Introduction Since my early fascination towards automobiles, my curious interest was to see automobiles as fictional characters, each having a purpose on the road, each machine has their own story behind. Drawing cars gave me a joy, my early infatuation was with tractors and big trucks with an infinite number of wheels. Which i believed, automobile as living and breathing mechanical creatures. Involved in our lives, each having its own story. My childhood home was inside army cantonment. Gallant green painted Maruti Suzuki gypsy was a common site at my school’s parking. I was always fascinated with army vehicles, they are still my influence. Automobile are much more than just vehicles. I personal believe that They are the tool that will help us people understand our planet and its scale.the experience of travel is much more than covering the distance. An experience to see earth for what it is. Automobiles have changed how we live for the past 100 years. Great stories have lived in the past. So, as of now. I will be graduating as transportation designer, and I want to create stories. Living in the present times where the automobile is a part of our daily lives, we depend on it. Considering our Indian road condition, we are Habituated. Our road behaviors result in some unseen consequences on a larger scale. Which is working against it. Leaving users in Discomfort. We have been following the traffic regulation set by the west, which has been modified and molded to our benefit. Results are chaotic, there is a need to understand why it happened ?what effects the drivers? Psychology study of the mind, under these situations, have been on a study. People are often agitated and in discomfort. Which has a overall impact on large scale.what is solution ? can we solve it ? There is potential problem and this is my attempt at it. 3

“Our office was located at Gurgaon, very close to Delhi, the traffic, problem could be experienced first hand. After a day long of driving we felt, it was a complete waste of time , Majority of times we were idling at a standstill pace. The time we spent waiting for another car to move forward an inch, It felt a long tiring laborious effort. Time could have been utilised for a constructive cause. We as occupants felt aggregated as we lost patience for a Monotonous cycle of, movement and halt in a slow crawling traffic which often spread for large distances. Leaving us miserable while we waited with an agitated mind set. Which had impact on our daily lives. This thesis aims is to find a design direction , that could ease daily commute “

introduction to THE subject

We live in a world, where we are in a constant need to travel. And if you were asked what was your means of transport, we immediately reply in favor of a personal car. And some would prefer public transport. When we evaluate their choice, all prefer an option which favors for personal space, but when we rational think to save time, money and effort. We chose an option which happens to be crowded, we still chose it despite the comfort, we have to, considering the nature of our population, we are left with no choice we continue present condition, our future’s discomfort will increase. Considering time ahead we need a change, which will help us to commute freely now when we ask what psychological of freedom means we have reduced a conclusion that we need a place where we are ourselves.

This thesis explores a concept of the public transport system in which helps user with private space within and also explore possibility reduce psychological uncertainty on Indian road.

21

preface

Man is a social animal and his need to be a part of heard, but that doctrine of thought has made it chaotic. It has come to this point where we have accepted this discomfort. And are willing to carry it on. We are blindly following our civilisation heard to make our ends meet. Our country is seeing a rapid change, we are planning smart cities, We are heading towards growth, our future is secured but at the cost of what? In this rat-race for surviving what are we missing? Empathy, humility and peace. Is it too much to ask? Our in early doctrine like the Advantage Vedanta where they emphasis on the human state of mind to function in a society, the emphasis on a self. An individual. Now as an automotive design how can I envision a concept of an automobile that favors of our well-being?

22

methodology

To understand what the user’s psychology of what is essential to inculcate a peaceful environment in the most public spaces. The aim to find what is really required. Semantics followed on this thesis is derived from a process of psychoanalytical investigation, to find what is happens in the daily lives of the user in our case it’s the general audience who chose their means for Commute. Understand what is the present mindset of people ,who chose a personal car over a collective alternative.and why? The aim is to find a solution that addresses the issue of privacy in our social spaces. As an automotive designer, we often are confronted in validating our vision in the real world scenario, we hope to bring about a change in how we bring an object to real world usage. Considering the old automotive design process. Which relies heavily upon the concerns like “market study “ and other vague concerns. Which often fail to understand in depth.

There is a need to understand the demand at its core, this is where a psychological investigation is required.

23

3

brief

to explore a collective mode of transport , that eases the public commute

24

How do we identifying the present problem? People have to reach there homes or workplace there is a need to commute to their destination, considering the nature of Indian road scenario. The commute is a stressful short period. Which has an effect the state of mind. Often left aggregated and distressed

Can we find a solution which eases daily use? Considering the road scenario, it’s difficult to bring about change in this vastly unpredictable city road. so we have to look for factors effecting it. Psycological of users

CAN PERSONAL SPACE EFFECT MINDSET OF THE USER ? As per a psychological study, people with comfortable commute performed better against people with an unpleasant commute.which does have a profound impact on their daily lives.

