The Goldbug Collection A Croghan’s Exclusive

The Palmetto Bug is often an unwelcome guest in Charleston, but Croghan’s Jewelers has created gilded replicas, in part inspired by Poe’s story, “The Goldbug.” Now this ubiquitous urban neighbor adorns jewelry coveted by locals and visitors alike.

Whether it’s your first time to the Lowcountry, you live here or you’re making a return visit, we’ve got you covered from HIP TO HISTORIC. We’ll give you the skinny that comes from true Charleston insiders on shops, restaurants, historic sites and houses and our many quaint neighborhoods. In this issue, be sure and check out Tamara Nuenighoff, the Concierge from The Restoration, one of Charleston’s newest and most beautifully curated hotels, and some of her favorite places to send guests. Another insider is featured on our Local Loves page — Amy Heath, the Director of Tourism for the City of North Charleston — along with what she loves about the area. Going out on the town? Whether you’re visiting or live here, you’ll want to raise eyebrows. Check out the best places in town for a tint, wax or just a good shaping. And when you’re ready for a meal in this fabulous foodie city, look over our list of some of the best gluten-free meals in town. New this quarter is our illustrated map to the Old Village of Mount Pleasant. Be sure and explore this picturesque neighborhood just five minutes over the Ravenel Bridge. The unibrow look was made famous by Frida Kahlo, but not many people can rock it like she did. If you hit town for a wedding or special event and realize that your brows need a professional fix, here are some places that will thread, sugar, wax, pluck, tint or even give them extensions if they’re a bit scanty. 10 | INSIDEOUT

Brow Tips

COSBAR, CAREN

TIP: For thicker brows consider Eyebrow Tinting. Lasts up to 3 weeks. 201 King St., Downtown Charleston 843.793.1776 cosbar.com/charleston

OUT OF HAND, CHARLOTTE TIP: Shaping the brows with the the brow kit from Jane Iredale keeps the hair from growing back so soon like when you thread or wax! The up-keep is less than with other techniques! 113 Pitt St., Mount Pleasant 843.856.3585 shopoutofhand.com

PINK DOT, BECCA TIP: The 3D Brow: Step 1- Brow Pencil; Step 2 - Brow Powder; Step 3 - Brow Gel. I personally love Brett Brow Duo pencils and powder to fill in sparseness and create structure. Then I set it and forget it with a Clear brow gel from Blinc. 227 Meeting St., Downtown Charleston 843.637.4111 pinkdotbeautybar.com

URBAN NIRVANA, PATTY TIP: A well-shaped eyebrow is artistic and can greatly enhance your beauty as well as correct minor imperfections. Brows are unique to each Individual and should be designed to last a lifetime, not to follow the latest trend, as waxing can be permanent. 141 Wentworth St., Downtown Charleston 843.724.6555 urbannirvana.com

One of the Charleston area’s hidden treasures. Just might be the best neighborhood in America. The original town setting of this one-of-a-kind hamlet will transform you back to a simpler time. Dine, shop or stroll the surrounding avenues of beautiful homes, some over 200 years old. Take in the harbor breezes at the end of nearly every road or ride out to the old bridge at the end of Pitt Street and marvel at the many birds and other local wildlife, such as otters and seasonal manatee sightings. One of the best views anywhere featuring beautiful sunsets over Charleston’s iconic harbor.

SULLIVAN’S

Historic old beach houses, celebrity mansions, and local restaurants and bars coexist peacefully for the most part on this beautiful barrier island with family-friendly beaches. You won’t find any hotels or high-rise condos here, but you will find stiff fines for drinking on the beach and unlicensed and off-leash dogs. All the restaurants are on Middle Street, the main drag. Parking can be a problem – patience advised. About a 15-minute drive from downtown.

The fort dates from the Revolutionary War and is open for touring. Kids will love to roam. The Visitors’ Center across the street from the fort has restrooms and exhibits and is open daily except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Days. 1214 Middle St.

STORAGE

Chances are you won’t need everything you moved to your new house in Charleston, but you might not be ready to trash it yet. There are dozens of storage units in the area, or have a POD delivered, fill it at your leisure and have it placed in a climate-controlled center until you’re ready to deal. Out of sight, out of mind.

PODS.com 7704 Southrail Rd. N. Charleston 843-552-1899

STUFF PLUS

If you have clothes or furnishings you don’t want or have room for in your new home, chances are that someone else would find a use for them. Donate them Goodwill, and they’ll probably find a second life. There are several retail stores around the Charleston area, some of which have handy drive-through drop-offs. Go to palmettogoodwill. net for a location near you.

UH OH! STORM WARNINGS

Get savvy about planning and preparing for Mr. or Ms. Hurricane. Learn your escape routes should there be a mandatory evacuation and what supplies you should have on hand if you just have to batten down the hatches (other than some cases of Beanie Weenis and beer). Check the facts from South Carolina Emergency Management. scemd.org

PALMETTO BUGS

The first time one of these cockroaches on steroids flies at you, you’ll probably begin packing to move back out of state. Just stay calm, and hire a good exterminator to make regular visits to keep them out of your house. And, of course, tread carefully if you get up for a snack in the middle of the night.
