THE MET GALA

UNVEILED MANUS X MACHINA BY LARA BECHALANY

The first Monday of May in New York is quite the big deal; A-list celebrities flock to the MET museum on 5th avenue and walk the annual MET gala red carpet in custom-made creations by the world’s most coveted designers. 2016’s gala was no different from the others; on the contrary, with a theme entitled “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology”, we witnessed a sea of gowns that transported us to the future. ABODE takes a closer look inside the MET ball and this year’s star-studded event.

KATY PERRY

Katy Perry takes costume galas very seriously it seems. The singer goes all out in an elaborate Prada gown accentuated with a Tamagotchi toy, theatrical makeup, and a fierce black wig!

12

THE NIGHT’S SHOWSTOPPING LOOKS

JOURDAN DUNN

RACHEL MCADAMS

The stunning model turned heads in her Balmain armourinspired gown that fit her like a glove.

Rachel McAdams was simply lovely in her Valentino dress which featured heavy gold details and script embroidery all over the skirt. The actress completed her look with dark lips and a pair of Jimmy Choos.

KRISTIN STEWART

The actress impressed at this year’s MET gala for her walk down the red carpet. Stewart chose a laced silk Chanel dress with equally stunning sparkly boots and further upped her game with striking silver eye shadow and a blonde updo.

BEYONCÉ

Beyoncé was the talk of the MET thanks to her latex or "Slaytex"as many called it- gown by Givenchy. The puff-sleeved nude beaded gown sent the BeyHive (and the Twitterverse) into a frenzy all night! This was Beyoncé in all her glory and she emerged a winner, as usual.

CINDY CRAWFORD

Cindy Crawford’s still got it! The ageless model sizzled in a liquid silver Balmain dress with structured sheer panels.

EMILY BLUNT

Emily Blunt flaunted her fresh-faced pregnancy glow in a skin tight Michael Kors dress. The stunning Brit had no problem showing off her bump in this form fitting dress.

THE VENUE

The Met Gala- also known by its formal name, "The Costume Institute Gala" and commonly referred to as the MET Ball, is an annual fundraising event that benefits the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. Active since 1971, the annual event celebrates a specific theme every year and invites the world’s most famous faces to match the theme of the exhibit for their walk down the red carpet. New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art is the largest art museum in the United States and among the most visited art museums in the world. The venue welcomes this fundraiser and exhibition which runs for several months following the star-studded ball in early May. The gala represents the main source of funding for the institute, to the extent that more than

14

$9 million were raised in 2013 and a record $12 million in 2014. The numbers are justified thanks to individual ticket prices that soar up to $25,000 per person. Rumour has it that the prices were recently raised by $10,000 to maintain the exclusivity of the soireé. Fashion royalty Anna Wintour, who just happens to be Vogue’s editor-in-chief, has been the chairwoman of the event since 2005. As matriarch of the ball, Wintour oversees the guest list and is rumoured to hand-pick the stars who are invited to this coveted fashion extravaganza. As chairwoman, Wintour also gets to handpick the ball’s honorary chairpersons - this year’s included Idris Elba, Taylor Swift, Nicolas Ghesquiere, Karl Lagerfeld, and Miuccia Prada.

MANUS X MACHINA 2016’s theme focused on “Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology”. The idea behind the theme allows fashion aficionados to highlight the difference between handmade haute couture and machine-made fashion. Explaining the theme in depth, Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute, said: “Traditionally, the distinction between the haute couture and prêt-à-porter was based on the handmade and the machine-made. But recently this distinction has become increasingly blurred as both disciplines have embraced the practices and techniques of the other.”

“Art Therapy”

Jowhara Mohammed

27-Year-old Jordanian/Qatari Jowhara Mohammed a.k.a ‘jay’ has the world at her fingertips. When our editor discovered her work on instagram, we knew we wanted to showcase this amazing talent. We finally met and she was engaged, yet relaxed and very expressive with her hand movements. This seemed to fit, given these are her master tools. As we chatted, she recalled her journey through art and I imagined her at work; gently in a flow, calm and focused. It soon became clear that Jay represents much of what qatari youth is all about - discovering your true passion and potential and transforming it into reality.

ABODE: What got you into art and illustration in particular? One of my early teachers encouraged me and made me fall in love with drawing. Also, my mother is a talented drawer. When we were younger I remember her sketching beautiful faces and big eyes and I was always very inspired by that. I love pencil. I would go so far as to say i am addicted to it! I do also love watercolour. It’s magical. I am taken to a new world when working with the movement of the colours with water. It’s like being in the spa!