Sociology study for individualism Individualism is the moral stance, political philosophy, ideology, or social outlook that emphasises the moral worth of the individual. Individualists promote the exercise of one’s goals and desires and so value independence and self-reliance. Individualism holds that a person taking part in society attempts to learn and discover what his or her own interests are on a personal basis, without a presumed following of the interests of a societal structure (an individualist need not be an egoist). The individualist does not follow one particular philosophy, rather creates an amalgamation of elements of many, based on personal interests in particular aspects that she/he finds of use. And considering present day condition of behaviors on Indian roads, its could be concluded that there is a need consider to give user space to be themselves. Would have a profound change in the mindset of the user.

cars and individualism

Cars contribute to local air pollution, traffic danger, congestion and poor physical health due to lack of exercise. If the final goal of sustainable development is to sustain or improve the quality of life for all, now and into the long-term future, the current growth in private car use is clearly unsustainable. Understanding why most people prefer using a car over other modes of transport for their daily travel, and how they can be persuaded to use their cars less or even abandon them altogether, is therefore an important goal for psychology. When trying to tackle car use, it is important to consider the role of cars in modern-day societies, which extend beyond the simple utility function as a mode of transport. Cars are important symbols of status and success. Cars provide places where people can feel safe and secure. Such functions cannot be provided by any collective mode of transport. The relative importance of these functions and the extent to which they may form barriers for change needs to be understood in much greater detail. But symbolic and affective aspects may not only form barriers for change.

Affect: Driving can be stressful. A recent study demonstrated that car commuters experience more stress and negative mood than train users. Environmental psychology has an important role to play in understanding travel choices and helping to develop more sustainable forms of transport. It can provide a better and more indepth understanding of the real costs and benefits of driving and mode choices. It can help inform transport policy by providing insight into when and how people make transport decisions. But the research field is relatively new, and a great deal more work is needed to fully understand (un)sustainable travel choices. Article by Birgitta Gatersleben is in the Department of Psychology, University of Surrey

Cars provide places where people can feel safe and secure on the road. Such functions cannot be provided by any collective mode of transport.

27

collectivism vs individualism

there is a need to find moral equilibrium between our idology for efficient peacful society.

collectivism

individualism

Our society has been organised as a collective functioning structure, and it depends on it , The structure is greatly influenced by transportation system adopted from a pre-existing system exclusive to its environment. when we examine the structure, we find there is a bottleneck in our transportation systems because of the sheer usage from a massive population, in which each individual has his/her personal preference

28

Their preference may differ, our collective transportation system fails to serve its user at an individual level.

What would be our future of commuting?

Empathy for one another: While clarity of intention and awareness gets vus onto the path to success, empathy and compassion helps us to gain support of others. Both in Bhagavad Geeta as well as Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, friendliness (maitri) and kindness/compassion (karuna) are two attitudes that are encouraged in working with others. When you begin to see yourself in others and feel for others genuinely, you will find that others reciprocate those feelings. Time and again, I have found that affection (vatsalyata bhava) and warmth towards to new people always brought positive results. When the situation had conflicts and divisive, these attitudes of maitri and karuna were able to diffuse that tension and create some ‘openness’ to an amicable solution. What is empathy? It is like “walking in another’s shoes.” It implies the imaginative act of being the other person. Empathy is the foundation for emotional intelligence. By being kind and empathetic when you could be

Empathic Arising, Creativity, Action I’m starting to like the term Empathic Creativity and Empathic Arising for this. Once connection is created, taking creative action together. There’s a quality to the action which is very connected and has a deep resonance. It’s responding in an appropriate way to the other by holding their needs, values, feelings, (common humanity) etc. in mind in the action process. Empathy is when the blocks to action are removed, that do not exclude. Until an adequate level of self, mirrored and imaginative empathy are in place, empathic action may be blocked. Also looking for creative ways to resolve conflict. Our minds are like a puzzle solving machine, through Self-Empathy, Mirrored Empathy and Imaginative Empathy we see ourselves reflected in others and they in us. Our minds automatically try to solve the puzzle of organizing our shared experience, which is Empathic Creativity.

35

36

Appreciation for each other and what you receive: While empathy opens the door, appreciation welcomes you in. Vedanta tells us to tell the truth that is pleasing to others and withhold what is disliked even if it is the truth. (satyam bhuyat, priyam bhuyat, na bhuyat satyam-apriyam) It does not mean that we should lie to please others, but it maybe better for people to find such truth themselves. Appreciation is not flattery but genuine acknowledgment of another’s contribution. By letting you know that I appreciate what you have done for me, genuinely and specifically, I let you know that I honor and respect who you are. Appreciating a person and their work boosts morale and amplifies what brought that appreciation in the first place. However, one can only appreciate others to the extent that one appreciates oneself. So appreciation is also about self acceptance. How does one practice self acceptance? Make it a ritual every day to find something positive that you have done or some contribution that you have made to others. Even if the work did not yet produce the desired result, appreciate the steps you have taken so far. Similarly appreciate what others have done, even if the results are not produced the first time they try it. Be authentic when you give such feedback and only then discuss how to improve future efforts and results.

