+ project Renovation Trainstation Oldenzaal For this project we had to redesign an historical trainstation. The problem of this building was the quality of the building and the unorganized and unclear plan. And next the building would become the centre of the area again. re-Generation Lungs for Amstel III CONCEPT For the design we changed the interior from an difficult unrecognizable plan into an open and clear plan. The middle area becomes an area where people can relax, wait for the train, have dinner or enjoying the view of the passing train with its passengers. (1) The building increased in size by adding new functions to the design. (2) Outside the building we introduced new functions as well like a bicycle storage, entrances towards the platform and bus a busstop. To make one big cohesion we introduced an element which bring all the program into one design. This big element is a structure made of aluminium tubes which are folded into one roof and frames the view of the station. (3) During the day the frame shows the functions and during the night the frame lights up because of the use of LED technology.

Spiretec Noida

CONCEPT The goal of this entry is to create a ‘heart’ for the Spiretec IT Complex and to create public spaces for this community so it becomes a real part of society. Two blocks facing east/west connect the proposed complex. One contains the hotel, the other the apartment building. Together they define the central space and protect it from the sun. As the users spend many hours a day indoors it is our intention to offer them a completely different experience. Services such as small shops and cafes will be spread out over the ground floor like confetti. The hotel, convention centre and apartments are also connected to the heart with their lobbies. The whole ground floor is covered by a continuous partly open/closed roof, which will unify the complex like a large tapestry. This roof shades the outdoor car park, the network of streets and the gardens and squares. Parts of the roof can open in the evening for natural ventilation; it will be more closed over the bank and library. It’s flexibility will allow for changes over time.

//12

Koningin Emma School Haarlem CONCEPT The idea was to create an extension which would contain classrooms and a big hall. The design of the building was based on one homogenic volume where the holes were cut out. These holes would mask the structure and pro gram inside of the building. For the facade we decided to use the material of ceramic rooftiles which will be placed vertical on the facade.

Graduation Project TU Delft New York, USA 2007

+ project Border Conditions Excite Ferry Terminal This project for Studio Border Conditions is focused on the area of New York. The research started with a fascination you want to research about. Mine was the underground scene in New York. But instead of taking the contex of the underground scene in the art scene or music scene I took this literally by going underground, to the New York Subway stations. In these areas happens streetperformances done by artists who are expressing their art to the public. Art expressions like dance, music or just entertainment performances. These performances are based on temporary period, unexpected and suprise and done on locations which are not really made to perform. But just because of these elements of suprise of these performances they are creating a transformation of space they are happening.

My research is focussing on the architectural and sociological elements of these performances mainly what this transformation is and the effect is on the area, on the people.

For this project this research will be done by making mappings to be finally the base and inspiration for the development of a building. SIZE: 9,150 m2 PROGRAM: TERMINAL SPACE / EXHIBITION SPACE / OFFICE SPACE / SERVICES / PARKING/ DOCKS DIONS ROLE IN PROJECT: GRADUATING MASTER STUDENT

//20

Excite Ferry Terminal NY RESEARCH

After analyzing different performances I decided to study one performance in detail. So I decided to study the performance of a guitar player with a violin player. I have been looking at the trajectories of the audience during the performance and how they went and added the factor ‘time’. By inserting this factor the route/trajectory of the audience became a path based on time where increasing and decreasing of speed was present. This increasing and decreasing of speed do I notate as ‘rhythm’.

// Guitar and violin performance situated on a platform at the Time Square Subway station

//Platform at Times Square Subway Station

// Trajectories and positions on platform of people during performance

// Domains of circulation versus domains of improvisation

// 3d mass model of the trajectories of people

//21

The rhythm of this performance I got by making an ‘mapping’ (analyze) of the audiences’ behavior during this performance. I notated their location, their trajectories and dierences between where they started and where they end, all during a certain period of 46 frames of 0.5 seconds. With this information I made a diagram of this information which ended up in a ‘structure’ of rhythms during time. This structure naly showed the basic structure for the design. This structure is notated as rhythm in time (transitions, increasing of speed, decreasing of speed) The structure which I finally got is a structure of peoples behavior disturbed by the performance and a structure of peoples behavior without any disturbing by the performance. After doing this I finally got a structure which shows the transformation of the space by the performance. Which I used for the design of the building. For developing the reasearch procudure towards had I chosen to use the structure for a function which expressed the riged structure of traveling and a function which contains the elements being the opposit of it.I ended up in the function of a ferryterminal which contains spaces for art. EXHIBTION VERSUS TERMINAL /// ExCiTé NY

// diagram / Peoples behavior disturbed by performance versus behavior which is not disturbed by performance

//22

The next step to continue with the diagrams I deformed the structure of the normal sequential development of a transition by the improvisation. The deformation is done on a grid system of the frames versus distance towards the performance. This grid represents this sequential development of the performance. With this deformation or deconstruction of the sequential development I gained three parameters.

DIAGRAM OF RHYTHMS of the performance

These parameters are three rhythms which are coming out of the interaction (the transformation of the space during the performance). Parameter of CONNECTIVITY, parameter of TRANSITION and the parameter of THE IMPACT OF THE TRANSITION.

entrance

For the final step I took these three rhythms and merged them into one diagram which shows an abstract interpretation of the transformation by the performance. I called this interpretation the diagram of rhythms of the performance.

The location for the building will be situated at the riverside of Long Island, Hunterspoint. The area of Hunterspoint is nowadays a deserted and desolated area where almost no development is. The area used to be a high industrial area where small but high industrial factories where operating. During time the area became more abandoned and need now aeconomical injection of new investments to grow and develop.

The mapping for the project is based on transitional flows gained from the research about the transitional versus improvised. To cope with this I will make a ferry terminal. The building will contain these transitional flows and is able to connect with the areas condition. The areas condition contains five interesting places to connect with the terminal and Manhattan. One place is the trainstation (1) which is ending in this area. The other is the leisure area of sport facilities with park (2). The third interesting place is upcoming economic centre (3). The fourth place is the Long Island highway (4) which is going here under the river. And the last place is huge deserted space of nothing but sand, grass and mud (5). These five places will be connected by the terminal with Manhattan to have a good intensive connection. A connection which can attract investments, visitors and tourists to this area.

The development from the structure towards the nal design of the terminal was based on certain steps. I made a diagram of the dierent rhythms of the structure and made him 3d. I implemented functions and tried to create a landscape / cityscape which provide the possibilities to use the terminal as it should be, (rigid / fast / no identity) by giving opportunities to improvise with art exhibitions (improvisition / delayed / identity based) on the terminal’ structure. The building is made of concrete which made the smoothness for the terminal disturbed by the exhibitionspaces.
