Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland Term Two began with our annual ANZAC Day Commemoration Assembly held on the first day. This was the first time we recognised it outside, with over five hundred and fifty people in attendance. It is always a special event, with speakers from the Primary and the College. Thank you to Reuben Jacka from (Year Six) and Isha Takyar (Head Girl) plus Ethan Brown (Head Boy) as MC.

We also welcomed sixteen new students to our school this week: fifteen in the Primary School and one into the College. I know they have all had an excellent first week.

I would like to welcome Linda Storey, our new Enrolments Manager, to ACG Sunderland. Linda comes from a strong background in Office Administration, Customer Service and Event Management with her most recent role being involved with the New Zealander of the Year and Kiwibank Local Hero Awards. Linda enjoys spending time with her family on their lifestyle property with four dogs and forty odd chickens, and travelling.

This Saturday is our second Open Day for the year, and I know our new Enrolments Manager Mrs Linda Storey is also looking forward to meet new prospective parents.

If you have family and or friends that would like to take an opportunity to view the school, they are welcome to attend from 1.00pm to 4.00pm.

ANZAC dedication: Reading by Isha Takyar At this hour, on this day, ANZAC received its baptism of fire and became one of the immortal names in history.

We who are gathered here think of the comrades who went out with us to battle but did not return. We feel them still near us in spirit. We wish to be worthy of their great sacrifice. Let us, therefore, once again dedicate ourselves to the service of the ideals of which they died. As the dawn is even now about to pierce the night, so let the memory inspire us to work for the coming of the new light into the dark places of the world.

They shall not grow old, as we that are left to grow old; Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.

We gather here today to pay tribute to those who have served our countries in times of war, to those who gave their lives, to those who were wounded – and to those who returned home, many carrying with them for life the trauma of what they had experienced.

ANZAC Day commemorates the landings of Australian, British, French, Indian, and New Zealand forces on the Gallipoli Peninsula 106 years ago. It is also the day on which we honour the courage of all New Zealand and Australian service men and women deployed overseas since that time.

Throughout New Zealand, and Australia, at Gallipoli and in other places around the world, New Zealanders and Australians gathered to commemorate ANZAC Day. Today we stand in awe at the courage of our forebears – at Gallipoli, on the Somme, at Passchendaele, and in Palestine, before that in South Africa, in World War Two in Europe, the Middle East, and the Pacific, in Malaya, in Vietnam, and in many other deployments since that time.

It matters not on a day like this what our opinions were on one deployment or another. Today we recognise courage, endeavour, mateship, service, and sacrifice, and honour all who answered their nation’s call to serve.

In commemorating ANZAC Day as our national day of remembrance, we ensure that we never forget the loss of life, the tremendous suffering, the grief of the families at home, the children and young people who grew up without fathers, brothers, and uncles, the many widowed, and the impact of so many fallen on our communities and nations.

It is often said that our people went away as colonial soldiers in the service of the empire, and that those who returned came home as New Zealanders and Australians. The heavy price our peoples paid left a legacy which helps define our independent nations today – and built deep bonds between New Zealanders and Australians.

ANZAC Day is a day for reflection and remembrance. It is also a day for committing ourselves to working for a world where differences between nations can be resolved without resort to war. In this way we can best honour and pay tribute to the fallen and to those who have served.

The Marshmallow Challenge

Getting through term one certainly was not easy, always having the thought of tests and upcoming exams haunting us. Therefore, we had the “marshmallow challenge” in math class towards the end of our lessons.

Using 20 sticks of spaghetti, 2 marshmallows, some string and a roll of tape, students in groups of 4 have 20 minutes to build the tallest free-standing tower they can. And one of the marshmallows had to be placed on top of the structure.

My group, consisting of Anya, Yolanda, Anna-Maree, and I, immediately set to discussing our ideas. We eventually assigned everyone roles and began building. Upon agreeing that the base is the most important part, we spent more than half of our time just on that, refining and reinforcing. We watched as all the other groups built theirs up, higher and higher, while ours was merely half their height. After time was up, we saw many groups’ towers collapse, and eventually came to the realization that we had won! With 58cm, our tower was by far the tallest and sturdiest amongst all the classes that participated, from year seven all the way to AS level. Each of us in our team won house points. Moral of the story is slow and steady wins the race!

