Sycamore Soccer Season outlook P

reseason camp always brings an extra level of excitement and for the Indiana State women’s soccer program, under the direction of third-year head coach Julie Hanley, the Sycamores felt it even more this year as they look to continue make strides inside the Missouri Valley Conference this fall. The team opened the season with a mystic fog in the air while the team enjoyed a highly successful fitness test on the opening day of practice back on August 1. “I told the group that this year we had the most athletes pass the fitness test of any season that I have been here,” coach Hanley said. “It is a testament to the work that the team put in over the summer. For us as a staff, we are very excited to get going especially after seeing the work that the team has put in to get ready.” That carried over into an impressive display during 11 vs. 11 drills as most of the team members saw their first extensive action on the brand new Memorial Stadium FieldTurf. “It was great to be able to come out on opening day and play ‘11v11’ and there were some nerves out there,” coach Hanley said. “But that’s why I wanted to come out and play with full sides -- to hopefully get everyone comfortable right away.” ISU welcomed back a strong nucleus of returnees, including senior Caitlyn Eddy who led the team with six assists last year and logged over 1,300 minutes of action after transferring into the program from Arkansas-Little Rock. Senior Katie Wells is back for her

senior campaign after scoring six goals last season to pace the Sycamores and was a Second Team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection as well as a MVC Scholar-Athlete Team pick. “We are going to be really good offensively,” coach Hanley commented. “We added a couple of attackers that will have the ability to get in behind. We are going to compete really well. This is a good group of athletes who believe in our culture which is geared towards competition and it just gets better everyday.” The Sycamores will be tested early and often this year beginning with an exhibition contest one week from today at Purdue. Indiana State will also play their first eight regular season contests on the road before opening up at home on Sunday, September 9 against Rose-Hulman at 3 pm (ET). Western Michigan and Chicago State will come calling the next weekend before Missouri Valley Conference play begins at Evansville on Saturday, September 22. ISU will host Loyola, Northern Iowa and Drake this year in conference play while they will also travel to Missouri State, Illinois State and Evansville. The top six schools advance to the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament while the final four will converge upon Chicago on November 2-4 for the semifinals and championship match and a berth into the NCAA Tournament. “It is a bit of stretch to open the season with nine games on the road,” coach Hanley commented. “But once we get to conference play, we are going to be road tested. Anything that we are going to see from teams in conference play won’t be anything that we haven’t seen in non-conference play. It will be tough, but we are excited for it and we will be up for the challenge. We will see a Big Ten team on the road early and will be tested by a couple of MAC teams so we are going to have to be at our best everyday.” In goal this year for the Sycamores will Hannah Sullivan, who started 10 matches last year and recorded 43 saves and was credited with four victories. Maya Jamison and freshman Sophia Grenz will also battle for time in goal for the Sycamores this year. Thanks to the support of the university as well as loyal donors through the Elevate campaign, the Sycamores will practice and play their home games on a brand new state of the art FieldTurf surface which was installed during the spring. This morning’s workout was the first for the program on the new surface and the Sycamores will make their public debut in the home opener on September 9. “This is the really the first time that we have been out here on the new surface as a team,” coach Hanley said. “It is phenomenal the work that was done out here and the commitment that the university and athletic department put in to make this happen. It is huge for our program to be able to come out and practice and play on a surface that is as good as what we now have.” The Sycamores regular season opener is set for Friday, August 17 when they travel to Northern Kentucky at 7 pm (ET).

Head Coach Julie Hanley Kansas, 2010 t third season at Indiana State

Julie Hanley is in her third season as the head coach of Indiana State women’s soccer. Hanley was announced as ISU’s third head women’s soccer coach by Director of Athletics Sherard Clinkscales on July 7, 2016. “It was clear to me that Julie Hanley has the energy and experience to lead our program to conference titles and NCAA Tournament berths,” Clinkscales said. “She will embrace the competitive challenges ahead while continuing the excellent academic achievements and community service efforts of our student athletes.”

