THE LAST GAME Colorado State QB throws three TD passes as Rams beat ACU, 38-10, to drop Wildcats to 0-2
C
olorado State quarterback Nick Stevens threw for 337 yards and three touchdowns last Saturday afternoon as the Rams ran their record on “Ag Day” to 8-0 with a 38-10 win over ACU in the second game ever at sparkling CSU Stadium. The Wildcats are 0-2 after a pair of losses to teams from the Mountain West Conference (New Mexico and Colorado State). The Rams, meanwhile, are 2-1 before they head to Tuscaloosa, Ala., today to take on top-ranked Alabama. “Ag Day” is a celebration of CSU’s past when the school was Colorado A&M and the nickname was the Aggies. The Rams – who normally wear green and gold – wore pumpkin and alfalfa on Saturday in a nod to the program’s original colors. ACU trailed 17-0 at halftime before Bryson Gates blocked a punt that Erik Huhn returned 16 yards for a score to cut the lead to 17-7 with 13:38 left in the third quarter, putting the Wildcats right back in the game. But the Rams answered with a 48-yard scoring drive to regain a 24-7 lead before ACU got a 29-yard field goal from Nik Grau to cut the CSU lead back to 24-10 with 4:14 left in the third quarter. Izzy Matthews caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from Stevens with 2:07 left in the third quarter to make it 31-10 and Marvin Kinsey Jr. capped the scoring with 5:40 left in the game when he bulled in from two yards out. ACU quarterback Dallas Sealey – who was 33 for 53 last week against New Mexico – was 25 for 38 for 258 yards last Saturday. The Wildcats finished with 333 yards of total offense.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT LAST WEEK •
Erik Huhn picked up a third-quarter blocked punt and returned it 16 yards for a score early in the third quarter, the first time ACU has scored on a blocked punt since Caleb Withrow fell on a blocked punt in the end zone against Northeastern State on Sept. 11, 2010, in Tahlequah, Okla.
• The Wildcats were shut out in the first half (17-0). The last time they were shut out was Oct. 15, 2016, 2
2017 WILDCAT FOOTBALL
when they trailed Sam Houston State, 27-0, at the break in Huntsville. •
ACU didn’t throw a touchdown pass Saturday, snapping a streak of 49 straight games with at least one touchdown pass for the Wildcats. That streak dated back to a 36-0 loss at West Texas A&M in 2012.
STAT CORNER
• Safety Bolu Onifade had a career-high 17 tackles, 11 of them solo stops. He also had one tackle for loss and two pass breakups.
•
Safety Brandon Richmond had another 12 tackles with eight of them registering as solo tackles. Richmond also had a fumble recovery and one pass breakup.
•
Nik Grau’s 29-yard third quarter field goal gives him 38 field goals in his career, moving him to within four field goals of tying Matt Adams (42 field goals from 2005-08) for third place on ACU’s all-time list. Morgan Lineberry (2009-12) is the all-time leader with 50.
The Wildcat Club is the official fundraising organization for ACU Athletics. Membership is open to alumni, community members, parents and other friends. There are many ways to join and benefits begin with an annual gift of $100 or more. This includes reserved season tickets and season parking for football.

SATURDAY’S GAME Wildcats, Huskies open Wildcat Stadium with ACU looking for season’s first victory
O
h, yeah. There’s a game to play today. Almost lost in all of the excitement around the opening of Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium is the fact that ACU will host Houston Baptist in the Southland Conference-opener for both teams, and it’s almost certainly a must-win game for the Wildcats for many reasons, not the least of which is the fact that the Wildcats are 0-2 and simply in need of a victory in 2017. For the first time since Nov. 27, 1958, the Wildcats will play a football game on campus as they host the Huskies, who enter tonight’s game at 1-1 overall after a road win over Texas Southern last week. That game in 1958 was a 49-30 win over ACU at Elmer Gray Stadium – the site where Wildcat Stadium now stands – because the surface at ACU’s home field (Fair Park Stadium) was too muddy to host a game, so the game was moved to the ACU campus. The last time the Wildcats played regularly at an on-campus facility was 1942 at A.B. Morris Stadium, which was near the site of the current College of Business Administration. ACU then moved to Public Schools Stadium in 1959 and it was later re-named Shotwell Stadium, and that’s where the Wildcats played through the end of the 2016 season. The Wildcats are 0-2 on the season after a 38-14 loss at New Mexico in the first game of the season and then a 38-10 loss last week at Colorado State in the Rams’ new on-campus stadium. ACU is trying to avoid a second straight 0-3 start to the season (a streak last year that stretched to 0-7 before a 52-27 Homecoming win over Incarnate Word). ACU enters its first game in its new home with a head coach in Adam Dorrel who has never lost backto-back games in his career, much less flirted with a potential three-game losing streak. Dorrel entered his first season as the Wildcats’ head coach with a 76-8 record in his six seasons as a head coach and a 90.5 winning percentage, which was the highest of any active college football coach at any level. Dorrel had led teams that had won 30 straight games dating back to the start of the 2015 season before the recent two-game losing streak.