ABODE: You are clearly very talented. Have you studied art or are you selftaught? I never studied art in further education but i have been taking the community art classes with VCU Qatar which are excellent. I want to be more active in the field. I am very consumed by my day job in media so i want to move my art on and I felt this was the best way to do it. Sometimes you get artist’s block. I had been

blocked for some time and the community classes have unlocked those channels again. Youtube is good to find inspiration but we all have our own techniques so mostly i am self-taught by practising and I also use online resources for inspiration.

ABODE: Much of your work is of female faces and poses. Why is that? I relate to them and I like to create stories. Mainly through poses and faces, yes, but more recently I have been getting into drawing still life. I choose pictures and change the features and the hair for example. But it is the pose that draws me in and intrigues me. I love to think about what's behind the pose and expression. What is she thinking? Then i can create my own story around this. I can’t draw people i know, though! It’s weird! I really don’t know why. There is not a real message that i’m trying to send, rather just to evoke perspective. A look or a pose may represent your or my perception of peace or beauty for example but our options will rarely be the

21

same. My auntie continually asks me why the ladies i draw look so sad. I don’t ever see them as being sad. It’s a really interesting part of the process.

ABODE: What moves you to draw? How does it make you feel? It’s meditation for me. It soothes me. It makes me calm working in that much depth and detail, especially when i’m sketching hair. Sometimes i just want to draw hair!

ABODE: You created this article cover piece for us this month in celebration of Ramadan. Tell us about that. It is essentially a watercolor portrait with with Arabic vibes. It includes bright and vibrant colors which really reflected my feelings whilst i was creating it at each specific moment. I wanted to create the patterns and backgrounds to capture the look and feel of Ramadan in the drawing because Ramadan and art are both very spiritual. The cultural and Islamic arts have always been interesting yet not specified to Ramadan only. That said, incorporating the meaning and feeling of the holy month into any piece of art is very calming.

ABODE: What is the local art scene like here in Qatar? It’s been exploding recently. It’s very surprising and exciting and i am especially impressed by the very young talent. I do feel like i am not yet fully integrated into the scene, though. I am still hiding a little bit. I don’t know why. I am trying to build up my confidence and be more open. This is something i’m working on. Art is a great catalyst for this and can help me to grow as a person.

ABODE: Who inspires you and why? Leonardo da Vinci is my ultimate inspiration. Not just because of his talent for art but because he was just a brilliant human being. He captivates me. Recently with the emergence of social media, we have a lot of inspiration to draw from. I love Instagram and enjoy checking out other artists work on there. A favourite is @esrarois. Her work is actually very similar to mine so i can relate to that.

ABODE: Would you like to take on art as a career and are your family supportive? My family are very supportive. My mum used to love drawing but she gave it all up for us. She used to draw and paint when we

22

23

were kids but we would come along and mess up her work, but she didn’t mind. Now she’s is my closest confidant. She knows me best and is the best person to give me honest feedback. Also, my sisters who are like my best friends don’t hold back with their opinions on my work. They are brutally honest, which is great as i can grow and learn from that.

ABODE: Tell us about a project or drawing that’s personal to you. Right now i am working on a secret project. It has been the most rewarding project so far and it really has a lot of personal resonance for me. I can’t tell you any details but i will tell you it’s on quite a large scale and is very exciting! I can’t wait to share it with the world when it’s all ready.

ABODE: In your opinion, what makes a great artist? You need to be persistent and not afraid to explore your own style. Keeping an open mind, too. If you think of it as a form of meditation and therapy the results will shine through. Patience is the key and pencil teaches you patience.

ABODE: How much do you think one is born with a talent for art versus what one can learn? It depends on the individual but i know you can’t be taught to give soul to a painting. You have to have that innate ability to soak up all of the inspiration and learning. You also have to love it. If you don’t, it will show in the work.

ABODE: Fashion illustration has become very ‘en vogue’, especially within the art fraternity on Instagram. Why do you think that is? It’s smart marketing and is a clever way to reach many pairs of eyes. It’s not my way, however. I want my art to make its way in the world on its own merits. For example, i don’t want to show my work at an exhibition just because my friend knows the gallery owner. I want my pieces to talk and then i will get the chance.