and tied for sixth in shutouts (six). Clark, who Hanley recruited and coached for four years, ended her career as the winningest goalkeeper in program history (36 victories) and was tops in the record books in career shutouts (26) and third in career saves (321). Iowa earned the NSCAA Ethics and Sportsmanship Award in 2016 and six student-athletes garnered Academic All-Big Ten recognition. In 2014, Hanley helped lead Iowa to a 14-7-1 overall and a 7-5-1 Big Ten record to notch the program’s third top-five league finish since 2011. The seven Big Ten victories tied the program record for Big Ten wins in a single season and the 14 wins were the second-most in school history. After entering the Big Ten Tournament as the No. 5 seed, Iowa posted victories over No. 23 Rutgers and Northwestern to advance to the tournament championship game for a second straight season. Two seniors – Cloe Lacasse and Melanie Pickert – capped their Hawkeye careers with first-team All-Big Ten and first-team allregion honors. They were the first pair in school history to earn firstteam all-conference honors in the same season and the first two players to garner first-team all-region recognition.

During his time at Indiana State, Hanley led the Sycamores to a berth into the 2016 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament where the team advanced all the way to the semifinals against host Illinois State. The Sycamores garnered a thrilling win over Drake in the MVC Tournament opening round as they downed the Bulldogs in penalty kicks inside Memorial Stadium. Academics and community service are a hallmark of the Sycamore program under the direction of Hanley as they have picked up a pair of Sycamore Cup awards which goes to the highest achieving academic team on campus each year. The Sycamore women’s soccer program has garnered the highest team grade point average in both years under Hanley’s leadership. Hanley came to Indiana State from Iowa, where she has spent four seasons as an assistant coach. In her four seasons with the Hawkeyes, the program recorded three of the top win totals in school history. In that same time frame, Iowa amassed 48 victories, advanced to one NCAA Tournament, three Big Ten Tournaments and made two Big Ten Tournament title game appearances. During the 2015 season, Hanley tutored Hannah Clark as she led the Big Ten in saves (105), saves per game (5.83),

5

Sycamore Soccer Defensively, the Hawkeyes finished 2014 with a school-record 14 shutouts – its second-straight season breaking the record – in 22 games to rank 20th nationally with a .545 shutout percentage. Iowa’s defense was also in the top-35 in the country in saves percentage (31st, .838) and goals against average (35th, .754). Academically, the Hawkeyes garnered the NSCAA Team Academic Award for an eighth straight season and nine soccer student-athletes garnered Academic All-Big Ten honors. Seniors Caitlin Brown and Emily Scott were also received Scholar All-Region recognition. In 2013, Hanley helped Iowa to its best season in program history, which culminated with its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Hawkeyes finished the year with a 15-7-1 record, the most victories all-time in school history. After tying for fifth place in the Big Ten regular season standings, the Hawkeyes posted the first two postseason victories in program history at the Big Ten Tournament as the No. 8 seed. Iowa posted back-to-back shutouts over No. 7 Michigan and No. 20 Penn State before dropping a 1-0 decision to No. 18 Nebraska in the Big Ten Tournament championship game. The Hawkeyes earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament, where it dropped a road game at No. 23 Notre Dame, 4-1. Iowa earned three victories against ranked competition in 2013 – the most such wins in school history. The triumph over No. 7 Michigan was the highest ranked foe a Hawkeye team has defeated all-time. In Hanley’s first season in Iowa City, the Hawkeyes finished with a 12-6-3 record in 2012, tying the then school-record for wins. Iowa went undefeated in nonconference play and qualified for the Big Ten Tournament. Hanley coached Iowa’s goalkeeper rotation that earned four weekly conference awards. Iowa ranked third in the Big Ten in goals allowed, goals against average, saves and shutouts. Both of Iowa’s goalkeepers ranked within the top-three of the league in save percentage as well as top-five in goals against average. Hanley joined the Iowa coaching staff after serving as a graduate assistant at Illinois State for two seasons. She was responsible for training and developing goalkeepers, while also assisting with defenders. Hanley was active in recruiting, organizing team travel and assisted in numerous

