MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRPERSON Dear Colleagues, 2020 was an unprecedented year for our industry, our city, our country, our world – and for the ACE Mentor Program of Greater NY. When the pandemic seemed to be heading to New York City, our organization immediately began strategizing ways to continue the last three months of our 2019-2020 season. We realized that students’ lives would be uprooted in ways we could not fully imagine. ACE GNY is a career readiness program which focuses primarily on urban students, introducing them to the careers in our industry and preparing them for college. But ACE GNY is also an organization that mentors students, building strong ties between our mentors and our students. In the midst of chaos and fear, we wanted ACE GNY to be a place of consistency. We transitioned quickly to remote mentoring and finished our 2019-2020 season in a strong fashion, hosting virtual final presentations and witnessing how much the students learned even while hunkered down in their homes last Spring. The summer gave way to the realization that “normal” was still on hold, and we prepared for a fully virtual season for 2020-2021. We did not know what this would mean in terms of our student and mentor recruitment – but we are thrilled to say that ACE GNY is strong and we have over 1,300 students and more than 600 mentors for this season. None of this would be possible without the generous support of the sponsors of this Journal and the ACE GNY community. We thank you for your continued support of, and trust in, ACE GNY.

John Pierce Chairperson, ACE Mentor Program of Greater NY Senior Vice President, Asset Services, Rockefeller Group

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Friends, I would first like to thank all of the incredible supporters of the ACE Mentor Program of Greater NY, particularly those sponsors listed in this Journal. To say that the past year has been challenging for all of us, would be an understatement. We know that businesses have not operated in their traditional capacity, people are overwhelmed with juggling work and home, and uncertainty was always looming. Yet, through the generosity of this industry, you continued to support ACE GNY both financially and with volunteer mentors. This support not only sustained us, it allowed us to be creative and enhance our programming. Through the incredible commitment and leadership shown by our Board of Directors and our mentors, we transitioned to virtual programming in March 2020 and were able to complete our season with virtual final presentations in May 2020. Over the summer, we focused on developing resources to help our mentors continue to mentor virtually for the 2020-2021 season. These resources, which were developed by our ACE GNY alumni currently in college, will also be utilized in-classroom at several NYC Public High Schools — a first for ACE GNY! And our students, who have primarily been relegated to virtual school, log back on each week to attend their ACE GNY sessions to eagerly learn about the A-E-C industry, career opportunities and gain invaluable skills. It has taken the entire ACE GNY family — Sponsors, Board Members, Mentors, Alumni, Students, and Staff — to get us here today. But we remain committed and strong and look forward to our 2021 final presentations, to our graduating seniors entering college, and to alumni entering the industry. I thank you all for your support always, but especially this year!

Sue Veres Royal Executive Director, ACE Mentor Program of Greater NY

OVERVIEW, HISTORY, CONTEXT

T

he ACE Mentor Program of Greater NY (ACE GNY) was the founding affiliate of the ACE Mentor Program. The program was founded in 1994 by leading architects, contractors, engineers, and owners. In its first year the program was comprised of three teams of 90 students and industry professionals from 17 mentoring firms. Today ACE is a national program. The Greater NY affiliate has grown from 3 teams to 44, from 17 firms to over 130, and from 90 students to over 1,300. Nationally, ACE reaches more than 13,000 students and 4,100 mentors throughout 37 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. The program has had incredible success in creating a solid, and much needed, diverse pipeline for the design and construction industry—95% of ACE graduates enroll in higher education and almost 70% enter majors linked to the design and construction industry.

12

HOW ACE TRADITIONALLY WORKS

A

CE GNY teams are made up of 15-30 students from different high schools throughout the five boroughs of NYC, Westchester, and Long Island, and 10-15 mentors representing the design and construction industry. Mentors guide students through the fundamentals of architecture, engineering, and construction management, while also developing a pseudo-design project that the students present to family and peers at the end of the season. ACE GNY teams meet after school for at least 15 sessions. To get better insight into the industry, teams meet at design and construction offices and gain access to behind-the-scenes tours of construction sites.

13

THE PANDEMIC STRIKES MARCH TO MAY 2020

A

CE GNY is an extremely social, “ It’s one of the things I genuinely look hands-on program. Students commute forward to nowadays. ACE is fun and from school to their team’s meeting engaging compared to the many other locations at a design and construction countless hours that I’m stuck behind a firm, go on field trips to other firms’ offices and screen. The online structure has made construction sites, and participate in hands-on it easier for me as I don’t have to put activities using the same pool of materials. anyone at risk and I don’t have to worry about being late or missing meetings In March 2020, it was becoming clear that because I can attend from home.” the program would have to cease in-person Tahmeed Khan, meetings and transition to remote learning Brooklyn Technical High School, Team 12 to complete the remainder of the program. Teams were able to transition seamlessly and ACE GNY Staff contacted GoToMeeting, a continue working on their final design projects, video conference hosting company, to see and successfully presented their projects to what help they could offer the program. parents, teachers, board members, and staff in In response, GoToMeeting donated 53 free accounts—51 for teams to use, and 2 for staff. May 2020.

