Congratulations to Andreea Ene " As we are all aware that the coverage of THD ROTA, especially the months July and August are always difficult for the management, due to the fact that three quarters of our volunteers are away on holidays, to keep the ROTA covered and manned to the standards we require is always a huge challenge to THD management. Andreea did it without hesitation , but her usual determination and dedication, even during her own holiday back in Romania, she carried out this task from afar as if she was close to us in The Hague. Apart from coordinating the Helpdesk ROTA, Andreea is always enthusiastic for new ideas and new ways to improve Helpdesk works, she is a valued assets to ACCESS, we truly appreciate her contribution. Also Congratulation to Sabine Walsh on making Volunteer of the Month August When Sabine joined the ACCESS Guides team in March 2012, it became clear that she had many good ideas and initiatives. So in April she took on the challenge of transforming all existing, mostly out of date ACCESS Guides to new FAQ Guides. A few months later many new guides are ready. It may seem like a piece of cake, but there is a lot of work involved. Sabine manages her team with enthusiasm, dedication and respect for everybody's skills. She is always available to help team members who need advice or assistance. We thank you for all the work you've done and hope that we haven’t seen the last of you  - it is an absolute pleasure to work with you. Editor`s Notes

New Beginnings! »

New beginnings are sometimes challenging to embrace, especially if the experiences that

came before were wonderful, I have learned that the approach one adopts in the face of change makes all the difference. Summer is coming to an end but I rather think about Fall being a new beginning, a beginning with new possibilities, new chances, we don’t need to wait for the sound of fireworks at the end of the year to take the opportunity to start something new, you can do so as the seasons change, as the weeks change and as the day begins. If new possibilities are seen at the end of each step, then life is like a box of chocolate  We tend to want to hold on to the great moments in the past, and why not they were wonderful, but in the state of retention you let slip away the possibility of the present. This summer we have seen great athletes compete for greatness, a successful space mission culminating in the safe return of all passengers, and for some it has being the wettest summer (or at least so it seemed). We have enjoyed vacationing with families, our children and whenever possible the Beach among many other things. All of that is ending and we are slowly returning to our routine, with the only hope that fall will treat us a bit kinder in regards to the weather, Well I say wish for more. Nonetheless let us remember that past experiences, whether good or bad cannot surpass what you can create in the present and the future. This issue has much recollection of the past summer but my favourite part is always what is to come in the near future, maybe you will join one of the classes we advertise, maybe the fall is when you will go on the much needed vacation time instead of the past summer, regardless of what happens the future is in your hands and new beginnings are always possible!

Meet The Volunteers

Valentina Armini Hi, I am Valentina, I am 29 years old and I come from Naples, Italy. I studied Foreign Languages and Literature at the University “L’Orientale” of Naples and after my masters I decided to move to The Netherlands. Why here? Well, thanks to my studies, I got the chance to go to Lisbon for several months and there, instead of finding a nice Mediterranean guy I ended up with a very nice Dutch man. There are many important reasons why I left Italy, but mainly in search of finding better career opportunity and a brighter future, So I thought: ”Let’s go to Holland! After a month looking for jobs, trying to fill up my huge amount of free time I had with different activities (i.e. studying Dutch, walking around, meeting new people, trying new recipes etc.) I joined ACCESS. Officially, I started volunteering last May and since then I am really enjoying the experience collaborating with the Volunteer Resources Department and the Helpline Department. Besides working at ACCESS, I am still in the process of building up my life trying to find ways to feel part of this environment. At the moment I am studying Dutch, I am taking advantage of all the beautiful Dutch bossen by running two-three times per week and I never stop cultivating my culture and personal knowledge by reading articles and books. Among all my other ambitions, I see myself in the future as a person who wants to be as helpful as possible in our society (maybe working for an NGO, why not?) and who never stops learning. I know for sure that soon I will start studying again to bring my life to a more specific direction (maybe in the field of international relations). I know it takes time and efforts but that’s why I’m here for: to reinvent myself and learn more and more.

