ET&T MAS MEN SHARE CARNIVAL INSIGHT NEWS AMID BAND LAUNCH SEASON Written by D. Nandlal

eads, bikinis and bacchanal. Band launch season is here. And to quote the words of Lord Kitchener, we have to ask “neighbour what mas you go play?” It’s the time of the year where many mas’ bands taunt and tease images of their upcoming designs hoping to attract the attention of both new and existing masqueraders to lure them out for their big revelation. With the end goal being to purchase one of their designs and experience Carnival with their band. As everything else has evolved, so too has Carnival. We turned to some of the pioneers in the industry; Legacy’s band leader Michael ‘Big Mike’ Antoine and Ronnie Mc Intosh, band leader of Ronnie and Caro to find out exactly how has Carnival evolved and what can be expected from them for Carnival 2k19. The music for one has changed Big Mike said. “Compare Sparrow’s ‘Doh Back, Back on Me’ and Kes’s ‘Hello’ you will notice the difference in ‘riddim’ and beat. While both are sweet in its own way, it is a different melody altogether.” Ronnie concluded. “The music is what makes people come out and play. Over the years it has certainly changed and it is constantly evolving.” Another aspect of Carnival that has evolved is the overall organization of Mas Camps. Big Mike said “Longtime family and friends use to help out. Now you have to hire staff, pay salaries and some mas bands even have staff all year round. Overall the organization offers a more personalized touch than how it used to be back in the day.” The entire on the road experience has also evolved, making it more comfortable for masqueraders. Things such as portable bathrooms locally referred to as “the wee wee trucks” are something many mas bands offer. A rest truck is also one of the latest offerings. In the event masqueraders need to cool down and rest for a bit, there are air-conditioned maxis which facilitate this. Most recently, to make

it a more luxurious experience some bands have included a champagne bar within the band. As for the overall organization of Carnival, Ronnie admitted that there are a lot of weak areas where improvement needs to be done for it to be more profitable and result in a better experience overall. However, he further added that they don’t focus too much on that. Instead, they try to focus on the paying patron and how they can make their experience an enjoyable one. Big Mike without a hesitation said “Trini Carnival is hands down the greatest show on the earth. But it can be even better if the authorities put their heads together and improve the overall organization of Carnival. At the end of the day, it is the fastest way to generate income for the economy apart from oil and gas. We need to keep raising the bar.” So what can be expected from these two Mas band powerhouses? For Ronnie and Caro it would be a tribute to Tobago with the title of the band being “Let’s go to Tobago.” Some of the section names

Band leaders Ronnie and Carol

are Black Rock, Nylon Pool and Tobago Wedding. For Legacy, it is all about colour and the title is “Colour Me Carnival.” Big Mike said masqueraders can expect lots of colour and vibes. Of course, things like goodie bags, good food and great security are just some of the elements that would be included as part of the overall experience.” The biggest change for Ronnie and Caro would be how the band launch would be done. This year they decided to do everything online. Ronnie said, “a big part of our masqueraders is based outside of T&T and that way they get to be part of the launch as well.” He further added that the launch will include social media posting, the website will be updated with all the information and images and overall they predict a great response to the approach. Big Mike is also making some adjustments to organizing his band launch. In the past, the band would have rented out a large outdoor venue, but he said not only is it expensive, so too are the permits

which makes it unprofitable. Much like last year, he will be using an indoor venue to launch “Colour Me Carnival.” It is scheduled for early September. This too is a different approach as Legacy’s band launch is usually carded for July/August. In closing when asked these two mas men what they both thought about Machel Montano’s statement about Jamaica’s Carnival being better than Trinidad at Sunnation Jamaica both agreed that it is something entertainers do to hype up the crowd. Ronnie said “it’s a poetic license. For instance, if a performer from Toronto comes to T&T to perform he might say Trini women are the best. If he goes to Barbados the next day, he’ll say Bajan women are the best.” On the other hand, Big Mike said “having experienced Carnival all over the world and won many titles, Trini Carnival is still the best. As for what another entertainer said, it most likely would be to appease the crowd.” Interested in seeing more from both Legacy and Ronnie and Caro? Check out their social media handles below. ET&T STYLEWEEK PORT OF SPAIN 2018 NEWS A FASHIONABLE AFFAIR! Written by Dr. A. Martin

