Mehfil-e-Milad held at nUMl ISLAMABAD STAFF REPORT

A Mehfil-e-Milad was held at National University of Modern Languages (NUML) Islamabad by the Department of Urdu Language in connection with the birth anniversary of Holy Prophet (PBUH), says a press release issued here on Thursday by NUML. The IT auditorium of the university was decorated beautifully and lamps were lit up to make it appear as per the significance of the ceremony. Besides the soulful rendition by the Naat Khawans, the reverence in eyes and bent heads made the mehfil more spiritual and a source of inspiration. Melodious voices of Naat Khawans’ held the jam-packed IT hall spell bound and the audience kept on showering accolades, admirations, and recited the holy verses to pay humble tribute to their beloved Prophet (PBUH). Students of departments of Urdu, English, Arabic, Hindi, Japanese, Chinese, and management sciences recited naats respectively to enlighten the audience. Teachers and faculty members also recited darood and naats and a naat by Abubakar Bhutta, Lecturer Arabic Department, was admired largely by the audience. In a passion to express one’s tribute to the Holy Prophet, a couple of people from audience also wished to recite Naats. The ‘Mefil’ was attended by NUML Rector Maj Gen (r) Masood Hasan, Director General Brig Azam Jamal, Robeena Shaheen, Head of Urdu Department, and by a great number of students, heads of departments, deans and faculty members of different departments of the university. At the end of mehfil, every one recited darood together and prayed for the security and safety of the country. It was pledged that teachings of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) would be followed to acquire the welfare and success in one’s life.

PIde awards 20th Phd in economics ISLAMABAD STAFF REPORT

The Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) awarded its 20th PhD in Economics to Miraj-ulHaq. In his PhD dissertation, Haq developed a theoretical model incorporating the roles of international trade and human capital in the process of economic growth. The model has been empirically tested on a sample of 23 developing countries and the results of the research show that international trade plays an important role in enhancing the prospects of growth in developing countries through its positive effects on accumulation of human capital. The research was evaluated by international examiners including Professor Wesley Peterson of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, USA, and Professor Muhammad Mushtaq of University of Michigan, USA.

PM presents Rs10m cheque for school construction ISLAMABAD ONLiNE

RIME Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani presented a cheque of Rs10 million to Dr Alexander John Malik, Bishop of Lahore at PM’s House here today for the construction of buildings of St Denys School Muree which was burnt down in 2010. The Prime Minister on the occasion said that the wellbeing of the minorities was one of his priorities and also part of the Pakistan People’s Party manifesto. The Prime Minister appreciated the contributions made by the Missionary Schools for spreading of quality education in the country. He said that he himself received his primary education at St. Mary Convent School in Multan. Dr Alexander John said that these buildings were historical as they were built in 1882 and their burning was a big loss of heritage. He thanked the Prime Minister for the generous financial assistance for the construction of the school buildings which was reflective of his

commitment towards the welfare of minorities in Pakistan. MotoRwAy PoLIcE REcovERS foUR vEhIcLES: National Highways and Motorway Police (NH & MP) Wednesday recovered 4 stolen vehicles arresting 4 culprits from different areas on motorway. As per details, Rawalpindi Police informed Motorway Police that a white colour Suzuki Carry Bolan No. RD-463, Model 2011 has been stolen from the Jurisdiction of Pirwadhai Police Station, Rawalpindi and requested for help in recovering the said Suzuki vehicle. On this information the Motorway Police alerted all its patrolling officers. After few minutes the NH and MP officers SPO Rafaqat Hayat and APO Shafiulllah observed a suspicious Suzuki Carry of the same

colour in the area of Burhan on Motorway (M-1). The NH & MP officers signaled to stop but the driver of the Suzuki instead of stopping, tried to run away. However, on chasing they succeeded to stop the said Suzuki Carry through commando action and arrested a culprit namely Ramna Khalid S/O Fazal Dad, resident of Abbottabad. Motorway Police took the Suzuki in to their custody, the original Number plate was found. In another incident, a Tracker Company from Lahore informed Motorway Police that a white Suzuki Carry Van No. LEE-8785, Model 2007 has been stolen from Jurisdiction of Nawab Town Police Station Lahore, and requested for help to recover the said Suzuki vehicle. The NH&MP officers PO Naveed Hussain and PO Amir Nawaz succeeded to stop the said Suzuki Carry through commando action on Motorway (M-2) in the area of Chakri and arrested a culprit Ghulam Mustafa S/O Muhammad Mansha, resident of Okara.

Un-HABItAt, ndMA hold disaster recovery seminar ISLAMABAd: UN-HABITAT in collaboration with NDMA (National Disaster Management Authority) arranged a two-day conference to draw national and international attention on the post-disaster recovery process based on the lessons learnt from the natural calamities that have affected the country since 2005. The National Conference on Learning from Disasters 2012 concluded on Thursday. It was focused specifically on housing reconstruction and rehabilitation. UN-HABITAT Country Programme Manager Siamak Moghaddam highlighted some of the UN’s projects that have been initiated in collaboration with government institutions, like NDMA and donor countries, including Japan, United Kingdom, Canada, Sweden, Korea and other independent organisations. NdMA chAIRMAN dR ZAfAR IQBAL QAdIR SAId: “NDMA and UNHABITAT are working on hazard resistant construction and developing safety mechanisms.” He added that the two organisations have conducted a series of consultative workshops throughout the country and have identified their needs. Senate Deputy Chairman Mir Jan Muhammad Khan Jamali, representatives from the Planning Commission and Pakistan Institute of Development Economics, environmental economics experts, media representatives and experts from universities and engineering institutes attended the conference. QAU ranked best varsity followed by PIEAS, Aga Khan ISLAMABAD KASHiF AbbASi

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) on Thursday announced the ranking of Pakistani universities, both public and private sector, in which Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU) was ranked number 1 university among all the varsities of the country followed by Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS) and The Aga Khan University, Karachi. The universities were given ranking on the basis of quality teaching and research. Higher Education Commission Chairman Dr Javaid R Laghari made this announcement at a press conference held here at the commission’s secretariat. Sharing further details of the top ten universities of the country, the HEC chair-

man said University of Agriculture Faisalabad ranked Pakistan’s 4th best university followed by University of the Punjab, Lahore, National University of Science and Technology (NUST), Islamabad, Arid Agriculture University, Rawalpindi, University of Health Sciences, Lahore, COMSATS Institute of Information Technology and Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). The HEC chairman said there were 132 universities in the public and private sector throughout the country and 116 were examined for ranking. He said universities that were established after December 2008 as well as distance education universities were excluded from the ranking lists. “Ranking is a quality indicator and this information will help shed light on key indicators of higher education institutions in

Pakistan,” he said. Dr Javaid Laghari said it would also provide a transparent mechanism to universities on how they compared against their peers and would inculcate a spirit of competition to raise the standard of education. To a query, the HEC chairman said, “Ranking criteria for universities include student intake as well as graduates produced at BS, MS and PhD levels, number of qualified faculty members, student-teacher ratio, quality of research produced and published in journals of international repute, physical and technological infrastructure, international collaborations, resource generation and sports facilities,” he added. cAtEGoRy-wISE RANKINGS of UNIvERSItIES: Agriculture/Veterinary: In agriculture sector, University of Agricul-