Antonio Gutierrez Hello, I’m Antonio Gutierrez. I was born in Paris, France, close to the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs-Elysees. My parents are Spanish. I married a Dutch lady 10 years ago and we have a son, who is now 8 years old. We moved from Paris to Brussels and 2 years ago to The Hague. We now live in the beautiful Statenkwartier and most of our shopping is done on ‘the Fred’ (Frederik Hendriklaan). We enjoy being so close to the beach and to be able to cycle everywhere. Each Saturday we explore a different part of the city. My Dutch is getting better every day. I joined Access in 2012 and I volunteer twice a week on the Helpdesk. The variety of queries we receive means that I’ve learnt a lot about The Netherlands myself in a short period. It is satisfying to be able to help people with their challenges. I’m also working with the Guide department to inform them of ‘frequently asked questions’. I also volunteer as a translator for Europa Nostra. Through this work I am learning more about the safeguarding of Europe’s cultural and natural heritage. My education is in Finance and I’ve worked in stock-market related jobs in France. For the past few years, I’ve focused on giving our son a wonderful home and family life. I’m now studying to convert my career to be on the interface between Finance and Information Technology. Any advice on job opportunities in this area would be more than welcome.

The Olympics 2012: Through the Eyes of Londoner

Well we pulled it off. Seven years in the making, London and the people of Great Britain made a jolly good show of the thirtieth Olympiad and hopefully demonstrated to the world what a dynamic, easy-going and vibrant nation we really are. As encapsulated in the opening and closing ceremonies, our fair isle is still a leading trendsetter when it comes to popular culture and we’re certainly not afraid to poke fun at our eccentricities! Ever since London won the bid to host the Olympic Games back in 2005, the capital and indeed the whole country has been fed an almost constant diet of ‘London 2012’. Not everyone was in support of the games - on average public support stood at around 70% beforehand. Especially to those from outside the capital (who wouldn’t necessarily receive any direct benefits from the Olympics), the spending of £9 billion (four times the original estimate) was unpopular, especially during a time of recession and cuts to public services. Aside from this, there were doubts as to whether the country could rise to the challenge (made all the more difficult in having to try to match the grandeur of the 2008 Beijing Olympics). Would London’s creaking transport system collapse under the influx of visitors? Would the infamous British weather be kind to the games? In the end such fears proved unfounded; the transport system flowed freely and for the most part, visitors to London basked in the delights of an English Summer. Of course there were minor blips. With just two weeks to go it was revealed that there was a shortfall in security personnel. However, the old British mantra of ‘keep calm and carry on’ was applied and troops from the British Army were drafted in, helping to ensure a safe and secure Olympics. As for concerns as to whether the British public would get fully behind the games, these were soon proved unfounded by the millions who came out to watch and cheer on the Olympic Torch Relay as it wound its way across the country. Such enthusiasm was also spurred on by the success of Team GB, finishing third in the medals table with a total of 29 gold medals (their best performance since the 1908 Olympics, which just so happened also to be held in London), surpassing everyone’s wildest expectations. With the passing of the Olympics, the challenge now is to galvanise the current wave of public enthusiasm and make sure that the games leave a lasting legacy. Whatever the future holds, the summer of 2012 will forever be a golden moment in the capital’s history. After last year’s Royal Wedding, the recent Diamond Jubilee celebrations and now the Olympics, London and the UK continues to capture the attention and intrigue of global audiences. Well, they don’t call it Great Britain for nothing.......

FIRESIDE CHATS – FREE FOR ACCESS VOLUNTEERS IN 2012 WEEKLY DISCUSSION GROUP: Chats help international orientated people become more self-aware so they can live more diversity empathic lives. Each meeting will cover a new topic on diversity ranging from racial identity, ethnic identity, racism, gender, orientation, accessibility, to power issues and much more. Daytime discussion groups are done on Thursdays at Bagels and Beans, Thomsonlaan, while evening discussion groups are done on Thursdays at Valkenboskade 131. Recipes

Crostini with Fava Bean and Bacon 1 Baguette  4 tablespoons olive oil  250 gram fresh Fava Beans  8 slices of bacon  150 grams of Feta cheese  Balsamic vinegar  Salt and Pepper 1) Slice the baguette in large slanted pieces, drizzle with olive oil and roast in oven for 5 minutes 2) Blanch the Fava Beans for 3 minutes in a large pan with boiling water, once cooked peel them and mash them with a fork , mix with rest of olive oil, salt and pepper 3) Cut the bacon into long strips and cook them 3 min in pan until crispy 4) Spread the bean puree on baguette slices, followed by the bacon and pieces of feta. Drizzle with balsamic vinegar and olive oil a sprinkle a bit of sea salt. Stuffed Paprika        

