THE LAST GAME Anthony throws for 345 yards in starting debut, but Wildcats drop overtime heartbreaker
A
CU redshirt freshman quarterback Luke Anthony threw for 345 yards and two touchdowns in his first career start last Saturday night, but the Wildcats couldn’t overcome shortcomings in their kicking game as they dropped a gut-wrenching 26-23 overtime decision to Northwestern State at Turpin Stadium. Senior placekicker Nik Grau – who made field goals of 28, 19 and 30 yards – missed from 53, 44, 48 and 34 yards in the contest, while Northwestern State kicker Eric Piccione was four-for-four, hitting from 43, 45, 43 and 39 yards. Grau missed a 48-yarder with 13 seconds left in regulation that would have given ACU a 26-23 lead, and then missed a potential game-tying 34-yard field goal in overtime to give the Demons the victory. The teams went back and forth in the second half after ACU took a 17-13 lead into halftime behind two touchdown passes from Anthony to Carl Whitley, one from six yards and another from 34 yards. The Demons regained the lead with a touchdown on their opening drive of the second half, but ACU responded with a drive that stalled at the NSU 13-yard line before Grau booted a 30-yarder to tie the game 20-20 with 8:06 left in the third quarter. On their first possession of the fourth quarter, the Wildcats moved smartly from their own 49 to the NSU 1-yard line behind a 30-yard pass from Anthony to Trevor Crain and a 14-yard rush by backup quarterback Kade Munden. But Anthony threw incomplete on first down from the 1-yard line and then NSU’s defense stuffed Anthony on a pair of quarterback sneaks, forcing ACU to settle for a 19-yard field goal from Grau and a 23-20 lead with 11:23 left in regulation. Northwestern State then drove to the game-tying 43-yard field goal by Piccione, setting up the final nine minutes. ACU drove again deep into the Northwestern State end of the field, but stalled at the 27-yard line. Grau missed from 44 yards with 5:26 left, giving the ball back to the Demons. But ACU’s defense stood up and after a sack by Sam Denmark, the Demons were forced to punt. ACU took over on its own 27-yard line with 2:55 to play and moved down to the 31-yard line behind a 2

14-yard pass from Anthony to De’Andre Brown and a 16-yard pass from Anthony to Troy Grant. But three straight incompletions forced Grau to try and make the potential game-winner from 48 yards away. The field goal attempt leaked to the right and was no good with 13 seconds to play and the game eventually went to overtime. ACU won the coin toss and went on defense first, and forced a field goal attempt, which was good by Piccione from 39 yards to give the Demons a 26-23 lead. Anthony hit Tracy James for 8 yards on ACU’s first play and then it appeared that he hit Whitely from 17 yards out for the game-winner. But Whitley was
called for pass interference, wiping out the touchdown and pushing the ball back to the 32-yard line. Anthony completed back-to-back passes to James for 5 and 10 yards to get the ball to the 17, but Grau’s 34-yard attempt to tie the game and send it to a second overtime was pushed left and the game ended with the Demons storming the field. Anthony’s 345-yard effort is the third-highest yardage total by an ACU starting quarterback in his debut behind the record 403-yard effort by Parker McKenzie against Georgia State (Aug. 27, 2014), and 387 yards by Greg Wiggins against Southeastern Oklahoma State on Oct. 6, 2001.

SATURDAY’S GAME Wildcats close home portion of 2017 schedule by hosting 4th-ranked Sam Houston State
T
he ACU Wildcats will close out the home portion of the 2017 schedule Saturday when they host nationally ranked Sam Houston State at 2 p.m., closing out the historic first season at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium. The Bearkats are ranked No. 4 in the country and are 8-1 overall and 6-1 in the league entering Saturday night’s game, and need to win out to ensure themselves a spot in the FCS playoffs for the seventh straight season. Sam Houston State played for the national championship in 2011 and 2012, lost in the semifinals in 2014 and 2015 and lost in the quarterfinals last season to James Madison, the eventual national champion. Sam Houston State’s only loss this season came against league-leading Central Arkansas, and after taking on ACU on Saturday the Bearkats will close out the season next week at home against Houston Baptist, which enters today’s games at 1-8 on the season and 0-7 in league play. Two wins for the Bearkats in the final two weeks of the season should be enough to clinch a berth in the national playoffs. The Wildcats, meanwhile, enter Saturday’s game at 2-7 overall and 2-5 in the league and coming off last Saturday’s disappointing 26-23 overtime loss at Northwestern State. The loss continues ACU’s trend this season of losing close games. In four of their five conference losses this season, the Wildcats have lost by 10 points or less: 20-10 vs. Stephen F. Austin, 13-7 vs. McNeese, 29-20 vs. Nicholls and 26-23 vs. the Demons. The Wildcats will once again be led Saturday by redshirt freshman quarterback Luke Anthony, who took over as the starter last week against the Demons. He completed 29 of 45 passes for 345 yards and two touchdowns in the loss. His 345 yards are the third-most by an ACU quarterback in his starting debut, and it led him to earning honorable mention STATS FCS National Freshman of the Year honors, as well as Southland Conference honorable mention Offensive Player of the Week honors. Senior linebacker Sam Denmark enters today’s game with 379 career tackles and needs just 10 more to break the ACU career record of 388 set by Ryan Boozer from 1998-2001. And senior running back De’Andre Brown has 2,051 career rushing yards and needs just 9 yards to 4

