EXCLAMATION POINTS! THE INSIDE SCOOP STRAIGHT FROM THE TOP Vol. 10 No. 6 June 2013

Publisher, LARA BELL Yeah! It’s June! I don’t know about you, but I am ready for the kids to be out of school and done with after school activities for a couple months. This is the time of year I’m ready to slow down the pace some and actually spend more time in sandals than stilettos! Now is when we are packing up trunks to send the kids off to camp, loading the car for family vacations and pulling out all of the pool toys. It’s also Dylan and Brooks Milam in Keystone, Colorado. Father’s Day, so in addition to wishing my dad, Katy resident Bryan Bell, a Happy Father’s Day, we are introducing you to a father of three, Kenny Bumbera, who not only plays with his children, they all work together, too. Now that is family togetherness! We hope you enjoy reading about our wedding couples highlighted in this issue as well, which makes me think of the best marriage advice I received when I got married by a well-known, happy Houston couple: “Never go to bed angry, and have date night once a week without talking about the kids!” It’s worked for me for the last ten years, so I’m passing it on to you! Have a great summer!!

K

enny Bumbera has been in the Houston automotive industry for over 35 years. A graduate of Bellaire High School, he began his career selling auto parts and moved on to become a mechanic for a local engine builder who supplied engines to A.J. Foyt and others in stock car, drag car and drag boat racing. As both the builder and driver of many types of vehicles including drag bikes, go-karts, monster trucks, stock cars, drag cars and dirt bikes, Kenny opened Bumbera’s Performance Associates along with his wife, Cheri, and three children in 1992. All three of his children have successful racing careers, and Kenny is very proud of their accomplishments in racing. Dad has been their mentor, car builder, mechanic, crew chief and car owner.

K

enny grew up in Bellaire in a quiet neighborhood but that scene changed when Kenny became old enough to build his first go-kart from scrap metal and lawn mower parts. Some would say the old neighborhood was never the same again. The go-kart was handed down, and he built a 10 hp mini-bike, which he rode to Kenny and Boyd Bumbera and from his job at Hi-Lo Auto Parts. Now that he was making real money, Kenny could afford to build his first real hot-rod: a 1966 bright yellow Mustang with a 289 and a tunnel ram. There was no doubt when Kenny was getting close to the Bellaire High School parking lot back in 1978. That unmistakable rumble was never a minute too early for class. Working for a couple of automotive shops in the Bellaire area, Kenny honed his skills on every kind of family vehicle including foreign and domestic models. However, his passion has always been on high performance vehicles. He helped build race engines for A.J. Foyt and other race teams during the 1980s. Race cars, drag boats, drag bikes, monster trucks, go-karts and dirt bikes started showing up at the shop for Kenny to work on, but he was never content to watch other people winning with his creations.

COVER STORY By Lara Bell

The

Fastest Family in Katy At the age of 15, he started racing dirt bikes. He talks about his memory of being a kid racing dirt bikes in the Astrodome. And, he laughs about an embarrassing story his mother used to tell about him building a drag bike so powerful that it left him sitting on the ground at the starting line at Houston International Speedway. It would be years later after long hours working for other people before Kenny realized his dream. He eventually got his own place, but the long hours have never gone away. Kenny enjoys a challenge and some have even said he thrives when things are on the edge of chaos. All of those late nights working for other people resulted eventually into a long list of happy customers who began to follow Kenny from Bellaire to West Houston. He became his own boss in 1992 and opened Bumbera’s Performance Associates. This 23-bay facility would serve as the home of “The Fastest Name In Town” for almost 20 years. All three of the Bumbera children attended Faith West Academy in Katy, and with the family becoming increasingly involved in the Katy community, it made perfect sense to move the family business to where the action was. One Sunday after church, the Bumbera’s happened to see that the old ABC Country Feed Store was for sale. A few days later, the Bumbera’s met Eddie and Roseanne Lopez, the owners of this historic building, and a deal was made with a handshake and a prayer. The building was transformed into a showroom, race shop, fabrication shop and general automotive repair facility and opened in Old Katy in 2011. The facility houses all of the race cars driven by the family, as well as many spectacular cars owned by their customers.