ABODE: What are your dreams as an artist? Right now i am just working on improving my skill and then i will see what i can do. I feel like i have been somewhat

24

diverted from the path i should be on so i am trying to navigate back to art which is my true passion. I would love to be qualified as an artist and do this for a living so we shall see! I will take it step by step. Like this interview opportunity - it’s the first time i have shown my work in public. It’s a big step but a positive one. I am not afraid to experiment and see where this journey takes me.

ABODE: Finally, we’d like to wish you Ramadan Kareem! And to you! Ramadan is our absolute favourite time of the year. We get to connect with friends and family and it’s so spiritual for us. We just really enjoy the whole meaning of this time of year and we miss it when it’s not ramadan!

RAMADAN SPECIAL

#SeeKhansa'sWorld through her own eyes

31

Khansa is a blogger based in Doha and is changing the way we perceive our surroundings. By capturing her experiences and sharing it with us all on social media she is retelling a story of Qatar that shows us the true beauty of our country. She is a hijabi woman who relies purely on her own creativity rather than a carefully constructed image of herself, as bloggers today so often rely on for success. We encouraged her to turn away from her lens and chat with us but for a moment, before she ventures onto yet another exciting project.

ABODE: Give us a brief overview of yourself and how you have spent your life here and the things that you are currently doing in Qatar? I was born in Doha, therefore, my social identity is strongly based in this country. I am the fifth among six siblings and I grew up having a lot of friends. I studied Computer Engineering at Qatar University on a full scholarship and was chosen to represent my university at a mobile app contest in Abu Dhabi. However, I have deviated from my major quite a bit, and my career is more based around my blog now - I work as a social media consultant on a project basis. Also, history has always fascinated me - art, architecture, social upliftment and empowerment is an inspiration to me. Living in my world is beautiful in the sense that I have a strong support system around me - my parents, my husband, and my siblings (my younger brother deserves a special mention here). I have a great group of friends from university who am very much in touch with, and we always find opportunities to hang out together!

got the chance to interview lots of talented people. I enjoyed documenting inspirational stories and before long, I knew I wanted to be a blogger! To me, engineering was simply black and white while blogging added the colour that I needed in my career.

ABODE: What is your favourite subject you talk about? What draws you into focusing on that? As much as I love blogging about lifestyle - things to do in Qatar or great restaurants in Doha - the creativity in anything is my focal point, hence my name Creativity with Kay. The passion a chef puts into creating his/her masterpiece of a dish, the skills an architect puts into constructing a monument or the inspiration that has perfumers creating new fragrances, this is the creativity upon which I focus. I use a hashtag #DiscoverWithMe on Instagram which is just a way of saying, “Hey, here’s something creative that I came across.

ABODE: The holy month of Ramadan is upon us again. How do you practice your faith during this special time?

Well, there were many things that got me into this. While I was studying at University, I interned in a marketing position at a fashion company. I used to maintain their blog for them, and whilst there I

I am always excited about Ramadan! Ramadan is one month of training yourself to be a better person than who you were before it began - more patient, more tolerant, more empathetic, more

ABODE: You are a well-known blogger. What is it that pulled you towards your vocation of capturing life through your lens?

32

generous. It is a month to practice frugality as much as possible. Be as generous, not only charity wise but also personality wise as well. Ramadan is that beautiful time of the year to put a hold on all of our bad personality traits and improve on them. As is the routine, I start off with a light meal for suhoor right before the call for the Fajr prayer, and fast all the way until the call for Maghrib (sunset) prayer. Obviously, I would like to spend it with people who are close to me. For me, it is a time to declutter my mind. More so to rejuvenate and to rid myself of negative thoughts. I am incredibly thankful that we are blessed with a month like this. Everyone tends to forget this but Ramadan is a month of fasting, not feasting.

ABODE: How has wearing a hijab been of personal benefit to you? The hijab has helped me to become who I am. It has made me much stronger than who I would otherwise have been and has helped me build up my confidence. To put it simply, it is kind of like my superman’s cape. I know when I am in it I won’t be judged by anyone for my looks, or for my physical appearance. The only

judgment anyone can make is based on my character which I portray through my words as I speak or write. Therefore, it has made me think about the words I speak. To me, the hijab represents freedom. I read a book once called “Reclaim your heart” by Yasmin Mogahed, and a perfect answer that I always respond with when asked about hijab is “With my Hijab, I put my faith on display, rather than my beauty. My value as a human is defined by my relationship with God, not by my looks. I cover the irrelevant and when you look at me, you don’t see a body. You view me only for what I am: a servant of my Creator”

ABODE: If you can explore and spread the beauty of Islam, how would you communicate that to your followers? Every aspect of Islam has so much beauty when you dive deep into the significance of its teachings. For me, it is the character that Islam wants us to have as a person, that is very beautiful. Islam is more than my religion, it is my lifestyle; the etiquette, rights, and duties. For me, there is still a lot of it left to learn from. It is not only limited to the prayers, hijab, fasting, and Hajj which is most talked about.