F

ashionistas get ready for Styleweek Port of Spain "The premier fashion week of Latin America & the Caribbean." Cocovelvet International Modeling Agency is set to host this event from October 12 - 14, 2018 at NAPA Port of Spain & Hilton Trinidad and Conference Centre. The buzz and anticipation surrounding this edition is incredible, due in part to the return and involvement of former Cocovelvet Top Models who have earned ‘Top Model’ status abroad. For instance if you followed the recently concluded 2018 Paris/Spring Summer Fashion Week, you would have seen our Trini girl Naomi Chin Wing, fiercely striding down the catwalk having earned the coveted opportunity to be draped in the stunning creative visions of the likes of Alexander Mc Queen, John Galliano, Rochas, Giambaytista Valli and Altuzarra. Chin walked for a whopping total of 11 designer shows. The Coco Velvet groomed talent was even featured on Vogue’s online platform with the heading - "Saint Laurent introduces the World to Trinidad's Next Top Model" Naomi, a 5 ft 11 Diego Martin native and graduate of Providence Girls Catholic School, Belmont won Coco Velvet’s Top Model Trinidad and Tobago contest in 2015. She debuted internationally for Yves Saint Laurent at Paris Fashion Week in 2017. Presently signed to IMG Model Management and based in London, she works with their Milan, New York, Paris, London and Sydney agencies. One of the highlights of the Styleweek is the finals of the Top Model Trinidad & Tobago 2018 at NAPA Port of Spain on October 14th. This competition began with approximately 140 teens who were trained by a team inclusive of Sharon Imbert (Workshop Coach) and Christopher 2

Nathan (Programme Director). An exciting and related touch surrounds the presence of Trinidad & Tobago's first Supermodel Teresa Lorenco, who along with Naomi Chin, will act as one of the judges for the competition. Ms. Teresa migrated from San Fernando, Trinidad to Germany at the tender of age of 13. She was soon discovered by a booker from Mega Models Modeling Agency and three years later she would begin to heap accolades such as the Best New Face award at France's Les Trophees de la Mode in Paris and later, Best New Generation Model at the International Design Award. Ms. Lorenco subsequently relocated to Paris and embarked on a commendable career, landing her first major job there with John Galliano who engaged her services for both of his

iconic associates and employers - Givenchy and Christian Dior. She has graced the cover of such high profile magazines as Vogue, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, Cosmopolitan and L'Officiel and has participated in Ad Campaigns for Victoria's Secret, Christian Dior, Valentino, Tommy Hilfiger, Sean John Unforgivable and Gap. Her resume also boasts a long list of runway shows for high profile designers like Dior, Armani, Givenchy, Gaultier, Chanel, Ungaro, Victoria's Secret, Tommy Hilfiger, Celine, Sonia Rykiel, Loewe and Kenzo. Teresa was also featured in the music videos of Lenny Kravitz ‘Again’ and Babyface, ‘Here She Goes’. On being able to track her and enlist her participation, Cocovelvet International Founder, Mr. Christopher Nathan explained, “I have been following Teresa since I was flying with BWIA as her sister Eleanor Lourenco was a flight attendant too. She made the contact with Teresa. I wrote to Teresa and told her what I was doing with the local fashion industry. She loved the Styleweek proposal and jumped right in.” So why don't we have more Chins and the likes on International Stages? According to Nathan, “Most Trinidad & Tobago models lack stamina, a killer instinct for success and the right disposition for international work. The work

ethic at Naomi's level is incredibly demanding and I have found our local models are too laid-back.” Apart from Teresa and Naomi, 3 other former Top Models will be returning to sit on the Top Model Trinidad and Tobago panel: • Crystal Noreiga, 2010’s winner represented T&T at Elite Model Look 27th World Finals in Shanghai China and landed a management contract with Elite Latin & South America.

