Project 1: Sports Centre
Introducing my second year, sixth form architectural project. Having been given the task of creating a building of our own choosing, I decided to design a sports center with accommodation services personalized for professional athletes. This was to be tailored for the requirements of a worthy client in order to uphold a high standard. The project involved primary and secondary research of relevant information which in my case involved sustainability, sports facilities, ergonomics and relevant living unit costs. Following this stage, the project involved creating a design brief with multiple options for a proposal through trial & error of drawing designs, conceptual models & maquettes. To the right is the site model of the buildings intended location and existing context surrounding the building site. I proposed the site location (in yellow) to be in Milton, North Cambridge on the A10 off the A14 Motorway (as shown in blue).
Final Model
My design for this project is best represented by the final model whereby I experimented with different palettes of acrylic for the design of the building, and used MDF for elements of the surrounding context. I believed this to be the best approach to the design of my model because this way I would be able to display the functionality of the sports centre without referring to any floor plans or other documentation and by just simply viewing the interior through the transparency of the roof and certain parts of the structure. This approach worked effectively in the large open spaces such as the swimming pool section (located at the rear of the building, better illustrated on next page). For other parts of the model I used a translucent, blue coloured acrylic to best portray the architectural form of the building which I felt to be a distinctive aspect of the model.
Project 2: Future Designers Hub
This project was executed throughout my first year of Architecture studies, at Level 4 and involved designing a series of studio apartments for professional artists. The brief required the installation of ensuite bedrooms with sufficient communal & social spaces in addition to workshop and studio spaces. The site was located in the Old Hatfield Town area of Hatfield, Hertfordshire. Since this is a relatively quiet, anti- urban area the requirement was to design to a scale and style that corresponded well with the surrounding context. Nevertheless the design was also required to be strong enough that it would attract its occupants and locals within Old Hatfield Town.
Final Project Deliverables
Final Model (scale 1:200)
As part of my Level 4 final project submission I completed a 1:200 model of the site including surrounding buildings & context in addition to my design of the studio apartment. I completed this using AutoCAD for the creation of the floor plans (as shown left) on poster and corral draw to prepare the plans for lazer cutting.
My desire was to create an experimental model that would best portray the function of the building as opposed to attributes of the design such as the exterior aesthetics or building materials. In order to execute this representation I chose transparent acrylic as the primary material because, this way each floor plan would be visible upon close inspection. An A1 poster (shown left) was also to be completed for the submission. Here I chose to include a three dimensional render (produced on sketch-up) of the front of the structure with sections, elevations and floor plans from AutoCAD below. I chose each floor plan to be included in order for the scheme to be fully comprehended by viewers. Furthermore, a site plan was included in addition to images of the model of which more detailed examples are displayed on the following two pages. Final poster (A1)
Project 3 - North-West Cambridge Eddington Masterplan Redevelopment
This task conducted throughout my second year of my architecture degree studies involved re-creating a masterplan development for the north-west Cambridge Eddington scheme which opened to the public on the 9th September 2017. The following are my proposed concepts and re-designed development. The road layouts and open areas have all been devised upon inspiration from the unique qualities of the landscaping around Cambridge. This particularly relates to the significant presence of courtyards and vast greenspaces largely located within the Cambridge University Campuses scattered across the city. The building typologies and contents of the site such as the residences, communal areas, greenspaces, superstore and school have all been retained however the formation and layouts of the structures, pathways, public areas and roads have all been revised.
Site Plan & Analysis Proposed primary school: located North of the site to create sufficient separation space between the school site and the remaining residential sector.
Library: with learning resources, study spaces, communal spaces, private residences allocated for professors, teachers and staff members.
Tier 1: Residential Sector: Basic student accommodation available at the lowest price compared to that of other residences onsite.
Tier 2 Residential Sector: Average yet wellfurnished student accommodation with a variety apartment selection. Sector to contain communal spaces and recreational spaces.
Here a dead-end road and car park is proposed to be especially allocated to the school site. Additionally, multiple connecting pathways allow for easy access on foot.
High Class Private Residential sector: to contain apartments finished to the highest standard and furnished to the finest quality and bespoke styles. Only indented for private occupants.
Tier 3 Residential Sector: High class accommodation for students only. Sector to contain communal spaces, cafes & lounges for user convenience and leisure.
Local superstore: proposed for residents and members of the general public.
Public residential sector: not available for students intended only for private letting. To be purposely isolated and situated away from remaining site sectors which shall be primarily utilized by students. Also to contain communal spaces, lounges, cafÊ’s, sports and recreational facilities.
Masterplan Site Renders North overview of site
Utilizing Rhino 3D, I began creating massing studies of the structures and forms I wished to present on site. From this I have developed it further by conveying my finalized concept and layout for each sector on site. My intentions regarding the aesthetics of my scheme were to establish an ornate yet robust and rigid form for each of the structures created within the masterplan. This would include multiple instances of repetition and variation with the addition of platforms being offset allowing space for viewing. I have also incorporated underpasses and overhead walkways connecting neighboring structures whilst allowing pedestrian access underneath. These features are evident throughout the plan as shown particularly in the render above and the bottom left render displaying the school. Another aspect I have incorporated within my design is courtyards and outdoor recreation for all areas of the site. In my opinion it is essential to provide sufficient natural greenspace for the freedom and wellbeing of residents, students, children, shoppers and members of the public walking by.

