South 80-year-old woman raped An 80-year old woman was allegedly raped by a 41-year-old vegetable vendor following which she was admitted to a hospital in a serious condition. The woman was living alone at Gopalapuram in Malliakari. Around midnight last night, Palanivel, who has two wives and four children, went to the victim's house and asked for water, but she refused. Suddenly, he forced his way into the house, allegedly raped her and bit her private parts.

SC confirms double life term for rape, murder accused

After 10 years of the rape and murder of a 23-year-old woman and the murder of her 13-month-old daughter, the Supreme Court confirmed the double life sentence awarded to the accused, K Kumar. Kumar, a plumber, murdered his sister-in-law, Vijayalakshmi, after sexually assaulting her in Yercaud near Salem in 2003. Father kills minor daughter

A three-year-old girl was allegedly killed by her father, after he "suspected" his wife's 'fidelity' in the Mancherial town of Adilabad district. Dalit woman stripped, beaten in Jalalabad

A middle-aged dalit woman was allegedly stripped, paraded naked in front of her house, tied to a tree, and then beaten by five men and two women in Kamrewala village of Jalalabad. Five of the seven dalits accused were arrested. Police said it looked like an act of revenge as the son of the 55-year-old victim was recently charged with making a nude MMS of the daughter of one of the accused men and then uploading it to the net.

NRI acquitted of killing

An NRI accused of killing of former MLA Nachattar Singh got big relief when a local court acquitted the Canada based NRI Jagdev Singh of murder charges. The court of additional district and sessions judge Karamjit Singh acquitted Jagdev of the charges for the killing of Nachattar Singh, who was father of former Punjab Director General of Police Paramdeep Singh Gill.

Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to press for a Supreme Court-monitored SIT probe into the 1984 anti-Sikh riots cases in the capital. "We want that a special investigation team be formed and it should probe the cases under the supervision of the Supreme Court," he said.

Haryana: 2 cases of alleged honour killing in Hisar

Two cases of alleged honour killings have been reported from Haryana, a state which has gained notoriety for the ghastly crime. In the first case a father allegedly murdered his daughter as he was opposed to her relationship with a boy from the same village while in the other case a young man was beaten to death by the girl's family.

Tamil Nadu government decided to ban the production, stocking, distribution and sale of tobacco products such as gutka and pan masala in the state. The government decision came against the backdrop of Supreme Court's remarks in a case pending before it seeking to know the action taken by the state government in curbing the usage of tobacco and its products. Making a statement in the assembly, chief minister J Jayalalithaa referred to her previous regime's notification on November 19, 2001, to ban the use of tobacco under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, 1954, for five years, on which the Supreme Court ruled that the Centre alone had the powers to issue such notifications. Punjab Over 10,929 cases of measles have been reported in Punjab during the last five months with an addition of 141 new cases. According to health department officials, at least 64 deaths have been reported so far while most deaths occurred in Lahore, Gujranwala, Rajanpur, Rahim Yar Khan and Kasur. 141 cases of measles were reported from Punjab, including 52 from city hospitals. It was found that a majority of deaths in Lahore were caused by severe pneumonia and delay in reaching hospitals.
