Message from the Director General Last week, along with hundreds of colleagues, I attended the 19th ACI World Annual General Assembly and ACI Asia-Pacific Conference and Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur. This event was generously hosted by Malaysian Airports, and I would like to extend my sincerest thanks to Tan Sri Bashir and his team for their excellent hospitality and organization during this event. The theme of the Conference, Above the turbulence and sustaining business excellence, gave me the opportunity to give our members a frank account of the latest update on the industry situation which hints at the beginnings of an upswing from the doldrums of the past months. My aim was to clearly define our business needs and articulate “our vision which is one that is built on a safety culture and globally harmonized operations. … we need the ability to adapt and make business decisions without excessive regulation; the flexibility for greater commercial development and revenue diversification; and a strong voice for airports. We are moving to an era where airports are a force to be reckoned with in the industry.“ Our cornerstones of Safety, Security, Economic regulation, and Environment are as always our priority areas of focus. We talked about our efforts working with Public health authorities to both provide information to Members and to provide the airport perspective on proposed contingency planning. We talked about how technological advances can enable progress in all our priority concerns and how the knowledge transfer opportunities being provided with the expansion of ACI Training is a valuable resource in achieving high industry standards of excellence. Only though your participation can we build and maintain a strong and united voice for our industry. Long-term solutions involve sharing expert advice; making contact with government authorities on relevant issues; speaking at events; responding to ACI surveys; and continue to participate at our events. Think long-term, think sustainable: the excellence of your operations can best be enhanced through staying informed on best practices around the world and investment in your staff. Angela Gittens, Director General, ACI World