Project 3: Lambeth Residential Highrise
Project Manifesto The ideology that I shall be defining for this project is the notion of self-made wealth & luxury. Of the forms by which wealth is obtained from either inheriting or earning, it is my intention to emphasize the importance of earning and striving for wealth and success. A substantial number of wealthy individuals in existence have gone through trials and tribulations and thus thrived to either become more successful or overcome hardship. It is my belief that such prosperity is largely a result of a forced hard-working mentality of determination. From this, there is always the desire to achieve more and go beyond any prior limitations. However, we must understand that it is those who have gained wealth through inheritance that are more likely to remain content with their position and stance in society. If one has only received wealth as opposed to acquiring it through their own efforts, then their initial desire to prosper and succeed is highly questionable. Those who are successful and have experienced challenging circumstances in more disadvantaged communities have not only the aspiration to further profit for themselves but also for their backgrounds and community. Once wealth is established from this position it is rarely taken for granted. This is because a wealthy individual from an unprivileged background shall resent ever returning to it whereas a privileged - born individual will never grasp such a state of impoverishment, having never experienced it for themselves. In this day in age the use of luxury is largely abused to where individuals are born and raised within such environments. Therefore, I intend on delivering this message to all communities, working or middle class as an example of what can be achieved and how we can and should live. In doing so changing the attitude towards luxury by showcasing it in such a fashion that all classes & communities shall perceive it as a reflection of status and respectable values.

Design concepts created from digital modelling (Rhino)
Initial Concepts My approach to the concept stage of this project was to distinctly represent the themes of Wealth and Luxury within my design, which have been raised in the manifesto. Therefore, I intended on designing for those who obtain these values. I proposed to utilize the method of a perfricated design to produce a scheme whereby every user could equally benefit from the initial structural layout. With this consideration, a 'formula' shall be applied to establish re-occurring architectural features, fusing an endoskeleton with an exoskeleton. This shall display an ordered arrangement of patterns to form an overall aesthetic that is both functional and visually appealing. Furthermore, the concept exhibits an extensive podium (following page) that is reflective of the site and beneficial the public and users. This merges with ground floor of the structure which mostly consists of supporting columns/ facades to free the space beneath for pedestrian circulation.

This podium layout is designed for both occupants of the building to utilize as well as the public. Providing efficient access to either end of the site via an underpass and elevated platforms if viewers feel inclined to enjoy a pleasant view of the site. Overall, this scheme intents to create a vibrant public atmosphere in addition to being an aesthetically effective point of access and congregation for residents.
