Magazine for the Builth Ministry Area September 2018

All of that Green! Throughout the sweeping move through Trinity season between Trinity Sunday and Kingdom season we see swathes of green in our churches. Frontals, stoles and flowers are many hued variations of the same, from emerald to lime to olive – but at least we don’t have to change anything! Yet this year amidst all of the sunscorched days of July and into August it has been hard to sometimes see green about us in creation. With parched lawns and brown fields, it has been a struggle for all sorts of people. Within church we think about creation – indeed in the church lectionary we devote one Sunday to it (the Second Sunday in Lent). But is that enough? In a world in which man-made ecological disasters (from destroying rainforests to GM crops) are being ever more common shouldn’t the churches respond with a way in which we can reflect more seriously and in depth to what God has to say to us about creation. Now we can. It was the Orthodox Church in 1989 that suggested that time between International Earth Day on 01st September and the Feast of Francis of Assisi (October 4th) be kept as ‘Creationtide’. In the west we already had some emphasis on creation during September because of Harvest Festivals, but the orthodox suggestion was a more sustained response to a changing world. The concept of Creationtide was endorsed by ALL of the major denominations at the European Ecumenical Assembly in Sibiu, Romania in 2007, when it was agreed that Creationtide "be dedicated to prayer for the protection of Creation and the promotion of sustainable lifestyles that reverse our contribution to

climate change". In 2017 the Church in Wales through the Diocese of Bangor produced its first set of Creationtide resources. Why should we celebrate Creationtide in our own Ministry Area? God is the creator of all life and we were created with the rest of nature to worship him. He has gifted us his creation to celebrate with, but we are threatening that creation and need to spiritually come to terms with the ecological crises we face. A season of Creationtide allows us to congregationally celebrate God the Fathers gift of creation, Christ the Son’s connection with creation, and finally to deepen our experience of the Holy Spirit in relationship with creation. How can you celebrate Creationtide in your own churches? You can use the Creationtide readings (on pages 4 or 6) in your own churches (make sure you check with the person leading the worship first!). You can sing creation hymns, not just the familiar four or five harvest ones – the full range of the churches wonderful hymnody about creation. You can have your service outside or bring some of the outside in through the judicious decoration of the church with the fruits of his creation. But most of all pray. Exult in God’s gift of creation, confess that as individuals and as humanity we are letting it down, give thanks that creation is still sustaining us and finally recall those specific issues which have personally come to your attention. You don’t even have to change the frontals, as the colour of Creationtide … green! Fr. Neil Hook

Builth Ministry Area - Colwyn Events and Meetings for September and October: ALL WELCOME

Dear Friends,

As we approach the autumn we think of our harvest festival season, but this presents different images to different people depending on where they live. Around here it is the time for buying and selling lambs and store cattle. This year has been a real struggle for our farmers because of the long winter which extended into lambing time and the short spring followed by two months of drought which has much reduced the crop of grass leaving farmers with little fodder for the forthcoming winter. Because of this our harvest prayers and blessings are needed more than ever. It will be lovely to see you all at one of our harvest services. Please see dates and times of services near you.

I hope and pray that you have all had a good break and that the children are all excited in going back to school.

Blessings to you all.

Builth Ministry Area – Buallt Dear friends, As the front-page article explains this month we embrace the ‘Season of Creation’ – an apt new season for the Church here in this area as our Harvest Festivals can be found throughout this time. These wonderful services and the ‘bringnshare’ harvest meals which accompany them, are tremendous opportunities to bring friends and family who do not normally attend church with you. They offer a ‘gentle’ introduction to our church family and worship. Please do consider ‘phoning a friend’ and inviting them with you! With every blessing Fr. Neil

Harvest Thanksgiving Fellowship – what is ‘bringnshare’?

Most of our Harvest Thanksgivings are, this year, being followed by ‘bringnshare’ meals. This tradition of gathering together, just like Jesus did with his friends in John 21, is well established. Everyone coming to the service is encouraged to bring, a small (side) plate of savoury finger food and another of sweet finger food, for the meal afterwards. In harvests past everyone helped each other to gather in the crops and shared their food, this simple act reconnects us with our heritage. As part of each service a portion of the collection will be given to Christian Aid to help feed the hungry across the world, further connecting us with our brothers and sisters in need.

With grateful thanks….. St Mary's congregation and friends enjoyed the annual Barbeque held on 18 July in the grounds of the Riverside centre, on a beautiful summer evening. Many thanks to all who contributed in any way, but particularly thanks to Doug Wellstead and Derek Miles for doing the cooking. It was an evening of good fellowship, in a relaxed setting, and the bonus was it raised £283 for St Mary's funds.