Self-Empathy Sensory awareness of our own internal feelings and internal state. Turning your attention inwards into your inner visceral feelings. Getting connected with yourself. Becoming self aware of what is happening inside ourselves without judgments. Listening to your inner feelings and experiences. Facilitating inner dialog between different feelings. Labeling your inner experiences, feelings and needs. Translating inner judgments into feelings and needs. When we are heard by someone else, it actually helps us feel into our own self more deeply. This is the essence of much of therapy. Having good friends listen to us has the same effect Anything that reduces stress and raises the level of Oxytocin in our bodies helps. Meditation, mindfulness practices, focusing, yoga, aikido and the arts, for example, are a few of the many ways to foster self-empathy.

Stretching beyond your own limits: We operate mostly on autopilot (under the influence of Maya). We become comfortable with ‘karma theory’ and when we fail, we say that it is our fate. While our fate might have something to do with our circumstances, if we don’t learn from those failures and take actions that stretch us beyond our comfort zone, we are not using our free will (sveccha) to break out of our karma. Sveccha came from two words ‘Sva’ and ‘iccha’ meaning my desire. This is where we make choices and the clarity of our intention helps us immensely. When we are stretched, we gain access to our creativity and passion. People are naturally uncomfortable taking risks and failing because we focus only on the end result. We don’t accept or appreciate failure very well in our culture. Each ‘failure’ could create a mental block in us and create boundaries around us. Most such boundaries are self-imposed, though we like to blame others for their contribution. By learning to stretch even though we don’t want to, we begin to break those mental barriers and discover untapped potential. Aspiration and desperation are two good motivators for stretching beyond our limits. And curiosity, genuine inquiry (not inquisition), empathy, and appreciation provide the impetus and support for people stretching beyond their limits and discovering new possibilities. To practice this principle, find opportunities to learn and be vulnerable. Be willing to fail and look stupid and ask questions instead of making assumptions. Practice telling the truth when you are not sure what the implications are. Interestingly, you will find out that you are modeling a behavior that leads to ‘stretching the limits.’ You are creating an environment of nurturing and caring in which other people let their guards down and discover themselves to be bigger than their own imagination!

Empathy and Contemporary interpretations

Is it my role as an artist to say something, to express, to be Expressive? I think it’s my role as an artist to bring to expression, it’s not my role to be expressive. I’ve got nothing particular to say, I don’t have any message to give anyone. But it is my role to bring to expression, let’s say, to define means that allow Phenomenological and other perceptions which one might use, one might work with, and then move towards a poetic existence. -Anish Kapoor

Questioning the design Direction How are hired car perceived? Why does a user choose a taxi? Why is there a constant need to Communicate on Indian roads? Can design bring about change? Can empathy influence the design process?

43

Maybe in the future our economical growth sky Rocket high , but we Would lose on basic human morality,if our present condition persists .

44

Indian cities are expanding in great number, but the Transportation system has not been evolving.with its usage. We still follow a system which is compatible to the west. Our Indian scenario demands specific attention.

communication and road behavours

Why does traffic noise exists on Indian roads?

46

There is always a constant background of honking at every direction, every habituated Indian driver communicates with a horn to navigate in an unpredictable environment. clearly, there is a need for a means to communicate.

Can we reduce the human Responsibility

All drivers share the responsibility to get Organized and work more efficiently 47

48

National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plans to add around 50,000 km of road network in the next five to six years with an investment potential of nearly $250 billion

Our current infrastructure is adequate to deploy driving assisting aid .

We cannot have complete autonomous cars. But we have Technology like lane assists for car platooning, organize Road behaviors. 49

9

technology Battery technology Present day technology like the Faraday Future just unveiled its first electric car for production It has a range of more than 300 miles per charge.

Partial Automation The driving mode-speci C execution by one or more driver assistance systems of both steering and acceleration/ deceleration using information about the driving environment and with the expectation that the human driver perform all remaining aspects of the dynamic driving task

50

Dynamic driving task includes the operational (steering, braking, accelerating, monitoring the vehicle and roadway) and tactical (responding to events, determining when to change lanes, turn, use signals, etc.) aspects of the driving task, but not the strategic (determining destinations and waypoints) aspect of the driving task.

Communication Interating with the world around gives a sence of presence, it is a character interaction to its environment. this might be useful in indian serenaro where there is a constant need to communicate.

Understanding users

Average user need for personal space remain the same at the dispite their indifference of social choices with each other, the aim of this thesis is to serve all users, serve its purpose at an individual level. to conceptualise a space that will help user for a easy and peaceful commute.

when spare time becomes a feature, which could help a user to utilise time efficiently for his/her daily life. 55

Design statement : Find a design solution that helps people commute in taxi with their OWN personal space.

56

Overview Can we lay the foundation for ecosystem , which we can accept autonomous assist to improve our way at how we commute on indian roads.

57

12

conclusion The research on individualisum helped this thesis understand road behaviours of users. problems faced ,factors affecting the problem. the unpredictable nature of traffic. Then through the design process, we identified what factors are involved in envisioning a concept of a taxi. As our autorickshaw and Hindustan ambassador have lived in our past, this concept pays tribute. Using current technology like driver assist and display to communicate which would help users commute in our extream unpredictable environment. the interior favours personal space, which would help users organise their time on the commute.