Back in 1984, Cheri thought she was marrying a guy who happened to love racing cars and had a passion for making things go fast. Little did she know that within a few months, she would be part owner of a race car and drawn into a whole new world of speed that would one day include Kenny and all three of their children driving race cars professionally. Kristin, now 25, a wife, and mother of one-year-old Bentley, started racing go-karts at the age of eight at the old Hilltop Raceway Park in Waller. She has raced all over the country in various NASCAR series and was honored at the Daytona 500 as the 2008 NASCAR Diversity Program Driver of the Year. Kristin currently competes in the NASCAR Whelen Series where she stands second in points in Texas. She recently partnered with her new sponsor, No Label Brewing, Co. another successful Katy business, for her upcoming races at Central Texas Speedway in Kyle, Texas. Kendall, now 20, is racing in the NASCAR Whelen Series part time and beginning to branch out into dirt track modified racing. She’s also a sophomore in college and plans to major in Special Education and Physical Therapy at Texas A & M. Kendall was the middle child that took her own route growing up. From the age of 6 to 13, she was very involved in horseback riding and showing. She is an excellent rider and placed top ten in the world consistently. She began her racing career at age 14, and she advanced quickly through the racing world winning Rookie of the Year titles in each of her first two years of racing. Boyd, 15, and the only son to carry on the fastest name in town, won’t let his sisters get too far ahead. He began racing cars when he turned eight and holding him back that long was very difficult. At only two-years-old, Boyd was making laps around the house in a go-kart. This was a very proud moment for Kenny who had fabricated a baby car seat into it. Kristin and Kendall are very proud of their baby brother who stands taller than both of them now. Boyd has many wins to his credit and currently races on dirt

Kendall and Kristin Bumbera

at Cotton Bowl Speedway in the Street Stock class, as well as the Allison Legacy Series on the 3/8 mile paved oval at Central Texas Speedway. He is always the youngest driver in his class but holds his own very well against veterans. No matter which member of the Bumbera family is on the track, you will find the kids in the pits serving as crew members. They are each other’s biggest fans, but on the rare occasions when

Kristin and Kendall have raced against each other, it has been tense. Much of this competitiveness comes from their father. He has a “never quit” attitude that is evident in all three of his children. He has taught them all how to race, been their mentor and all around supporter of anything the three of them have ever wanted to do.

Kristin, Boyd and Kendall Bumbera

The Bumbera kids know the dedication their dad has shown working long hours on their cars. They are right there for their Dad when he’s racing as well. In fact, you could say Kenny has raised his own little pit crew. He might have had his doubts about the whole racing thing when first two daughters came along, but those thoughts quickly faded when Kristin stuck a shop rag in her back pocket and grabbed a tire gauge in the pits. Kendall then became Kristin’s go-kart pusher as soon as she could walk. Having two daughters compete against all men in their sport is not easy for a Dad. “The good news is they are always with us, and I know where they are and what they’re doing. There’s only one seat in that race car. The bad news is they are surrounded by a bunch of men who refuse to be beat by a young girl with a ponytail and a faster car. Depending on the guys, it sometimes makes a lot more work for me to repair the body damage,” said Kenny. Racing is something the Bumbera family has been doing together for 29 years. Regardless who is buckled into the seat, the family prays together before every race first and foremost for safety. Kenny spends his spare time building and maintaining race cars for all three children but occasionally will find a day to do a little racing himself. He operates the family business, which has always been open six days a week, in addition to supporting the kids at their softball, baseball and volleyball games. He’s made time to help haul horses and three children to shows around the country for years. New memories are being made as Boyd is now old enough to help work on the cars with his Dad. They have plans to race against each other soon – a dream Boyd has had for a long time. “The best part about being a dad is getting to watch your kids grow up and become great people,” shared Kenny. “When they make the right decision, even when it’s not the easiest road to take, I know we’ve done our job.” www.absolutelykaty.com l JUNE 2013

