for us,” said Ikola. “Then just like that, we scored five goals.” Edina-East started much faster in the championship game, blitzing Bemidji. Coupled with the five goals from the night before, Edina-East finished the tourney with 11 unanswered goals.

Words to live by Ikola said there was definitely some luck involved in the 1973-74 championship season. “In hockey, you can command a game, but you still have to put the puck in the net,” he said. “Over the course of a 24-game schedule, there’s a good chance somebody’s going to come up and bite you. You might run into a hot goalie or you might not get the bounces.” The wild card in Edina-East’s success was the emergence of goalie Jon

Hughes. “He was our Bantam A goalie the year before,” said Ikola. “With a young goalie, you realize that everybody has to play both ends of the rink. To Jon’s credit, he didn’t give up any cheap ones.”

Success continues Ikola is pleased with the success coach Curt Giles has had at Edina High. This week, Giles will coach in the state tournament for the sixth consecutive season. “The Lake Conference was tough when I coached,” said Ikola. “Nothing prepares you for the tournaments like competition in your own back yard. Curt had that competition this year with Eden Prairie, Minnetonka and Wayzata. Maybe Hopkins was down a little bit, but they always compete. “When I coached, the top six in our conference – Burnsville, Jefferson, Edina-East, Edina-West, Lindbergh and Richfield – could compete with any teams in the state. You get used to playing tough teams, and it really helps you later on.”

‘Flip’ rolls in the points for Edina boys basketball team Senior forward Philip “Flip” DeBerg of the Edina High boys basketball team loves to compete and win. This season, the 6-foot-3 two-year starter is second among Edina’s scorers behind junior guard Graham Woodward, and inch-for-inch, he is one of the top rebounders in the Lake Conference. DeBerg’s performance helped Edina to an 18-8 regular-season record. The Hornets earned a third seed for the Class 4A, Section 6 playoffs and played sixth seed Armstrong in the opening round March 6. The winner of that game will play second seed Minnetonka or seventh seed Minneapolis South in the section semifinals at 7:45 p.m. Friday, March 9, at Osseo High School. DeBerg said he likes Edina’s chances going into the playoffs, even though the Hornets would eventually have to knock off No. 1 Hopkins in order to win a state berth. “We can play with all the big teams,” DeBerg said recently. “We got off to a slow start with an 0-4 record, and then we won 14 in a row.” Midway through the winning streak, 6foot-9 junior center Reggie Lynch, the Jefferson High transfer, became eligible. That was good news for everyone on the team, and especially for DeBerg. “With Reggie in the lineup, I can guard someone my size instead of a center,” said DeBerg. “And on offense, I can play on the wing.” Edina head coach Pat Dorsey described DeBerg as “a joy to coach” during a recent interview. “Flip has played on varsity for three

years and he’s a two-year all-conference player,” Dorsey noted. “He’s a basketball player. He can play wing or post and even point guard. Flip is versatile and a smart kid.” The Hornets finished the regular season on a high note March 2, beating Eden Prairie 72-64 in a Lake Conference game. Woodward scored 25 points. DeBerg and senior guard Derek Hill each scored 13. The win gave Edina a second-place tie in the final Lake standings with Eden Prairie. Both clubs finished 4-4. During the second half of the conference schedule, Edina posted a 3-1 record. Hopkins took the Lake title with an 8-0 record while Minnetonka finished 3-5 and Wayzata was 1-7. Basketball has always been DeBerg’s No. 1 sport, although he also loves playing golf during the spring and summer. “I like the competitiveness and camaraderie of basketball, and winning is nice,” he said. DeBerg said the most fun he had this year was scoring 22 points in the Hornets’ 71-70 victory over Minnetonka. The senior forward has had several other 20-point nights and ranks 11th in Lake Conference scoring at 13.2 points per game. DeBerg’s philosophy on the court matches his personality off the court. “I always try to stay relaxed and make the best of it no matter what happens,” he said. When the 2011-12 season draws to a close, DeBerg’s basketball career will most likely end as well. “I will probably attend a big university next year,” he said. “And as of now, I would probably opt not to play basketball.”

“It is motivation, knowing we are not the favorite,” said Fidler. The Hornets are matched against an explosive Benilde-St. Margaret’s team in the opening round. BSM has rallied around the charisma of junior varsity player Jack Jablonski, who was paralyzed during a holiday tournament in December. Jablonski was on hand to watch BSM defeat Minnetonka in the Section 6AA title game Feb. 29. At the end of the night, the trophy rested in his lap. Louie Nanne, the grandson of former Minnesota Gopher and NHL player Lou Nanne, said, “The biggest adjustment at state is the size of the crowd. Some of our younger guys were in awe of the size of tonight’s crowd. At the X,

we’ll have three or four times the fans we had tonight.” Edina enters state play with a record of 23-5. Benilde-St. Margaret’s is 22-6. If the Hornets win their opener, they will face No. 1 seed Duluth East (27-1) or unseeded Lakeville South (20-8) in the semifinals at 8 p.m. Friday, March 9, at Xcel Energy Center. On the other side of the bracket, first-round games pit Maple Grove (242-2) against Hill-Murray (22-6) at 11 a.m. Thursday and Eagan (24-3-1) against Moorhead (21-6) at 1 p.m. The winners will play the first semifinal Friday at 6 p.m. The championship game will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at Xcel Energy Center.

Hockey FROM PAGE 27 They surged in the third period, scoring the last three goals of the game. Miguel Fidler knocked in a rebound, and then Connor Hurley’s second goal of the night gave Edina a 5-3 lead. Dylan Malmquist hit an open net for the final margin. Edina also had goals from Louie Nanne and Tyler Nanne. The Hornets outshot Burnsville 37-13. “One of our goals was to play solid defense against Burnsville’s big line,” said Giles. “We did a good job, forcing

them to the outside. This time of year, there’s nothing more fun than playing a well-coached team like Burnsville.” Giles added that he liked Edina’s balance in the section title game. “We know what we’re going to get from Connor Hurley and Dylan Malmquist,” he said. “Some of the other guys got involved tonight.” One of those guys was Fidler, a sophomore forward who is new to varsity this season. “Scoring that goal tonight was a dream come true,” said Fidler. “It was almost surreal … the greatest experience I could ever imagine.” Going into the state tournament as a fourth-seeded team is a challenge, Fidler said.