WITH MY HIJAB, I PUT MY FAITH ON DISPLAY, RATHER THAN MY BEAUTY. MY VALUE AS A HUMAN IS DEFINED BY MY RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD, NOT BY MY LOOKS. I COVER THE IRRELEVANT AND WHEN YOU LOOK AT ME, YOU DON’T SEE A BODY. YOU VIEW ME ONLY FOR WHAT I AM: A SERVANT OF MY CREATOR - Yasmin Mogahed

Neutrality sees a utilitarian based story give an urban feeling. With a predominantly navy, black and grey colour palette, this makes for a great transitional story, adding highlights of oatmeal and tobacco to give it that fresh update for spring. Shoreline demonstrates the emphasis on blue tones for spring. Ranging from deep dark navy to indigo and bleached-out pale shades, it’s the colour of the season. This story has a real coastal influence, with the Breton stripe of huge importance, paired with an ankle grazing turned-up chino. Past Modern is our sharp, hard-edged tailoring story inspired by the rebellious attitude of the Teddy Boy and rock and roll music. What would otherwise be a dark colour palette of charcoal greys and inky blues is now given a fresh new slant with stones and neutrals.

When famous celebrities such as the Kardashians, Vanessa Hudgens, Katy Perry, Rita Ora and more sport the look, it's usually the most ‘tutorialed’ do of the week. The hairstyle itself is achievable with all hair types and is a gorgeous way to keep your hair under control!

EMBELLISHED The most prevalent 2016 runway trend was embellished hair. The trick for this trend is to make a statement without over powering the look. Hair embellishments are perfect for both special occasions and casual, everyday hairstyles. It all weighs down to how you use your hair accessories. Ramadan is perfect for adding a little bit of extra glitz to your look.

Kettlebell/Dumbbell Swing

Reverse Lunge and Rotation Medicine ball in hands, arms outstretched, reverse lunge backwards and then rotate at the torso to the same side as the forward leg. Feel your waist as you return the ball to out in front and change legs, repeating on the other side

Place feet hip-width apart and let the kettlebell hang between your legs. Hinge at the hips and knees as if you were sitting down in a chair. Keeping your chest up and open with shoulders relaxed, fire from the legs and glutes to rise to a standing position. The kettlebell should pendulum naturally to approximately chest height.

Renegade Row

Squat Thrusters

Take a dumbbell in each hand, setting up for push ups. Using your core to stabilise your position, draw one elbow back as far as you can, keeping it close to your body. Focus on the abs and a nice squeeze in the shoulder blades let you know when to lower the weight back down and swap sides.

Begin in the same position as the renegade row. Hop your feet into your chest and lift up into a standing position. To maximise results, add a shoulder press at the top of the move to fire up your whole body

Roll Up This one starts in the best way possible! Lie down on your mat and extend your arms out behind you. Legs may stay straight or bent depending on your ability level. In a smooth move, extend the arms overhead and “peel your body off the mat until you are seated upright, ensuring that your neck remains long and smooth. Eating for the planet; An Introduction to a Vegan Diet

"Nothing will benefit human health and increase the chances for survival of life on earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet." — Albert Einstein A question many people ask when thinking about a vegan diet goes something along the lines of ‘So, what do you eat, salads?’ Or, basically, without meat, what’s left to eat? I’m so glad you asked! International Restaurant of the Month T RrO TE A s To w e

at ai a Dub Rota n

With views across Sheikh Zayed road, world-class cuisine, and a romantic setting, it is no wonder Teatro at Towers Rotana Dubai is one of the most acclaimed restaurants in Dubai.