6

administrative activities within the soccer program. In her two seasons at Illinois State, the Redbirds posted a 22-132 record, including a Missouri Valley Conference regular season championship, State Farm MVC Tournament title and NCAA Tournament berth in 2011. Hanley was a member of the 2011 MVC Coaching Staff of the Year and mentored the 2011 MVC Defensive Player of the Year, Natalie McCabe. The Redbirds also defeated 10thranked Milwaukee, 3-1, in 2011, marking the program’s first-ever win over a top-10 opponent. Hanley was a goalkeeper at the University of Kansas from 2005-09, serving as team captain in her final three seasons. She ranks second in career wins, shutouts and goals against average in KU history. She was a two-time First-Team Academic All-Big 12 selection and earned four weekly conference and TopDrawerSoccer.com awards in her career. After finishing her eligibility at Kansas, Hanley remained in the program as an intern. She maintained and updated recruiting programs while organizing practices and game files. Hanley was a member of the Dynamo F.C. club prior to her collegiate career, leading the team to a pair of Indiana state championships. Hanley, an Indianapolis native, earned her Bachelor of Arts in sports management and a minor in business from Kansas in May, 2010. She earned her Master of Science degree in kinesiology and recreation and recreation administration from Illinois State in May, 2012.

Sycamore Soccer the missouri valley conference The Missouri Valley Conference, the nation’s secondoldest NCAA Division I conference, continues to be a leader in college athletics and is one of the nation’s most progressive conferences, celebrating its 112th season in 2018-19. Last season marked the beginning of the latest chapter for the Conference, as Valparaiso University became the league’s 34th all-time member on July 1, 2017. Missouri State highlighted the 2017-18 campaign, as for just the fifth time since joining the Conference in 1990, MSU won the league’s coveted All-Sports Championship Trophy. Missouri State earned a league-best five regular-season titles, and it also won post-season MVC tournament titles in women’s soccer, women’s tennis, volleyball and baseball. Southern Illinois was second, followed by Illinois State, Indiana State and UNI. The Valley brand remains very strong, both regionally and nationally, and the great athletic tradition of The Valley remains a compelling force in recruiting student-athletes and in marketing all the MVC programs. League members have worked together to focus on common goals and objectives, placing a high value on league harmony, while continuing to invest in athletic programs to compete at the highest level. Men’s basketball continues to be the engine that drives Valley athletic programs. In 2018, Loyola Chicago represented the Conference in the NCAA Tournament, reaching the Final Four in San Antonio. The Conference has combined for 17 wins in the NCAA Tournament in the past six seasons, earning multiple bids four times since 2012. Recent success in resurrecting the challenge series with the Mountain West Conference, and the increased opportunities for MVC teams to participate in ESPN’s early-season multi-team events and in other elite tournaments, have added strong opponents and more national television exposure to the non-conference scheduling mix. The State Farm MVC Men’s Basketball Championship – affectionately known as Arch Madness - continues to be a spectacular showcase for the league, and the MVC has extended the tournament agreement with Enterprise Center (formerly known as Scottrade Center) that will keep Arch Madness in St. Louis through at least 2020. During the 2011 MVC Championship, the league surpassed 1 million in total attendance for the event, now in its 29th year in the Gateway City. The tournament, in 2016, celebrated its 40th anniversary overall. While the success of men’s basketball has received the greatest attention, the overall performance of league teams in virtually every sport continues to raise the national profile of the Conference. In women’s soccer, Drake won the regular-season title with a near-perfect 6-0-1 record. But Missouri State, which finished in second place during the regular season, defeated UNI, 1-0, in the tournament title match to earn the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA bid for MSU marked its first after a 17-season drought – and was the program’s second tournament appearance since its inception in 1996. The summer of 2015 yielded two major announcements on the TV front, as ESPN and the Missouri Valley Conference announced a 10-year extension to their current media rights agreement that will provide increased coverage of Conference events across ESPN platforms through 2023-24. As

