Tareen revealed the information in a tweet amid much uncertainty with regard to his final decision. Multan Sultans, whose contract was terminated by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) upon the failure of the former to meet the financial obligations, was up for bid as the sixth PSL franchise. In a statement issued by the cricket governing body, it said that the mentioned team was unable to meet the financial agreements thence its membership was terminated. Tareen, earlier, expressed his interest in the buyoff of the sixth PSL team; previously known as Multan Sultans and said that he is in contact with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials in this regard.

HE International Cricket Council (ICC) announced its costs award in the legal proceedings between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). BCCI had won the legal battle against Pakistan over the issue of bilateral cricketing ties. The PCB had requested the ICC to look into the matter after India refused to play two bilateral series with the arch-rivals citing lack of governmental clearance. The Dispute Panel has determined that the PCB should pay 60 per cent of: “(a) the [BCCI’s] Claimed Costs; and (b) the administrative costs and ex-

penses of the panel which fall within the scope of paragraph 11.4 of the T/R (including, without limitation, the fees of the Tribunal members, and the costs and expenses they incurred in relation to this matter), the figure whereof is to be supplied to the PCB by the ICC.” On behalf of the dispute panel formed under the terms of reference of the ICC Disputes Resolutions Committee (DRC), the ICC had announced that the panel had dismissed the PCB’s claim against the BCCI. The judgement is binding and non-appealable. The PCB had claimed losses of up to USD 70 million after two series weren’t played in November 2014 and December 2015. While the PCB tried to move the ball through talks, the BCCI made it clear that the government had the final say in this matter. PCB then sent a dispute notice to the Indian board

Understanding’ between BCCI and PCB wherein the Indian and Pakistan cricket board had entered into an agreement that the two countries would play six series comprising at least two Tests, five ODIs and two T20Is between December 2015 and December 2023 with four of them being hosted by the PCB. The move never went forward as the BCCI cited lack of approval from the Indian government. Herbert Smith Freehills along with British lawyer QC Ian Mills fought India’s case while PCB was represented by Khwaja Ahmad Hosain, Advocate Supreme Court of Pakistan, Alexandros Panayides of Clifford Chance, London and Salman Nasser, PCB GM Legal Affairs. The ICC Disputes Panel was made up of three members — Michael Beloff QC, Jan Paulsson and Dr Annabelle Bennett.

in May and to the International Cricket Council in November. Hindustan Times quoted BCCI treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry as saying that the stance of the BCCI office bearers stood vindicated after the judgement and he was also quick to thank all those who deposed for the board in the matter. “I am yet to read the decision but this should now put to rest all speculation regarding this matter and it vindicates the stand of the then office-bearers of the BCCI in this regard who were engaging with the other boards on the FTP at that point in time. The BCCI is grateful to all those who deposed for the board and to its legal team, specifically Raghu Raman, Sr. Advocate and Ian Mills, QC,” he had said. As per claims by the Pakistan board, then BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel had signed the ‘Memorandum of

Kusal Mendis and Angelo Mathews remained unbeaten on centuries as rain allowed for just 13 overs of play on the final day at Wellington’s Basin Reserve, drawing the first Test, reported ICC. First wet weather delayed the start of the day’s play on Wednesday, 19 December, by close to ninety minutes. Then after just 50-odd minutes of play arrived another bout of showers which resulted in a damp end to a fine Test match. Sri Lanka came into the fifth day still trailing New Zealand’s first innings score by 37 runs despite the herculean effort by Mendis and Mathews, who had batted all of the fourth day on a fantastic batting wicket. They finally finished on 287/3. After New Zealand had posted a massive 578 on the back of Tom Latham’s un-

Shakib fined for shouting at umpire DHAKA Agencies

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan was fined 15 per cent of his match fee for shouting at the umpire during Monday’s opening Twenty20 international against West Indies, the International Cricket Council said. Shakib was also handed one demerit point, his second such penalty since the introduction of the system in September 2016, for the offence during hosts´ eightwicket defeat. Shakib now has two demerit points, having been handed one for an offence during a Twenty20 against Sri Lanka in March this year. Shakib showed dissent while batting after the umpire did not call a wide in the 14th over of the Bangladesh innings. “He first shouted at the umpire and then got involved in a prolonged discussion,” said an ICC statement issued late Tuesday. “After the end of the match, Shakib admitted the offence and accepted the sanction,” it said, adding no formal hearing was required.

beaten 264, Sri Lanka were in a tough position at 13/3 in their second dig, and were faced with the possibility of an innings defeat, having scored just 282 in the first innings. But Mendis and Mathews showed tremendous fight against everything the New Zealand attack could throw at them. They hardly even offered a half chance throughout their vigil of well over 400 balls each. The duo continued to display the same grit in the few overs on day five under slightly more bowler-friendly conditions. Mendis finished unbeaten on 141, while Mathews scored a fine 120*. New Zealand would have felt they still had the chance to force a result had rain not interfered, even as Sri Lanka will rest happy in the knowledge that they earned their luck. The sides will next meet for the second and final Test of the series for the Boxing Day (26 December) Test at Hagley Oval.