On our menu for the evening was their most popular (and certainly tastiest) starter, the prawn tempura. Crunchy and delicious, this is the ideal way to break the ice on a first date. Up next for mains was the delectable Chilean sea bass marinated with miso. I have eaten in many restaurants in Dubai but this dish was by far a favourite of mine. Light and full of flavour, I highly recommend it. Following our

delectable main course, we had just enough room for the piece de la resistance, the dessert! It came in the form of a flame torched baked Hawaiian – layered with pineapple, coconut and vanilla ice cream covered in burnt meringue, lilikoi coulis and fresh berries! Super fresh on the palette yet light and creamy. A must for the dessert aficionados out there! We experienced the best of what Teatro had to offer and what's more, the very hospitable restaurant manager Pat takes the time to come to each table every night and greet guests with a smile. Having earned its reputation and stood the test of time as one of Dubai’s favourite dining venues, Teatro has transformed culinary experiences into a performance of art with the chefs in their starring roles. It’s theatrical and eclectic décor, attentive service and a wide range of fine beverages with an inviting ambience has certainly proved to be the right recipe for dining success! By Annabel Rooney Images courtesy of Towers Rotana Dubai Image: www.cool-cities.com

I had the pleasure of treating my family to a night out with Hollywood stars (they were sadly only on the wall) and boy did we have fun! Upon entering Teatro, the first thing that catches the eye is the glorious display of 3 massive bowls suspended from the ceiling full of every cork ever popped since it’s opening in 2001. Dim lighting, low ceilings and private table settings all add to the romantic feel of the place. This multiple award-winning restaurant is one of the hottest fine dining restaurants in the city and sets itself apart by offering different cuisines such as Japanese, Chinese, Indian and Italian all in the same venue.

A Cool Home

IS A COOL YOU! Ideas on how to make your house light and breezy this summer season by Malwina Studzinska, Marketing Coordinator, IDdesign Interviewed by Hairiya Santos

NORDIC ABODE: How does the décor of a house reflect the personality of the owner? What does it say about the people living in it? When you think of an interior you always have to see it from the perspective of the end user and function. Namely, a designer should ask themselves questions – who is this space for and what purpose will it serve? A task that I always try to do in my mind is the so-called storytelling. First, I have a chat with my client, hence the purpose of the “Meeting a designer” campaign at IDdesign Doha. We have a loose conversation about the room itself, however, I always try to squeeze as much information as possible within that time. This is where the four styles suggested by IDdesign are so helpful. By looking at four general psychological profiles, we get a chance to organise our thoughts and needs. Global style is for those who want to be associated with a profusion of cultural influences, Modern Classic is for those who seek timeless elegance and want a taste of luxury in their everyday routine, Nordic style is peaceful

50

Got any renovation plans this coming summer season? Long summer days are coming and will no doubt be difficult to endure so beat the heat with these cool, effective ideas straight from the experts. There’s no better way to start your day than waking up feeling relaxed and calm.

and balanced and Romance, for those who like to drift away, not just in dreams but in the cosiness of their own abode. All in all, knowing the function is the path that a designer has to take to create a vision for his customer.

ABODE: Can you name three important factors to consider when redecorating our home especially for the summer season? The summer season in Qatar can be compared to the winter time in Scandinavia; it is the time when we spend more time at home. In winter we normally tuck in a warm cosiness, for instance, by a fireplace. In the hot climate we also look for the warmth but in a diverse meaning – we want to feel homely among the cold wave of air

MODERN CLASSIC yet solid. Inspired by woods and natural materials, it transforms elements from nature into light, giving a relaxing feeling that you mention. All this, however, is achieved by a well-balanced choice of furniture and accessories. The tones are gentle or so-called “nude”, often featuring white with gray tones as the foundation colours. Playful accents add character. Everything remains in a perfect balance - simple, proportional, contemporary, and functional. Most importantly, however, is that it feels like home and allows you to add your own personal character via small additions like one colourful rug, chair or cushion!

GLOBAL conditioning which kills the ambiance in a room. Combined with overhead bulbs, they make you feel as though you are in a workplace instead of a home. Therefore, I would say that the three most important factors for redecorating our home for the summer season would be the light and space. Our inner sense of comfort has to be well fed so we are not suppressed yet draw all the energy needed to live to the full and be creative.

ABODE: If you want to add color to your home, which hue would be best to attain a cool relaxing feeling? I am a fan of Scandinavian style so personally, I would recommend the Nordic style. Let me explain why. It is distinct - minimalistic yet elegant, organic

For the miso tomato sauce Lightly sautĂŠ the chopped garlic, onion in the olive oil until the onion is soft but not burnt, then add the tinned tomatoes, miso paste. Reduce the heat and leave to stew for 15 minutes. Once done, strain the mixture through a fine strainer to make it smooth. Do not add any salt as miso is already salty.