part of the deal – which continues a business relationship that began in 1986 – ESPN, the Missouri Valley Conference and its 10 institutions will work jointly to develop in-house production capabilities at each campus that will provide significant national coverage for multiple sports on ESPN3 or ESPN+ and hands-on educational opportunities for students. As a result, ESPN3 or ESPN+ will showcase a minimum of 820 events a year (a minimum of 70 men’s basketball) in the final six years of the agreement on the league’s co-branded digital network (The Valley on ESPN3 or ESPN+). Additionally, CBS Sports and the MVC are in a multi-year agreement to televise Valley basketball games on the CBS Television Network and CBS Sports Network. The deal, which began in 2015-16 and continues through 2023-24, is through a sublicense agreement with ESPN. CBS Sports has televised the men’s basketball tournament final since 2006. In 2010, The Valley took a major step toward ensuring current revenues in television media and tournament sponsorship sales would be guaranteed in future years when it announced a 10-year partnership with Learfield Sports. The Jefferson City, Missouri-based company has the exclusive sales and marketing rights to MVC assets that include championships and television advertising. In June 2016, the MVC and Learfield Sports extended that partnership through 2023-24, concurrent with the league’s contract with ESPN. The seeds for the creation of the Conference were planted by eight administrators representing five institutions, who met at the Midland Hotel in Kansas City, Mo., on Jan. 12, 1907. The five schools which formed the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association were Washington University of St. Louis, and the state universities of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. Two months after the initial meeting, two more schools -Drake University and Iowa State College -- were admitted.   In the fall of 1907, basketball became the first competitive sport. Today, the Missouri Valley Conference sponsors the following sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country and track & field (indoor and outdoor), men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, women’s swimming and diving, women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball. This season, the league will conduct its 108th outdoor track and field championship, its 65th baseball tournament, and its 81st golf championship for the men. Those programs, plus other current sponsored sports of cross country (60 years), indoor track (68), men’s soccer (28), women’s soccer (22), and swimming and diving (25), have helped solidify The Valley as one of the nation’s most respected conferences.   Athletic accomplishments include four NCAA national basketball championships, 18 trips to the NCAA Final Four, a 1989 national baseball championship and 19 College World Series qualifiers. The league owns a total of 32 post-season national team championships, including two men’s basketball crowns in 2015 (Evansville-CIT; Loyola-CBI). In 2001, Missouri State added to The Valley women’s accomplishments, as the Lady Bears advanced to the Women’s Basketball Final Four in St. Louis. Creighton

(2004) and Missouri State (2005) have claimed national championships (WNIT) in women’s basketball. MSU also has a 1992 NCAA Women’s Final Four appearance, and Creighton (2003), Drake (1999) and Illinois State (2009) have made semifinal trips to the WNIT postseason tournament.   Indeed, the inclusion of women’s programs under The Valley banner has provided a boost. The Gateway Collegiate Athletic Conference -- which began in 1982 -- merged with The Missouri Valley Conference and was unveiled as part of the new conference on July 1, 1992. During the 2017-18 academic year, the Missouri Valley Conference and its member institutions conducted a year-long celebration of the first 25 years of women’s sports competition in the MVC; focusing attention on current women student-athletes in the Conference and honoring MVC history and the pioneers of women’s athletics. Top vote-getters in each sport included Rachel Tejada of Illinois State (soccer); Sue Daggett Miller of Illinois State (cross country); Molly O’Brien of UNI (volleyball); Jackie Stiles of Missouri State (basketball); Sherry Zhang of Southern Illinois (swimming & diving); Danielle Lemek of Bradley (golf); Liina Suurvarik of Illinois State (tennis); Tara Oltman of Creighton (softball); Holli Hyche of Indiana State (track); and Kylie Hutson of Indiana State (field).   While the inclusion of women’s sports under a comprehensive athletic umbrella is a recent development in the league’s storied history, over the years, Valley studentathletes and coaches have become household names during the league’s illustrious history, both during their collegiate careers and, for some, professional careers.   In fact, The Valley began honoring that tradition in the summer of 1997, when the Conference began its athletics Hall of Fame. Hersey Hawkins of Bradley, Larry Bird of Indiana State, Wes Unseld of Louisville, Coach Henry Iba of Oklahoma State, Dave Stallworth of Wichita State, Ed Macauley of Saint Louis, and Oscar Robertson of Cincinnati were members of the initial induction class. Currently, more than 100 former players, coaches and alums dot the league’s Hall of Fame. League members include Bradley, Drake, Evansville, Illinois State, Indiana State, Loyola Chicago, Missouri State, Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois and Valparaiso. Central Arkansas is an affiliate member in men’s soccer; Dallas Baptist is an affiliate member for baseball; Arkansas-Little Rock is an affiliate member in women’s swimming and diving; and Stony Brook competes as an affiliate member in women’s tennis.
