Liebe Buchhändler*innen, Bücherfreund*innen und Kunstbegeisterte,
Dear booksellers, book lovers, and art enthusiasts,
Art functions not only as a productive source of friction for addressing pressing contemporary issues; it also reveals perspectives that can transcend the status quo. A glance at the history of art shows how art has often been able to express the things that could not yet be spoken.
As such, it goes without saying that one of the great strengths of contemporary art is that it no longer uses controversial political issues as mere thematic cues, but instead proactively reflects on its own involvement in those issues. More than ever, the focus is on the social context in which art is produced, exhibited, and received. This circumstance is also reflected—in one way or another—in the publications included in our Spring Program. In Exhibition Politics: Die documenta und die DDR (Exhibition Politics. The documenta and the GDR), the documenta Archive revisits an important aspect of the art history of the two Germanys. How was this major exhibition received in the GDR and, conversely, how did the curators and artists view their socialist counterparts? In addition to academic contributions on the historical context, this volume offers a comprehensive collection of documents, artist portraits, and picture series that will serve as an indispensable starting point for future discussions on the topic. Contemporary And (C&) is an international platform for dialogue on contemporary art, with a special focus on Africa and topics relating to the black diaspora. Essays, columns, reviews, and interviews are regularly published in four languages in magazines and online. The book celebrating the platform’s tenth anniversary brings together key texts on central issues and debates from the first decade and thus makes a significant contribution to the understanding of current discourses within contemporary art. At the beginning of 2024, the Berlinische Galerie will be showing the first retrospective of Hans Uhlmann’s work in fifty years. Imprisoned by the Gestapo in 1933, during his incarceration the Berlin sculptor developed filigree sculptures made of wire. He continued to work with new materials and production methods and, throughout his career, maintained his interest in the constructive process and the interactions between form and space. The catalogue accompanying the exhibition facilitates the first comprehensive appraisal of Uhlmann’s work. We are also looking forward to many more inspiring publications in the field of contemporary art and photography, which we hope will inspire contemplation and reflection, as well as discussion and active involvement. We hope you enjoy them and wish you a very healthy and happy start to the New Year.

In ihrer Studie Exhibition Politics. East German art critic Lothar Lang described the 1959 documenta as a “monster show”— a judgment that reflects the cultural-political tensions between the two German states. What image did artists and cultural functionaries in East Berlin, Dresden, or Rostock have of the documenta, and, conversely, how did the curatorial teams view the GDR? In her study Exhibition Politics: The documenta and the GDR, Alexia Pooth reconstructs this special chapter in the history of the Kassel-based exhibition. The author traces a history of reception and perception in which, despite political animosity, there was always communication. The content ranges from the founding of the documenta in 1955 to Catherine David’s documenta 10 in 1997.

The metal sculptures and drawings of Hans Uhlmann (1900–1975) shaped the image of German postwar modernism. Arrested by the National Socialists in 1933, Uhlmann sketched filigree wire heads during his incarceration. He went on to realize these pieces following his release. In the 1950s, his figurative forms developed further into abstract compositions. With around eighty works, the exhibition at the Berlinische Galerie traces Uhlmann’s creative periods from the 1930s to the 1970s and explores not only his drawings and sculptures but also his role within the West Berlin art scene. This is the first comprehensive retrospective of his work in more than fifty years.

