The Balfour Project by Mark Griffiths 2017 is a year of significant anniversaries in PalestineIsrael. It is the centenary of the Balfour Declaration, seventy years since the formation of the state of Israel, fifty years of Israel's illegal occupation of the Palestinian territories and thirty years since the first Palestinian intifada. The Balfour project was formed in response to the first of these anniversaries: The Balfour Project invites the government and people of the United Kingdom to mark the centenary of the Balfour Declaration on the 2nd November 2017 by • Learning what the Balfour Declaration means for both Jews and Arabs • Acknowledging that whilst a homeland for the Jewish people has been achieved the promise to protect the rights of Palestinian people has not yet been fulfilled • Urging the people and elected representatives of the United Kingdom to take effective action to promote justice, security and peace for both peoples In November 1917, the government of Britain issued the Balfour Declaration which promised a homeland for the Jewish people in Palestine whilst also promising to protect the rights of the indigenous Arab people (who made up ninety percent of the population). However, in 1915 Britain has already promised the Arabs that after the war they would be granted independence in their own lands, including Palestine. Then in 1922 the League of Nations gave Britain the Mandate to administer Palestine, requiring her to implement the Balfour Declaration and prepare Palestine for Independence. Subsequent British Governments upheld the promise to create a Jewish Homeland but reneged on the promise to protect the rights of the Arab majority.
Thus the homeland for the Jewish people has been achieved but the League’s sacred trust to facilitate Palestinian Independence is still to be fulfilled. Almost one hundred years ago the stage was set for a struggle to control the land which has intensified from that day to this. The Balfour project was created by British citizens to highlight Britain's record in Palestine before and after the mandate. We believe that facing the consequence of our past actions honestly is the first step towards rebuilding trust. There is no peace without repentance. There is no repentance without knowledge. There is no knowledge without education. (Bishop Austin Baker)
The map shows the loss of Palestinian land from the proposed United Nations partition plan of 1947 through to the present day. The third map shows the two-state solution, with Palestinians keeping twenty-two percent of the land of historic Palestine. The final map shows the loss of Palestinian land due to the structure of the occupation – the wall, checkpoints, restricted roads, closed military areas, and Israeli settlements. Services for October
Dear Friends
1 October Trinity 16 10.00 Llansantffraed Holy Communion LW 6 pm Glascwm Village Service MJ Readings: Ezekiel 18:1-4, 25-32; Ps 25:1-9; Philippians 2:113; Matthew 21:23-32
I look forward to Bible Sunday on 29 October. Bible Sunday focuses our attention on the Bible itself which Christians believe is the “Word of God”. Our Bible comprises of two parts: the Old Testament which was originally written in Hebrew and is the holy books of the Jews and the New Testament which was originally written in Greek and records the good news of our saviour Jesus Christ through the gospels and the acts and letters of his apostles. Our Bible includes the Old Testament because Christians believe that Jesus is the fulfilment of the prophecies made in it. It is not possible to understand the message in the New Testament without reference to the Old Testament. Originally the Bible consisted of lots of separate books which were first translated from the Hebrew and the Greek into Latin at a local level in early Christian times. These translations remained separate but collectively they are known as the “Old Latin Bible” and many different versions exist. It was not until St Jerome translated the texts from the original Hebrew and Greek into Latin in the late fourth century that a complete and consistent bible became available. This is known as the Vulgate Bible. After Roman times the use of Latin by ordinary people died out, though it remained as the language of the church and the intellectual elite. The preacher would first quote the verses in Latin and then render them into English for the congregation. The Reformation of the 16th century led to the printing of authorised translations of the Bible in English and Welsh. The “King James” is the most famous version in English and the William Morgan version the most famous in Welsh. As to the content of the bible, Article 6 of the 39 Articles of the Church of England agreed in 1563 to list the books of the Old Testament dividing them between the Canonical books and the Apocrypha. It notes that all the Books of the New Testament, as they are commonly received, are Canonical and in particular that Canonical Scripture is the final authority on Salvation. All priests of the Church of England and the Church in Wales must publicly avow their faithfulness to these articles. If you find this part of our history interesting and want to know more about the Bible why not come along to our Bible Study held at Cregrina on the 10th and 24th October. If you are interested please phone Cherry on 01982 570702. Blessings Linda

October is indeed a month of change and Autumn is now with us. Whatever the weather, let us hold the warmth of the sun’s goodness in our hearts throughout the winter months as we remember that it is the warmth of the Son’s goodness that lies at the heart of all creation. Thus, through our Lord, we thank his Father for the season of growth with our continuing celebrations of Harvest. More than this, we accept that we too are God’s children and through responding to his love we offer him lives of grace that that are also part of his harvest for the world. As we decorate our churches, we may remind ourselves that Church is not just a place to which we go, it is also a place that we hold inside ourselves and for each other. Unless we nurture the space inside us that belongs to God then our spiritual growth will be hard and our worship may seem barren and empty – it is about how Christ is speaking to you as an individual with your unique past, present and future and how he can help with the particular problems that are yours alone and those that we all have in common. An intrinsic part of this relationship with Christ is the ongoing questioning through which we may discern his will for us. Our journey may well be one of a joyful discovery. This will add even more depth to our communities of faith. In our part of the world, our strength is that we naturally share so much with each other and readily turn understanding into compassion for each other. The Holy Spirit never tires from deepening our understanding of God’s love in Christ for all of us, individually and together. So, as we give thanks to God for his presence in our lives, let us dedicate ourselves to his service in love for one another. We pray for all those who bring us nourishment through dedicated nurture of all the animals and fruits of the earth. Let us always hold in our hearts those who do not receive a sufficient share of the earth’s gifts and pray for those who maintain their greed at the expense of the lives of others. We are God’s harvest! May we bring forth the fruits of unconditional love, grace and joy. All Blessings

Irfon and Wye Ministry Area Irfon Valley, Blaenau Irfon and Upper Wye Dear Friends We have come to the time of year where we celebrate the harvest. At this time it is important to remember in our prayers all of the farming community at this uncertain time with the Brexit negotiations taking place. Farming has never been an easy job. Back in the Old Testament we see stories of the difficulties of the harvest, successful and when it fails. One of these is in the book of Ruth where she is a stranger, alien, in a strange land who is literally trying to glean enough food. On our streets today we see the homeless, unloved and easily ignored. We must reach out in any way that we can. Questions that people raise about where these people belong are irrelevant. They are God’s children on God’s earth, just like us. Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Cor 9. Let us give cheerfully by way of donations to charity such as Christian Aid as well as in prayer that suffering will cease/ Let us also give great thanks for the bounteous gifts we receive as we join together in the various harvest services that we have in Irfon & Wye. Love and blessings Petra

Glass Half Full Archbishop John has said one his priorities in his new role will be a “rehabilitation of what it means to be the Church”. He said the Church must be positive about its evangelism, and positive about its role in society, and said “the glass of the Church in Wales is very much half full”. “One of the things we need to do is to change the Church’s view of itself,” he said. “People need to perhaps understand better why they come to church. It’s not just a habit, it’s not just going to a club of which they’re a member, it’s about being encouraged and enthused to become more active as Christian people in the community.” You can watch an in-depth interview with Archbishop John on the diocesan website or at https://youtu.be/jdo1hiMUzr4