For the Shrimp Salmon Angels Butterfly the jumbo prawns and wrap the salmon sashimi around the baby asparagus. Use the bamboo skewers to hold it in place and repeat this for both jumbo prawns. Once done, coat the outside of each Katsu ball with potato starch and set aside.

For Fry Coating Heat the sunflower or rapeseed oil to 180oC, mix the chilled water, eggs and tempura flour together and then dip the shrimp salmon into the mixture and follow with dipping them into the panko bread crumbs. Then place them directly into hot oil to cook for 6-8 minutes. Be careful not to burn yourself while doing this and avoid hot oil spitting. Once cooked, remove and place on a paper towel to drain away any excess oil. PRESENTATION In a rimmed bowl place 1 ladle of the miso tomato sauce, slice open each of the two salmon shrimp angels and slice each Katsu ball into equal half-moons. Place into the bowl on top of the Miso tomato sauce, and add fresh basil as the garnish. Slap the basil in between your hands before placing onto the plate to release the aroma. Fry the jumbo prawn antenna's and place on top of the finished dish for added garnish effect (optional)

Boulangerry Blogs Dining Outside the ABODE What makes an eatery stand out? For me, it’s less the smoke and mirrors and more about the core idea of what is being served and why. Of course, every business is out to make money, but is there something more? I’m looking for the passion behind the brand, and this month I found two Doha spots that deliver this in volumes! By Gerald Tan

Flat White Flat White Coffee – necessity, addiction or lifestyle? No matter which camp you fall in, Flat White has you covered. It’s a unique craft coffee shop; it’s not from abroad, it’s not a chain, and it doesn’t offer 25 different unpronounceable, sugarsaturated coffee infusions. Instead, Flat White serves just a few espresso-based drinks (with flat white, the Antipodean take on a less foamy cappuccino being the house specialty) and water temperature-controlled coffee using hand-brewing tools. The two Qatari owners are certified baristas building their business on a simple philosophy: a meticulously made cuppa. Right now, Flat White is located inside The Oyster showroom of The Pearl-Qatar, with a standalone shop opening soon. Everyday Restaurant On my first visit, I left Everyday Restaurant feeling as though I’d been to my aunt’s house for lunch. The Chinese dishes are straightforward and

56

unadorned, which translate into honest flavours that remind me of home. There are dumplings and stir-fries, wok-kissed and delivered hot in no premeditated order except for when they are ready. The braised eggplant with minced meat is a little umami disco while the seafood lo mein arrives so colourful with different vegetables. It invites you to start detangling with your chopsticks! Communication can be slightly tricky, but it’s still easy to order because a picture accompanies each item on the menu. What sets Everyday Restaurant apart from those in its league is the perfectly seasoned food -- neither too greasy nor too salty. Located on Al Jazeera Street in Bin Mahmoud, it’s a little treasure worth your time and calories.

Writing about my experience of Quick Bites, I can't imagine a better place to relax, have good food, and spend time with nice people. It has a colourful, delightful decoration with a lovely light, bright, spacious feel to it with a fantastic long counter displaying sweet and savoury items. From the first moment I entered, the staff were welcoming; they make this restaurant come alive and they are an absolute credit to the hotel. I have eaten here few times now and each member of the staff takes great care in their craft. The food is always brought in a timely manner and is attentive and tasty as it should be. Definitely worth a visit as the atmosphere and the ambience is so relaxing.

Assortment of Tapas

Talking about the meals served, the star of the day was the Marriott burger which consists of real Angus beef served with crispy fries. Another menu option to try is the brick oven flatbread with smoked salmon, caramelised onion, goats cheese feta and rocket. Also, try the roasted butternut salad with rosemary rub, pomegranate, feta crumble and toasted pine nuts. It would be a shame if I didn’t mention the fresh colourful juices, which were outstanding; very fresh, and healthy, it completed the whole experience. What a lovely little surprise tucked into an inconspicuous corner of the Marriott Marquis. This is a definitely a great place to eat, a place where you will never be disappointed with the food and the exceptional service. Simply its a lovely cafe with wonderful hosts and excellent service! The InterContinental Doha The City is a luxurious city centre business-oriented hotel that repeatedly exceeds my expectations on every visit. The first attractive feature of the hotel is the staff itself. Available at every turn, they spread a warm welcome to all their guests. They are accommodating and helpful towards their guest's needs, they will not rest until you are fully satisfied. When you are in a hotel, you want to be treated like a VIP, and that's exactly how I feel while I am here; that is one of the many factors I look for when staying in any hotel in any part of the world. The check in was fast and smooth; we were very comfortable and well rested in our designated room

