A Modern Take on ‘In Flanders Fields’ This month across our Ministry Areas traditional acts of remembrance will take place, both on Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday, and as part of those rituals the words of John McCrae’s iconic poem will often be recited as we bow our heads in tribute to those who fell in war for the cause of peace. Yet these lines of ‘In Flanders Fields’ are not just consigned to the page – they have appeared in iconic locations across the UK – installed by The Royal British Legion for the 2017 Poppy Appeal. By re-creating John McCrae’s poem in seven locations the Legion aims to bring ‘In Flanders Fields’ into modern-day consciousness, encouraging people to Rethink Remembrance and consider the meaning of the poppy as a symbol both of Remembrance and hope for the Armed Forces community, past and present.
‘In Flanders Fields’ was written after poppies bloomed on the battle fields of the First World War, despite the death and destruction around them. It’s that life force growing in the most difficult of circumstances that connects the poppy with a message of hope. Claire Rowcliffe of the Royal British Legion remarked "The Poppy Appeal 2017 is encouraging the public to recognise that your poppy supports the

Armed Forces community past and present". The poem lines are located at Royal Hospital Chelsea in London, on Dunkirk Beach, on the White Cliffs of Dover, at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, in Cardiff Bay, at Salford Quays in Manchester and outside the Sage in Gateshead.
The individual letters of the poem are made up of clusters of poppies, giving the impression the lines of the poem have grown from the ground, and when viewed from a height or at ground level will bring a new perspective to the famous poem and its meaning. Claire Rowcliffe continues, “The work of the Legion is as relevant and vital today as it was in the aftermath of the First World War when the charity was founded. The donation for your poppy will help the Legion support today’s Armed Forces community through hardships, injury and bereavements … We’re encouraging people to dig deep for this year’s Poppy Appeal to help us raise £47 million. The Legion’s work is entirely dependent on the public’s generous support – so please wear your poppy with pride.” As these poppies give a new perspective to those who fell so many years ago, across our Ministry Areas prayers will also be said for peace as the world faces new dangers and challenges which threaten the very fabric of our civilisation.

Ophelia in Shakespeare’s Hamlet says, “Here’s rosemary, that’s for Remembrance. Pray you, love, remember.” November is a time of the year for remembering. On the 5th this year we celebrate All Souls Day at St Bridget’s Church, Llansantffraed-in-Elwell, when we remember all those who have departed this life - not that we ever forget those whom we love - but it is an opportunity for us to come together as a community to remember them. Sunday 12th is our Benefice Remembrance Service, held at St Mary’s Bettws. The phrase 'lest we forget' is thought to come from the poem "Recessional" by Rudyard Kipling. This poem was written for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee and it was where Kipling was inspired by a Bible reading from Deuteronomy 6:12, which reads: "Then beware lest thou forget the Lord which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt". This poem itself doesn't touch upon remembering the fallen soldiers, but it has been adopted as part of Armistice Day traditions. During the act of Remembrance, the Ode of Remembrance is said: "They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them." This is the fourth verse of the poem ‘For the Fallen’ by Laurence Binyon which was published in the Times Newspaper on 21st September 1914. This is what the Remembrance Service is all about - remembering all those who gave their lives so that we might live in peace and freedom. Blessings

Support for ‘Faith in Families’ Our own diocesan charity ‘Faith in Families’ is a natural partner for the Mothers Union. Most recently Gardening tools, windmills, wellingtons and macs have been provided for the children at two of the Faith in Family Centres run by the Diocese. This has enabled young children to experience the thrill of gardening and sometimes eat the produce. Garden benches have also been donated for children and adults to enjoy sitting in the garden. In our own Archdeaconry, white goods were provided for the kitchen in the St John’s Family Centre, Brecon. If you are interested in exploring the difference the Mothers Union could make in your lives then please speak to a cleric in your parish who will gladly put you in contact with the nearest branch.