Hier wurde La Chola Poblete, „Artist of the Year“ 2023 der Deutschen Bank, 1989 geboren. Guaymallén is a municipality in the province of Mendoza in Argentina. It was here that La Chola Poblete, Deutsche Bank’s “Artist of the Year” 2023, was born in 1989. The choice to name the exhibition and publication Guaymallén is the artist’s tribute to her roots and a reflection on her queer identity. La Chola Poblete is one of the most renowned Latin American artists. Her work combines biographical and cultural-aesthetic references with fundamental criticism. La Chola engages with the consequences of colonialism and capitalism, especially in the context of the obliteration and stereotyping of Indigenous peoples and cultures. With her first comprehensive monograph Infinite Walk, Katharina Lehmann (b. 1984) invites the reader on an individual artistic journey through her impressive oeuvre. The process of creating her works involves the artist walking back and forth using her unique thread-drip painting technique to create a fabric made up of hundreds of thousands of kilometers of yarn and acrylic paint, which Lehmann then uses in a multitude of ways to create spatial installations, objects, and pictures. Like a journey, the book also has several stages. In a total of eight chapters, the publication illuminates the artist’s most significant creative phases to date. Beginning with 2014, which Katharina Lehmann described as her personal “ground zero,” the presentation extends to the present day and provides an outlook to new horizons.

In his latest series of works, entitled 1.000 Odysseen, Winfried Muthesius (b. 1957) uses his photographs to explore the globally divisive topics of refugeeism and displacement. The artist, who lives and works in Berlin and Cape Verde, photographed items washed ashore on the remote beaches of the Cape Verde islands. These disturbingly poetic images for the most part show details of damaged or destroyed flip-flops—the simple footwear of people living in poverty. In the exhibition at the Stiftung Christliche Kunst Wittenberg, Muthesius enters into a dialogue with Oskar Kokoschka’s piece Rest on the Flight into Egypt, using this example to evoke humankind’s long history of flight and exile. Mie Olise Kjærgaard (b. 1974) conquers an artistic domain closely linked to the idea of the genius male painter: expressive, figurative, large-scale paintings. Composed of turbulent brushstrokes, her works on their huge canvases exude a wildness and power. Kjærgaard is utterly convincing in her adoption of the genre and translates the expressive force of gestural painting into a world of female experience. Her works depict active women in sportswear and flip-flops, their hair standing wildly on end. They ride mythical creatures, hang from the railings of ships, play a round of tennis, or hurtle through the neighborhood on skateboards. Ferocious Expeditions brings together her works from recent years, accompanied by texts that give insight into the work of this Danish painter.

In his work, Dor Guez (b. 1982) explores the relationship between art, memory, storytelling and historiography. The examination of archives, maps, and local narratives has become the hallmark of his approach. Amid Imperial Grids was born out of his artistic analysis of Felix Nussbaum’s artwork and of Daniel Libeskind’s related building, the Felix Nussbaum Haus in Osnabrück. Here, Guez has created a truly unique site-specific installation based on the interweaving of biography and history, the past and memory, cartography and the demarcation of borders. He addresses the peculiarities of the architecture and creates a content-rich spatial setting that reflects on concepts such as nation, culture, history, identity, territoriality, and geopolitics. Kathrin Landa (b. 1980) is a graduate of the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig (HGB) and devotes her art entirely to portrait painting. Her highly acclaimed works live from their expressive objectivity. This catalogue, with an introduction by Michael C. Maurer, showcases the broad spectrum of her work to date, from commissioned pieces to artistic analyses of people at their emotional limits. The author Christoph Kolk traces the poetry of her paintings through his insightful observations. The Stern journalist and couples therapist Nina Poelchau examines Landa’s double portraits and finds that they reveal existential patterns of human relationships. Stuttgart has an extremely large number of artworks by regional, national, and international artists in public space. But they have not been made sufficiently accessible to the public. This volume changes that. As a catalogue of works that is as complete as possible, it documents all the art in public space in Stuttgart for the first time and presents these pieces in an accessible way in order to work against their disappearance. More topical than ever, the Künstler*innen u. a. | Artists et al.: Joannis Avramidis, Stephan Balkenhol, Ernst Barlach, Gerlinde Beck, Alexander Calder, Tony Cragg, Christian Günther und Dorothee Ziegler, Erich Hauser, Alfred Hrdlicka, Nam June Paik, Werner Pokorny, David Rabinowitch, Rosalie, Ulrich Rückriem, Robert Schad, Richard Serra, Mark di Suvero, Herman de Vries