• Dominique Armorer Mason was 1999’s Top Model Contest winner. She was subsequently signed to Elite Model Management, New York. • Michelene Auguste trained at Cocovelvet International’s Fashion Workshops in 2005 and 2008 and later signed to IMG Model Management, New York in 2009. Styleweek is a fashion industry trade show which allows for both models and designers to share the spotlight. Nathan showed his enthusiasm about the project saying, “I am truly excited about the support the fashionweek has received from the fashion community. Forty-eight fashion brands have already registered including established brands Meiling CLD, Peter Elias, Claudia Pegus and Heather Jones. We have offered a full catwalk show to UTT for showcase of CAFD alumni. The event will kick off at 5pm on the 12th! Come celebrate our designer and model successes as well as our potentials!” For more information folow @cocovelvetinternational on instagram or visit the following pages on Facebook: Coco Velvet International; Top Model Trinidad & Tobago; Caribbean Resort Styleweek Portofspain and Portofspain International Fashion Centre.

VOLUPTUOUS VIXEN ONIKA

USING VIRAL FAME TO HER BENEFIT

C

urvaceous cutie Onika Dennis has been taking social media by storm over the last three years. In fact, she has increased the popularity of some of her photographers as much as they have increased hers with their work. With more curves than a Blanchisseuse road, it is no wonder so many people are talking about this brown bombshell. J Hamilton, Ikenna Douglas and Christopher Hunte are the photographers whose snaps have contributed to never-ending drool streams thus far. The 24 year old Morvant native is not the typical runway model (even though she has worked the Red Runway ramp before). Instead, she is dominating the new wave realm of IG modeling. Onika has over a quarter million followers on her nika_iz_sexi Instagram page due to her incredible photo catalogue which usually shows her stunting in sexy urban designer

wear. Plus, she often empowers her Afrocentric followers by calling them “Black Queens and Kings” The viral vixen has smartly parlayed that fame into successfully launching her own casual wear brand, AfrodisiacTT. She says she started the line small, beginning with t-shirts since she didn’t have the time to go full speed ahead into fulfilling

her master plan. Onika is currently studying hard and working on her craft in the garment construction field so she will be well-equipped for when that time comes. So far, reviews of her designs have been positive and her followers have already begun buying in to the project. Onika keeps an eye on all the current designers and trends in order to stay on top of her game. As such, she isn’t too egotistical to admit she draws from the inspiration of others. She says her favourite designer is William McIntosh. Online feedback and research has made it evident to us that what separates the Afrodisiac founder from the rest is a commitment to maintaining her natural appeal. She realizes being thick is an asset and while she does workout, she stayed true to her Caribbean curviness. Plus, she often sports an afro – which is a cheeky part of the reason behind the name of her clothing line. As far as her secrets to how

she maintains her voluptuous figure, Onika says she eats everything, but makes sure to monitor her portions. She doesn’t claim to be a fitness junkie, but she does include exercise whenever she can. I guess we can chalk it up to amazing genes. When asked about the pros and cons of being a viral sensation, Dennis notes that understanding and managing her online success can be a tightrope and it is all about balance. “Social Media fame has its ups and downs. I feel really good when I know I can get into almost any event or get free stuff from a lot of companies. However, the disadvantage is that if you slip up one time in public or on social media the people who know you will be ready and willing to drag you through the mud. So I have to watch what I post at all times,” she opined. With her cool demeanor and authentic West Indian womanly features, we are sure to hear more about this young talent in the future. Stay tuned.

ET&T MODEL MANIA

Name: Sofeeyah Khan Age: 16 years old Hometown: San Juan Hobbies: Gymnastics, Swimming, writing poetry Sofeeyah Khan is not the average model. Her confidence, bubbly personality and sense of humour are attributes which make her prime pageant material. In fact, one of her main goals is to represent her beloved Trinidad and Tobago at the Miss World or Miss Universe pageant. Even though she has only been modeling for just over one year, her pageant game is already strong. She recently competed in an international pageant; Miss Royalty International in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States of America, and placed first runner up. This was the first time someone from the Caribbean, had taken part in this pageant. Kahn also walked away with special prizes such as, Best Evening Gown, Best Fashion Wear, runner up for