ACE GNY staff organized webinars to help mentors transition to virtual learning. These webinars were focused on teaching techniques to keep students engaged, various apps, software, and other resources that allowed for collaborative work between students and mentors. These enabled students to continue learning the technical skills at the heart of the ACE Mentor Program.

ACE GNY is extremely proud of the hard work of mentors in transitioning to remote learning for over 1,200 high school students, as well as their ability to meet the challenges of the pandemic in their careers. Many ACE GNY firms worked on field hospitals, produced personal protective equipment, and updated ventilation systems to stop the spread of COVID-19. The pandemic response showed students firsthand the breadth, generosity, and perseverance of the design and construction field.

APRIL

SUMMER 2020 ACE GNY GETS CREATIVE

T

he new remote world allowed ACE GNY to be creative during the Summer of 2020. ACE GNY received a grant from the NYC Department of Education Career and Technical Education (CTE) Office to develop a Virtual Resource Library featuring resources for the core disciplines within the A-E-C industry. ACE GNY Alumni, with guidance from mentors, were tapped to film 15- to 20-minute videos introducing the disciplines, as well as short hands-on exercises. The Library also includes office tours and behind-the-scenes construction site tours. In Spring 2021, ACE GNY staff will do a teachers’ training showing how to use the curriculum in over 25 NYC CTE high schools. Team Leaders were also given access to the Virtual Resource Library to use in mentoring sessions. In Fall 2020, ACE GNY kicked off the program remotely for over 1,300 students across 44 mentor teams. Teams are meeting remotely and will present their final presentations in June 2021.

“ During ACE remote sessions, my experience

has been very good. I feel as if the mentors are more patient with us and maintain positive attitudes, which make me feel more welcomed in the sessions.”

Sha-Dania Peterson, City Polytechnic High School of Engineering, Architecture, and Technology, Team 48

“ I’ve enjoyed the flexibility in the sessions. The mentor activities are proactive as well as diverse. As each session progresses, the mentors make sure to inform us, be patient, question our thinking and so much more. This opportunity has allowed me to have a great time which is more than what I was expecting.” Yadhira Morocho, Newtown High School, Team 43

OUR STUDENTS

A

CE GNY students come from diverse life experiences and academic backgrounds. For many students, this is their first time learning about the industry and interacting with a career professional. Students who participate in ACE GNY learn firsthand what to expect if interested in entering this field. Students meet with not only career professionals, but students from other high schools as well as ACE GNY alumni who are in college and can share their advice. Mentors assist and guide students with applications for college, scholarship, and internships.

“ ACE made me feel like I had a place in the world. It opened my eyes up to so many opportunities and created a safe place for my creative side to run free.” Raina Alam, Brooklyn Latin School, Team 39

88% At its core, ACE GNY is a mentorship program to prepare students to enter the industry, but it is not all lectures! Mentors develop fun activities, such as LEGO building competitions and games of telephone with blueprints, to keep students entertained and interested in this field. The structure of ACE GNY is unlike anything students experience in high school – groupwork is crucial, and all students’ ideas are welcomed as they tackle new projects.

OUR MENTORS

A

CE GNY Mentors are vital to accomplishing the program’s mission. Mentors have the challenging but rewarding responsibility to pique students’ interest and keep them focused and supported on their career path. Along with industry knowledge, mentors share their diverse personal challenges to show students the different pathways life can take. In addition to having a full-time job, mentors develop engaging curriculum and fun hands-on activities for fresh ears, learn classroom management skills, and other techniques to keep high school students interested. After completing ACE, students sustain the strong connections they have with their mentors. There are many instances of a “cycle of mentorship”, where students who went through ACE GNY graduate college, enter the industry, and come back as mentors themselves. “ Mentoring is always a welcome break in my week, full of youthful energy and enthusiasm. It is rewarding to help students on their way to becoming career professionals. But being a mentor also includes seemingly simple things like offering college advice, or giving suggestions for which museum to visit that weekend.”

Proud to support the ACE Mentor Program Arup aims to cultivate diverse and inclusive environments, and drive real change in our industry to better represent and serve all communities. This work includes encouraging more people from diverse backgrounds to pursue education and careers in the architecture, construction, and engineering industry. We support these efforts by participating in the ACE Mentor Program, with volunteer mentors engaging with students throughout duration of the program. In addition, Arup contributes to an ACE Mentor Program scholarship fund that provides scholarships for students to pursue an education in engineering. This commitment to the communities in which we work is at the heart of Arup’s mission to make equity, social justice, and inclusion a fundamental part of how we shape a better world. www.arup.com

“We don’t see many communities reflected in the ACE fields, which means that the industry is missing out on the talent and perspectives of many underrepresented groups… The ACE Mentor Program is helping rewrite this status quo by encouraging minority students to pursue a STEM education. The goal is to create a more diverse workforce, which has statistically been proven to be better for business and project outcomes.” Jamie Simpson, ACE mentor Infrastructure engineer, Arup NY

“As a mentor firm, Arup’s direct impact can be felt in financial support and student engagement. Many of the students have also expressed that their participation in ACE gave them a lot of confidence that engineering was the right career path for them.”