I have to admit that I’m kind of a makeup junkie. I love this BB Cream. It is lightweight but still has great coverage with SPF 15. I am always trying new products, and I found this one at Walgreens. Very affordable! www.walgreens.com

Custom Yoga Mat If we have to work out, we might as well have a fabulous monogrammed yoga mat to carry with us. All of the colors are so bright and fun! These mats make great gifts. They come wrapped in clear cellophane with a coordinating ribbon and gift tag already attached. www.mycustomyogamat.com

Enjoy Hair and Skin Oil This oil is amazing. I use it after I wash my hair while it’s wet and then again on dry hair before I style it to protect it from the straightener or curling iron. It smells fantastic. Whatever is left on my hands, I rub onto my arms or elbows! www.enjoyhaircare.com

Dyson Digital Slim Vacuum When I received this as a gift from my husband, I was excited! I know they say don’t buy appliances or anything to do with cleaning for your wife, but I love this gadget. I can just pop it off of the wall and start vacuuming without worrying about cords. It’s very lightweight and so easy to change out the multiple attachments. It makes me want to clean! www.dyson.com

e at Simply Divine Interiors get many calls on hanging artwork, especially when moving into a new house. We also get asked how to hang a family photo collage. Picture hanging can be overwhelming at first, so just take one room at a time. If you just moved into a new home, we suggest that you lay your artwork against the walls where you think you want to hang them. Then, you can address the artwork you have left and then move it around if you need to at the end, and you haven’t made any holes in your walls yet! One of the biggest mistakes we see when people hang their own artwork is that it is too high. As a general rule, the center of the artwork should be 60 inches, which is the average eye level. You want to walk in the room and look straight into the art, not bending your neck to look up at it. Sometimes we do hang artwork higher if the client is tall, or if you have a two-story room. So how do you hang a collage of art or photos? I always lay all of the frames on the floor to get an idea of what to do. That way, I can move frames around until I get it right and then hang them. Start with the center, with the largest frame and then, work your way out from there. There is no right or wrong way, so relax! The spacing for between larger artwork is around 2 to 3 inches and when hanging smaller frames, it can be closer together, a 1 to 1.5 inch spacing. You can also move your artwork around the home. Putting a piece of art in a different area of the house can give it a whole new look, and you don’t even have to buy a new piece. You can also switch out your family photo collages to freshen things up. Remember, fixing an art hole is easy with a bit of spackle and paint. Have fun with it!

Copperwheat – Walker Wedding L inda Piazza, Len and Cheryl Copperwheat and Ricky and Rita Walker are proud to announce the marriage of their children, Stephanie Therese Copperwheat to Bradley Dale Walker, on October 20, 2012. The wedding took place at The Orchard at Caney Creek in Wharton, Texas, a beautiful setting for the perfect outdoor wedding that Stephanie always dreamed of. The bride’s younger brother, Tyler Hulbert, and close family friend Jeff Campbell officiated the ceremony. The music played softly as the crowd entered. The bridal party made their way down the aisle when the sound of a starting engine in the background grabbed the attention of all in attendance. As the engine revved, the guests stood and turned. Full of emotion, the family watched intently as the bride’s father drove his “baby” one last time in the 1972 Chevy Chevelle Convertible before she became Mrs. Bradley Dale Walker. Stephanie Copperwheat’s first ride in that car was September 11, 1983 when her parents brought her home from the hospital. The car that was once decorated in a big pink bow and “It’s a Girl!” on the back, now read, “Just Married!” The bride and groom were surrounded by over 200 guests, which included family from New York, California, Phoenix

and Dallas. A bridal party of 24 included Matron of Honor Sara Greene along with Maids of Honor Ashley Kellum and Jordyn Hulbert, sister of the bride. Kyle Cochran served as Best Man. Many personal moments perfected this special day. One of those moments was shared with the bride and her brother, Chris, as he saw his sister for the first time in her wedding dress. The bride’s father serenaded guests with I’m Leaving on a Jet Plane, a song he sang to her as a child. The bride was given away in the car she was brought home from the hospital in, and the sparkle of gold in her bouquet was her late grandmother’s wedding ring. May these moments and love follow them always and forever! Stephanie was born in Utica, New York and was raised in Katy, Texas from the age of two. She graduated from Cinco Ranch High School. The groom was born and raised in Kaufman, Texas. The couple met at Stephen F. Austin University in 2005. The bride and groom now reside in Dallas, Texas where Stephanie is a special needs teacher of deaf education in Plano ISD, and Brad is a National Logistics Manager for Cotton.