the best Commercial Model and she also won the Best International Runway Model Title on the whole. Her winning designs were created by designer Aaron Moneer. Speaking of designers, Sofeeyah highly rates those who helped her along her previous pageant journey such as Moneer, Marc Anthony, Naballah Chi and Kerby Young. She also worked with a plethora of talented photographers including Shaun Wallace, Keston Agard, Daniel Prentice, Odel Kennedy and Nathan Francis. In order to stay photo ready, Soofeyah follows the simple beauty steps of cleanse, tone, moisturize. She couples that with weekly face masks. As far as fitness she says “I work out at least twice a day, three days a week. Just kidding! My model figure honestly comes naturally, and it might even sound bad coming from a model but, I actually eat junk food on a regular basis. I don’t like to live life by diets, rules and restrictions, so I choose to enjoy my life like any other 16 year old would. I exercise now and then, but I don’t kill myself with it.” In the future Sofeeyah hopes to maximize her personality traits and meet people of varying cultures via a career in aviation. Hopefully, they watch their speech around her. Her main pet peeve is when a person says the word ‘pacific’ instead of ‘specific’.

ET&T FASHION

SCHOOL’S OUT, SUMMERTIME STYLE IS IN

ur consistently warm weather mixed with unpredictable rain interruptions means it’s always “summer” in Trinidad and Tobago. However, we’re so heavily inspired by the United States and O Europe that our fashion is almost as seasonal as theirs. We can be found wearing traditionally au-

tumn colours and even sweaters and boots at the beginning and end of the year. Similarly, when the July-September quarter comes around we get more colourful and carefree with our style choices. Here, we share some of what you can expect to see in the “school’s out/summer’s in” period. Dresses can by dressy or casual. Some of them are the perfect in between blend.

During the summertime, skin is in. Super-short distressed denim with a midriff-baring blouse is as sexy as it is simple.

Never underestimate the importance of being cozy. Relax at home in simple shorts and a vest.

omedy is often used as an escape and in some cases can transform a frown upside down. With the internet more accessible than ever, it is no surprise that many turn to online platforms for their comedic entertainment. With the added ability to share with friends and family, it has paved the way for videos to gain more traction and become viral. This, of course, encourages online content creators to always strive to create videos worth sharing. Some of our local vloggers have accepted this challenge and continuously produce content that has been shared repeatedly, leaving their fan base wanting more. Social Media also resulted in opening new doors for some such as Ro’dey, Tommy Shmurda, Ranking Kia and Certified Sampson in the formal media industry. We got T&T’s newest viral sensations to share the Hot Seat. Jamel Sampson (Certified Sampson), Jemel Cummings (Jemel the Entertainer), Keinell Garcia (Ringleader) and Kimron Ramparas (Crazy Legs Entertainment) all delivered some insight into what their vlogging journey has been like.

How it all began For Ringleader, his success as an online comedian came unexpectedly. His main focus has always been music and he started using social media to gain a following to share his musical talents. When he made his first video “Ringleader gets a call from his Jamaican GF phone" purely for fun, he soon realized that not only was it viewed multiple times, people kept asking when the next video would be released. This paved the way for his vlogging opportunity. Currently, his most viewed video “NO” is up to 300,000+ views. However, this has not stopped him from pursuing music. His recent song “Horn Med Fuh 2” according to him went viral in 48 hours in the underground market and is currently playing in clubs regionally. As for Kimron, he admitted that at 6 years old he realized he had a gift to make people laugh. He jokingly said “I was clowning around, doing silly things to make people laugh. So yeah I was chupid from young.” His story of how he first started was basically a trial run. He tested the social media platforms to gauge the response. His first video “dating in the past vs dating in the present” was a hit and so too began his vlogging career. His most viewed video received 876,623 views. Jamal admitted that although he always loved making jokes, he never saw himself as a

