Where will the Holy Spirit send you to share the good news? St Paul was a Jew and as he travelled on his missionary journeys he always visited the local synagogue because that was a place he was guaranteed an audience. He rarely got a warm welcome but equally he was rarely ignored. Paul understood that if the teaching and the life of Jesus was to spread and take root, it needed to be preached in the largest cities and towns. His plan, laid out in the verses prior to our reading from Acts, was to travel to the west coast of what is now Turkey, here there were five of the empire’s largest cities: Pergamum, Smyrna, Sardis, Miletus and Ephesus. But we’re told in vv6 & 7 that the Holy Spirit did not let them preach in this area. Paul’s plan, it turned out, was not God’s plan. So he travelled through Mysia (NW Turkey) stopping at Troas. While at Troas Paul had a vision in which a man appealed to him saying ‘Come over to Macedonia and help us.’ Paul, Silas, Timothy and Luke concluded that this was a vision from God. Paul and his closest supporters were open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. They interpreted their inability to reach the cities of the west coast as the will of God, despite their personal desires to go there and equally they attributed Paul’s vision to the Holy Spirit. God was saying “I want you in Macedonia2 and they were able to hear God because they were listening and because they were open to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Paul, Silas, Timothy and Luke thus travel to Macedonia and make their way to Philippi one of the principal cities of Macedonia. Philippi was a wealthy Roman colony with

Magazine for the Builth Ministry Area June 2019 important gold mines, but the city was nowhere near as large or significant as the cities of west Asia where Paul had wished to preach. Paul could have been forgiven for asking ‘Lord, why on earth are you sending me to this outpost of empire, they don’t even have a synagogue?’ But no, Paul just headed off looking for possible converts. And there they were down by the river, a group of women, praying to God. They met Lydia a dealer in purple cloth, a woman of substance involved in local commerce. The Lord opened her mind to what Paul was saying, she gave her life to Christ and was baptised. So finally, of course we discover why God has sent Paul to Philippi. Paul’s letter to the Philippians, some months or possibly years later, is one of his most joyful and confident. The Christians of Philippi have turned out to be a hugely generous community, they have provided significant financial support for Paul’s later missionary work, they had developed into great enablers of the spread of the gospel. Yet the Christians in Philippi only came to hear the good news of Jesus Christ because Paul and his fellow missionaries were open to the Holy Spirit. God presented Paul with an opportunity to meet Lydia and her friends in Philippi, the opportunity was grasped, and the spread of the gospel accelerated in an unexpected fashion. God is still providing opportunities for us to share his good news. We only need to be open and obedient to his guidance, and to grasp the opportunities presented and best of all, God’s Holy Spirit will do the rest.

Builth Ministry Area - Colwyn Dear Friends,

Events and Meetings

We are now in the season of Pentecost which lasts from Easter to Whitsunday. Pentecost is a Greek word which means fiftieth day and was the Greek name given for the Feast of Weeks so called because it fell on the fiftieth day after Passover. At this feast the first fruits of the wheat harvest were presented - harvest comes much earlier in the year in Israel than in Wales – and the giving of the Law by Moses was commemorated. As the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles on this day, the name was applied by the Church to the feast celebrating this event which is popularly known as Whitsunday. It ranks after Easter as the second greatest festival in the Church and historically was a secondary date for baptisms. The word Whitsunday is said to derive from the white robes worn by the newly baptised on that day. The descent of the Holy Spirit on to the Apostles marks the beginning of the Church as we know it and is to be celebrated. Come to our Benefice Pentecost service at Rhulen at 10.00 on 9th June to celebrate the Church’s birthday.

On Bank Holiday Monday, Parishioners from Builth Wells Benefice group of churches undertook the Annual Rogation walk. The photograph shows them preparing to start from St Mauritiu,s Altmawr, they then climbed the open moorland of the Epynt hills, crossing the river Duhonw to St.David`s Llanddewi`r Cwm, and continuing via a bridleway and footpaths to St.David`s Maesmynis for soup, rolls and welsh cakes, prepared and served by church members at Maesmynis Hall. The final leg of the walk was then completed to St David`s Llanynis, where a very welcome tea was served. A total distance of just over 7 miles was covered. Thanks to all who took part in this ancient tradition.

Builth Ministry Area - Erwood & Painscastle Dear All, One of the many joys of living and ministering in the country is that the rather strange and mysterious period in the Church year between the excitement of Christmas and the Passion of Easter coincides with the lambing season. For those of us who are not directly involved we are filled with humility as we see new life burgeoning all around us through the utter dedication, necessity and hard work of our rural communities. In the life of the Church, we echo this dedication by renewing our faith during Lent and following our Lord to the cross during Easter. It is so fitting that we call him the Paschal Lamb who is sacrificed for us. So, simultaneously, as your lambs are being brought into the world, in our churches we are praying to the Lamb of God for your strength and wellbeing.

glorious Feast of The Most Holy Trinity, which, this year, we celebrate on the 16th June and will last until the end of October. One of the strengths of our tradition is that we are always offered times of spiritual renewal through which we may draw close to Christ. This is a beautiful season in the Christian year, with no less power than more obviously symbolic seasons; we are allowed to settle into the gentle rhythms of Mother Church that sustain us without being overconscious of maintaining the fierce spirit of endeavour that is often felt throughout Advent and Lent. This is a season of surety – the Spirit is with us, making us one with Christ and this links us with his Father, resting in the depths of his love for us. Enjoy the rhythm of this time of the year as we rest in the essence of God’s Trinitarian nature; draw in your strength from God in Christ and make the coming Summer a long outgoing sigh of warmth as you breath out his Spirit into the world. There is no end to the transformation of our relationships and communities if we believe in the power of this love.

This year, the season of Easter carried us through May and so June begins with the glorious climax of the Easter Story that is Pentecost on the ninth of the month. Now, after the emotional seasons of Christmas and Easter, we may return to the steady and constant season of the Church’s year that we call Ordinary Time. In Anglican tradition, this Summer season is known rather wonderfully and naturally, as the Trinity Season because it begins with the
