THE LAST GAME Wildcats’ high-powered offense struggles in 24-21 loss at SFA; two-game streak snapped

A

CU’s potent offense, which entered last week’s game averaging better than 525 yards per game, was limited to just 337 yards by Stephen F. Austin as the Lumberjacks snapped ACU’s two-game winning streak with a 24-21 win at Homer Bryce Stadium in Nacogdoches. The Wildcats – who ran for 335 yards two weeks against Houston Baptist and were averaging 234 yards per game on the ground – had just 54 yards on the ground against the Lumberjacks. Their inability to run the ball was one of many issues that cost the Wildcats in the contest. Quarterback Luke Anthony was picked off once and a fumble into the end zone was fallen on by SFA defender Trenton Gordon for a touchdown. ACU placekickers Oscar Hernandez and Taylor Williamson – who hadn’t missed a kick of any kind all season – combined to miss three in the game, one by Hernandez and a pair by Williamson. The Wildcats trailed 17-7 late in the third quarter when SFA scored on the fumble into the end zone, putting the Wildcats in a fourth-quarter hole from which they couldn’t recover. After ACU failed to mount much of a drive late in the third quarter, SFA got the ball back and went 77 yards on 10 plays and consumed 4:46 off the clock, pulling ahead 24-14 on an 8-yard touchdown run by backup quarterback Josh Covey, who scored on an option play to the left. The Wildcats were forced to punt on each of their next two possessions as they failed to put together any kind of offensive rhythm. After SFA punted with 3:40 left in the game, the Wildcats took over at their 40 and quickly moved deep into SFA territory on a 32-yard pass from Anthony to Kobe Clark and a a couple of penalties on SFA. But once ACU got inside the 10-yard line, the offense stalled as the clock continued to run. Finally on fourth down, Anthony threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Josh Fink in the back of the end zone to cut the SFA lead to 24-21 with 1:24 left. The Wildcats had a chance to recover the onside kick as the ball banged off the hands of one of SFA’s players on the front line. But Cody Williams fell on it and SFA was able to run out the clock on the Lumberjacks’ second straight victory over the Wildcats. 2

2018 WILDCAT FOOTBALL

NOTABLE • The Wildcats entered the game averaging 234 yards rushing through the first three games of the season, which ranked in the top 25 in the country. However, SFA’s defense held ACU to just 54 yards on 22 attempts, low totals in each category for ACU this season. • ACU’s offense – which entered the game 10th in the nation in third-down conversions (26 of 53), converted just two of 12 in the game. And the defense – which was tied for 20th in the nation in third-down conversion defense having allowed just 10 of 36 plays to be converted into first downs – gave up 7 of 17.

QUOTABLE “Our energy was lacking all night, and I’m not sure of the reason for that. We didn’t handle their blitz very well, and that’s something we worked on and prepared for all week in practice. We’ve got to go back to the drawing board and get ready for a good Incarnate Word team.” – ACU head coach Adam Dorrel

SATURDAY’S GAME Wildcats return home to face improved Cardinals in first home Southland game of 2018

T

he ACU Wildcats are back at home tonight to take an improved Incarnate Word team in a game that will be broadcast to the nation on ESPN+ and is the Southland Conference home-opener for the Wildcats, who will be trying to bounce back after last Saturday’s disappointing 24-21 setback against the Lumberjacks of Stephen F. Austin. The Wildcats enter Saturday night’s game at 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the league after the loss at SFA. The Cardinals were off last week and enter Saturday’s game at 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the Southland after a 31-7 whipping of Stephen F. Austin in San Antonio. The Cardinals opened the season with back-to-back losses at New Mexico (62-30 on Sept. 1) and at North Texas (58-16 on Sept. 8). The Wildcats’ two-game winning streak was snapped last Saturday night in rainy Nacogdoches as their high-powered offense was held to almost 190 yards below their per-game average entering the game. ACU managed just 337 total yards, including just 54 yards rushing on 22 carries, 180 yards below their average. ACU kickers Oscar Hernandez (0 for 1) and Taylor Williamson (0 for 2) combined to miss three field goals after neither had missed a kick of any kind through the first three weeks of the season. And the offense gave the Lumberjacks seven points on a fumble by Luke Anthony that was recovered in the end zone by SFA for a third-quarter touchdown that stretched its lead to 17-7. The Wildcats opened the home portion of the schedule two weeks ago with a 41-24 win over Angelo State, and will try to improve to 3-4 all-time at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium with a win over the Cardinals. ACU is 7-2 all-time against UIW, including 4-0 in Abilene. The Wildcats have outscored the Cardinals by a combined 174-49 in those four home games, including 52-27 in 2016, the last time Incarnate Word was here. Abilene Christian has the Southland Conference’s No. 1-ranked offense, averaging 478.5 yards per game, while UIW checks in with the fourth-ranked offense in the league at 438.3 ypg. UIW has the league’s No. 2-ranked rushing offense (217.7 ypg) with ACU at No. 3 in the league (189). ACU is third in the league in passing 4