4 Green Paprika’s 1 Carrot 1 Potato 1 Green pepper 1 Tomato 1 can of tuna (in water) 2 spoons Mayo Salt and Pepper

1) Wash the paprika, remove the top and wash out seeds. 2) Peel carrot and potatoes and cut into cubes, wash pepper and cut into tiny cubes Place all the above ingredients into a pan with boiling water for 15minutes. 3) Once the vegetables have cooled mix with mayo and tuna, season with salt and pepper 4) Warm oven to 180, wash tomato and slice 5) Fill the Paprika with two slices of cheese that go over the edges followed by stuffing and cover with slice of tomato 6) Bake for 15minutes until cheese is golden brown Easy Fall Carrot Soup

8 Carrots 2 teaspoon Coriander seeds 4 sprigs of Thyme 10 cl Cream Vegetable bouillon Salt and pepper

1) Wash carrots and slice 2) Place 50 cl water, and coriander seed and thyme in a pan. Add salt and pepper and cook for 15 minutes 3) Remove the thyme from the soup, puree the carrots, place the puree in the pan and add cream. Mix the soup with the vegetable bouillon

KIDS NEWS NETWORK: WORL KIDS NEWS PRESENTER WANTED Kids News Network produces news for children and youth and gives them a voice in mostly developing countries. KNN currently consists of eight programs broadcasting on television and Internet, and will continue to broaden its scope. The participating countries at this point are: Peru, Bolivia, Suriname, Zambia, Mozambique, Curacao, Burma and Indonesia. By the end of this year Nepal, Ghana and Bangladesh will joint us and by the end of next year hopefully Brazil, Russia, India, Egypt, South Africa and Mexico will be partners as well. KNN provides content that is relevant to young people between eight and sixteen years of age and offers a platform to young people to voice their interests, opinions and concerns, their initiatives and accomplishments. We are looking for kids who are interested in presenting the World Kids News bulletin every 2 weeks, here in The Netherlands. We will be taping all the presentation texts of one episodes in 2 or 3 hours time it depends on how quickly the boy or girl can manage the teleprompter and have a talent for presentation. After that we will edit the whole episode and distribute it to all the developing countries who are member to KNN. So it won't take up much of their time, but it has to be done. We would like to do auditions for children who are interested in this particular task. ANNIVERSARY EXHIBITION OF MUTSAERS LEATHER: MUSEUM OF BAGS & PURSES In celebration of its fiftieth anniversary, the designer Mutsaers will be showing handbags at the Museumof Bags and Purses as of 25 September. Founded in 1962 by Jan and Annie Mutsaers, the company has since continued to craft leather goods (e.g. shoulder bags, briefcases and travel bags) according to traditional methods. In the Netherlands, Mutsaers holds a unique position as it is among the few leather-goods businesses designing and manufacturing its products entirely within the country. Bags and other articles by Mutsaers are distinguished by classic styling with contemporary elements, excellent quality and the use of fine materials and sustainable types of leather from Italy. The exhibition will include handbags from the past and several others that have been produced specially for their anniversary. ISAAC ISRAELS IN THE HAGUE This summer five museums are presenting a large number of oil paintings and watercolours by the Dutch master Isaac Israels, who depicted The Hague and Scheveningen at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century in many of his works. Complementing the artworks are archive photos showing the views Israel painted. Many of the paintings are on special loan from private collections. RUNNING The Dam to Dam run is 10 miles long and goes from Amsterdam to Zaandam. Around 40,000 runners are expected to start on the Prins Hendrikkade in Amsterdam. STANLEY KUBRICK: THE EXHIBITION Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999) may only have made eight films but he is one of the most influential directors of the 20th century. People either love or hate his film, such as A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon and Eyes Wide Shut, but there's no denying his technical and artistic genius or the sly humour that pervades much of his work. He was also a master at creating iconic moments. Think of Jack Nicholson's smile as he hacks down a door and pronounces 'Heeere's Johnny!' in The Shining, or the neurotic computer HAL with its red eye in 2001: A Space Oddity, or the major in Dr Strangelove riding the nuclear bomb like a cowboy. This exhibition covers all his films, each of which has its own space with screenplays, storyboards, set models, props, costumes and clips from the film. There is also a documentary made by Jan Harlan, producer and brother of Kubrick's wife, about the director's life and way of working. A programme of Kubrick films is also being shown (see website for details), including earlier work such as The Killing, Paths of Glory and Spartacus. The story revolves around the theft and rediscovery of The Queen's jewellery. The cast includes Basje Chanowski as The Queen, Manuela Uhl as Els and Raymond Very as the minstrel Elis.
