AEL Monfils of France served 15 aces to beat John Blake of the United States 76 (5), 7-5 in the first round of the US Men's Clay Court Championships on Monday. Blake, once ranked No 4, played his 51st match at River Oaks Country Club where he is a crowd favourite but Monfils won cheers for his performance in his first match in the city. Monfils, who played in only 10 tournaments last year because of a knee injury, matched the sixthhighest total of aces in the tournament. He will next face top-seeded Nicolas Almagro of Spain. Rhyne Williams of the United States, playing on a wild card, beat Guido Pella of Argentina 7-5, 7-5 in an earlier first-round match. Monfils broke Blake in the 11th game of the second set on three straight errors by Blake and wrapped it up quickly with a love final game that included two aces. He won at the first match point

on Blake's backhand error. "I am 100 percent with the level the way I played," Monfils said. "I was happy the way I was moving. I can say it's a nightmare (injury) behind me so I am very happy." Blake held after six break points in the eighth game of the first set but his serve failed him in the 10th game and the set eventually went to a tiebreaker. The score was tied at 3-3 in the tiebreaker when Monfils won three straight points and then capped the set with an overhead at set point. "He really makes it tough out there," Blake said. "He makes you work hard to win points and combining that with a pretty big first serve. When that's going in, that makes a big difference." Monfils applauded the crowd after his win but said he didn't hear their cheers during the match. "It's been four weeks since I played so I was more focused on winning this match and hoping there was no more pain," Monfils said. "The crowd was very fair today. I knew it would be tough because James is a big favourite here."

BRITISH DAvIS Cup HERO READY fOR THE AxE: British Davis Cup hero Dan Evans admits the return of Andy Murray means he is facing the axe for his country's next tie despite an epic performance in their victory over Russia. Britain, playing without world No 2 Murray, battled back from 2-0 down to beat Russia 3-2 at Coventry's Ricoh Arena on Sunday, with Evans, ranked 325 in the world, producing the best match of his life to crush world number 80 Evgeny Donskoy 6-4, 6-4, 6-1 in the deciding rubber. In Murray's absence, Evans has won three Davis Cup rubbers against players ranked much higher than himself. But Britain's first Davis Cup victory from 2-0 down since 1930 means Leon Smith's side go forward to a World Group play-off in September with the chance to return to the elite group of 16 nations. US Open and Olympic champion Murray has committed to playing in the tie, which could pit Britain against the likes of Spain, Switzerland, Germany or Australia.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic may miss the Monte Carlo Masters. Belgrade – World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, who suffered an ankle injury during the Davis Cup World Group quarterfinals with the United States, said his participation at the Monte Carlo

Masters was uncertain, media reported Monday. “The season on the clay begins... I would like to play in Monte Carlo, where I live. I love that tournament, I am optimist, but I do not know if it is realistic,” Djokovic was quoted as saying by Serbia's Beta News Agency. Talking about his injury, Djokovic said he had “avoided the worst degree of

distortion”. “My ankle swelled... but I have to check how serious it is and then to estimate if I can play in Monte Carlo,” from April 14 to 21, he said. But the No. 1 was more optimistic regarding his participation at the French Open at Roland Garros in Paris, which is the only Grand Slam that eludes him. “Roland Garros is still far away,” he

added. Djokovic has earlier said that winning in Paris was one of his main goals for 2013, along with the Davis Cup. Djokovic's victory over Sam Querrey on Sunday helped take Serbia into the semi-finals of the Davis Cup, where they will meet Canada in September.