On May 11th, No Label Brewing hosted the 2nd annual silent auction and tasting event to benefit the Curing Children’s Cancer Fund (CCCF). The auction was the kick off of a much bigger campaign, Dynamo Charities “Bald is Beautiful,” in support of CCCF. For the last five years, the Houston Dynamo have hosted a “Bald is Beautiful” campaign where fans and players raise money and awareness by having their heads shaved before a home game. Pictured are Houston Dynamo forward Will Bruin and Katy-ite Rob Denton. Denton, supported the “buzz” around the fundraiser with his own buzz – he shaved his head in support of the effort as he has every year.

Roberta Anding Director of Sports Nutrition

Q:

ith summer starting and the fall sports season not too far away, it’s important that young athletes make the right food decisions – not only for improved health and nutrition, but for performance and safety as well. Knowing what foods to eat can help provide the sustained energy and promote the recovery muscles need after strenuous exercise. Roberta Anding, director of sports nutrition at Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus – part of the hospital’s Sports Medicine Program – answers one of the most common questions we’ve received about nutrition for athletes.

WHAT SHOULD MY YOUNG ATHLETE EAT FOR BREAKFAST AND OTHER MEALS?

When foods are chosen by a few basic principles, the plate becomes an ally in the prevention of chronic illness and a strategy to improve performance. The principles are simple – choose a plate rich in colorful produce, quality whole grain carbohydrates and lean protein. About half of your child’s plate should be fruits and vegetables, which are 90 percent water and can help prevent dehydration. Next, whole grain carbohydrates, such as whole grain pasta, brown rice, oatmeal and 100 percent whole wheat bread, should take up one-fourth of their plate. These high fiber foods contribute to a sense of fullness and may aid in weight reduction. If your child doesn’t like these whole grain foods, consider foods that have some whole wheat in them. There are pastas, for example, that combine white and whole wheat flours to make a less chewy product. Lastly, lean protein should be approximately one-fourth of the plate and protein should be consumed at each meal. Some protein suggestions for breakfast include flavored Greek yogurt, egg whites or Canadian bacon added to the first meal of the day. If you have questions or would like more information about the Sports Medicine Program at Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus, please call 832-227-7678 or visit westcampus.texaschildrens.org.

They both attended Texas A&M University and earned their degrees in microbiology in 2004. They went on to dental school and graduate school, UTDB and TWU, both in Houston, to earn their respective degrees so they could run a dental practice together. t’s an exciting time to be a wine lover! In today’s world, wines are available from all around the globe, and the quality of wine has improved in all price categories, leaving not much of a need to fret over a wine’s vintage. One of the largest contributors to this is the vast advancement of technologies, in both grape growing and winemaking practices, being employed by most modern countries and winemakers. The largest percentage of these advanced methods are being spearheaded in the US, mostly California, then being shared and repeated around the world. However, there are some countries that still scoff at what they consider “altering” nature and use the same techniques that have been practiced for centuries, which is usually hope, pray and take what nature gives you. We won’t mention any names as to who usually falls into this category, but their names rhyme with pItaly - pFrance. Advanced winemaking starts in the vineyard and includes a variety of things to combat rainfall and other weather-related dangers. Such innovation includes silver Mylar blankets placed at the base of crops using the sun’s reflection as a way to dry them from underneath, giant spinning propellers to prevent freezing, satellite imaging for heat variations in soil locations, steel and concrete egg fermentation tanks and countless more futuristic methods. By utilizing the most advanced technologies in regions like California, who routinely has superior weather outcomes, any wine lover can forego the need for worrying over a wine’s vintage and rest assured that even if weather conditions were not perfect, modern winery practices can assure a great outcome in every glass.
