In contemporary societies, timeโlinear time, mechanical time, western timeโis undergoing a crisis: one caused by its scarcity. Time has become the ultimate commodity. For long, artists have cultivated alternative understandings of temporal relations by merging and manipulating distinct temporalities to articulate diverse epistemologies of time. Such a critical shift is not simply aimed at countering the frantic rhythms that dominate the present. Through their practices, artists offer multiepistemic understandings of time to address the critical urgencies of our lives, including the climate crisis, the ongoing legacies of colonial histories, and the urgency to act upon planetary interdependency.
Beyond Time is a constellation of artistic encounters that unfolds across the communal spaces of the Culture Summit Abu Dhabi 2024, responding to and further articulating some of the key topics of the latter. The project presents artistic practices that consider time in the plural form, rethink time(s) in nonanthropocentric ways, and uphold pluriversal notions of temporality beyond western paradigms. By moving beyond established assumptions, the featured artists offer epistemically diverse understandings of time that advance radical forms of sense-making, critical thinking, and experimental research.

Jumana Emil Abboudโs practice focuses on the legacy of folkloric tales, myths, songs, and oral histories passed down by generations of Palestinian women. For the artist, such repositories of knowledge are living sediments of the multiple times and histories that the land in Palestine has witnessed and are a locus of cultural and spiritual resistance in the face of occupation.
The series Water Stories emerges from research conducted by Abboud on Mediterranean tales common to Palestine and Greece. The artist integrates references to the locales from which these stories emerge into the materiality of the artworks, which were developed with pigments obtained from Palestinian plants and fruits. In the drawings, the relationship between land, beings, and stories blends the boundaries of the human and the nonhuman and generates a continuous and fluid non-anthropocentric temporality that merges past tales, present struggles, and resilient forms of futurity.

Adriana Bustos reverse-engineers the role of maps as systems of control. She charts elements that constitute the building blocks of established systems of knowledge to symbolically reshape their internal connections and defy the linearities of time and Western epistemic hierarchies. The artist thus sheds light on the power of visual culture to construct imaginaries and manipulate knowledge. The series Imago Mundi is a constellation of visual information that Bustos rearranges to generate new synchronic historical narratives. Imago Mundi XIII. Turist Map exposes the forces that have transformed the city of Miami into a gateway between the USA and Central and South America, both as an economic crossroad and as a tourist destination. Imago Mundi I. Mapa turรญstico addresses another gateway that is geographically and symbolically specular to Miami: Cuba. Drawing references from erudite and pop sources, the large-scale drawing seems to connect โcluesโ to articulate, in flashes, the stories of touristization, commodification, and exoticization of this Caribbean island.

Adji Dieye is an Italo-Senegalese artist who employs photography to epistemically reassess the fictional linearity of official history and undermine the imaginaries that structure identitarian narratives. Her work questions how visual culture and archival knowledge have formed historically and conflates different photographic temporalities to reexamine the processes of decolonization and their present-day fictions. Butterfly,CultureLost and Learned by Heart merges historical photos with new imagery captured by the artistโs camera. The resulting sculpture questions the process of architectural and identitarian construction of postindependence Senegal. Through a cinematic sequence of images, the artist scrutinizes how the Senegalese public space and its architectures were not free from a colonial mindsetโa historical occurrence proven by the long lineage of European (and, in particular, French) architects entrusted by the independent Senegalese state to design some of the most iconic architectures of West Africa.

Lamya Gargashโs photographic practice focuses on cultural heritage, memory, and identity to examine how these notions inhabit objects and spaces. In her images, human presence is implied but never visible. The photographs presented here are drawn from the series Sahwa, an Arabic word that designates rebirth and awakening. Focusing on artifacts from Abu Dhabiโs Al Ain Museum, the artist reflects on the process of recovering the materiality of archeological items whose social and cultural function has been dormant for centuries through an observation of the techniques, gestures, and environments in which the restoration of the museumโs historical objects takes place. By capturing how ancient materiality is manipulated, the photographs interrogate the epistemic strategies through which the manipulation of matter brings historical meaning and memory back to life in the present.

Abeer Seikaly weaves together architecture, art, and cultural production in her multidisciplinary practice. A key line of inquiry in her work focuses on Bedouin traditional systems of intellectual and material knowledge and their significance in contemporary societies. Matters of Timearticulates this research by observing Bedouin womenโs production of tents in the Badia Jordanian desert. The resulting structures, named Beit-Al-Shaโar (house of hair) and made with goat hair and sheep wool, have been handmade by women for centuries. These women perpetuate an ancestral architectural technology that is nowโmore than everโrelevant due to its adaptability, ingenuity, and sustainability. Seikalyโs video work sheds light on the skillfulness of such a process and on its ancestral ability to respond flexibly to the surrounding environment, as opposed to the rigidity of modern brick-and-concrete architecture.

Buhlebezwe Siwani celebrates the richness of South African spirituality and its resilience across time. As an artist and a Sangoma, or traditional healer, her practice honors the forms of knowledge and connection to the land preserved by her ancestors in the face of South Africaโs colonial history. The site-specific installation Umthwaloโโloadโ in Zulu and Xhosaโis part of an ongoing series of works in which, through matter and shapes, the artist reflects on her spiritual path as a healer and on the physical and symbolic elements that have grounded her journey. The wool ropes that compose the floating sculpture evoke the belts used by members of the Zion Church in Southern Africa as symbols of knowledge and faith. Resembling umbilical cords, the wool components evoke the traditional practice of burying such organic matter upon childrenโs birth to secure the continuation of an intergenerational connection with land and place.

Through research-based and speculative methodologies, Himali Singh Soinโs practice defies the colonial gaze that regards โnaturalโ space as mere geography, time as linear history, and subjecthood as a human prerogative. Mountain, Pixelated in The Water is part of the broader research project we are opposite like that, which considers the Poles beyond cartographic definitions and through the standpoint of ice, which the artist regards as a living entity and a repository of crossgenerational histories and sedimented forms of knowledge. In being the ultimate witness of the Anthropocene, ice becomes a protagonist that embodies different temporalities: geological pasts, ecological presents, and potential, postnatural futures. The Ikatโtextiles developed with yarns that have been resist died before being woven into clothโwere led by master weaver Gajam Govardhan in Andhra Pradesh in India during the pandemic when his family of weavers did not have work. The pixelated and seemingly glitching patterns, while resonating with the colonial implications of the use of indigo, are also a register of the spectrum of sounds and lost stories encountered by the artist during her research.

Tricky Walsh questions the boundaries of sensing and sense-making through a practice that enmeshes geometry, language, science, and speculative fiction. The series of drawings presented here simultaneously addresses multiple temporalities to question the dominant epistemologies of time and to expand common understandings of past, present, and future. The resulting artworks are a conceptual and visual study of elements such as the tesseract (the extension into the fourth dimension of a cube) or of concepts such as the Omega Point, theorized by twentieth-century paleontologist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin as the final point of unification of the universe. By captivating visual strategies that can also be activated through augmented reality, the artist reflects on the finitude of human knowledge and invites viewers on a speculative journey through psychedelic shapes, colors, and words to expand our ability to make sense of the universe and our existence.