2018 WILDCAT FOOTBALL

offense (289.5 ypg) with UIW seventh (220.7). Defensively, ACU is fourth in total defense, allowing 399.0 ypg and fifth in scoring defense (29.0 ppg). UIW, meanwhile, is 11th in in total defense (allowing a league-worst 550.7) and 11th in scoring defense (42.3). UIW senior running back Ra’Quanne Dickens leads the league in rushing at 156.3 ypg, and he’s scored five touchdowns on the ground. ACU junior Tracy James is third in in rushing at 77.2 ypg. Luke Anthony – ACU’s

sophomore starting quarterback – is second in passing yards per game (282.8), while Incarnate Word freshman QB Jon Copeland is sixth in passing yards per game (220). Anthony has thrown eight touchdown passes on the season (tied for second-best in the league), while Copeland has thrown three so far. The Wildcats hope to welcome back senior wide receiver D.J. Fuller, who has missed the last three games after suffering a knee injury against Baylor on Sept. 1.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

ALLEN WARD

A

llen Ward, who led the athletics program at Murray State University the past 13 years, was announced on July 16, 2018, as the ninth director of athletics at Abilene Christian University. During his tenure at Murray State, the Racers captured 39 Ohio Valley Conference championships and participated in NCAA Tournament play 29 times. Under Ward’s leadership, MSU has been one of the top overall athletics programs in its league, finishing in the top three in the OVC Commissioner’s Cup race six times since its inception in 2009, including second place each of the last two years. The Racers play NCAA Division I FCS football in the Ohio Valley Conference and its men’s basketball program is annually one of the top mid-major programs in the nation. Murray State – a university of almost 10,500 students – has won 25 OVC conference championships in men’s basketball and reached the NCAA Tournament 16 times, including last spring when the Racers lost to West Virginia in the first round. During Ward’s tenure at MSU, the Racers won six regular-season men’s basketball championships, four conference tournament titles, reached the NCAA Tournament four times (2006, 2010, 2012 and 2018), the NIT (2011 and 2015) and the collegeinsider.com Tournament (CIT) in 2014. When Ward joined MSU Athletics, its overall Academic Progress Rate (APR) score was 911. Last year it grew to 986. Student-athlete graduation rates

now consistently outpace the general student body with the 2018-19 difference expected to be 14 percent. He was at the helm as MSU’s athletics facilities were transformed by more than $13.5 million in enhancements, touching virtually every sport. In addition, the Racer Club was established as MSU’s annual fundraising arm, varsity softball was added as a sport, additional staff were added in key areas vital to student-athlete well-being and achievement, a comprehensive Title IX plan was developed to ensure compliance, and numerous events were digitally broadcast live and in HD each season. Ward has spent 27 years in collegiate athletics. He takes over an ACU athletics program that in 2018-19 will be in its sixth year as a Division I affiliate and second-year eligible for all Southland Conference and NCAA postseason tournaments. The 2018 season will mark ACU’s second to play at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium, its first on-campus home for football since World War II. Ward, 51, joined the Murray State program in March 2005 after serving the previous 14 years in several roles at the University of North Texas, including the final seven years as senior associate athletics director. A native of Rolla, Missouri, he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from William Jewel College and went on to earn his M.Ed. in physical education and sports administration from Wichita State University in 1991. He and his wife, Sharon, have two children: Nathan and Nicole.

HEAD COACH

ADAM DORREL

A

T dam Dorrel is in his second season after being named the 20th head football coach in ACU history in December 2016. Dorrel’s Wildcats were 2-9 overall and 2-7 in the Southland Conference last season. ACU’s signature victory was a 24-3 win over Houston Baptist on Sept. 16 in the first game at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium, ACU’s first on-campus home stadium since World War II. At the end of September, the Wildcats went to Incarnate Word to take on the Cardinals and came away with a 45-20 victory, snapping the Wildcats’ 14-game road losing streak that dated back to the start of the 2015 season. Prior to that win over UIW, ACU’s last road win was a 37-35 win over Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches on Nov. 15, 2014. In his first season at ACU, Dorrel saw some tremendous off-field strides, especially in the areas of

academics and community service. The ACU football program saw its overall GPA improve from 2.71 in 2016-17 to 2.95 in 2017-18 after posting semester GPAs of 2.95 (fall) and 2.96 (spring). The Wildcats also have become active partners in the community with an annual spring cleanup day around Abilene and several other projects. Dorrel’s players put in more than 500 hours of community service in 2017-18. Dorrel came to ACU after six seasons as the head coach at NCAA Division II power Northwest Missouri State University. He was introduced as the ACU head coach two days after the 2016 national championship game. Dorrel’s team won its second straight national title and third under his leadership with a 29-3 win in 2016 over North Alabama. A native of Maryville, Missouri, he and his wife, Erin, have twin daughters, Allie and Sam. 2018 WILDCAT FOOTBALL