vlogger. It was not until one of his coworkers at a past job told him he should be on television or on social media that it really made him consider doing it. Shortly after, he started making videos and posting them online. The first video he recalled was titled “6 things moms do that we dislike.” Currently, his most viewed video generated 1.6 million views. Like Kimron, Jemel also realized his gift for making people laugh at an early age. He recalled having this ability while in primary school and had those around him constantly laughing. As for what gave him the inspiration to create his first video, it definitely was not a person, but an inanimate object, a ceramic. He fondly recalls the memory by saying “I saw the ceramic in the living room, picked it up, put on the camera and made a video. From there on I have been making videos ever since. Inspiration To constantly produce content that is relatable, engaging and funny, often times these vloggers seek some sort of inspiration either from existing comedians, their surroundings or recalling past experiences and adding a bit of humor to it. For Jamal, Kimron, and Jemel their comedic inspiration is Kevin Hart. For Keinell, it varies between Jim Carey, Marlon Wayans, and Kat Williams. However, when it comes to local talent both Jemel and Keinell agreed that Sprangalang also plays a huge inspirational role in their careers. As for adding a localized flair to it, Jamal recalls growing up and being disciplined by his mom and it often inspires his next video. For Keinell he tries to focus on what is taking place in his community and add a humorous spin to it. Kimron, on the other hand, seeks his inspirations by what is currently trending within society. Jemel admitted he gets his inspiration not from a single source, but everywhere. The impact of Social Media on daily living None of them planned on becoming vloggers. For each it was spontaneous or simply a test of the proverbial waters. They soon discovered that people wanted to see more and they were actually enjoying what they were doing. For Sampson, this was definitely a breath of fresh air as he made the risky decision of quitting his job to pursue comedy fulltime. He has since gained a large following on social me-

HOT SEAT dia and his videos have gone viral. He recalled how social media changed his life by saying “It has changed my life significantly, as it provided opportunities for me that would have been impossible otherwise. Being discovered for children’s plays, job opportunities and so much more.” As for Jemel, it changed his life both financially and socially. He said “When I go outside, people know who I am. I get free stuff (huge smile) but best of all I can travel now. That is a huge thing and something I definitely could not do while making minimum wage.” Both Keinell and Kimron shared similar sentiments commenting that social media has indeed positively impacted their lives by awarding them new opportunities and a supportive fan base. What sets them apart As for what sets each of them apart, Ringleader believes it’s his ability to be transparent and himself in front of the camera. He said “I am not acting. I am just being myself and it’s not a job I am doing.” Certified Sampson said it’s the fact that he does relatable PG-rated content. Also, the fact that he does various ethnic characters resulting in it adding different flavours to his videos. In his words “it’s like a callaloo mix.” Jemel, on the other hand, said it is based on his content having an underlying inspirational message. Kimron believes it’s his open-mindedness, his inability to have a cover for his mouth and his penchant for ‘chupidness.’ Collaborations For Kimron he would absolutely love to collaborate with Kevin Hart. He added that “Kevin Hart doesn’t try to be funny and that is what makes him most appealing.” For Sampson, he too would love to collaborate with Kevin Hart. His admiration for this comedian was expressed throughout the interview. However, locally he would love to collaborate with Ro’dey. Jemel would love to collaborate with King Bach who was one of the biggest vine stars to have existed. As for Keinell his pick would be Denzel Washington. Although not a comedian, Keinell said he is just in awe of how great of an actor he is and it truly would be a dream come true if this collaboration was to ever take place. Weirdest DM received Keinell’s answer followed a sentimental path as it was being called “Fadda of de Youth” He admitted that he never expected that when he first started. For Kimron, it was “You single ah wah?” His response “Yeah and I not looking for

change.” Sampson, on the other hand, received a DM while eating doubles in Curepe. He recalled the person saying that they are standing next to him. Jokingly he said, “It was definitely the weirdest experience, but we did chat for a short bit afterward.” As for Jemel, he attracted the eyes of a man who sought his phone number while professing his attraction for him. He said he politely responded, “Homeboy I doh bat on that team.”

Messages in each video While views are great, these vloggers hope for their videos go beyond generating a massive amount of clicks, likes, and shares. They hope to inspire the viewers… particularly the youth. As such, they hope to have brightened someone’s day. Jemel would like the youth to grasp that vlogging is not limited to America or any other foreign country. “We can use what we have and make it great.” Kimron hopes that his videos can actually result in uniting the country while making someone’s day better. “With so many things going on in the country sometimes adding a little humor to your day is exactly what you need. I hope that anyone who watches my video feels happy.” Like Jemel, Jamal also hopes that his videos inspire the youth to create. Adding “if content creating is something you want to do, then go for it.” Keinell hopes his viewers are able to learn something that can be used to elevate themselves and ideally have a better day.