on the 36th floor with a stunning view of West Bay. Upon entering the room, you have a big wardrobe next to a spacious, comfy bed. The bathroom is fit for a king, featuring a deep bathtub, big mirrors and a shower rivalling any other hotel in Doha. I was very impressed with the quality and neatness of the room. I have to mention that this was a celebration of mine and my husband's 4th wedding anniversary and the first thing we noticed upon entering the room was a big bunch of beautiful flowers. Attention to detail and making every guest feel at home is the InterContinental Doha The City's top priority. After having some rest and enjoying the room amenities, we headed over to Prime, the awardwinning steak house. Prime promises the finest selection of cuts consistently cooked and seasoned to perfection. Prime’s relaxed and comfortable setting combined with its exquisite cuisine will surely make for a memorable dining experience. Every time I have eaten in Prime I have been pleased with the food and the service. As we couldn’t manage to have our dessert in the restaurant, we asked to have it in our room and they were delighted to serve it there. After a restful sleep, our beautiful one night stay at the InterContinental Doha The City came to an end. I would recommend this place to anyone and I am sure everyone will enjoy thoroughly as we did. I simply cannot wait to check-in again.

Your home away from home; The DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Doha - Old Town

T

he DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Doha Old Town is somewhat of a hidden gem. It is situated only 10 minutes from Hamad International airport and is in close proximity to the bank district and cultural sites such as the Museum of Islamic Art and the authentic Souk Waqif. DoubleTree by Hilton Doha Old town is the perfect location for the staycation enthusiasts among us, business travellers, and the adventurous tourist.

I spent one night at this relatively new hotel and to my surprise, I found a luxurious establishment in the heart of Doha’s Old Town. Upon arrival, I was treated to a signature warm chocolate chip cookie and quickly and efficiently checked into my room (I was unexpectedly upgraded!). My spacious king guest room offered panoramic city views with floor-to-ceiling windows, and from the moment of my arrival I was made to feel right at home with a wardrobe, a desk and complimentary Wi-Fi. The stunning suite offered views of the harbour and tea/coffee was also available with a plentiful selection of nibbles and refreshments from the mini fridge. A restful night's sleep awaited me in the luxurious king-sized bed and in the stylish bathroom I was able to choose to relax or refresh in either the large bathtub or walk-in rainfall shower. Lucky me! After settling in and unpacking, I made my way up to the rooftop sky lounge dubbed ‘Pure’. I had heard about the magnificent view and had to check it out for myself. So, with my fruity refreshment in hand, I scanned the breath-taking skyline views of the Arabian Gulf and Doha's Corniche, sat back and relaxed to the soulful music that filled my ears, and nibbled on Mediterranean-inspired dishes from the menu. Simply magic. After a wonderful evening on the rooftop, the luxury baby soft bed fit for a king awaited. I could not commend The DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Doha Old Town enough after opening such a short time ago yet still managing to be so refreshing and contemporary, efficient and ready to attend to my every need. Their staff were nothing but friendly and were clearly dedicated to providing me with a personalised service throughout my stay. They call it CARE (Create A Rewarding Experience). From my arrival to my departure — and everything in between — they went above and beyond to make me feel cared for! Interview by Hairiya Santos

ABODE: Your artwork captures the faces of many fascinating people, particularly those with Asian heritage. What is the story behind it? As a westerner, everything from the East is exotic, it needs to be seen and explored. So when my husband, a pilot, told me 13 years ago that Doha would be our new home base, I was more than excited. Having a pilot husband means loads of travel and when I do travel, I love taking lots of pictures of fascinating people, especially Asians. Their smile, the way they dress, the way they walk, their laugh all inspires me.

ABODE: What kind of effect do you want your artworks to have on an observer? Most of my subjects aren’t smiling, they are dramatic. When you look at a painting, the subject is usually smiling and your assumption is that the person is happy. However, if the person isn’t smiling it allows many more questions to surface about the person in the artwork; are they sad, are they reflecting back on a memory, etc. Those are the questions I want people to be confronted with when they first look at my paintings. They create the story through the faces and I create the background through the photography. I am very careful about the choice of my photos. My work is only finished when emotion is captured in all of its glory.