pass current Kansas City Chiefs’ running back Charcandrick West (2,059 yards from 2010-13) for 10th on ACU’s all-time rushing list. Brown is one of only seven players in Wildcat football history to have at least 2,000 rushing yards and 3,000 all-purpose yards in his career. ee De León is in his fourth year (third complete athletics season) as director of athletics at ACU, and in 2017-18, he will be leading the Wildcats in their first year of full eligibility as an NCAA Division I affiliate. Abilene Christian completed its four-year transition from NCAA Division II in 2016-17 with two more Southland Conference titles (women’s basketball and men’s tennis), giving it four conference championships during the transition period. The Wildcats also finished sixth in the league’s Commissioner’s Cup, which measures its top athletics programs. The Wildcats enjoyed a banner year in many respects in 2016-17, including academically where the athletics program boasted a combined GPA of 3.11, the highest of the four-year transition period. Eight of the 16 programs improved their combined team GPA over their 2015-16 mark. De León oversaw the implementation of the Wildcat Club in 2015-16, turning it into a huge success. By the end of December 2016, 703 people had signed up, helping ACU Athletics raise more than $6.25 million in Wildcat Club gifts, including the Wildcat Annual Fund, capital and endowment gifts, as well as donations to ACU’s sport-specific excellence funds. De León also led the Wildcats’ fundraising efforts for Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium, ACU’s first on-campus football venue in more than 70 years. De León’s efforts have increased the Champions Circle (donors who donate at least $10,000 per year) to more than 30 members and sold 13 suites at the stadium.
He became the eighth director of athletics in ACU history on Nov. 13, 2014, taking over the Wildcats’ program in the midst of transitioning from NCAA Division II status. Prior to joining the ACU staff, De León was the associate director of athletics for development and executive director of the Lobo Club at the University of New Mexico. While there he was in charge of UNM’s Lobo Club, which raises funds for all Lobo teams, programs and student-athletes. Prior to joining the staff at New Mexico, De León served three years at the University of Arizona, first as the director of annual giving and then as assistant athletics director for major gifts and annual giving. Before his stop in Tucson, Ariz., De León spent three years at the University of Houston as the assistant director of marketing and later, director of marketing. De León also worked at Louisiana State University in 2005 as a marketing assistant for women’s soccer. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame in 2004, De León earned his master’s degree in sports management from Texas A&M University in 2005. He met his wife, Lacey, at Texas A&M and they have been married nine years and have two sons, Landon and Luke.

ADAM DORREL
A
T dam Dorrel – who has led his teams to remarkable conference and national playoff success the past six seasons – was introduced Dec. 19, 2016, as the 20th head coach in ACU football history. Dorrel joined the ACU staff after leading his alma mater, Northwest Missouri State University, to its second straight NCAA Division II national championship and third under his watch. In six previous seasons as a head coach, Dorrel compiled a 76-8 record for a 90.5 winning percentage that is the best active mark in college football, ahead of Ohio State University’s Urban Meyer (second at 85.5 percent). Dorrel led the Bearcats to the NCAA Division II playoffs in all six of his seasons as the head coach and coached them to 30 straight victories to end his tenure at Northwest. That 30-game streak is the longest in the nation at any
level, besting the University of Alabama’s 25-game winning streak by five games. He also was voted the American Football Coaches’ Association (AFCA) Division II Coach of the Year in 2013, 2015, and 2016 when his teams won national titles. The Bearcats also were highly successful in the classroom. Northwest student-athletes had a higher cumulative GPA than the rest of the student body for more than 10 years. The football program was part of that, carrying a cumulative team GPA of 2.89 in Fall 2015 with three student-athletes earning a 4.0 GPA and another 62 earning at least a 3.0 GPA. Northwest football players earned more than 200 academic all-MIAA citations since 2011 and six earned Academic all-America honors. A native of Maryville, Missouri, Dorrel and his wife, Erin, have twin daughters, Allie and Sam.
