Plan For The Expected – But Prepare For The Unexpected To enjoy a comfortable retirement lifestyle, you’ll need to have adequate financial resources in place. And that means you must plan for the expected — but prepare for the unexpected. Consider these factors: Your vision of your retirement lifestyle — What do you want to do during your retirement years? Spend more time with your family? Volunteer? Open your own business? Your expectations of your retirement lifestyle will dictate, to a large extent, your savings and investment strategies. Your expenses — Once you’ve established a vision for your retirement lifestyle, you can begin to estimate the expenses you expect to incur during your retirement years. Your income — You can expect to receive income from a variety of sources: Social Security, pensions, part-time employment and investments, such as your IRA, 401(k) and any taxable investment accounts you may have. You’ll need to estimate about how much income all these sources could provide. Your withdrawal rate — If your investments are going to provide a significant part of your retirement income, you need to carefully manage annual withdrawals from your portfolio. Your withdrawal rate is key in helping to ensure your portfolio provides for your needs as long as you need it. Your portfolio reliance rate — Related to your portfolio withdrawal rate is your portfolio reliance rate — how much you rely on your portfolio to provide income. For instance, if you will need $50,000 per year in retirement, and $30,000 will come from your portfolio, your reliance rate will be 60% ($30,000 divided by $50,000). Your reliance

Elly Dalton

rate will help determine how sensitive your strategy might be to outside events, such as market fluctuations. While you need to be familiar with these expected elements of your retirement, you also must be prepared for the unexpected aspects, such as these: Living longer than you expect — How long you can expect to live is somewhat of a mystery. If you were to live longer than you anticipate, would you be financially prepared? To help make sure your money lasts throughout your lifetime, you may need to consider investments that can provide you with a lifetime income stream. And your longevity will obviously also affect your annual portfolio withdrawal rate. Inflation — At an average inflation rate of three percent, your cost of living will double in about 24 years. That’s why, even in retirement, you will need some growth-oriented investments, such as quality stocks to ensure you can maintain your desired retirement lifestyle. But if the unexpected happens, and inflation takes off at a much higher than average level, you may need to consider a greater amount of investments that offer the potential for rising income. Health care — Even after you’re on Medicare, which won’t cover everything, you need to prepare for the unexpected, such as a lengthy illness or the need for some type of long-term care. You may also wish to “self-insure” to a certain extent by setting aside funds in a liquid, stable account. By positioning your investment portfolio for both the expected and the unexpected, you can go a long way toward enjoying the retirement lifestyle you seek. So plan ahead — and make the necessary adjustments as time goes by.

Welcome Back!

Welcome back students, teachers, parents, volunteers, and staff; we look forward to another great school year! Please take note of the following changes for high school students this year. First, the Georgia Department of Education plans to phase out the Georgia High School Graduation Test and will put more emphasis on the End of Course Test (EOCT) for graduation requirements. Students currently take an EOCT as part of their grade. Second, the NCAA made changes on accepting credit recovery for athletes who wish to play college sports. Lastly, requirements to obtain the HOPE Scholarship for college funding have changed to include more rigorous and Advanced Placement (AP) coursework. These changes are outlined in our Parent Handbook for you to review with your child. We have focused on increasing rigor for all students and have increased the number of students choosing to enroll in honor courses and AP. Our Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) results indicate our students are outperforming the state in every subject and every grade tested. All three of our high schools and the Rockdale Career Academy (RCA) were named AP Honor Schools by the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement. We will continue our commitment to providing students with rigorous and challenging coursework so they are well prepared for a successful future. We maintain our highest graduation rate since the accountability measurement was established in 2001 by providing a variety of learning opportunities so that each student can pursue their goals and aspirations. These include the Magnet School for Science and Technology, Career Academy, Open Campus, Virtual Campus and innovative credit recovery options. We are expanding Virtual Campus course offerings to keep pace with students who thrive in this type of learning environment. Our Early Learning Initiative provides children and families with the necessary skills for our youngest learners to be prepared and ready to enter kindergarten. In addition, The Early Learning Center at RCA just received the highest national accreditation possible. We opened the Rockdale County High School Annex which allowed for more classroom space and expansion of the Magnet program. The new state-of-the-art labs give students the ability to work on college-level research and science projects. We will continue to see campus improvements which are funded through the SPLOST. Our Strategic Plan serves as the blueprint for our work and continuous improvement. Many of the programs mentioned above were developed through the implementation of our first five-year plan. Work on our next five-year plan has begun using a microcosm of the community who came together to review, revise and renew our mission, vision, beliefs, objectives and strategies. Additional stakeholder groups are working to put action plans and steps in place for each of the new strategies. We appreciate the support of the parents, teachers, students, community members and staff who have dedicated their time and expertise to strengthen our school system. Once again, I would like to urge parents to stay involved with their child’s education and encourage their student to work hard and dream big. Please visit our website at www.rockdale.k12.ga.us for information and useful resources. Thank you for your support and involvement in education.
