January 2016 Greetings!

In This Issue

How did Bruce Lee die? Since this legendary film and martial arts hero passed away,

A Medicolegal Examination

his death has been surrounded with mystery. Some spectators blamed Chinese herbs on his death. Others blamed a martial arts technique said to kill victims after a certain amount of time has lapsed. Some reached for connections between overexercising, drug and alcohol use, or even a potential eating disorder. In this issue, Dr.

matter. He paints a clear picture of the events and conditions leading to Bruce Lee's

death, and proposes a theory for what actually happened. Then, Dr. Kathryn Seifert, PhD, CFC, looks into the effects of conflict on children growing up in and around warzones. Most people are aware of the physical dangers of war, and the toll that war can take. Seifert looks into the equally devastating psychological effects that war has on youth. And lastly, Dr. Gerald Cooke, PhD, DACFE, brings us into the realm of

Warzones: The Effects on Children Caught In The Middle Of Conflict By:

Dr. Kathryn Seifert, PhD, CFC Traumatic events in childhood can, if not handled effectively by adults, interfere with the development of basic coping skills (van der Kolk B. M., 2006), brain structures, and neurotransmitters (van der Kolk B. A., 2003). Additionally, aversive childhood experiences can lead to negative outcomes in adulthood, such as mental illness, substance abuse, and severe physical illnesses (Centers for Disease Control, 2006). Children living in a war zone have aversive and traumatic experiences. The sad reality is that it is happening today and every day in the Middle East and Africa, from Syria to Gaza and the Democratic Republic of Congo to Mali.

This article focuses on how psychological-neuropsychological testing can be utilized in capital cases. Statutory and case law provide the legal parameters regarding the application of test findings to assessment of the mitigating factors a jury or judge must consider in determining whether to impose the death sentence. The article also discusses what background records and information are needed and what steps must be taken in arranging evaluations in prison settings where capital defendants are housed. The various tests are described. Two case studies illustrate how the

CE Credits for ACFEI Members ACFEI Members Eligible to Receive Continuing Education Credits Through DUI Seminars with Dave Cox Dave Cox is the owner and operator of Your DUI Pro, which is located in Middleton, Idaho. Mr. Cox investigates criminal cases and is an Expert DUI Defense Analyst and Consultant. Mr. Cox is a decorated former police officer and he devoted most of his time as a police officer to DUI enforcement. He has performed the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests on thousands of people. Mr. Cox arrested over 1,000 people for DUI throughout his career, with over 200 arrests for DUI - Drugs. He was named the 2003 State DUI Enforcement Officer of the Year. Knowing this information, Mr. Cox decided to leave law enforcement so he could teach attorneys across the United States how to identify drivers who are not guilty of DUI and teach attorneys how to effectively win these cases. Mr. Cox was trained as a certified Drug Recognition Expert. He was certified in the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration DWI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing and was also trained as a certified operator of both the Intoxilyzer 5000 and the Intoxilyzer 8000. Mr. Cox has also received training, from a breath testing expert, on each of the commonly used breath testing machines. Mr. Cox was a regular speaker at Victim Impact Panels and taught DUI Detection classes at the Citizen's Police Academy. Mr. Cox testified in hundreds of DUI trials and hearings as an officer and has testified many times as a DUI Defense Expert. Mr. Cox is the author of How to Fight a DUI Arrest and he now consults with and assists attorneys across the United States in effectively and efficiently investigating, preparing, and defending DUI cases. Mr. Cox has personally trained thousands of attorneys across the United States. This includes Defense Attorneys, Prosecutors, Judges, and Police Officers.