‘Moving Pictures?’ This new initiative is a monthly study group for adults which uses ] to explore our faith, when films we try NOT to see things in ‘black & white’. This month the film is ‘The Song’ a contemporary exploration of the Song of Solomon. The Group meets this month at 3 Glandwr Park, Builth on Tuesday 03rd September from 19.00 – 21.30. Places are limited to six, allocated on a ‘first come first served’ basis. To reserve a place please email Fthr. Neil. Are you a musician? St. Mary’s are looking for people to join CELEBR8 the worship group that provides musical accompaniment to our family contemporary worship on the first Sunday of the month. In particular we are looking for a guitarist to join our happy band! If you can play any instrument, or are a vocalist we love to hear from you. CELEBR8 meets at 09.15 before the 10.00 service for a brief rehearsal, so the commitment is not too onerous (and you get coffee and cake after the service!).

Holy Cross Day Its official title is ‘The Exaltation of the Holy Cross’ but in our own Diocese it’s more commonly known as ‘our anniversary’ as the Diocese was formed on that day in 1923. Archbishop++John encourages all parishes to mark the occasion and has given dispensation for the Feast to be transferred to the nearest Sunday (as we are doing moving from the 14th to the 16th and superseding ‘Creation III’). We are marking our ninety-fifth diocesan anniversary with a special Matins service in St. Mary the Virgin, Builth. We are fortunate to be having David White, Licensed Lay Minister of the Gwastedyn Benefice (clustered around Rhayader) to preach for us on this occasion. Builth Ministry Area - Erwood & Painscastle Dear All,

course humus – earth). As we approach Harvest, the Ember Days remind us how our own Christian faith may be part of keeping our working link with creation alive. Within the hardship and anxiety that is, often, part of our relationship with the land and all God’s creatures, we may be sure that all our hard work draws us closer to God and he does love us for serving him through our care for his creation. Amidst all this gentle reflection in September there is still a nudge of excitement to draw us even further towards Advent. We celebrate the Feast of the Birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the eighth. To deepen the mystery and pull us beyond Advent to Easter, we have Holy Cross Day on the 14th. The heavenly realm truly beckons as the month closes with the Feast of Michael and All Angels on the twenty-ninth. The remembering of the life of our Lord is truly our foundation and hope as we feel the stress of beginnings and endings constantly mingled together in our own journeys through life. May we all find refreshment and renewal in Christ. Love him as he loves you and, through this, be drawn into his love for all people – so we all may be part of the Harvest of the World. Thus may the coming Harvest be a season of abundance for you all in every way.

This year is passing so quickly. Autumn beckons and, as we approach our celebrations of Harvest, our place in God’s created world is, once more, much in our minds. This has been a strange year of extremes. Mother Nature can be a hard mistress for those who work so closely with her. Our hearts have been with all who struggled with the freezing winter, the sodden ground of April and the scorched earth of July. With Creation in mind, let us reflect on the Autumnal Ember Days of September. The Ember Days were traditionally four sets of three days of fasting and prayer surrounding the agricultural practice of acknowledging the changing of the seasons. They coincide with our Christian festivals of St Lucy (13th December) Pentecost and Holy Cross Day (14th September). The Spring/Lent Ember Day was added later. This year, in the Church in Wales, the days fall on Wednesday the 26th, Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th of the month (Happily and rightly coinciding with Michaelmas on this day.) Modern Catholic practice has no obligatory recognition of the Ember Days but as Anglicans we may recognise that they remain part of the unique spiritual tradition of our islands that is linked so much to our agricultural heritage and the vagaries of the climate here in the North West of Europe. We are creatures wedded to the land (the root of humility is of

Mrs Jones Receives Recognition for Years of Service Followers of the Builth Group Facebook page will be aware that Mrs Anne Jones was surprised to receive an award on the 15th July. The Archbishop of Wales Certificate of Merit was awarded for her long and dedicated service to church music at St Mary’s, Builth. His Grace the Archbishop of Wales, The Most Reverend John Davies presented the award himself after celebrating the eucharist at St Mary’s and the well-kept secret was revealed to an un-suspecting Organist! Annie said she was thrilled to receive the accolade after what is probably more than 70 years of playing. In the second week in August we welcomed Stephen Power (Director of Music at Brecon Cathedral) to St Mary’s to put the organ through its paces. Stephen had some valuable suggestions for the future of the organ and he and Annie discussed the challenges which currently face small rural choirs. If you are interested in joining us to sing at St Mary’s no experience is necessary. See page 6 for contact details.

Our 2018 Mission Festival On Saturday the 15th of September at 12noon at the Cathedral, people from all across the diocese will be gathering to celebrate the shared mission that we, as the church families in Swansea & Brecon engage in. Under our banner of, ‘Gathering, Growing, Going” the diocese has been reaching out into communities across Wales the share the love of Jesus in practical ways.

Private Hugh Williams Hughes 1885-1919 Descendants and relations of Private Hugh Williams Hughes A.S.C.M – T M/35008 67th Aux. Royal Army Service Corps attended a memorial service held for him at St. Mary’s Church, Bettws Disserth on 12 August 2018. They came from all over the country and joined with those that live locally and their friends to fill the church to capacity. The service took the form of a Said Evensong and was led by Rev Linda Watson. It provided an opportunity for them to learn about their ancestor and to meet one another, in many cases for the first time.

