Legalities of Steroid Use There are also legal ramifications associated with AAS use. Since early 1991, AAS and related compounds have been classified as drugs controlled by the Food and Drug Administration. These drugs have a high potential for physical and psychological dependence as well as their catabolic effects on various body systems. Transportation or distribution of these agents is punishable by fines of up to $500,000.00 and/or a prison sentence of up to 15 years. The military, as well as most sports governing bodies, (IOC, USOC, NCAA, NFL), ban the use of AAS. Users who are detected using such agents face significant penalties.