Orienteering Sprint Series Every year, Lactic Turkey Events holds a sprint series for orienteering on Mondays for students to test not only their map reading skills, but also their stamina and endurance. This year, ACG Sunderland sent a group of six students to compete, but due to COVID-19 and lockdowns, it was postponed and two of the usual five events were cancelled.

The events were held around West Auckland. The high schools that competed include: Rutherford College, Henderson High School, and Avondale College.

How the games worked were: they were controls (checkpoints) scattered around the area you had to find and check into these controls with sport ID cards that were produced by Lactic Turkey Events and continue around the track with your team.

After the series ended, points were added up and top students from each zone were selected to compete in the Auckland Regional Finals. Three students from Sunderland were chosen, setting off to two universities on Sunday 11th April. There is a big difference to orienteering at high schools as compared to at universities, especially in the finals. Not only are the finals much more competitive, but everyone there is an experienced orienteer, many of which having competed in the competition before. The second difference is the difficulty of the course. Although it was not a longer track it was certainly more difficult to navigate. With buildings being tightly packed, it was hard to find many of the controls; and quite a few of them were hidden in corners.

Overall, we enjoyed the experience and opportunity. And we, from the orienteering group thank Mr Gottard for transporting and organising the team. We would also like to thank our parents for supporting us and transporting the three qualifiers to the finals on Sunday. But most of all, congratulations and thank you to all the students who took part.

Maybe next year we will have a bigger team to compete against the other schools.

Athletics Day Athletics day. Yes, the time had come once again for Sunderland. To walk down to the Trust Stadium and run for those precious house points and fighting for a chance to be announced the next champion for the year. Whilst having fun of course!

This is an annual house event with a variety of field events, track events and with the last showdown of a relay race.

When you take part in the track or field events you receive house points. If you get a standing in these events, you gain extra points. In the end, the house who has accumulated the most points are declared that year’s champion.

The track events started a while after we (my form class) arrived at the stadium. First it was the under 12, 100m races.

Then the under 14, under 16 and under 19 races began and soon we started the 200m races. The cycle continued until we reached the 800m race. This race is two laps around the entire track. Still, this is not the longest race. Every year there is an optional 1500m race. The students who sign up for this race wake up earlier than the rest of us to go to the stadium to run even more laps on the track.

After these events finished, we had a short lunch break and then the field events began. There are four field events: long jump, high jump, shotput, and discus. These events take 45 minutes each so by the time they finished, it is nearly the end of the day and time for the relays.

There were four relays this year: the primary house relay, the lower college house relay, the upper college house relay, and the infamous student vs teacher relay. It was quite interesting watching the relay, cheering on the people running for your house and anticipating who was going to win.

After the student vs teacher relay finished (which we, the students, obviously won), we slowly started to pack up and returned to our school for ten more minutes until the end of the school day. As we wait for the results, I hope that today will be one of the highlights of the year, whether you won all your races or lost them all.

Studying Tips for the Upcoming Exams!

Studying is hard and tiresome, but studying is important. It will help you be whatever you want in the future. Here is how to study faster and efficiently.

When you are studying do not continue for prolonged periods of time because you will not retain any information.

Scientist recommend revising for 30 minutes then having a 5–10-minute break.

Motivation is key for the very same reason as stated above if you are lacking motivation, you will tire your brain from trying to juggle keeping yourself going and studying at the same time. One way to motivate yourself is to have a stimulated brain just before you get cracking: wake up 30 minutes earlier so you can work out and have a shower. Due to the work out, you will have endorphins that will keep you happy throughout your day. When you are feeling tired, and you want to have a jolt of that instant wake up jump in the shower and a minute before you hop out turn on the colder water.

When you are making a study plan you want to focus on your core subjects so English, Math, Science and Social Science when you have those you want to sort them into an order from hardest to easiest and then you focus on the harder ones. In this way you spend more time studying for those subjects.