In 2024, the Kunstmuseum Reutlingen | konkret will be showing the major collection exhibition Bernard Aubertin: Rouge et plus. The French painter, a member of the ZERO group known for his monochrome works in the color red, spent many years in Reutlingen. It was there that he created his large-scale wall and room-filling works. However, the exhibition also clearly demonstrates that Bernard Aubertin (1934–2015), known as “le rouge,” should not be reduced solely to his use of the color red, as he experimented with a broad scope of artistic expression throughout his life. The publication to accompany the exhibition features photographs from the current show, as well as archival material, hitherto unpublished studio photographs, historical texts, and newly

written essays. All of this prepares the ground for a reassessment of this artist from the ZERO movement whose work, thus far, has never been accorded the recognition it merits.

The exhibition catalogue Dreihundert Berge (Three Hundred Mountains) comprises a select one hundred paintings by the Chinese artist Haiying Xu (b. 1975). In her work, Xu, who came to Germany more than two decades ago, continues to explore issues of personal identity at the tense interface between heritage, homeland, and migration. Haiying Xu’s memories of the traditional cultures of southeastern China give rise to a reinterpretation of childhood fascination, imagination, and the experience of nature, though her paintings are also very specifically inspired by the colorful costumes of the Peking opera, classical Chinese literature, and the spatial concepts of shadow theater. Despite its retrospective

character, the main focus of this catalogue is her most recent work, which will be on display in 2024 as part of a solo exhibition at Galerie Andreas Binder in Munich.

Pure color, light, and the intangible are the central themes in Rosa M Hessling’s paintings. In 1989, the artist discovered special color pigments in luminescent mineral-based paints which, by interfering with and being superimposed onto light waves, enable a processual perception of color and the parallel refraction of light. These interference pigments, which the artist binds in varnish, create a huge array of different color impressions, depending on the location. Initially, the image carriers were wood, canvas, or Dibond aluminum composite. In the Bitburg exhibition, the juxtaposition of Hessling’s works with the architecture and the art on show throughout the building creates interesting dialogues that lead to new kinds of visual experiences which vary according to the time of day.

The catalogue to accompany the retrospective of the work of Albert Hettinger (1964–2022), the sculptor from Bitburg, includes stone sculptures from various creative periods: from the trained stonemason’s prizewinning final assignment to the sculptor’s last large-scale stele, which he was unable to complete on account of his dwindling strength. Hettinger, whose focused form-finding was influenced by various longer visits to Asia and his exploration of Zen culture, in the main created sculptures made of basalt stone. The sculptural work proper was preceded by the artist’s dialogue with the stones he selected, only individual

In Broken Memories, Andréas Lang explores the themes of recollection and history in Turkey. In a series of photographs and videos, he reflects on the disappearance, the discontinuity, and the multiple layers of historical writings, as well as on the overwriting that leaves visible traces of a collective memory long since rendered invisible. He focuses on the contemporary approach to history, but especially on places with links to the later Ottoman Empire, the Armenian heritage, and the 1915 genocide. Lang describes his work as visual archaeology that exposes the many layers of history and of mythology, as well as of the present day.

The photographic series Banoo by Samaneh Khosravi (b. 1984) addresses the position of women in Iran today. Despite decades of oppression by a male-dominated society, women are steadily gaining ground in science and the world of work. In order to obtain insight into the situation of women in Iran and how they see themselves, the Iranian-German photographer accompanied protagonists from various different social strata and locations in Iran through their everyday lives. The resulting images show women who, contrary to the official government dogma, are an integral part of social life and are already paving the way for a new generation that will continue to stand up for dignity and the right to personal self-determination in the future. The term Banoo is a word used to refer to women that indicates respect and means “lady.”

