Message from the President

Tony Sakuda, President American Chamber of Commerce in Okinawa

Let’s reflect. There were challenges as 2022 began and it was unclear which direction this year would go. As the world progressively opened up with coronavirus easing, our General Membership Meetings (GMM) restarted in March with our annual Commanders Panel. We had a total of 7 GMM, and I would like to express my appreciation for our presenters, who volunteered their time, expertise, and insights, for the benefit of our members.

Our Board of Governors, committee chairs, and members pooled their time and skills to create opportunities for networking and business, as described in this yearbook of 2022.

We are thrilled to recommence some events that had been put on hold in recent years, primarily because of the pandemic. To mention only a few: the USO Okinawa sponsored a celebration of Okinawa Memorial Day (Irei no Hi) in June, the Amcham Okinawa Golf Tournament BBQ and golf clinic was held in August, with several monetary and in-kind sponsors, and participation in the Naha Giant Tug of War in October, with 170 U.S. Military Safety Volunteers and 20 AmCham member companies as T-shirt sponsors. The President’s Ball Celebration in December 2022 will be the highlight of the year. Without our kind sponsors and everyone who have offered their time to make each event a success, these events would not be possible. I am grateful.

We would like to thank the U.S. Consulate General Naha for their continuous assistance and look forward to expanding the opportunities available to American companies in Okinawa.

As we journey day by day through into the next year, I would like to underline my enthusiasm for a fantastic, bright future.

Once again, we appreciate your support in 2022 and look forward to even greater success in 2023! Have a safe, joyful, and healthy holiday with your families.

２０２２年を振り返り、初頭は多くの課題があり、一 年の方向性を明確に示すことが困難でした。世界 が新型コロナウイルス感染症に対する行動制限緩 和を進める中、在沖米国商工会議所定例会も�月恒 例のプログラムである「コマンダーズパネル」を皮切 りに、今年は�回の定例会を開催することができま した。当会議所の会員にとって大変有益な専門知識 と見識をご提供くださった講演者の皆様に心より 感謝申し上げます。

この２０２２年の年史でも記されているように、ネッ トワーク強化やビジネス機会創出のために、当会議 所の役員・理事、委員会担当、そして会員の皆様の 貴重な時間とスキルが存分に活かされました。

当会議所は、コロナ渦でここ数年の間中止を余儀な くされていた多くのイベントを再開できることを大 変嬉しく思います。ほんの一部をご紹介しますと、 今年は、USO Okinawaの後援による６月の慰霊の

会員企業様にご参加いただき、成功のうちに幕を 閉じることができました。２０２２年１２月に開催さ れるプレジデンツ・ボールは今年のハイライトとな るでしょう。各イベントを成功させるためにご支援 くださったスポンサーの皆様と、貴重なお時間をご 提供くださった全ての方々のご尽力に心より感謝申 し上げます。

当会議所は、在沖米国総領事館の継続的なご支援 に感謝を申し上げますと共に、沖縄で事業展開する 米国企業の皆様のためにより多くの機会をご提供 いただけますと幸いです。

今年も残すところ僅かとなりましたが、素晴らしい 明るい未来に向け日々精進してまいります。