Pastures New During the last six months a number of different clergy, retired and full time have been responsible for the services and day-to-day running of the parish in Fr Neil’s absence. Revd Michelle Bailey has been a regular feature of our worship and very supportive to the congregation. The remembrance service at Builth will be her last service in the group as she will be taking up the incumbency in the Dan yr Epynt Group of parishes north and west of Brecon. We thank her for her kindness and hard work and wish her well for her future ministry.

once again we are mindful of how time is passing in our lives. So, indeed, November introduces a more sombre tone to our Christian year, yet the festivals this month are also special in that they introduce us to the context of God’s love centred in eternity. November gives us the chance to acknowledge the world of unseen things that complement our physical lives and live in our hearts to give us a different (and true) reality; a reality that centres around a never-ending feeling of hope. November affirms the importance of coming to know fully the love of God that transcends time and space and even conquers death. This month is often known as the month of the dead. The Feast of All Souls, on the second of the month, is a time when we come together for a Eucharist in St Michael’s, Bryngwyn at 7.00pm to celebrate and commemorate the lives of the departed, many of whom we love and miss. This is an important celebration when we open our hearts to acknowledge the presence of our ancestors and also the angels who bring a touch of heaven to us in our lives. Associated with this All Saints Day, which we will be celebrating on Sunday the 5th of the month. The two celebrations are connected. The Feast of All Saints gives us strength in our individual sorrows to remember the Saints who have trod a troubled path before us – even to martyrdom, their footpaths have paved the way to make it easier for us to follow and thus we may readily call upon their help and intercessions for us. Remembrance Sunday, on the twelfth of the month reminds us that our capacity for noble sacrifice is an intrinsic part of our nature; at our very best, humankind is truly Christ-like. All these festivals show us that much of our life on earth is bound up with thoughts of heaven. To make sense of life and suffering in our musings we must hold on to the promise of eternal life that Jesus has promised for each one of us. The Feast of Christ the King on Sunday the 26th is the glorious climax of the Christian year. The celebration of this feast emphasises how humanity and divinity are inseparable within God’s love for us in Christ. Jesus the Christ is King of Heaven and Earth. He defined the true nature of kingship through uniting his divine nature with our human condition thus showing us that the true nature of all sovereignty and leadership involves serving humanity through an embrace of love for those who would be served in all their frailty. His identification with our mortality enables him to sit at the right hand of God for all eternity and be our advocate in heaven for all time – our King who carries us with him - Christus Rex. May this thought dwell in your hearts for the beginning of Advent on the following Sunday, the 3rd Of December as we celebrate the story of how Christ’s kingship begins; Emmanuel, who is God with us. There is a poem that starts, Remember, remember the fifth of November. I feel that we should spend more time remembering the 11 November a time when peace seemed possible but such a loss was felt by so many. There is still so much war in the world and so many men and women being killed each day fighting for their cause. In addition, there are the innocent people who are caught in the crossfire. War is not pleasant, war is not glamorous. It is violent and horrific. So why do we fill our churches on Remembrance Sunday, wearing our poppies and laying wreaths? We do so to give thanks for the lives of those who died to allow us the peace and rights that we have today. Without whom we would not be living the lives that we are. It is to remember what war is, the sacrifice that men and women make to protect us. Those that die and those who live with the ongoing effects. Let us reflect on what our Armed Forces do for our country. Not just in war but also in their work helping in floods and other crises that occur. As well as being a protective presence in all large public events. Nobody likes war, terrorism or natural disasters but they are around us and not going away soon. So let us pray for peace but also pray for those who put their lives on the line for us in the Armed Forces and the Emergency Services. We are so fortunate that God called these people to help as they do. We Will Remember Them. Love and blessings

‘Thirty years atravelling’ Journeying … and the 2018 holiday programme For thirty years Journeying has been taking people on holiday in small informal groups to places on the edge – island, hill, shore. Travelling in a spirit of pilgrimage our purpose is to provide inspiring holidays that enable people to venture out, leave the every-day and connect with God in creation, in each other and in ourselves. Our focus tends to be within the UK and Ireland and since 1988 we have taken people to most corners of these wild and beautiful islands. There is an underlying Celtic spirituality threaded through all that we do – the worship and rhythm of the day, creating community and hospitality and seeing God in all things. Ours is a spirituality fed by the outdoors; by hills, mountains and walking. Holidays may be on a ‘self-cater as a group’ basis using our own house, or perhaps in a small hotel or retreat house where catering is provided. We tailor each trip using the best of our wide experience to create a time away that, we believe, is unique. Even though we are a Christian organisation (and perhaps because of it too) we welcome people of all traditions, of other faiths and none.