What would happen if humankind were to disappear? What would Planet Earth look like without us? In his monograph The World Without Us, Rainer Zerback (b. 1958) shows us such a world—in quiet images, shimmering with heat but without any trace of apocalyptic bluster. Targeted image editing brings individual everyday items into sharp focus. We encounter only traces of human civilization: cars, power lines, all kinds of different dwellings. What at first glance gives the impression of peaceful seclusion is at second glance unsettling and disconcerting.

Is Islam a part of Germany? And, if so, since when has this been the case? What is everyday life like for Muslims living here? What form does social coexistence take? In Moin und Salam, the photojournalist Julius Matuschik, together with the political and religious studies scholar Raida Chbib, explores these issues among others, yet they refrain from proffering any one-dimensional answers or conclusive evaluations. Through impressive historical images, true-to-life photographs, and texts on the history and contemporary status of Islam in Germany, this volume guides the reader through historical traces and stories from the past to the present day. The illustrated book is an invitation to the reader to discover the diversity and the vibrant spectrum of Muslim life in Germany through its carefully researched written and visual portrayals.

H2O-scapes by Sylvie Leblanc (b. 1959) are photographic studies of the sky and the water, created between 2009 and 2023 in La Malbaie, Canada. All fifty-seven photographs were taken from the same location and depict the various physical states of the water in and above the Saint Lawrence River. Sometimes the landscape is entirely shrouded in fog without any visible horizon line; other times the outlines of islands are visible. Dramatic cloud formations, drifting ice floes, or soft waves: Leblanc’s landscape remains the same and yet is presented in a multitude of different ways. Her photographs transform the dynamic play of the water molecules into a moment of stillness—and a space for dreams and contemplation.

Bears All Things (from the Finnish “Kaiken se kestää”) is a lifelong art project by the artist couple Mammu and Pasi Rauhala. The project, which has taken place every year since 2013, comprises photographs of the artists going about their daily lives, from renovating their home to gardening—always in the same getup: their wedding attire. Their gestures and appearance, always very serious, are a nod to the tradition of the family portrait. With a generous dose of humor, the works encourage the audience to reflect on the institution of marriage and issues of interpersonal relationships, both on the individual and the societal level.

Willi Filz (b. 1962) traveled the two great northern Spanish Caminos between 2015 and 2022 after falling victim to a twist of fate. His enchanting landscape and nature photographs do not show streams of pilgrims, lodgings, or cathedrals, but instead bear direct testimony to the experience of stillness and contemplation. The black-and-white photographs show motifs viewed directly from the Camino, drawn from moments of hiatus and pause. The photographer is not concerned with any kind of spectacular narrative: “The incidental is always there on our journeys; the insignificant always plays a part—and, if I pay attention to it, it whispers in my ear many of the answers I have spent years searching for.”

Unlike most urban realms, it tends not to have been intentionally created and designed as a living space; in fact, it was initially nothing more than an empty area left between the surrounding buildings. However, residents use it as an open space, assigning it different meanings and functions, and furnishing it with various things. This process of appropriation and design is often less planned and purposeful, and more spontaneous and intuitive. For this very reason, it reveals a lot about

the subconscious attitudes and needs of the people who use this space. Wolfgang Strassl examines the reality of these urban subjects, which are only superficially banal and trivial, and his photographs depict these spaces detached from such attributions as still lifes arranged without design in all their ambiguous, surreal, and poetic depth. 55

In her photographic series Paris – 9 Rue de l’Université, Frizzi Krella (b. 1970) explores the seemingly mundane subject of a window front undergoing renovation work. With her precise eye, she transforms her observations into a multifaceted reflection of the moment, a composition of the ephemeral. Krella’s photographs are an invitation to investigate the world, with its various distortions and compositions, as if it were a puzzle. They are an opportunity to delight in the playful appropriation of the various layers of reality and coincidence in order to assimilate the things we have seen into the cosmos of our own experience of art and the world around us. Thus, her work takes us all the way back to the very origins of photography and to the Paris of two centuries ago, when moments first began to achieve timelessness.