This service celebrates and affirms this form of ministry and also gives us the opportunity to show the practical help we can offer. As part of the service our Diocesan Bishop ++John will be presenting cheques to four charities: Faith in Families (our own Diocesan Charity), Carers Wales, Hay Brecon & Talgarth Sanctuary for Refugees, and Kids for Kids. The money presented to each of these worthwhile causes represents one quarter of the Bishops Lent Appeal monies collected earlier this year. Private Hughes died in hospital in France from pneumonia on 6th February 1919 and is buried in Etaples military cemetery. He is remembered on a headstone of his siblings in Bettws churchyard near his home at Garnfawr, Bettws with these words: He sleeps beside his comrades In a grave across the foam, But his name is written in letters of love, On our hearts he left at home. After the service the Hughes family enjoyed a lovely tea in Hundred House Hall, served by members of Bettws Church and were able to meet one another and study their family tree.

One Woman Walking In 2015 Anne Hayward spent three months as a pilgrim, travelling on foot to visit some of Wales’ holiest sites and carrying everything she needed to camp along the route. Her main objectives were four ancient places of pilgrimage – Holywell, Bardsey Island, St David’s and Llantwit Major – but she also visited numerous churches and other places of interest along the way.

the beauty of the ordinariness of many of my days.’ In the book, she also meditates upon the significant conversations she found herself sharing with the strangers she met along her path. ‘The subtitle of this book is In Search of a Significant Conversation, and its contents cause us to appreciate the conversations, random or otherwise, which peppered the author’s pilgrimage around Wales,’ said the Most Reverend John D E Davies, Bishop of Swansea & Brecon and the Archbishop of Wales. ‘Unspoken or spoken, those conversations bring the places to life, and illuminate the faith which motivated the journey.’

Her reflections, insights and experiences have just been published by Y Lolfa Press. In A Pilgrimage Around Wales she gives some of the history of those ancient places of pilgrimage and reflects on the spiritual experience of being a modernday pilgrim. ‘I was very fortunate – ‘blessed’ is a more apt word, perhaps – to have been able to take time out of ordinary life in the spring and summer of 2015 to go on a pilgrimage around Wales. This book is a fruit of that pilgrimage,’ explained Anne.

‘“Camping here is my gift to you,” said one campsite owner to Anne on her tremendous pilgrimage, and this book is a real gift to us, with Anne’s thoughts reminding us of the vast riches we have in Wales in so many ways’ added the Revd Canon Ian Rees, Rector of Central Swansea.

‘Being on foot and carrying quite a heavy pack for a small(ish) woman, was both liberating and constraining,’ said Anne, ‘What became increasingly clear during those three months was that my research prior to my walk had left me unprepared for the sheer joy of quietly discovering new places and the enormous sense of achievement that I felt each day. Often what was most overwhelming was

Over the past few years, she has walked thousands of miles from her home in the Brecon Beacons to places of pilgrimage in Wales, Ireland, Brittany and England. Anne is a Licensed Lay Minister (Reader) in the Parish of Crickhowell in our own Archdeaconry. 11

ANNUAL LECTURE ‘THE USE OF SILENCE’ by Bishop +Dominic Walker OGS Saturday 29th September 2.30pm Children in Poverty

It is estimated that 200,000 children in Wales are living in poverty today, with cutbacks in benefits and public funding for family services significantly adding to the problem. The Welsh Government recently said it would not be able to reach its target of ending child poverty by 2020. Archbishop John said last month: “Poverty in childhood is an issue the Church is acutely aware of due to the work of our family centres, community projects, foodbanks, holiday hunger schemes and our collaboration with the Children’s Society. We see at first-hand how poverty is affecting children across Wales and how the demand for these services continues to increase. We fear many children in Wales are having their childhood blighted by poverty – a ‘poor upbringing’.”

The Children’s Commissioner, Dr Sally Holland, says, “Without a doubt, child poverty is the biggest challenge facing Welsh Government today. We know the scale of the problem, and we know that those families in the most vulnerable positions need more help. “Churches do some important work to support families who are living in poverty, including food banks, and organising free packed lunches for children at holiday clubs over the summer to replace their free school meals and ensure they don’t go hungry. These are some examples of the initiatives that can really make a difference to the most vulnerable families. This year, my office will be meeting with children, parents and “ professionals from across Wales to hear what they think needs to change, and what extra support they need. We’ll then be recommending concrete steps that Welsh Government and local authorities can take to reduce the impact of poverty on the most vulnerable children and their families.” In our own Diocese we support as many children as we can through our Family Centres, including the St. John’s Centre in Brecon. To learn more about their work, how you or your parish can support that work and to get involved with the work of our own Diocesan Board of Social Justice, visit: https://swanseaandbrecon.churchinwales.org.uk/faith-in-families/ 12