Advice to upcoming vloggers Just start. This was the general advice given to upcoming vloggers. Jemel further added “Everyone who might have talent, keep your head up and start somewhere. Don’t focus too much on the things you don’t have. That will come eventually.” Kimron also added that if venturing into vlogging aim high. “Aim to reach an international market.” Keinell said negative criticism will happen. “Take it with a pinch of salt. It’s still a view, but don’t let it define you.” Jamal posited “you can do it. Don’t let doubt hold you back from doing the thing you love.” To follow these vloggers on Instagram, check out their handles below: Certified Sampson: @Certified_sampson Crazy Legs entertainment: @crazylegs_entertainment Jemel the Entertainer: @jemdstarr Ringleader: @ringleadermusic www.amgtt.com •

their niche well and when they presented patrons with their Perception event concept the response was favourable as usual. Hosted at the Canboulay restaurant and lounge, the semi-all-inclusive affair featured delicious food prepared by the venue’s master chef, as well as a host of great entertainment. The performances were animated and the audience receptive. Combined with a great ambiance, this party proved the south has vibes to rival any cardinal point. Here are a few photos of the action.

ome parties naturally S attract a stush crowd. Women attend in heels and

guys rock blazers in the tropical heat because their sole purpose is to take selfies and look good for the Gram. Sin City was not one of those parties. There was water, paint, mud and more. People were as dressed down as they could legally manage and the vibes were as hype as can be fathomed without having to call riot police. The JetLife Fam added some extra promotional magic to the pot by having Iwer George, Chennette and Lady Lava take the stage to perform for the appreciative patrons. When it was all said and done, waists no doubt needed to be realigned and laundry detergent sales were expected to see a brief hike. We were amid the muck and madness to capture the action at Docs Ranch San Fernando on July 8th.

Fatima College Grounds was the venue for Paparazzi Carnival’s 2019 presentation launch on July 7th. The Paparazzi carnival team unveiled “La Belle Epoque - A Beautiful Era" for their faithful followers as models showcased the costumes for the bands thirteen sections. The presentation was replete with colour on stage while the equally flamboyant crowd eagerly looked on. A solid entertainment cast also ensured that the event wasn’t just about staring at the scantily clad people on stage, but it created a show within the show among attendees. Here are some of the on stage sights from the launch.

FASHION POLICE SALUTES PLUS-SIZED FASHIONISTAS umanity can be inhuman at times. We often pick apart each other’s differences and if someone doesn’t fit our preferred mold, we H ostracize them. As far as fashion is concerned, women who are plus sized are regularly treated unfairly. There aren’t many clothing options available to them in stores and the few that are available reek of “past their prime” style. Luckily, people have been celebrating

our plus-sized women by opening boutiques or pageants such as the Miss Fabulous Plus TT pageant. This has given us a chance to see that our “big-boned sistas have a lot of style and class. Here are some photos from the Miss Fabulous Plus TT 2018 show which lend credence to our views that Thick Girls Indeed Rock.

CELEB PROFILE

CARDI B

Name: Belcalis Marlenis Almanzar Age: 25 (October 11, 1992) Profession: Rapper/ singer/ songwriter/ media personality Claim to fame: Cardi B (adapted from Bacardi, a famous rum brand) is a famous social media personality, songwriter, singer and former stripper of Trinidadian/Dominican descent. Her parents nicknamed her Bacardi, as a testament to her Caribbean heritage.

Hailing from The Bronx, New York, Cardi B first got the world's attention through social media with her tough and frank attitude about life as a stripper. When Cardi launched her official Instagram page, she had no idea that she would one day earn millions of followers for her 15-second submissions like ‘Tell it Like It Is’ and ‘Tirades’! In 2015, her social media notoriety led to her appearing in VH1's

reality show Love & Hip Hop: New York. She soon became one of the show’s most popular personalities. However, she left the show in 2017 to pursue music full time. That same year she released her No. 1 single "Bodak Yellow"

through Atlantic Records, and she followed with her Grammy nominated debut album in April 2018. She secretly got married to Migos group member Offset in September 2017. The couple have a baby girl together.