ABODE: What would you consider to be your greatest achievement so far? Exhibiting at the Intercontinental Doha The City is a great achievement. It's like having my personal gallery. We had a wonderful opening last year with a special guest, His Excellency Adrian Norfolk, the Ambassador of Canada and this year we launched seven new paintings with special guest His Excellency Eric Chevallier, the Ambassador of France. Such unforgettable moments! I feel so privileged to be able to contribute to the art scene in Doha.

ABODE: You use interesting mediums when you begin to create. Can you tell us a bit more about this? Yes, I tend to use clay, acrylic and oil paint, gypsum bodies, drifting wood pieces; I use so many different materials to create with. Where I really feel at my most creative is with my photo transfer. I don’t feel alone; I always have someone with me. When the dialogue between myself and the images I have taken come to life, it’s magic. There really are no limits, I feel I can express myself with all kinds of materials!

ABODE: Among several well-known artists, who inspires you? I love Louis Boudreault, a talented artist from Montreal-Quebec. He has a beautiful, naïve way of drawing and painting. Also, Sissi Schupp, an Austrian artist paints in a unique way that inspires me. I love her work for the black and white backgrounds she does and the touch of colours she adds.

ABODE: What can we expect to see in your upcoming exhibition in Qatar? "What Gandhi says" is the next subject of my solo exhibition that will be held on the bridge of the Intercontinental Doha The City from October 2nd-31st, 2016. It is an exhibition according to Gandhi’s maxim: I see nothing/See no evil, I hear nothing/Hear no evil and I say nothing/Speak no evil. Catch a glimpse of Jacinthe’s new art "WHAT GANDHI SAYS” to be exhibited at the Intercontinental Doha the City on October 2nd - 31st, 2016. SHAHD ABODE: What drove you to want to be a music producer? Who and what influenced you to explore this profession?

I always knew that I wanted a career in the entertainment industry, specifically the music industry. I was always surrounded by music throughout my childhood so it was ingrained in me. I started off playing classical music on the piano under the ABRSM program with Ms. Tianka Krasteva. She is one of the major driving-forces that led me to pursue my passion in music. I also learnt how to play the drums and created an all-girl band with my best friends in high school! We were the only girl band at the time actually. We performed at several gigs around Qatar during 2004 and 2006, such as the Battle of the Bands (2004 and 2005) where we came in 3rd place.

ABODE: From your point of view, how do you think female music producers compare to male music producers? You know, I get asked this quite often. I remember my first day at SAE Dubai when my lecturer asked me “Are you sure you’re in the right class?” the moment I walked in. Honestly, it is the passion that drives you, this is a tough industry for both men and women, but the harder you work, the more you’ll learn and the better you will become at your craft!

ABODE: What can you say about the music industry in the Middle East? How does it compare to other parts of the world? Ever-evolving. The Middle East hosts some of the most talented artists you’ll ever come across. The major comparison is that this part of the world is a melting pot of all cultures. It is extremely diverse, and the people of this region are well cultured and exposed to all other nationalities.

A native Egyptian raised in Qatar, Shahd Ahmed is one of the Region’s up and coming music producers and one of the few female Arab producers in the music industry. We sat down with Shahd and got the low down on whats it's like in the industry and how she never misses a beat!

ABODE: What is your biggest accomplishment so far?

My biggest accomplishment so far in the industry is the initial stage of certification, completing a Bachelor’s degree in Audio Production from the world’s leading educator in creative media, SAE Dubai. Everyone that I have collaborated with so far has taught me something new, it has been a pleasure and a great learning experience. The people you would consider ‘famous’, I still haven’t had Never allow the opportunity to work with, but I’m definitely someone's looking forward to it. negativity to kill However, there’s a lot in the pipeline, which your aspirations. I can’t disclose at the As women, we moment until it’s finalized, are one of the but it will definitely be something worth looking greatest assets to out for!

any industry.

ABODE: What is your vision and how you want to share it with the world? It starts with a dream, and you have to work on building your reality. Look, nothing comes easy and fame and success does not always happen overnight. You could be the smartest and most talented person out there, but if you give up at the first sign of rejection, you won’t get much further than that. You have to persevere. You have to put up with the door being slammed in your face over and over again and still get up in the morning and push through and try to open it again!