4
2017 WILDCAT FOOTBALL
He leads a team that is averaging 307.5 yards of offensve per game and is allowing 543.0 yards per game defensively. Houston Baptist lost its season-opener at Texas State before bounding back last week with a win over Texas Southern. HBU freshman quarterback Bailey Zappe is 37 for 66 for 447 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Freshman running back James Brown rushed for
118 yards and a touchdown against the Tigers and leads HBU with 72.0 yards per game on the ground. Freshman Dennis Houston leads the Huskies in receptions with nine for 101 yards, while senior Ethan Fry has made seven catches for 150 yards and a touchdown. The game features the top two active career tackles leaders in the FCS, with HBU’s Garrett Dolan racking up 410 and ACU’s Sam Denmark totaling 332.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
LEE DE LEÓN
L
ee De León is is entering his fourth year (third complete athletics season), and in 2017-18, he will be leading an athletics program in its first year of full eligibility as an NCAA Division I affiliate. The Wildcats completed their four-year transition from NCAA Division II affiliation in 2016-17 with two more Southland Conference titles (women’s basketball and men’s tennis), giving ACU four conference championships during its transition period. The Wildcats also finished sixth in the Southland Conference Commissioner’s Cup, which measures the top athletics programs in the league. The Wildcats enjoyed a banner year in many respects in 2016-17, including academically where the athletics program boasted a combined GPA of 3.11, the highest of the four-year transition period. Eight of the program’s 16 programs improved their combined team GPA over their 2015-16 mark. De León oversaw the implementation of the Wildcat Club in 2015-16, and that turned into huge success in 2016-17 as the Wildcat Club finished the year with more than 700 members. By the end of December 2016, 703 people signed up for the Wildcat Club, helping ACU Athletics raise more than $6.25 million in Wildcat Club gifts, including the Wildcat Annual Fund, capital and endowment gifts, as well as donations to ACU’s sport-specific excellence funds. De León also led the Wildcats’ fundraising efforts for Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium, ACU’s first on-campus football stadium in more than 70 years. De León’s
efforts have increased the Champions Circle (donors who donate at least $10,000 per year) to more than 30 members and sell 13 suites at the stadium. De León became the eighth director of athletics in ACU history on Nov. 13, 2014, taking over the Wildcats’ program in the midst of transitioning from NCAA Division II status. Prior to joining the ACU staff, De León was the associate director of athletics for development and executive director of the Lobo Club at the University of New Mexico. While there he was in charge of UNM’s Lobo Club, which raises funds for all Lobo teams, programs and student-athletes. Prior to joining the staff at New Mexico, De León served three years at the University of Arizona, first as the director of annual giving and then as assistant athletics director for major gifts and annual giving. Before his stop in Tucson, Ariz., De León spent three years at the University of Houston as the assistant director of marketing and later, director of marketing. De León also worked at LSU in 2005 as a marketing assistant for women’s soccer. After graduating from Notre Dame in 2004, De León earned his master’s degree in sports management from Texas A&M University in 2005. He met his wife, Lacey, at Texas A&M and they have been married nine years and have two sons, Landon and Luke.
HEAD COACH
ADAM DORREL
A
T dam Dorrel – who has led his teams to remarkable conference and national playoff success the past six seasons – was introduced Dec. 19, 2016, as the 20th head coach in ACU football history. Dorrel joined the ACU staff after leading his alma mater, Northwest Missouri State University, to its second straight NCAA Division II national championship and third under his watch. In six previous seasons as a head coach, Dorrel compiled a 76-8 record for a 90.5 winning percentage that is the best active mark in college football, ahead of Ohio State University’s Urban Meyer (second at 85.5 percent). Dorrel led the Bearcats to the NCAA Division II playoffs in all six of his seasons as the head coach and coached them to 30 straight victories to end his tenure at Northwest. That 30-game streak is the longest in the nation at any
level, besting Alabama’s 25-game winning streak by five games. He also was voted the American Football Coaches’ Association (AFCA) Division II Coach of the Year in 2013, 2015, and 2016 when he led the Bearcats to national titles. Aside from their prowess on the field, the Bearcats also have been successful in the classroom. Northwest student-athletes have had a higher cumulative GPA than the rest of the student body for more than 10 years. The football program is part of that, carrying a cumulative team GPA of 2.89 in Fall 2015 with three student-athletes earning a 4.0 GPA and another 62 earning at least a 3.0 GPA. Northwest football players have earned more than 200 academic all-MIAA citations since 2011 and six have earned academic all-America honors. A native of Maryville, Mo., Dorrel and his wife, Erin, have twin 6-year-old daughters, Allie and Sam. 2017 WILDCAT FOOTBALL