Former Australian pace spearhead Mitchell Johnson Wednesday blasted India captain Virat Kohli as "disrespectful" and "silly" in his approach to fellow skipper Tim Paine during the Perth Test. The pair had heated exchanges during the game that Australia won, at one point prompting intervention from the umpire. It was reported that Kohli belittled Paine as just "a stand-in captain", although India's team management angrily denied he said it. The retired Johnson said the famously combative Kohli's antics were unnecessary. "At the end of the match, you should be able to look each other in the eyes, shake hands and say 'great contest'," he wrote in a column for Fox Sports. "Virat Kohli could not do that with Tim Paine, shaking the Australian captain's hand but barely making eye contact with him. To me, that is disrespectful. "Kohli gets away with more than most cricketers simply because he is Virat Kohli and he gets placed on a pedestal but this Test left the Indian captain looking silly," he added. After the game, which Australia won by 146 runs to the level the series 1-1, both Paine and Kohli attempted to play down their on-field sledging, which was

often picked up by stump microphones. Kohli described it as simply banter that was part and parcel of Test match cricket. "As long as there is no swearing the line doesn't get crossed. And no personal attacks," he said. He added that the remarks in Perth were nothing compared to their Australian tour in 2014 when he claimed to have been called a "spoilt brat". But Johnson said Kohli's behaviour made a mockery of his pre-series claims that he was a changed man and didn't plan to initiate any confrontations. "What we saw this Test says otherwise," he said. "From my experiences with him and what I am seeing as an observer now, not

Mystery Indian spinner stuns at IPL auction JAIpUR Agencies

Little-known Indian mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy hit the jackpot at the Indian Premier League auction Tuesday after he was snared for $1.2 million by Kings XI Punjab. The price tag surprised pundits gathered at Jaipur for the 2019 Twenty20 tournament auction, where the 27-year-old only had a base price of two million rupees ($28,400). After a fierce bidding war, the bowler emerged as the most expensive player in this year´s sell-off along with Indian left-arm seamer Jaydev Unadkat, bagged by Rajasthan Royals for the same price. “What a bid! Varun Chakaravarthy joins us for the new season of IPL!” the Punjab franchise tweeted. Chakravarthy began playing cricket when he was 13 but took up

architecture after several rejections in age-group cricket. He later returned to the game, honing his skills as a spinner able to bowl both off and leg breaks, with quite a few tricks under his hat. More than 350 players went under the hammer Tuesday, including 120 international cricketers, in what is the world´s wealthiest cricket league. West Indies players proved to be the top draw among the foreigners, with big-hitter Carlos Brathwaite going for $707,150 to the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise owned by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan. “What a fantastic buy. We all know what Carlos did at Eden back in 2016! Everyone remembers the name!” KKR said on Twitter. That year, Brathwaite slammed four consecutive sixes to help West

Indies win the World T20 final against England at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. KKR, led by India’s Dinesh Karthik, finished third in the IPL 2018. They have won the lucrative championship twice, in 2012 and 2014. Another West Indies heavy hitter Shimron Hetmyer was lapped up for $594,195 by Royal Challengers Bangalore. The 21-year-old, who impressed during the recent West Indies tour of India, will be making his IPL debut. England’s rising star Sam Curran was sold for one million dollars to Kings XI Punjab. His base price was $283,460. Fellow Brit Jonny Bairstow won his first IPL contract, picked by Sunrisers Hyderabad for $311,982. The wicketkeeper-batsman had gone unsold in last year´s auction.

much has changed. It was disappointing and that is not the only area where he let himself down." Johnson also took offence with Kohli's failure to acknowledge the crowd's applause after Peter Handscomb took a controversial catch to dismiss him for a sublime 123 in the first innings. "To me, the catch was given out so you accept it and move on and as a player who has scored a hundred you acknowledge the standing ovation," he said. Johnson and Kohli have history. In 2014 at Melbourne, Johnson threw the ball and hit Kohli when attempting a runout, sparking a heated debate. "After play, he came out and said he had 'no reason to respect' me. He lost me then," said Johnson.

Pak women coach no longer in the run for indian assignment LAHORE: Pakistan women’s cricket coach Mark Coles has withdrawn his application for the job of Indian head coach after being shortlisted along with Gary Kirsten, Ramesh Powar, Herschelle Gibbs and others. The position of head coach of the Indian women team opened up after the BCCI decided against handing an extension to interim head coach Ramesh Powar, whose contract expired on November 30. One of the applicants was the incumbent Pakistan women head coach Coles, who was shortlisted and contacted for an interview. However, he withdrew the application ascribing it to a “confusion” arising from a thirdparty agent. “There is some confusion about this… through a third party,” Coles told ESPNcricinfo on Tuesday, adding that he had already informed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) about his application reaching the BCCI and, subsequently, apprised both the boards of his withdrawal.
